Romney's Iowa Operation
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:49 AM

It's easy to forget, but not long ago, Mitt Romney's front-runner status was anything but a foregone conclusion.  Over time, though, he met -- and surpassed -- many goals, thus elevating his campaign into the top-tier.  Some of this was the result of good fortune, some of it was his disciplined and organized campaign, and some of it was his ability to bank-roll his campaign.

In four days, Mitt Romney faces his first real test, the Iowa caucuses.  Heretofore, he has met every challenge, and exceeded every metric.  He is undefeated in pre-season, but now the real season begins...

So how will he do in Iowa?  Anyone who pretends to know the answer to that is pulling your leg.  But if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Mitt Romney to prevail on Thursday.  Here's why:  For one thing, Mike Huckabee seems to have peaked about a week too soon.  And because Huckabee was not terribly well known to begin with, Romney's campaign ads were able to define Huckabee, and introduce many caucus-goers to the negative side of Mike Huckabee.

But the key to Mitt Romney in Iowa is his organization.  People don't just go to caucuses.  A well-run turn-out operation can increase a candidate's votes by 3-5 percent.  My guess is that Romney will be able to make up a 5 point deficit in the polls because of his turnout operation.

Luck also has something to do with it, too.  Forecasters are calling for it to be unseasonably warm weather (if 17 degrees is unseasonably warm).  Huckabee, whose supporters are die-hard Christian activists and hunters, would benefit from bad weather, and low voter turnout.

Assuming Mitt Romney does prevail in Iowa, he will ironically owe Mike Huckabee for having made Iowa a worthwhile victory.  Remember, candidates like Giuliani and McCain were hoping to render Iowa irrelevant by ignoring the state.

A close victory over a tough challenger would demonstrate Mitt Romney is a tested candidate who has overcome difficult obstacles.

To continue over-extending football metaphors, Mitt Romney is playing a series of "road games":  He's playing Huckabee on his Iowa turf, McCain on his "home turf "of New Hampshire, and arguably, Rudy on his "home turf" of Florida.

Winning these road games would give him the credibility and confidence to unite the Republican Party behind him.

Again, anything could happen.  It's hard to quantify Mike Huckabee's support.  Some of his voters may be first-time caucus-goers.  No doubt, Huckabee's supporters have intensity on their side.

Still, if you're playing the percentages, the person who has run the smartest campaign -- based on using history to guide his strategy -- is Mitt Romney.

The Big Headed Liberal "Slick" Romney
The most abhorrent thing in this election is Mitt Romney who held liberal positions across the board for years as a liberal Massachusetts politician who “fought conservatives”... until he began plotting a couple of years ago to run as a “Republican” for President.

Indeed, liberal positions spewed for years from the big head’s mouth including…

Pro-choice
Pro-gay marriage
Pro-fetal stem cell research
Pro-amnesty
Anti-second ammendment
Anti-Reagan

The unprecedented across-the-board Romney flip flops were all politically motivated for his White House bid as a “Republican.” A 50+ year old man doesn’t just suddenly change his positions on every social issue. He just conceals his true beliefs.

Here’s another article proving that Romney is a big fat Liberal in phony conservative clothing. As a matter of record, 75% of Romney’s hand-picked judicial appointees have been Liberals, Democratic party activists, same-sex marriage advocates, abortion rights supporters, and left-leaning Independents. Nice job, Mitt.

This pathological liar Romney also created a state-controlled health care system in Massachusetts that would make Fidel Castro proud. Endorsed by Ted Kennedy, Romney’s “Commonwealth Care” plan provides unlimited abortions at taxpayer expense.

Winning the Battle and Losing the War
Despite little money, being outspent 20 to 1, having all the conservative establishment chattering class line up with Romney, and being beaten up daily over "floating crosses" and other things, Huck still leads in Iowa. His coming in second, if that happens, will not hurt him. By dividing the GOP Mitt and his paid hit man Rush will have won the battle and lost the war.

Huck's "Faith" Stragtegy Has Worked
Political genius Huckabee, "wise as a serpent but gentle as a dove," will win Iowa due to his strategy to get the press to inject lots of faith-talk into the campaign. This works for Iowa. Now he will shift to other strategies of a more populist tone, not fearing the establishment chattering class of the GOP, and will win Michigan and South Carolina. Huck is smarter than Barnum and Bailey at publicity stunts, but he may want to let Rollins advise him more hear on out. But Huck will remain Huck and fight for the pro-life cause.

