Reid's Sunday Vote
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 4:50 PM
Majority Leader Harry Reid was successful in corralling enough votes to advance his $10 billion land grab, despite 17 Republicans who protested the bill by skipping the vote altogether.

Basically, by using "federal wilderness" laws and other environental designations, the Democratic Congress is locking-up energy-rich domestic lands. Instead of putting a new energy ban in place, they are just going to let the federal government absorb them so they'll never be developed.

66 senators supported the bill over 12 who voted "nay" on it. Not a single Democratic senator voted against it.

Here is the link to the roll call vote.

Yesterday, I wondered how Republican, and usually conservative, Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming would vote on the bill. He supported a provision to prohibit energy exploration in state. He DID  vote for the bill. So did Barrasso's fellow Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi.

Other Republicans who crossed party lines with Barrasso and Enzi to help Reid pass the omnibus were:
Bob Bennett
Thad Cochran
Susan Collins
Mike Crapo
Orrin Hatch
Richard Lugar
Lisa Murkowski
Jim Risch
Olympia Snowe
Roger Wicker

Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged his colleagues oppose the bill, protesting the way Reid rushed the bill through. His Communications Director Don Stewart told Townhall, "Sen. McConnell is disappointed this parks bill restricts development of energy resources at a time when we should be doing much more to become energy independent. And less than a week after the CBO announced a staggering $1.2 trillion federal deficit, he questions the merits of rushing a bill that commits to spending billions more of taxpayer dollars."

The bill will now be sent over to the House where it could be significantly amended by House Republicans although they'll be forced to be very creative. Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently passed a new rules package that took powerful tools away from the minority when it comes to amending legislation.

Stolen land to stop energy for USA
This swap is a criminal effort to stop any gas, oil, coal, coalshale , nuclear facilities and drilling to go on to make the USA energy independent. That the public just cannot see this is a horror. And the Pubs that voted for this were not only shortsighted but stupid. Gas prices are creeping up and some experts think that those will be at $3-$4 bucks a gal very very soon. Americans will whine but smart liberal Dems will blame Bush. Wait and see.

So, what you are saying is that we will never have $4 a gallon gas again. Want to bet?

Lone
This land grab reduces income from the federal treasury, reduces employment in the energy industry, reduces employment in the timber industry. Oil demand has reduced by only 3% worldwide in the past few months but what has happened to the price? You and the other said that oil exploration would only produce 3% more oil on the world market. I believe it would be significantly more. However, you and the other liberals will scream when gas reaches $4 or more a gallon soon as more and more of America's oil and gas reserves are placed off limits.
sdf writes: Monday, January, 12, 2009 3:12 PM
Oh boy
"When the gas prices was over $4.00 a gallon and we the people were begging the house and senate to drill here drill now drill anywhere, and the democrats wouldn’t come back from vacation, this is truly treason."

Ever heard of the Enron loophole? Look at the correlation between its abolishment in June 08' and the fall of gas prices. We can discuss how stupid you sounded screaming "drill here, drill now" during that time while liberals were busy actually fixing the problem. Thank you Senator Levin! You don't even know who's really helping you, and its a bit embarrassing.

RINOs
So why shouldn't they vote with the Dems? They have nothing to lose. The GOP and party apparatus will not allow an unknown to run against them in a primary (or the apparatus will not support a primary challenger) so their seats are safe as long as they vote in a bipartisan manner to assuage the dems and independents in their districts. They will get favorable publicity in the MSM. They will bring home some pork to buy more votes in their districts. And by the time the next election comes around they know nobody will remember this vote. We, the Conservative Americans, have been after these RINOs for years and they continue to be re-elected.

Plenty of reserves
You do not understand when the economy turns and the cost of oil and natural gas goes back up Venezuela, Russia, and Iran etc., will have plenty of reserves to sell us at the top market price. One way the U.S. can help expedite high prices is cut back or better yet completely stop all oil and gas domestic production. If you are for change we can really believe in, think of the possibilities, with any luck Putin can help out the U.S. by applying needed discipline to us like they had to do in the Ukraine and Europe. Russia can keep the U.S. on the straight and narrow on offensive foreign policy decisions, by controlling and cutting of the oil off. That’s why we are in the great shape we are in now, a Congress that can see 20 moves down the road.

In Alaska 42 million acres have been grabbed and National Parks established. Not one road has been built, not one lodge constructed, no services of any type, just land being taken away from developers to make it available for bears, caribou, moose, etc, but to see these creatures you must be old enough or young enough to back pack hundreds of miles among North America's most vicious carnivores. It is useless to try to return Republicans to majority status with these people still in office, like their RINO namesake, they would still succumb to the Democrat agenda.

The following list of names must become the target of a 24/7 barrage of emails, phone calls, complaints, negative opeds and public humiliation for their despicable vote on such a critical bill that will have the effect of both holding us hostage to foreign oil and $4.00/gal gas.

In terms of their ability to be re-elected to public offic, they need to understand that their vote has made them an endangered species.

I realize that Barrasso and Enzi were voting to compensate ranchers for livestock killed by the introduced wolves, but they surely are not so dumb as to believe voting for it in a bill like this is totally different than actually appropriating the money. Besides it should have been part of an ESA reform bill that mandated no impacts from any of the BS takings without compensation from either the environmental groups making the demands or the government.
As for Barrasso's "protecting" the Snake River and Wyoming Range, he may well be sentencing our kids/grandkids to be under the rule of other countries to have any fuel at all.

foxmustang writes: Sunday, January, 11, 2009 7:57 PM
When the GOP
was voted into the majority in Congress in 1994, one of the first things they did was come up with a new plan to drill more places and more often for oil. The OPEC Cartel, sensing long-term profits would suffer, decided to lower the price of crude oil so low as to make it undermine our efforts to drill for new supplies. President Slick Willie Clinton fell for this tactic and used this as an excuse to block any new domestic drilling. "It will take too long for us to realize the new oil, prices are low right now, etc., so we'll not do any new domestic drilling...yada..yada..yada." Yep..the fool fell for the OPEC manipulation of our gov't.
Fast forward to Spring 2008. Fuel prices go through the roof (remember $4.50+ a gallon???) Guess what???...that domestic drilling Clinton "passed on" in 1995 would have long been on line by now. 7/14/2008 President Bush rescinded the Executive ban on domestic drilling. On 7/15 crude oil prices nosed over. Reid and Pelosi, knowing that the Congressional ban on drilling was due to expire on 8/31/2008, told those Dems that were up for re-election to support the expiration of the ban. Those 2 weasels all the while were telling all the Dems that they would reinstate the ban, and those under re-election would not be punished by their constituents on their votes. This "secret" leaked out and Reid/Pelosi had to abandon their devious plan. Now they have pulled it off in a "sneaky" kind of way, and when OPEC screws us yet again, (and they will), make sure you remember which party brought this misery unto you!!(the Dems). Also remember which party rolled over and played dead to this tactic!!(the GOP). ONCE AGAIN.....the rhetoric will be "it'll take too long to come on line, oil is really cheap right now, yada..yada..yada." How shortsighted and stupid our Congress is. VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS WHO SUPPORTED THIS SHAM OUT OF OFFICE IN 2010, 2012, & 2014.....
