Palin vs. the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:20 AM

Last week, Kathleen Parker wrote that Sarah Palin is "out of her league".  Today, Fareed Zakaria suggests someone "put Sarah Palin out of her misery."

Zakaria's comments are to be expected (after all, he writes for Newsweek), but Parker's comments appear to be more an example of opportunism run amok (her gambit paid off -- she's being talked about).  Either way, it is problematic that it has become popular for prognosticators -- even so-called conservatives who once sang her praises (it's amazing how fickle some of these folks are) -- to bash Palin.

It's tempting to turn down publicity.  Last week, a well-known political reporter asked me "how I feel about Palin."  My response was one word: "love".  His follow-up was a question over whether or not the Katie Couric interview changed my view of her.  When I said it hadn't, the emails ended.  My guess is that if I had bashed her -- the way Parker did -- I would have gotten some publicity out of it.  But the truth, though, is that it is premature to write-off the Palin pick.

Aside from the obvious caveat that Thursday's debate will tell us a lot more, following are a few thoughts on just why that is the case:

1.  The McCain campaign -- not Palin, herself -- is probably, at least, partially to blame for the way her rollout has gone.  In this regard, I agree with the calls to, "let Palin be Palin."

2.  It's still early, and pundits like Parker may spend the next eight (or sixteen) years eating humble pie.  Remember, Ronald Reagan was initially written-off as a light-weight actor who wasn't prepared to discuss serious issues like foreign polic (actually, he was written-off when he first ran for governor, first ran for president, and then again after his first debate performance in 1984).

While it's always dangerous to compare anyone to the Great Communicator, the fact is that the same insiders and media elite wrote him off.  The reason, of course, is that these folks are looking for a fast-talking policy wonk candidate (like, say, Newt Gingrich).  But what the media admires is not necessarily what real Americans reward.  And my guess is that the bitter opposition to Palin has something to do with the fact that her enemies see her amazing potential.

A good rule in politics is that if they are attacking you it's because what you are doing is working!  Based on crowd sizes, Palin is still demonstrably popular with average Americans (you know, the people who elect presidents).  So long as she has the support of average Americans, the talking heads don't matter.

3.  The criticism of Palin has been very "general", meaning people have generally criticized her for not being specific enough, etc.  However, you cannot really say she has made any major gaffes (depending how you feel about the "Bush doctrine" story).  In my estimation, it is impressive for a candidate to do three extended national interviews and not really say one thing that could be used against her running mate (granted, the media probably resents this fact) ...

4.  Lastly, Palin's interviews have occurred at a time when the major focus has been on other issues, including the economy.  If there was ever a time to have an off day, she picked it.  A decent performance on Thursday night will render her opening interviews as about as significant a predictor as the Redskins opening game against the Giants.  In a business where it's "what have you done for me lately," too many analysts are putting too much stock in what may be seen as act 2 of a very, very long performance ...

... We will know more on Thursday night.  But I would caution everyone to pay more attention to how average Americans respond to Sarah Palin -- and less attention to how pundits and critics rate her performance.

Palin
Palin has been a home run for McCain. In the era of 24/7 media, people love to pounce on everything. The liberals have tried and tried and tried to knock Palin down and have failed miserably do far. They have called her Dan Quayle, said she is unprepared only to see her knock the ball out of the park during her acceptance speech.

It does not really matter what anyone’s predictions are for the debate this Thursday, the day will be here before we know it, however I would expect Palin to outperform as she has in everything else so far.

Public Perception.
I think there is an under-rated love Sarah Palin among millions that will be evidenced on election day. I would also say however that she does need to be freed up a bit. She needs to do more interviews and get more into the thick of things. The American people are "screaming" for someone genuine. Sarah is the real deal.

More LA LA LA I can't hear you
From republicans about Sarah Palin. Just google Palin. She's a laughing stock right now for good reason. Sure she can't put 2 words together and form a coherent thought, but her record is bubbling to the surface and it's filled with questionable judgment red flags. Hubby in on meetings and copied on emails, obstructing the abuse of power investigation and trying to transfer it over to a body she has the power to fire, pork, $25,000 in gifts after only 20 minths in office, hiring friends, firing based on personal not professional reasons, using her position as mayor to pressure the city council to change zoning regulation so that she could sell her house, etc.