Mitt South of the Mason-Dixon Line?
I keep remembering John Kerry's ridiculous "Who among us doesn't like NASCAR?" quote from 2004. Whenever I hear Mitt talking about "non-sequitars" and "null sets", I can't help but recall the clumsy way elitist Bostonians attempt to relate to the common man.

Face it, Mitt's got the stiff demeanor and robotic vocal tone of Al Gore with the flip-flopping positions and overly slick, polished, technocratic Northeastern political speak of John Kerry. None of which is a formula for turning blue states RED, or even holding together the 2000/04 electoral map for us. He'll continue in the tradition of Kerry, Dukakis, Tsongas, and so many others from Massachusetts. The average American just doesn't relate well to Northeastern elitist politicians.

Please take a few seconds to watch this.
This video is very good and shows Mitt Romney's going back and forth on the abortion issue.

Romney was for it big time, then against it, then for it, then against it.

It is interesting for people to see that he has claimed to change to being pro-life before, only to return to being pro-choice when it would help him out politically.

Romney = Recipe for GOP Disaster in '08
Let's get realistic about Romney as a general election candidate, please.

Does anyone REALLY believe he can beat Hillary or Obama in his two "home states" of MASSACHUSETTS and MICHIGAN? Both of which are the deepest of blue in Presidential elections.

I vividly recall mocking Al Gore for not being able to carry Tennessee in 2000. I sure don't want that national embarassment for my party's candidate in 2008.

Romney will have one heck of a hard time winning Southern & border states like Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana, both due to his style and on substance (for/against: gun control, gay rights, abortion).

Don't think it's possible for our GOP candidate to lose those states? Think again.

Arkansas is traditionally a very Democrat state, 90% of its elected officials are Dems. Romney's feud with Huckabee has likely won him a lot of disfavor there, and Clinton Inc. still have a lot of allies in that state, Romney has few to none.

Louisiana is also a traditional Democrat state, albeit a Conservative one, that may be hard to predict because of the effect of Katrina on its demographics. Where would his natural base of support be in a state like Louisiana or Arkansas, and how much energy/time would he have to direct to it?

ALL THREE states, including Missouri, have elected Democrat women to the Senate, so it's not totally out of the question that Hillary could steal one or two of those states. If that happens, we're screwed, because we'll have to pick up some 2004 blue states to make up the electoral votes.

MITT ROMNEY: THE GREAT AMERICAN WEENIE!
NOW I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR ROMNEY!!!

ROMNEY IS TOO NEGATIVE, MEAN AND NASTY. MITT ROMNEY WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SPOUT negative Ads against McCain and Huckabee. Not too long ago Romeny was way down in the polls by a large margin then suddenly Romney places highly negative ads against Huckabee and made dishonest statements against him within his print media. For two weeks Huckabee did not respond with negative ads. Since Huckabee did not retaliate negatively to Romney's ads, some thought that Huckabee was conceding that they were true about Huckabee. Then Huckabee's poll numbers started to go down with Romney in the lead.

Suddenly Huckabee threatens those negative ads and the hate mail hand delivered to peoples doors from Romney by presenting the truth about his own record and facts about Romney's record then suddenly Romney wimpy Romney cries out, "Not fair... I should be the only one to be allowed to use negative ads because the republican establishment will let me get away with it."

So when Romney gets a taste of his own medicine from any other candidate, he falls apart and screams that everyone else is being negative.
WHAT A WEASLE and A PHONEY!!!

Huckabee is the BEST candidate for the dangerous times that we live in. What also makes Mike Huckabee the most logical candidate is that he is not only attracts Republicans but also Democrats to his side without compromising his principles. Both side support is needed to win this election in 2008 and he has it.

These polls do not include effects of the Huckabee "I am not attacking Romney" attack interview (The Rep version of the Dean Scream).

Based on the current polls it has come down to the best GOTV. Romney's Organization vs the fair tax, home schoolers, and pastor network of Huck.

More on Mitt's background:

My relatives were in the same LDS Mexican colony (started by Brigham Young - settlements where there was water and good land); my mom's parents (newly weds) were chased off their farm, also fleeing Pancho Villa. Dirt poor, leaving all behind, they started all over as a young couple in So. AZ. These were literate individuals who loved learned and the arts but were not afraid to make a living in the raw deserts of the West.

When George Romney was governor in Michigan, he took considerably less than the full governor's salary. I remember an article quoting him that $35,000 was plenty of money for any one to live on. Also that same article (probably a San Francisco newspaper) said how George didn't want to spoil his sons so they had chores and slept outside in sleeping bags (like most of us at that time did-- the world was safer)when traveling instead of going to a motel. Seems hard to belief that the US was ever that picturesque and safe!

