CPAC Coulterized: The Obligatory Coulter Post
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 5:15 PM
Oh, Ann Coulter. I know everyone's said about everything that can be said about this, and Monday isn't even over yet, but such is the power of Ann's rhetoric and the firestorms that follow it, that we are all obliged to respond to it. My first response was short, annoyed, and disgusted. Here's the full-blown take.

In college, I discovered Townhall. It was this wondrous place where I could read all sorts of conservative opinion all in one place, and use the political analysis I found to better arm myself against lefty professors. I'm not just saying that 'cause I work here, either. Really, that's where I read my daily political commentary. Among my most frequent reads were Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin. I read others, too--notably Thomas Sowell and John Stossel, because I dig me some fiscal conservatism-- but Coulter and Malkin had an impact on me. They were young, strong conservative women who were sometimes biting and always successful. I liked the idea of what the future might hold for a young, strong conservative woman, though at the time I didn't think politics was going to be my career path.

Point being, I had a soft spot for Ann. When I left N.C. to move to D.C. a couple years ago, a friend gave me one of those talking Ann Coulter dolls, which I immediately set about hiding in my liberal editor's office, rigged to squawk about liberalism every 10 minutes. Heh. Luckily, he was a good-humored man.

For those reasons, I'm often more inclined to defend Coulter than others in my office, and others inside the Beltway, in general. But it's been a few years now since Coulter's become a caricature of herself, and I'm about done defending. I defended her on the grounds that she's a whip-smart woman who can whip-crack her political opponents like nobody's business. She's still both those things, but the shock jock element has really grown to overshadow the smartness, and it's not the liberal media bias that causes that effect. It's Ann herself.

I also defended her because I think it's very easy for policy wonks and Beltway snobs to forget that there's a large segment of decent, hard-working Americans for whom Coulter is an outlet and an icon. They get angry with liberals; they get frustrated with wimpy Republicans, and they let Ann lash out for them. I understand. There have been times that I've marveled at whatever stinging witticism she's levied and wondered at the fact that I could never do the same.

One of those times was not Friday, when she used the word "faggot" to refer to John Edwards. One of those times was not last year's CPAC when she used the word "ragheads" to refer to Iranians. I think it's important for us, here in our Washington pundit circles, not to forget that there are a bunch of right-leaning regular people out there who like Ann Coulter, and with good reasons. In the past, I've recoiled when confronted with reflexive Coulter snobbery because it's the "right" thing to say in Washington circles. "Oh, Ann Coulter. No, of course I don't like her. She's so gauche."

In the past, I've defended her, even as her rhetoric got worse, as a "gateway conservative"-- an entertaining act that pulled in folks who are ticked off at the modern liberal movement, but not necessarily ideological conservatives. However, once those people start reading her, I argued, they generally migrate to other conservative writers like Thomas Sowell and Charles Krauthammer, which I felt was a net win for conservatism. Many more people have been exposed to the ideas of free-market conservatism because of Coulter than would have been without such a popular figure to bring them in.

But how many have been turned off by the same figure? At some point, the scale tipped, and Ann started doing more harm than good. In two years at CPAC, with just two words, she reinforced two stereotypes of conservatives-- as racists and homophobes-- that certainly don't need reinforcing. I've spent much of my life fighting back against the notion that all conservatives are nasty, racist, homophobic meanies who just want to get rich and screw the poor. I became a fiscal conservative specifically because I wanted to help the low-income area in which I grew up, and it was apparent liberalism was not the way to do it. It's not a stereotype that's easy to dispel in a largely liberal environment, but it's one that needs to be dispelled, and inroads can be made as long as the person driving the car isn't yelling "faggot" and "raghead."

"Faggot" is a nasty word. I learned that from a teacher in first grade, when it suddenly became the in thing for my classmates to call each other, but I'm pretty sure I knew it before that. I knew it was a nasty word on the elementary-school playground. Why would we, as conservatives, not acknowledge that it's a nasty word when used at a mainstream political conference attended by presidential candidates and packed with young conservatives who are ostensibly learning to lead our movement?