She has some successes as gov. But she has just as many problems that the rest of the country is talking about.

The story is Palin, not McCain, and not the issues. That's why he's dropping in the polls. Where is she on the bailout? Oh yeah, she said it's about health care reform. No wonder McCain has her under lock and key.

It is so funny that (as Ann Coulter says) when a Dem/Liberal is losing anything (especially an argument) - they resort to name calling. Who in the world do you think you are to call her a bimbo?? It is a shame that people base their opinions on what they read in the paper.

Then do what Parker did she is very very famous just for now, or hang around MSNBC, as Peggy Noonan does, then say something to their audiance, and write completely different in the Opinion Journal.

Sara Palin will do quite will with the masses, she has been the governer of the Alaska for over 2years, comparing to Obama being a community agitator in Chicago.
She has more executive experience than anyone named 2cents, She commands the Alaska National Guards, Runs the State that is home to anti-missile, missile and air defense bases facing the Far East.

When Sarah Palin was announced, the enthusiasm was unbridled. Can you imagine what it will be about 5 days before the election when something strongly positive hits the air waves about her? It's still over 30 til election day. Let the critics stew for a while, a strong hit for Sarah just before the 4th is what will carry over to the polls.

Personally, I'm waiting til about 2 days before the election to hear McCain say "Sarah's talked me into drilling in ANWR". Game, set, match.

Just this statement alone in your article was most intriguing to me.

A good rule in politics is that if they are attacking you it's because what you are doing is working!

So, if this statement you have made is correct, then we must believe that Bush’s leading this country into the Iraq fiasco, is working? That over 80 percent of “average Americans”, as you aptly described them are wrong in apposing Bush’s war and that you along with about 20 percent of the rest of Americans are right? That makes the 80 percent of us just “talking heads” that don’t matter by your statement.

Biden and American History
Somehow I think that Sarah will overcome her lack in ability at the present time in dealing with such questions from the media. Specific questions about John Mc Cain ought to be referred to John Mc Cain not his running mate. But look at who was asking the questions: a liberal left who despises everything about God. The Campaign should have never allowed that interview to take place. Ok now for Joe Biden-
Im sure he'll come out and say something like I had a headache or a slight relapse from a past anerysm. Nevertheless, I was quite surprised to hear of his comments pertaining to Roosevelt and the Great Depression. I mean I can't honestly say that the average American would have known the answer either, but a politician of his caliber should know the VP's every since Washington not to mention who the President was during that time. So do we really want someone like Biden and this young man who is still in political diapers ( causing Congress to change alot of them during the course of the next 4 years provided Obama wins), running the country.
I DON'T I'd rather have John Mc Cain and Sarah Palin. By the way, in answer to alot of questions about whether or not Palin is ready to be President. lol come on folks, have you seen McCains mother? She's 92 or 94 somewhere up there and STILL VERY MUCH in tact of her faculties. I BELIEVE THAT JOHN WILL BE AROUND A LONG TIME. It's in the genes.

Palin a Fighter...
There are two things to note: 1) So Palin didn't do wonderfully in interviews outside her areas of strength conducted by people openly hostile to her existence and eager to define her, if not destroy her. Duh. The important factor was that she went in to that hostile turf and let them fire away. Obama acts as if a tough question is affront to all that's Holy. (Not that he'd ever get asked a tough question, with follow ups by Couric or Gibson.) Palin will learn facts. She's got what you can't teach.

2) Instinctively, we seem to recognize that the problem isn't that we're seeing Palin as she is. It's that she hasn't been free to be who she is. Let Palin be Palin, lots of us seem to be saying. Let her loose. From what I see McCain has also recognized this finally and she'll be free to rock and roll. And here's the reality. The more America knows and see Palin as she really is, the better she looks. The more American knows and sees the real Obama the worse he looks. (Democrats know this. Why do you think Hillary cleaned his clock the longer the race went on?)

Palin has risen to the challenge and excelled at all she's tried. And she's obviously competitive and fearless. It's foolish to bet against people like that. If Biden thinks for a second he's debating the Tina Fey version of Sarah Palin he's going to get destroyed. I don't mean beaten in snap polls conducted after the debate after a fair exchange of positions and ideas. I mean UFC beat down, blood streaming from his face, desperately tapping out. Cassius Clay versus Sonny Liston.
She will make her rookie mistakes. But as even Bill Clinton points out, the woman's got game. (Or did he say "gams"?)