My family was middle class but motels and eating out were luxuries in that time. I thought it was great that George Romney was rich but lived middle class. I identified with the Romney as a teen because of the shared family history of being run of family orchards and farms that were very productive. Coming full circle my Harvard MBA son knew the Romneys in Belmont (Boston) and even worked in his campaign against Ted Kennedy. And the circle continues as some in my family work to support Mitt's candidacy for President. Small world sometimes.

Mitt's silver spoon had a lot of average, middle class values and habits attached to it. As an LDS youth he would have been taught to give service in life, not to sit back with an air of entitlement that plagues so much of our current culture.

Nice point CoachNy.
Hey Prof and Mark. We know you don't like Mitt but you don't say who you support. Are you guys Ron Paul nutjobs? Come on now. Be honest.
To all you just scrolled down and only saw Mark's smear of Romney's background:a while back Medved was taking calls and some of the callers were making the same points I am on Mitt v. Huck and Mike poo pooed them saying that Huck is a self-made guy and Mitt was a spoiled gov's son. Well, great for Huck that he has done as much as he has given his background. But it's not like the Romneys are the Bushes, old WASP money and all that. George Romney ,mitt's dad, was born in a Mormon colony in MEXICO. He was basically a refugee, fleeing Pancho Villa's revolution I think. He didn't go to college. He was a self-made guy for sure. Mitt himself excelled at Stanford, graduated tops at BYU where I doubt they have the same disease of grade inflation as the ivy league, especially in the 60s. Graduated highly from Harvard Bus and law concurrently -the very top of the bus. school, actually. Then climbed to the top of bus. consulting and venture capital world. I don't think that was George Romney's money he was playing around with at Bain & Co.. So to say Romney is not a self-made guy just b/c his dad was successful isn't exactly fair. Mitt made his own way in a field completely diff from his dad's and in an entirely different world from his own which is very cutthroat.

C'mon. I can understand not favoring Mitt over the other candidates, but let's not get ridiculous. Mitt's work ethic is better than any of the other candidates (as shown by how hard he has campaigned). His lead in Iowa is attributable to his hard work, the financial support of real voters (vast majority of campaign money came from them), and a winning message.

Vote who you like, by all means. But make some minimal effort to be informed.

Mitt Romney was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father was a multi-millionaire. He grew up a child of privledge. He hasn't had to work hard, just spend millions of dollars running negative ads in a desperate attempt to influence voters.

Romney will shock the world by winning Iowa by 10 points over Huckabee.

Contrary to popular blog opinion, McCain will NOT finish 3rd in Iowa. Thompson will win that honor.

After placing a distant 4th in Iowa (illegal immigration is Iowan's #1 issue and McCain's worst), McCain will lose to Romney in NH as well as a resurgent Thompson takes McCain votes in NH.

Romney will then go on to run the table on the first 6 contests.

I don't know who'll win
But Mitt Romney has demonstrated his approach to new problems, first informing himself through study and getting the best available counsel, and then organizing and working hard. He has chosen a proven strategy for a candidate who isn't well known, and his qualities as an executive include charisma, intelligence and communications.

His Mormonism, his "flip-flopping" and his somewhat overplayed confidence are probably his biggest drawbacks. Applying a religious test is really Un-American. His changes on abortion are not so much changes in basic beliefs as in emphasis. If you run in Massachusetts, you don't take positions that are sure to get you defeated, but on a national stage, you can emphasize all your beliefs. Knowing the Mormon religion, I would find it very surprising if he weren't really pro-life. Despite what you may have heard, the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS does worship the Father and the Son and believes that God's first commandment to multiply and replenish the earth has never been rescinded.

As for his energy and hard-sell personality, I think that this is how he has succeeded in business. He may seem a little too much like The Music Man for Iowans, but over time, people will recognize his sincerity, intelligence and energy for what they are.

It's unfortunate that our campaigns operate on the assumption that the winner will be able to rule without regard to the others in government, some elected, most not. One has to try to imagine how a candidate will be able to work with Congress to solve problems, not what he would do if he were an absolute ruler. I think that Romney has demonstrated an ability to work with legislatures and bureaucracies who aren't friendly to him, to achieve results that incorporate conservative principles. That takes creativity, understanding and salesmanship, along with commitment to principles. That description reminds me more of Ronald Reagan than any of the other candidates.

They can't even expose the negatives of a guy that the media was killing. If your looking for a leader, you have to vote Romney. The rest can't even compete in all the states to win the presidency! McCain has K Street Money
The WaPo says McCain is the King of K street. The so called reformer is doing just he opposite of what he publicly positions.