If some liberal blogger had caught a random CPAC attendee on camera saying, "John Edwards is a faggot," I would have been embarrassed for our movement. How much worse that it was a featured speaker who said it?

Tough is fine. Even some of Ann's over-the-top jokes can be written off as just that-- jokes. But you can't write off every hateful, politically damaging crack as a-O.K. simply because that Ann's a jokester. I, for one, am proud that there are Middle Easterners, gay men and women, and other minorities for whom conservatism is an ideology that empowers. Don't they get enough crap from our lefty colleagues for "leaving the plantation?" Why should they be subjected to more from one of their supposed allies?

Ours is not the ideology of identity politics and knee-jerk, manufactured outrage that serve political ends, not people. But it is an ideology that should seek to serve everyone, regardless of color or sexual orientation. We're always going to disagree within our ranks about some issues, but if conservatives truly believe that free-market conservatism serves all Americans better than does big-government liberalism, then why scare people out of our big tent? We should be working, as Michael Steele said, "invite everyone to our table, because it's the table of opportunity"-- not by compromising our beliefs, but simply by not compromising our conferences with folks who say "faggot." It's really not much to ask.

As for the Left--no, they will never apologize or denounce similar behavior on their side, and no one will ever notice or give credit to the right for calling out its own. But to take that as a cue to excuse ourselves in acting just like them is ridiculous. I don't wanna be no Kos just because he can get away with it, so why can't I?

And, speaking in a politically pragmatic sense, it just does us no good to have her at CPAC, associated with all of the Republican Party's presidential candidates. Who will come to CPAC to bother with conservatives next year if she is there to cause a liability by proximity to any campaign that sets foot in the door? Don't conservatives want presidential candidates to come to their biggest gathering and address their concerns? The front-runners are all moderate-ish men that need to make some promises. That's a significant amount of political pull lost for a couple punchlines, if you keep Ann in the line-up, isn't it?

Check out the damage Coulter already did to Romney. He praised her before her speech, and she sucker-punched him. Now, anyone on YouTube can splice the two clips back-to-back and make Romney look like a jerk. Insodoing, as Ace points out, Ann handicaps a conservative guy who has the potential to effect more change on a conservative policy level, for all of America, than she'll ever have. Do we really want her doing that every year to our top candidates? We don't want to become the left:

It's a tenet of the fightin' fightin' nutroots that you spray your invective around indiscriminately, without thought to its effectiveness or blowback, because it's the fightin' fightiness of the fight that really matters, not actual results. Or prudence. Or simple decency.

I reject that. Most conservatives do, at least when they see such infantile tactics used by the left. But when it's Ann, well, many conservatives find themselves defending the fightin' fighty fightiness of the nutroots.

We're better than that, and Ann used to be better than that.

Right now, she's just making our battle more uphill, and we don't need that. She's also made it necessary for every conservative blogger to spend the past couple of days writing about a rude gay slur when they could have been writing about some of the actual ideas expressed at CPAC.

Not cool, Ann.

Anyway, who wants a doll that says "faggot?"

thanks MCH
Thanks for writing this post. Being a Democrat, I know you're not really writing for me, but I'd like you to know that I find it refreshing to read a well thought out and constructive piece about Coulter's appearance at CPAC. Too often in the last two days I have read really hurtful and hateful comments or postings that are extraordinarily discouraging. I grew up in a very Republican and conservative family. As can be expected, we disagree on many things but we always show respect for those opinions. In other words, we don't hate each other. On Townhall, however, I see incredible animosity towards anyone that doesn't think like them or isn't like them and it is really sad to think that this is the state of discourse in this country. Being gay myself and reading some of the comments makes this even sadder. It's nice to see here that some conservatives don't feel the same way as many of the people commenting. I applaud you for a good column and it is refreshing to see so many people agree with you.

In regard to those on the left that refuse to acknowledge our own shrill and hateful commentators, pundits, and bloggers...get real. You know they are there. You may agree with their general political views, but you don't have to support hate mongering on either side of the aisle.

