Fists Counter Free Speech at Columbia University
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:25 AM

If you see free speech at Columbia University, walk up behind him, tap him on the shoulder, and sucker-punch him. That'll show the arrogant cuss who's boss.

This video below is of Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist, an invited guest at Columbia, trying to give a speech on immigration. Just watch it.

T-t-t-t-talkin' 'bout my generation. A whole lot of them s-s-s-s-suck.

The little punks who stormed the stage two minutes into Gilchrist's speech are, of course, claiming that the Minutemen were the ones causing the problem. You know, 'cause we were just up here peacefully speaking truth to power and celebrating free speech by squelching opposing viewpoints with amateurish signage and rehashed 60s protest chants that don't rhyme, man.

The New York Post identifies the kids with the banner as the Columbia Chicano Caucus, but the Columbia campus newspaper has a different ID (emphasis mine):

Two students in the International Socialist Organization unfurled a yellow banner reading, "No one is illegal!" which prompted other protestors to rush the stage. Gilchrist supporters then clamored on stage while the speakers were ushered out of the auditorium.

I wish this collusion were surprising. But it's not.

Wanna see more of what that all that sweet, steep Ivy League tuition is paying for?

A misguided belief that free speech is only for "legitimate leftist" parts of the debate? Check.

"I don't feel like we need to apologize or anything. It was fundamentally a part of free speech. ... The Minutemen are not a legitimate part of the debate on immigration."

A racist requirement that minorities adhere to leftist ideology just because they're brown-skinned? Check.

Audience members shouted interjections throughout his address, calling Stewart, who is black, a hypocrite for supporting the Minutemen. Stewart responded by becoming louder and telling the audience that they did not know anything about government.

Whitewashing of the caucus and protestors with a warm, fuzzy quote? Check.

"I wish that it was larger and I wish we could have a larger impact right away," Xiomara Maldonado, BC '08 and member of the Barnard group Mujeres, said of the protest. "Clearly, it [the protestors] is a very diverse group. It's not just Latinos, it's not just people of color."

Yeah, maybe you guys could have had enough impact to keep opposing view completely off campus in the first place. That woulda been awesome.

But surely, there's at least an editorial or column condemning this behavior in the campus paper. I'm afraid to click. Maybe? Maybe?

No such luck. The Middle East, vaccinations, and Queer and Latino Awareness Month.

To be fair, the editorial page could have been put to bed by the time of the speech, so I'll give 'em 'til tomorrow.

I'm so proud right now to have gone to the University of Georgia. We have our rednecks and our commies, like any other university, but all of them are much more polite than these Ivy League kids. The worst we saw was vaguely racist signs questioning Clarence Thomas' intelligence when he spoke at law school graduation. Rude, but not the thuggish reaction of these spoiled brats.

We know where barbaric behavior belongs-- tailgates on Saturdays.

Update: How weird is this? I searched for a Georgia tailgate video on YouTube, randomly picked one, and I knew a guy in the video. Georgia has 35,000 students, and this video was done a year after I graduated and several years after he graduated. What are the chances, huh? The Internet is strange.

Blecccchhh....
"Here here to the Red and Black"

I just threw up in my mouth a little...
Actually, I'd take that group in a minute over what I am seeing from the Ivy League these days.

Columbia Spectator
I went to the Columbia Spectator web-site they are running a pol about the protest. I think there is cause for hope; 52% of the respondents said that not only did they disagree with the protestors but they believe they crossed the line by storming the stage.

What can we expect?
Those thugs did their heros Fidel and Che proud. It's what grows from lefty lib Democrat dogma. It's what we can expect from them if they take over.

Where were the cops?
I heard both Jim Gilchrist and Marvin Stewart on Fox News Shows state that the cops DID NOTHING!!!
Security ABANDONED them. The Lefty President of Columbia University would not respond to requests for comment on the incident from Fox News. Is not free speech a civil right? The civil rights of these men were violated. Where's the ACLU this time, huh???

Randy Graf needs YOUR support!
Call 520-887-2984!! And call it now!
The #1 issue for Republican Randy Graf is stopping illegal immigration, defending our borders and protecting US national sovereignty. Randy is also a rock solid conservative on both economic and social issues and he is pro gun rights. Randy Graf needs your help! Randy Graf is just like Tom Tancredo and we need a lot more Tom Tancredos in Congress.
The number one race for conservatives in the USA is the Randy Graf campaign for Congress in Arizona, district #8. Nationwide grassroots conservatives can help Randy win by 1) sending money and 2) making GOTV phone calls from YOUR HOME to key precincts in AZ # 08. Please call the Graf HQ at 520-887-2984 and offer to volunteer no matter where you live in the USA. They will email phone lists to call the last 3 days of the election.
Also, go to his web page to sign up for email alerts and give whatever money you can: http://www.votegraf.com.
Additionally, you can call me Robert Morrow at 512-306-1510. I live in Austin, TX and I am urging ALL of my friends to help Randy Graf, especially with making phone calls during the last 72 hours of the campaign.

Sincerely,

Robert Morrow 512-306-1510

Possible Worse Results
There isn't any doubt that this sort of behavior will continue whenever speakers who are not leftist show up at colleges and universities. What is doubtful is whether any of the colleges and universities (or even law enforcement agencies) will do anything effective to punish this sort of violence against anti-leftist speakers.

If, as I fear, the authorities do nothing what would be a likely result from the rightists or some of them forming their own groups of thugs to protect their speakers? How long after the formation of such "party militia" would it take for them to be used against leftist speakers? How much longer after that to be used in attempts to intimidate voters, break up marches for this or that (either side), vandalize businesses of those who oppose (fill in your favorite cause)? Any of that sound familiar? Anyone recall - most recently - the course of politics in the Weimar Republic?

College and university authorities as well as local law enforcement and judicial authorities ought to - most urgently! - respond to this sort of thuggery by any political group swiftly and according to law. A failure to do so will encourage the formation of "rightist" militia, which will in turn impell the wearing of uniforms and ax handles by the "leftist" militia ... and away we go, down the sewer drain.