....a recent study by the nonpartisan Campaign Finance Institute and the liberal advocacy group Public Citizen found that McCain has more lobbyists raising funds for his presidential bid than do any of his rivals.

He has 32 "bundlers" of donations who are lobbyists. Former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani (R) is the closest to him with 29 lobbyist bundlers, followed by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) with 18.

McCain's campaign has also been guided by lobbyists. Davis, the campaign manager, is a former lobbyist who represented major telecommunications companies. The campaign's senior adviser is Charles R. Former congressman Tom Loeffler (R-Tex.) was brought in to shore up the campaign's finances and operations yet still maintains his day job as chairman of the Loeffler Group, whose clients include oil, auto and telecommunications companies as well as a tobacco firm and an airline client.

Their firms' clients have been a significant source of campaign contributions to McCain.

Tired of words
As a man who is tired of politicians and their words I am willing to forgive Romney for bad statements when I look at his record and actions and see that he always governed as a Pro-life governor and will continue to do so as our next President.

Matt has all his bases covered.
Now, no matter what happens in Iowa, Matt can claim he told us so.
Then, he can write one of those self-aggrandizing posts where he says, "I predicted this" prior to the Iowa Caucuses.

PC--crystallizing moment of '94 mismatch
[PC on December 31, 2007 12:38 PM]"right now he is successfully fighting 2 fronts. It's a good way to show how he can successfully fight Billary."

How come Romney didn't win in 1994 against Kennedy?

The Real Romney?-- 5:04 long, from debate with Ted Kennedy shortly before the 1994 tsunami that swept Republicans into control of Congress (Romney failed to beat Kennedy that year)
TOPICS:
abortion, homosexuals and the Boy Scouts, wasn't Republican during Reagan-Bush years, affirmative action

Do you like Romney's reply to the question posed to him below?

Fitzgerald, Joe. 6 April 2002. "Mitt must find his way to less-traveled high road" _Boston Herald_
http://www.prolifefederation.org/custom3.asp
So Mitt Romney, whose wooing of Bay State voters formally begins at today's GOP convention in Lowell, has a big decision to make, one hopefully born of experience, particularly that 1994 campaign when Ted Kennedy toyed with him.

The crystallizing moment of that mismatch came in a debate when Mitt muffed two questions, both belt-high fastballs, though you never would have known it by the way he froze at the plate.

Having asserted he believed abortion is wrong, he was asked why he didn't feel a moral responsibility to actively discourage it.

It was a wonderful question, especially for someone whose life is instructed by his faith, yet he replied with the backbone of an amoeba, insisting "my personal beliefs should not be brought into this campaign," that we shouldn't "impose our beliefs on other people," and that abortion should be supported because it's the law.
==
Romney wasn't asked to disobey a law; he was asked if he wanted to dismantle it, prompting verbal gymnastics that were, prophetically, Olympian.

Yes the ads are truthful. If you do not think McCain was pro amnesty you have had your head in the sand the last 3 years. I personally heard him talk up amnesty a year ago. McCain is an American hero but he has historcally been proamnesty and weak on immigration as has Huckabee. Romney only uses quotes from newspapers and votes to point out the policy differences and never attackes either man personally like Mccain and Huckabee have resorted to. I wish we could keep this about issues.

I recall hearing portions of a 2-day interview of an ex-LDS relative of Joseph Smith, the interview being done by Hank Hanegraaff on his 'Bible Answer Man' radio program.
The woman being interviewed mentioned something along the lines of, in LDS theology, there's something significant about a Mormon becoming President of the U.S.
According to LDS theology, what is significant about a Mormon becoming President of the U.S.?

religiously lib don't you realise this is precisely what politicians are supposed to be doing in Washington, D.C.? WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY There is not a Democrat in the bloody country who can defeat Mitt Romney. Stop dreaming.

It's Funny
To see people call Romney a flip flopper. No one has done a 180 on immigration like Huck has. There was a whole littany of pro immigrant groups who supported Huck in Ark. He tried to use taxpayer money to open a mexican consulate there. Those same groups are now feeling extemely betrayed by Huck's new tough positions. There's a big difference in being passive on an issue like Mitt and his lawnkeepers and being an advocate for people who are tring to circumvent our laws and get a toe hold in this country. Huck advocated for Dumond to be released and he has lied about his role in it. Prisoners flooded Huck's clemency office hoping to get released before he left office. Huck averaged pardoning a convict every 4 days in office, that is astounding.

as a liberal, i believe the one easiest to beat for the democrats is romney but even more importantly, i believe romney is the most liberal of all the republican candidates and would be willing to work with the democratic congress as he did in mass.