Republicans need to grow up
Bravo for your stand, MK! Bravo also for participating in the comment thread. Maybe you could influence your TownHall fellow contributors to do likewise.

Throw Ann under the bus?? Ann throws herself under the bus at every opportunity. She's like that guy in the internet video going around. Whenever she sees an open mike she dives for the gutter.

From all the posts I've read supporting Coulter I've come to the conclusion that you're all part of a cult of personality. It has nothing to do with politics, its about Ann worship. You guys couldn't care less if we lose the presidency in addition to Congress, as long as you get your daily fix of rage and vitriol from the object of your worship. You're Ann-droids.

Need explanation - Icedog
"Many people oppose homosexuality for many reasons besides religion. If your assumption were correct than all atheists would support the homosexual agenda...not true."

Why then do they oppose it? it that based on the b aseless theory that sll homosexuals are pedophiles? Just curious.

"you can't name any tall blondes with size 7 shoes with the initials AC" See, I win again."

Size 7???!!! LOL Try size 12. She ain't no size 7.

And as for her claim of being Christian - I don't think so and I doubt anyone posting here is foolish enough to buy that load of garbage. It has already been proven through the pastor of Redeemer Church that she claims to attend that she in fact is not a member.

She claims this for obvious reasons, so the Evangelicals will embrace her. It's just not true.

Way to toss a sister under the bus, Ham.

Here's hoping you've got lots and lots of markers on all your friends, because when you need them, those markers are the only things that are going to bind your friends to you.

It won't be your behavior when the self-righteous liberals and the sanctimonious girly-boys (I mean you, Dean, yes you) smell blood in the water.

Loyalty by MKH. That and $159 will get you a glass of iced tea at Lubys.

Amanda Marcotte has a best seller now? Is she on every left wing talk show now?

While somewhat similar, she is hardly an analogue for Ann Coulter or Michael Savage.

Defend Ann Coulter?
Sorry, but anyone who pays serious attention to Ann Coulter has some major problems. Either she is an arrogant, malicious, crude woman without the slightest compassion or concern for truth, or she likes attention and making money so much that she's always thinking up new ways of getting both.

Frankly, I worry more about people who continue to admire and defend Ann Coulter. As we used to say to one another as kids: "You need to have your head examined." Not only their heads. Their hearts, too. For someone who worries about the 'Godless' Ann and her smear. snear, slander mentality goes against the basic ethics of all major faiths. I hope she doesn't seriously claim to be a Christian!

Twist it around
MKH,

You are really twisting this around, or maybe you never watched the clip of Ann. She didn't, as you suggest, shout slurs uncontested at a large gathering. She made a very clever joke that tied a current event showing the lunacy of the left and Hollywood (Isaiah Washington checks himself into rehab because he used the word faggot once) into a dig on a current liberal Presidential candidate.

Maybe next time Ann should have her speeches closed captioned for the humor impaired.
Jeff H writes: Tuesday, March, 06, 2007 4:59 PM
Could someone please explain to me...
...how using the word "faggot" makes one a "homophobe"? In actual usage (out here in Jesus Land, outside the Beltway), "faggot" is the functional equivalent of "q-u-e-e-r", which homosexuals themselves use. Are homosexuals also secretly "homophobic"? And when did disliking someone or something, even if intensely (to the point of hatred) become the equivalent of "fearing" said person or thing? That someone hates homosexuals, even if they call them "faggots", does not in any meaningful sense translate into "fearing" homosexuals.

Drop the linguistic snobbery and focus your energies on bashing liberals, their misguided policies and provably false assumptions, and leave Ann alone. Sheesh...

[FOOTNOTE: I find it amusing that your language editor won't allow the word "q-u-e-e-r" in comments]

Coulter
I believe Coulter to be shape and witty enough to make a pin cushion out of most who would argue against her. So saying I don't believe her words CPAC were necessary. Hurtful to conservatives? Since when will a liberal or the MSM people look at a conservative as anything other than a racist homophobe? I think we worry much over issues that matter little and not enough about the issues that matter much!