Katie Couric asks the questions that arguably could be considered "gotcha". Maybe Sarah should know every esoteric benchmark in John McCain's legislative history, but leaning forward and pointedly insisting she answer the question while Obama & Biden are given passes at every turn. No one has asked those two any tough questions, can anyone doubt there's left wing bias in the MSM, no doubt. You would think there'd be small pinch of hidden support from Katie for a possible 1st time female winner of the vice-presidency, but blind ideology wins. Someone should sit these network dip-wads down and ask them some questions on civics and see how they fair. Can Katie name any, or even one of McCain's legislative accomplishments, she probably can't and they do exist. McCain and Palin think from a country first perspective, whereas Obama thinks of himself and exposes his hubris and meager accomplishments, "community organizer", can Katie name one of Barack's accomplishments, I can't.

Pig Trough Removal Threatened
The libs are so afraid she's going to try to sell off government furniture on EBAY and then turn around and cut out all their pig food handouts. She will too. Go Sarah.

What a Team
PC writes, "The story is Palin, not McCain, and not the issues. That's why he's dropping in the polls."

Certainly it's partly Palin making a fool of herself, but McCain isn't helping himself either---for example, coming across as a grumpy grandpa in last week's debate and making a grand gesture of "riding to the rescue" on the financial bailout that not only didn't accomplish anything, it may have made matters worse.

What a team. An erratic 72-year-old president with bad judgment and a troubling health history backed up by a running mate so far out of her depth she has become a national laughingstock.

Wendy, you sound like
you just learned a new vocabulary word at school, to wit, "laissez-faire."

As for the rest, see pablo st. cruz's comment (September, 29, 2008 5:35 PM).

My Advice
Palin's appeal was her genuineness, not her mastery of talking points, international personalities, and fine wines. She came on the scene at the convention with balls and guts, two things GOP men do not have. Finally, we thought, we've got someone with fight.

This was her appeal and her threat. The she male socialists and their bull dyke allies trembled and the word went out to entertainers to take her down.

McCain and the other GOP eunuchs also didn't know how to capitalize on Sarah's appeal. So they muffled and stiffled her and have tried to turn her into just another Beltway insider. It's not working.

Let her be Sarah! Turn her loose!

Here's a thought. Try this.

Question: Sarah, can you give one example of this or that trivia, or personality, or your foreign experience.

Answer: Katy, (or whoever), I confess I can't do that. You know, I haven't been skulking around Washington like the other politicians who've run this country into the ground and like you, Katy, and the other medica cockroaches, whoring yourselves out for a byline. I've been living and working among the people doing real things. I've proven that I can get things done. And when I'm Vice President, I can hire a bunch of experts like every other goddammn politician who'll find out those things if I need them. But I can make decisions. I know what's right and wrong. I don't need anyone to tell me that and I don't need a bunch of handlers and speech writers to do that for me.

What's your next question, Katy?

Palin/Biden debate
yes, please free Sarah and let her speak. She did so well in the Couric interview - well, okay, those were hard questions I admit. It is sad to see her become a punch line.

How bad does McCain need Romney now?? Rather, how bad does the Republican party need him now?

JD's Handsome Son - a response for you
Didn't we already tried this "who would you rather have a beer with?" crap with W already. You already know how this turned out. Just look at this current economic crisis. This is what happens when you elect cowboys and red necks to run the gov't.

We used to honor education and smarts in this country. Somewhere along the way, this country got dumber through football, NASCAR and beer. Lots of Beer. Now we've got people like you who wants to put their drinking buddies into the highest offices in the land.

What good is it to hire experts if you can't read or write? How good are your judgements if you itching for a fight with a country like Russian who has 24,000 Nukes and ICBM? Maybe you should ask your Grand-daddy about the duck and cover drills of the 1950's. B'ce with Auntie Sarah's finger on the button, your life expectancy is reduce to 30 minutes or less.

Now go home boy and and tell your daddy that you just got a good A$$ kicking at TH - The Wing Nut's favorite hangout.

