He'll step down after his recess appointment is through.
I think I speak for everyone when I say, "Awww, crap."
He'll be out within weeks, and Lord knows a Dem-controlled Senate will not give us anyone who will serve America's interests as aggressively.
Part of Bush's statement:
"It is with deep regret that I accept John Bolton's decision to end his service in the administration as permanent representative of the United States to the United Nations when his commission expires," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.
"I am deeply disappointed that a handful of United States Senators prevented Ambassador Bolton from receiving the up or down vote he deserved in the Senate," Bush added. "They chose to obstruct his confirmation, even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time. This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their nation."
He's right. Bolton was a man of guts and talent, and he spoke up for America in one of the least receptive environments on earth. And, as testament to his skill, his efforts were not fruitless, despite the U.N. being equally unreceptive to common sense as it is to a robust defense of American interests:
"Ambassador Bolton led the successful negotiations that resulted in unanimous Security Council resolutions regarding North Korea's military and nuclear activities. He built consensus among our allies on the need for Iran to suspend the enrichment and reprocessing of uranium," Bush added. "His efforts to promote the cause of peace in Darfur resulted in a peacekeeping commitment by the United Nations. He made the case for United Nations reform because he cares about the institution, and wants it to become more credible and effective."
I wonder which squish will be acceptable to the Dem majority. I hear Lincoln Chafee's looking for a job. Ack.
Update: Jay Stephenson is rounding up reactions.

I'd only say that if the U.N. was leaving America; it's a corrupt club of thugs and kleptocrats. Bolton was one of the best U.N. ambassadors that we've ever had, and he gave far more dignity and gravitas to that unworthy institution than it ever deserved. If Krusty the Clown wasn't a cartoon character, I'd recommend him as our next ambassador. As it is, I'd say Michael "Two Fingers Up" Vick or Roseanne "Crotch Grab" Barr would probably be acceptable substitutes. The U.N. is a bad joke and utterly worthless. |

Bolton was exactly the kind of no BS guy we needed in the UN. The Democrats have demonstrated in no uncertain terms that party is more important than country. (As if we didn't already know that about them.) |
"This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their nation." This is a major point in politics, but it seems a little one-sided. |

thanks for the link its pretty good ,they even have yard signs ha ha. |
i should have said dems and rinos stood against bolten being confirmed. |
If they cannot even stand against the Democrats, how can you expect this administration to win a fight against religious terrorists?
Republican Party needs an overhaul. |
Yes the Democrats were Against him. However, Bush and the Republicans are the spineless, cowards. Bush had other options open to appoint him to the UN but failed to use them. Chaffee, if I misspelled his name, Just refer to him as the Maggot would have blocked him from coming to the floor.
Frist, and the Republican leadership was put on notice last month by the mag er Chaffee after he had lost the election that he would block Bolton. He even stated that he more than likely would become a Democrat. So the question is, why didn't Frist and the other gutless Repulicans remove Chaffee from that committee and replace him with a person who would vote for Bolton.
If this was an aberration with Bush, Repubs et al I might be able to tolerate it, however, this inability to stand up for whats right and tell the democrates to take a hike is a trend or pattern that has been practiced over the past 6 years. I don't believe that we have much to look foward to in the next, I was going to say 2 years, but I think the republican party is on life support for a long time to come

i dont know but if you find out where post it ,because i want one too. |
Does anyone know where I can order a "U.S. out of the U.N." bumper sticker? |
well i guess he didnt want to go through the grinder again with dems putting him down and all the arguing about him as ambassador, they were already saying they would not confirm him and the only reason is that bush appointed him,now these lame dems will put in some commie loving un suck azz, and we will lose our second amendment rights to the one world order clan that wants citizens disarmed.bolten was a no nonsense fighter for the usa. lord only knows what we will get now with dems in power. |

"How long do we have to endure the talentless dummies on the left?"
As long as good people of United States keep electing them... |
Bush should either not nominate anybody to succeeed Bolton, or nominate someone like Rumsfeld guaranteed to make the Lefties have kittens.
Not what he would probably do, but it's what he should do. |
What a pathetic White House and Republican Congress.
If they cannot even push to win the nomination of this guy (John Bolton), HOW DO you expect this Administration can win the battle againts evil terrorists?
What a bunch of losers.
Bush and Republican Congress are becoming more annoying to me.
In 2004, I spent almost all my energy to support those guys only to see those incapable persons to get this dismal performance.
Bring Newt Gingrich and Romney!

Bolton is the best Ambassador to the U.N. we've ever had---and that is precisely why the anti-American lefties loathe him. |
How is blocking a vote part of the democratic process? |
I saw the writing on the wall, like probably everyone else out there, but it still is a kick in the guts. I am going to start working on drafting him to run against my worthless Congressman, Brad Miller. |
Perhaps on his final day, Bolton will emerge from a burning UN building with a blood-stained 'stache.
Problem solved. |
Bolton's probably very sick of politics at this point, but I wish he'd run for President. I only know his foreign and security policy, but that's about 90% of any President's job in the 21st century. I'd be surprised if the rest was not acceptable.