I admire your willingness to join in the fray of these debates... as I also enjoy Burt P. doing likewise from time to time.

Makes you columnists/bloggers "real".

I took a vow a few days ago that I would no longer engage in a "debate" with Kimberly, who I affectionately dubbed "Tehran Kim" a few weeks back.

It reminds me too much of the types of debates I had with my daughter when she was about 12 years of age.

Oh, please. If the ability to shout slurs uncontested at large gatherings of fellow conservatives is "what we're fighting for" or what constitutes a "strong, conservative woman," then yeah, count me out.

Ann's not a victim. She's more than capable of handling herself, and I am more than welcome to think her comment stupid.

Ann ROCKS! This was a very funny joke. That's what Ann intended it to be. If it's not your type of humor, then don't laugh at it.

MKH, if you fashion yourself as a strong, conservative young woman, then be a strong, conservative young woman. But you're acting more like a pundit whose main job is to be the PC Humor police.

Edwards sure wasn't offended by it. He just used it as another shameless opportunity to try to scam money from liberal fools. If they are dumb enough to give John Edwards "Coulter Cash" then they deserve to be the butt of this joke.

re: MKH and Coulter
Thank you, Mary Katherine, for speaking out against Ann Coulter. Yes, Coulter is smart, and she can be funny. But her latest - referring to Edwards as a "faggot" is irreprehensible.
It doesn't matter if Coulter is not anti-gay; we live in a sound-bite world, and people are not going to read her entire speech. She called a Presidential candidate a "faggot", and that is all that matters here.
How are we Republicans going to to recruit more minority people if Coulter is out there making us look racist ("ragheads") and homophobic ("faggot")?
I've worked with adolescents, and while "faggot" might be seen as "a school yard taunt" (Coulter), if people would delve more deeply I think they will find that many kids use it to mean "you're stupid/bad/ugly like a homosexual".
Coulter is hurting us conservatives, not helping, and I want her alienated to the outskirts of the conservative movement until she realizes that she is out there giving us a bad name.
And please, folks - Don't bring up the argument that the left spews more meanness that the right does. Of course that's true, but it's a shunt - If we don't like the left doing it, then we can't like the right doing it.

Please don't bother getting into a verbal sparring match with Kimberly, you are miles above her. Kim is mentally crippled and all you are doing is validating she struck a cord with you. In fact, what you have just done is probably insitigate Kim to attack everyone one of your future articles in order to get your responses.

I wanted to note, I am a Fan-O-Ann, and I love her, warts and all. She has said many things in bad taste, and yes, she is so eloquent and skilled verbally that perhaps something better could've been said about Edwards. However, it was a joke in regards to a current event, and it fell flat.

However, I don't want an to apologize for what she said. She's standing tall and supporting her comments, I respect that. Too many on the Right have been painted into a corner and bashed over the head for needless PC terms. I just hope in the future, Ann treads a little more cautiously.

"I knew you were gonna go for the chin -- whatsa matter, can't land a body blow". Ham pummels the midsection "Haha, missed my nose".

Translating for Kimberly
Kimberly's standard:
"The difference being, Icedog, that the commentators you may think exist on the left aren't being paid by the DNC to showcase their bigotry and poor taste at the same events with presidential candidates - essentially assigning their vitriole to the frontrunners in the primary."

ABC's description of Marcotte:
"Amanda Marcotte, a campaign blogger for presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards, quit the campaign Monday, after the incendiary language on her personal blog became too much of a distraction. Marcotte's controversial writings about Christianity continued on her personal blog, Pandagon, even after Edwards had talked to her about no longer making such postings."

Translation for Kimberly: "controversial writings about Christianity continued on her personal blog"="her bigotry and poor taste were showcased while on the payroll of John Edwards, essentially assigning her vitriol to a front-runner in the primary."

Kimberly's standard:
"Frankly, if these bloggers had taken their religious wingnut remarks out in front of a Democratic conference and used such rhetoric to 'rally' the bases, then yeah - I'd be right there with you in pointing the finger. However, that's not the case is it?"