Interesting conversation
I went to the dentist today and overheard several women talking about Palin.
One young woman proclaimed " I hate Sarah Palin."
I said to her "Oh, you've met her?" She looked at me puzzled and said no.
"How can you hate someone you have never met?", I asked.
"Well they say she had her son for political reasons. I mean, 95% of women abort Down Syndrome babies", she answered.
"So you hate this woman, whom you have never met, because she gave birth to a disabled child", I asked in disbelief as she turned and walked away.

What on this Gods earth have we become? I have read on this site and others the most vile and ludicrous statements regarding this woman. What is her crime? What has she done to deserve such hatred? The depth and breadth of hatred and contempt displayed in the name of politics is destroying our country.

Sarah Palin did not run for this position. She was asked to join the ticket by John Mccain. I guess her crime was saying yes.

Enmity Prevails
Make no mistake about it, we are in a cold civil war of ideology in this country. When it goes hot I'll be glad to be on Palin's side.

Sarah Palin and the Liberals
Liberals/Democrats keep pounding on Palin because they're scared to death by her. I'm glad she's a neophyte nationally. We might get better decisions closer to the people and farther removed from the Congressional cesspit---where Biden as waxed ineleqantly [is that a word?] for 36 years. Talk about an old fogy.

Obama has been running for another office so long, no one really knows what kind of executive he'd be. But we do know he's a socialist. We know he's a complete non-entity when it comes to hard dealing with the World.

If you think our economy is bad now [thank you Acorn, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and lots of Liberal/Democrat cronies], wait until an Obama administration gets it's hands on the wheel. NO! Don't let him or them in the door.

I think Sarah Palin will hold her own Thursday night. She'd really have to collapse and Biden shine with a halo for me to worry.

You are a despicable "unit"...I won't insult the human race by including you. Calling a child a "retard" is another example of an intellectual void shooting off its pie-hole in a hateful rage.

Slimy, vile, disgusting filth. May God have mercy on your soul-less carcass.

Name Calling: The last refuge of the intellectually vacant. You, "sir" just demonstrated exactly why there have been only 2 legitimate democrat presidents since JFK. LBJ doesn't count...nor does Ford. That leaves Carter and Clinton.

Your hateful diatribe against the majority of citizens in this Great Country will surely help to maintain the dismal performance of the democrat party. Congratulations. I suggest you take a trip to a library (it's a building full of books) and read something other than the DailyKos, DU and HuffPo. You might actually learn something...doubtful, but possible.

Have a nice day.

Not Enough Time
I would agree with you if Palin had more time...she doesn't. You made a comparison to Reagan and I think it would be more accurate to compare Reagan's "inexperience" with that of Obama at the start of the primaries. Both were given ample time during the campaigning process to grow and learn.

Palin has been given about a month to learn virtually everything regarding the policy stances of her running mate as well as foreign and domestic affairs. It's not an impossible task but anyone looking upon the situation realistically could easily understand Parker's position.

The more I watch the Couric interview (which was painfully hilarious mind you), the more I feel sorry for Gov. Palin...and I'm voting Democratic in this election. I feel sorry for her because she IS out of her league. Not to say that given the time that she wouldn't be a formidable candidate, she is spunky and charming, but she doesn't have that time. And unfortunately, it's not her inability (or lack of intelligence) that will bring her down. It will be the "3AM Call" so to speak that she received from McCain asking her to run for VP.

Palin's appeal
I'm a Canadian, ineligible to vote (wait...let me call the local ACORN office) and I'm working in a McCain/Palin office with a few other stay at home moms who have never darkened the door of a campaign office. I think that the thousands of SAHMs who are so happy to see someone like Sarah on the political stage are going to be bundling up strollers and pit stopping at the election office on the way to the soccer game to vote for the first time in a long time. These are the same moms who don't have time to listen to all the talking heads and their opinions, they are the moms who have felt looked down upon by society and the more the pundits denigrate Palin, the more they identify with her and the more determined these moms are going to be in getting their vote cast.

Sarah
Sarah Palin will survive all of this. Let the critics (including those who so recently lauded her arrival) have their say today. Tomorrow they will be eating their words! Go Sarah. The only real "outsider" of the cesspool, we call Washington D.C.
