Fists Counter Free Speech at Columbia University
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:25 AM

If you see free speech at Columbia University, walk up behind him, tap him on the shoulder, and sucker-punch him. That'll show the arrogant cuss who's boss.

This video below is of Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist, an invited guest at Columbia, trying to give a speech on immigration. Just watch it.

T-t-t-t-talkin' 'bout my generation. A whole lot of them s-s-s-s-suck.

The little punks who stormed the stage two minutes into Gilchrist's speech are, of course, claiming that the Minutemen were the ones causing the problem. You know, 'cause we were just up here peacefully speaking truth to power and celebrating free speech by squelching opposing viewpoints with amateurish signage and rehashed 60s protest chants that don't rhyme, man.

The New York Post identifies the kids with the banner as the Columbia Chicano Caucus, but the Columbia campus newspaper has a different ID (emphasis mine):

Two students in the International Socialist Organization unfurled a yellow banner reading, "No one is illegal!" which prompted other protestors to rush the stage. Gilchrist supporters then clamored on stage while the speakers were ushered out of the auditorium.

I wish this collusion were surprising. But it's not.

Wanna see more of what that all that sweet, steep Ivy League tuition is paying for?

A misguided belief that free speech is only for "legitimate leftist" parts of the debate? Check.

"I don't feel like we need to apologize or anything. It was fundamentally a part of free speech. ... The Minutemen are not a legitimate part of the debate on immigration."

A racist requirement that minorities adhere to leftist ideology just because they're brown-skinned? Check.

Audience members shouted interjections throughout his address, calling Stewart, who is black, a hypocrite for supporting the Minutemen. Stewart responded by becoming louder and telling the audience that they did not know anything about government.

Whitewashing of the caucus and protestors with a warm, fuzzy quote? Check.

"I wish that it was larger and I wish we could have a larger impact right away," Xiomara Maldonado, BC '08 and member of the Barnard group Mujeres, said of the protest. "Clearly, it [the protestors] is a very diverse group. It's not just Latinos, it's not just people of color."

Yeah, maybe you guys could have had enough impact to keep opposing view completely off campus in the first place. That woulda been awesome.

But surely, there's at least an editorial or column condemning this behavior in the campus paper. I'm afraid to click. Maybe? Maybe?

No such luck. The Middle East, vaccinations, and Queer and Latino Awareness Month.

To be fair, the editorial page could have been put to bed by the time of the speech, so I'll give 'em 'til tomorrow.

I'm so proud right now to have gone to the University of Georgia. We have our rednecks and our commies, like any other university, but all of them are much more polite than these Ivy League kids. The worst we saw was vaguely racist signs questioning Clarence Thomas' intelligence when he spoke at law school graduation. Rude, but not the thuggish reaction of these spoiled brats.

We know where barbaric behavior belongs-- tailgates on Saturdays.

Update: How weird is this? I searched for a Georgia tailgate video on YouTube, randomly picked one, and I knew a guy in the video. Georgia has 35,000 students, and this video was done a year after I graduated and several years after he graduated. What are the chances, huh? The Internet is strange.