ABC's description:
"Edwards had found himself in a 21st century politician's bind — he did not want to offend the liberal activists of the Internet, the so-called 'netroots,' whose support Democratic politicians want to cultivate."

Translation for Kimberly: "cultivate the 'netroots'"="rally the base"

If you can't see the analogy, I cannot be blamed.

Christians and being rude; Kimberly
Ann claims to be a Christian. We are taught to hate the sin, but love the sinner. I agree that homosexuality is a sin, but gay people are no more sinful than anyone else - I am straight, but I've sinned in my own life, so how can I condemn a gay person? God loves all of us, including gays, despite our sins. That is why Christ died. It is one thing to say "my religion states that homosexuality is a sin", which is a statement of fact, totally different to use a nasty word or try to demean someone.

Calling gay people "fa**ots" or Arabs "ragheads" or blacks "ni**ers" is not conducive to brotherly love and is dehumanizing.

Like MKH, I used to find Coulter very amusing, but she's been getting too extreme. BTW, Kimberly, the left has many people that use biting humor, such as (the late) Molly Ivins - who I did find funny but who was often cutting. I didn't agree with Ivins' politics, but she was witty. I thought Ann Coulter was like that, too, once upon a time - bright, articulate, witty, occasionally biting but making good points. Now Ann seems to have more in common with the lefty "comedians" that I try to avoid.

MK and Kimberly transcript
For those of you late to the MKH v. Kimberly debate I offer this transcript.

Kimberly: "You can't name any any names"
MK: "Marcotte"
Kimberly: "I knew you were gonna say her. She doesn't count. I was right! Name another!"
MK: "#####" (the tubby and kinda homely Shakespeare girl - not meant as an ad hominem, just too lazy to look up her name)
Kimberly: "I knew you were gonna say her too. She doesn't count. I was right. You are so lame"

MK - you should know by now that they get unlimited peremptory challenges whereby they can simply declare your point invalid, exclude it from consideration and declare the debate won. As a bonus they are allowed to ridicule you for your failure to not get admitted into evidence anything that they would allow into evidence.
It makes for a pointless argument but they sure get to feel smarter than you.

No sense of Humor
I wish a lot of people would get a sense of humor.

Ann was merely saying with another word (faggot), what many people think of John Edwards; she wasn't implying he is a homosexual, she meant it in the way Rush means when he calls Edwards "The Breck Girl", or someone else may say "pansy", or "girlie-man".

Ann isn't a homophobe, she doesn't fear homosexuals, she's fearless. She merely has a dim view of males who affect feminine manners.

If a homosexual is affronted by the term "faggot", then it must be true for him; if it doesn't apply, then he has no basis to be affronted.

Ann Coulter's Anti-Gay Sentiments
As a long-time Goldwater conservative (that makes me a libertarian, I suppose), I don't understand why today's religious conservatives, who control the Party, would find Coulter's name calling in such bad taste. Don't most conservatives hate gay people? The very term of abuse Coulter uses, the term "f-g", short for "faggot", makes reference to what enlightened Europeans did to gay people: they were burned alive at the stake.

Frankly, a slur of this sort is no different, to an adult gay man, than making fun of Jews for having the misfortune of Jews during the holocaust (gays were also exterminated by the Nazis). Where is the humor? Unless you just like the smell of burning flesh.

The United States is a profoundly homophobic culture and the source lies in religion, but comments by Coulter certainly do little to raise the moral level of political discourse.

Coulter and the other homophobes whose letters are printed in response to her anti-gay attack simply reveal to everyone that so-called contemporary conservatives love big government, big budgets, and they especially love it when government gets involved in the intimacies of people's lives, telling them who they can adopt, who they can marry, what they are supposed to feel, who they can love.

Why should anyone in the Republican Party or among Conservatives object to Coulter's remarks? I, for one, appreciate her passionate honesty.

It's nice to know who your enemies are.