McCain and Huckabee
going after Romney together this weekend looked pretty weak. If they can't take polite Mitt pointing out their records, neither one is going to be able to handle the Clinton machine.

Mitt has worked hard for his successes along the way, which is a very American quality that I like about him. He has proved he has staying power. I want that kind of strength in a candidate. I truly believe Mitt Romney is the GOP's best candidate to win in November 2008.

Jsmith - you're kidding, right?
Huckabee has had an avalanche of good press from the MSM. There's proof - the DNC has only issued 4! negative press releases on Huck. Romney has the most at about 100. Romney has been assailed for one solid year by practicaly everyone. Yet, he has come through and not resorted to namecalling or whining.

Thank heaven there are some outlets who report on Huck's horrible record and character. He is only in the thick of it right now because his record was completely unknown a few weeks ago. Shining the light of truth on Huck is melting him faster than anyone I've ever seen.

Romney's Iowa Operation
We have a large group of candidates...a woman, a black man, and attorney, a mayor, senators, a preacher, a libertarian and a very successful governor in his personal life, (38 years of marriage to Ann with five successful sons) in business (Staples, Domino's Pizza, Bain Capital ($250,000,000 personal worth) and governing Massachusetts (strong liberal Democrat state) as a Republican, saving the Utah Olympics from disaster, a law degree(with honors), MBA degree at the same time from Harvard...and much, much more. NONE of the above mentioned candidates can touch his experience and integrity. Well now, Mitt Romney haters let me see how you spin this in favor of your candidate of choice.

Here's some real news about the REAL HUCKABEE. Please see the links below.

its remarkable that Huck is in the race within few points despite the non-stop negative press from people like Hugh, corner, politico, MSM, drudge etc.

I wonder if the same heat was on McCain or Romney if they would remain this close in Iowa.

Hey, thats why they play the game - may the best man win

I admire Romney
He has been able to do what most people said was impossible. And he's done it with integrity, hard work, and conservative credentials.

With a win in Iowa, even more quality endorsements are sure to follow. Romney is indeed the man to beat. And right now he is successfully fighting 2 fronts. It's a good way to show how he can successfully fight Billary.

The Mormon-Turnout Factor
I'm Mormon and it's been interesting to see how my fellow Mormons are reacting to Huckabee.

Many of us, myself included, were not as gung-ho-Romney as you might think a couple of months ago. I really liked Huckabee for a long time.

I think I am not alone in my feeling that Huckabee has really taken advantage of my religion to propel himself. Now it will be interesting to see how many Mormons cast a vote against Huckabee. Many of us who could have easily been swayed against Romney based on his flips now feel like we're on a mission to trounce Huckabee because of the way he has run his campaign. How could this play out on caucus night?

Estimates are that 3000-7000 Mormons will show up among the total of 100000 +/- republican caucus goers. If that's true, it's a significant number. That's 3-7%. If you combine that with the 5% boost this article gives Romney for his organization, you have a big sway in votes.

When you consider that there's something like 30,000 Mormons in Iowa, it is not unreasonable to expect 10-20% to show up in an election like this.

Are you new to this planet? Hugh wrote a book about it. Feel free to explore this blog too. Lot's of info if you know how to read. (I was wondering where all the paulbots went. Apparently they'll work for anybody.)
Pinto Man writes: Monday, December, 31, 2007 12:22 PM
who knows
Who knows who will win? But you could trade Romney for Kerry and you wouldn't know the difference, they play exactly the same way. They both say whatever you want to hear. Romney is a complete liberal on every issue. Raised taxes, for gun control, said on the 16th he will not further the pro-life movement.

Quit supporting a liberal. I don't even see why he ran as a republican, he would have been great as a democrat. I love it that Lewis and Hugh brag about their negative campaign. That's all they've got, they can't talk about Romney's record.
Pasadena Phil writes: Monday, December, 31, 2007 12:21 PM
Here's the real news of the day
Bloomberg makes a statement on the conditions that would prompt him to run:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/31/us/politics/31bloomberg.h tml?ei=5065&en=2da39fd541678920&ex=1199682000&partner=MYWAY &pagewanted=print

He will run if both parties don't unite. But around whose agenda? THAT is why we need to nominate a solid conservative. Winning the GOP nomination when conservatives outnumber GOP voters by 30% to 25% won't mean a damn thing if it just amounts to a surrender to the liberal, one-world, post-partisan agenda. That is what a McCain, Giuliani or Huckabee nomination would signify. Let's not make that mistake.