Sean is right, when are you conservatives going to learn? As Sean pointed out, first you guys cause Hurricane Katrina, and then send a paultry $200 billion (was that change from the couch?). Then you secretly destroy some hospital rooms at Walter Reed to make our soldiers suffer (you Repubs are pretty sly at your politics). Although Libby wasn't guilty of anything, you guys MUST have done something or all the media and liberals wouldn't be so upset. Finally, you guys create this fictional "Islamic Terrorism" boogeyman so you can kill our soldiers (for some reason)....seriously, you expect us to believe that people would actually blow themself up on purpose, just to kill women and children?!

Keep spreading the word Sean, the truth can't be stopped!!

There is some value to the shock factor.
Sure, we all know as conservatives we are more intellectually honest (as a whole) than the left when it comes to the notion of there being a standard of decent behavior. If one were to itemize the deplorable comments and ideas spouted out loud by the left side of the aisle the list would circle the earth a few times. And sure we all get frustrated that these comments and commentators are all laughed off as hip, trendy, or artistic license. Even when a US Senator (Durbin) equates the US Military with Nazi's it's all given a pass. It's all ignored and swept into the memory hole in the hope that the only people who will notice it are those political junkies who dig into this stuff. When a major figure such as Ann says something provocative, even if it violates what we would consider civil language it does serve as a point in comparison to the deplorable stuff on the left. All the (inevitable) hoopla generated by it mught, just might, shine a little light on the other stuff. I think if you were to take a measure Ann's comments amount to a small single pebble in a huge pile of rocks that are the prevailing voice coming from the left. Most of those rocks the same ones Alec Baldwin hoped to incite his fans to stone "Henry Hyde and his family to death".

Romney's macaca moment
Has anyone seen the behind the scenes video of Romney yucking it up with Coultergeist.

Is this his "macaca" moment and the hopes of his presidential bid? Hey, if you live by the sword than you die by the sword, right?

There is abosolutely no defense to using the word "faggot" in political discourse. All of you hate-monger appeasers (the lets put it in context crowd) are destroying the republican party - it is truly amazing to watch the house of cards crumble

You've got Katrina, the 2007 Katrina (Walter Reed), Libby guilty, US Attorney scandal, 90 more dead plus 9 soldiers in Iraq (that pesky one bombing a day, right Laura), and the list goes on and on.

And to top it all off you have the darling of the right wing calling a presidential candidate a faggot - the world must be wondering what in the heck is going on over here.

Stand by your Ann

What's all the fuss about? The use of the word 'faggot' is just more of Ann Coulter being Ann Coulter. And now everyone's bent out of shape? Though I agree with Ann Coulter's conservative views, I've always found that her self-cousciously slick, hard-hitting writing style gets in the way of what she's saying. Her recent 'gaffe' is nothing more than Ann saying out loud what she routinely writes in her columns. What a bunch of fair-weather friends her followers are!

Moral High Ground
Well said MK. I'm very glad to hear so much discussion on this issue. It won't be covered in the MSM but the discussions we have inside the movement are important.

I used to be one of the biggest fans Ann had. Sometimes I go back and read "High Crimes", "Slander", and "Treason" so that I remember that she used to zing the left with irony following well documented evidence of the left's flawed arguments. I stopped reading her column about a year ago. There's been something different. She is a star but the substance is gone.

There's a reason why conservative magazines feature more words than pictures. The substance is important.

Yeah, giving up the moral high ground can lead to the right squeezing out a small victory here and there and also keep losses at a minimum. Saying and doing the right thing can be costly. Barry Goldwater said the right things in 1964 and I don't recall that turning out so good. At least not until 1980.

I would rather do the right thing than win. There's something appealing about dignity and honor.

There's a great metaphor here using Gandhi, one that would make this social studies teacher's career, but this is a comment rather than my blog so I'll have to post it there.

"Look at Me Again, and Again, and Again"
If there's any question left that Coulter is an exhibitionist, notice one dead giveaway. When she is being interviewed and reference is made to something outrageous she has said, she will immediately say something to the effect that she wants more of her to be put on show. "I thought you were going to play my whole speech", or "But read some more of what I said", or "You left out the really funny part". It's not about demanding context, which might be a reasonable way of wanting to be better understood, but about wanting again and again and again that situation of having everybody react to her. You know, the psychodynamic explanation of a man who exposes his genitals in public is that he is seeking confirmation of his (possibly doubted) manhood---when the public reacts with shock and horror, he is reaffirmed. I wonder what Coulter is getting out of being the Conservative movement's shock-jock?

Jump the shark
MKH, your post on this subject is probably the most "fair and balanced" I've seen. They key point about Ann's theatrics is that she has devolved into a conservative Howard Stern (thankfully not Howard K. Stern...) and has jumped the shark.

This is an election cycle where the fealty of social conservatives is going to make or break the GOP candidate. At the present time, the three frontrunners -- Giuliani, McCain, and Romney -- are not true social conservatives. Giuliani admits it and, I think, effectively downplays it by saying that he is committed to federalism and democracy and believes those "social issues" should be dealt with via state-level democratic processes. McCain and Romney try to spin their records -- a less effective strategy.

These social issues, including abortion and gay rights, are very sensitive and nuanced. The "pro gay marriage" or "anti gay marriage" positions must be carefully discussed so that people do not come away with the misleading impression that being against gay marriage means you hate homosexuals.

Ann wasn't even talking about gay rights but, by using one "schoolyard bully" epithet, managed to over-simplify and caricature these social issues. Democrats and independents may well look at Ann shouting anti-homosexual epithets and conclude that any opposition to "gay rights issues" by Republican candidates is driven by an animus against homosexuals. Recognizing that, all of the GOP frontrunners dutifully trotted out and condemned Ann's remarks, which quite possibly sent a signal to social conservatives that none of the candidates agree with them on those issues.

CPAC is about exchanging ideas, hashing out positions on the difficult issues of the day, and coming together as conservatives in common cause for the betterment of the country. Ann managed to throw sand into the gears of that entire process, caricatured a very sensitive and important issue for the GOP, and made everyone look bad. But, God love her, maybe she'll sell some more books -- because we know the primary purpose of everyone's existence is to line Ann's pocketbook. (/sarcasm)

MK - sorry for the loss of your role model. The good news is that Michelle makes for a better female role model anyway.

The 06 elections should not be a surprise -- by historical standards the results were normal. What was abnormal was the 02 and 04 elections resulting in the President's party gaining seats.

As for your comments regarding the high road; do you really want to live in a country that has so lowered its standards of behavior that anything goes is the norm?
Did the Democrats make the Republicans create the scandals you alluded to? No, they didn't -- all the more reason taking the high road and expecting honorable and respectable out of our elected officials and paid party spokespersons is needed more than defending the use of a derogatory/inflammatory term.

And finally, not every Democrat is a far left liberal but if we roll in the mud with their extremists, we surely won't convince those moderate democrats to consider voting republican.

The high ground does not win elections!
The problem with this column is that the Conservatives are proving once again that taking the high road does not win elections. As much as I dislike the Liberal Chicks (previously known as the Dixie Chicks), their song "Not Ready to Make Nice" has a point. The Liberals have not taken the high road and they won the election by throwing ever scandel in the face of the Republicans. Sure, the Republicans can take the high road in 2008, and America will then have 8 years of Queen Hilly and her forced Liberal agenda.

My main point was, of course, that Ann has said much worse things--including using the term "faggot" before. Perhaps someone on the right denounced her then, but it's interesting that now people are taking a stand on Coulter.

What liberal commenter said that he/she was wishing for Cheney's death? Maher made a debatable argument about more people being alive if Cheney died--one that I don't agree with--but he certainly never said he wished Cheney was dead.

Two points
1. Read all of Coulter's speech. When you see the context you'll understand what she was saying. Do you really believe a couple hundred people would laugh if she just walked up to the mic and said, "Edwards is a f*ggot"?

2. Ann should know better. She should know that the old media and the moonbat bloggers would totally edit or fail to mention the context of her speech and would concentrate on this one line.

A wonderful entry
Thank you for that, MKH. I saw Ann on Hannity & Colmes earlier and was actually kind of wavering on whether or not I was actually pissed at her; her speech about how she's not anti-gay and she doesn't know why they're not all Republicans (well, I know why, and it has a lot to do with the fact that the gay media portarys us Log Cabin-types as traitors to the gay cause and blah blah blah, very similar to what happens in other minoirites) kind of made me feel a little better about it. It's not like anyone other than Hannity & Colmes was going to play that part of her speech, of course.

But your wonderfully-written entry made me realize the more important point here. It doesn't matter if it personally offended me or not, and you know I've been called that name many times in much more hurtful contexts, and usually by other gay people, so it doesn't really offend me. The problem is that she said it at CPAC, she said in the same venue our candidates were standing up there trying to make their voices heard. And instead, all the media got out of that was a very familair message: Republicans are homophobic. After all, look at what Ann Coulter called John Edwards at their conference! Michelle Malkin made pretty much the same point on the Factor tonight, and it's all absolutley true. The crime here is that she took CPAC and made it all about her and her lack of tact. It's not neccesairly that you or I were personally offended by her. I kind of was at first but in retrospect, not really. And I don't even really think Ann hates gay people. I think she just likes attention, and she likes making semi-offensive jokes, which usually are funny admittedly. But this wasn't the forum for it, that's all there is to it.

Erosion of American Values
I do not believe in making fun of people who feel inferior already. At the same time, it sickens me when our society teaches my son it is okay to be gay. There are many coaches of high school sports around my town who are gay. I do not believe that is right, and, not long ago, America would not have tolerated it. Unfortunately, we have decided it is easier to tolerate lower morals, than to stand up for what is right, because, then, some morally deviant would call us names and find some morally deviant judge to file a lawsuit. This has predictably lowered our morals, eventually. If you hang around the barber shop long enough, you will eventually get a haircut. I gotta go throw up.

I can't stand controversy over pc speech...or rather non-pc speech. I think she obviously was not using it as an anti-gay slur.

Faggot is clearly impolite, but obviously offensive? You can't deny that it is a funny reference due to the ridiculousness of the dude who went to rehab over it.

Popular humor is often offensive...try watching the Daily Show. But in context its funny and by no means worth this much controversy.

So the question is: within the full context of Ann's full speach is what she said still that shocking...I don't know...maybe still too much for a wimpy CPAC conference....
either way I guess just too much for today's internet connected media world.

In the world of political score keepers, Ann Coulter is the cause celeb.

In fact, I challenge anyone to name a Republican pundit with more star appeal than Ann Coulter.

And therein lies the rub.

Many people such as myself do not enjoy politics as sports.

Where are such Republicans to go?

I can listen to NPR and watch Jim Leher.

I cannot listen to Rush Limbaugh or watch Ann Coulter.

I have not use for juvenile behavior.

I find every right wing media outlet to be the uttmost in juvenile. Whether it is Fox News or Rush Limbaugh.

If Ann Coulter weren't such the nail sticking up there'd be no buzz.

The problem is that liberal bashing is the right wing media.

Every single solitary source from the National Review to Town Hall engages in full on liberal bashing.

The question conservatives need to ask themselves is do they care about sensible voters who value respect and dignity and have no use for juvenile behavior.

When is the right media going to start acting like it cares about right wing issues more than left wing bashing?

Generally agree...
I would agree that net-net, Ann Coulter's performance at CPAC didn't help conservatives. I read MKH's and Medved's columns. I find myself wanting to say, I agree....but...

I'm 39 and I grew up in the Bronx. While we always knew that that word was a nasty word for gay, it was really used more as a synonym for "sissy". Now, I know that that's because gays were assumed to be effeminent (sp?) and that's prejudiced and therefore wrong. I'm only offering this by way of saying that I don't think that she was trying to say Edwards is gay or anything like that, she was saying he's a sissy.

However, all that said, I agree that it was not helpful. Ann Coulter can be so funny and witty and biting, she doesn't need to use those kinds of words.
