Obama Won't Distance Himself from Wright

Barack Obama refused to rebuke controversial sermons from his longtime pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright in which Wright invokes racial slurs and condemns America.
Instead, Obama would only say he "disagrees" with some things Wright has said and people were "cherrypicking" from Wright's sermons.
Here is the transcript of an interview David Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review did with Obama on the subject:
Q: I don't know if you've seen it, but it's all over the wire today (from an ABC News story), a statement that your pastor (the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side) made in a sermon in 2003 that instead of singing "God Bless America," black people should sing a song essentially saying "God Damn America
A: I haven't seen the line. This is a pastor who is on the brink of retirement who in the past has made some controversial statements. I profoundly disagree with some of these statements. Q: What about this particular statement? A: Obviously, I disagree with that. Here is what happens when you just cherry-pick statements from a guy who had a 40-year career as a pastor. There are times when people say things that are just wrong. But I think it's important to judge me on what I've said in the past and what I believe.

The issues of Obama and McCain are separate and should be handled that way.
You have this notion odd that the "weight" of Wright's wrong is equal to the "weight" of McCain's minister.
Are you saying that Wright's hate-filled words ought to canceled out by the statements allegedly made by McCain's minister?
That's a rather simplistic avoidance of the issues.
Is McCain's minister offically part of his campaign team, as Wright was of Obama's? Doesn't that matter at all? Or, don't you understand the difference?
If you want to be "fair," as I know you liberals do, how do you propose to measure the "weight" of each preacher's offenses?
Do you want to count the number of words? The number of days on which the words were used? The number of congregation members hearing the words? The impact on each of the listeners? How do you propose to "weigh" them to find out if they are equal?
Or does it not matter to you, because you are so blindly devoted to Obama that any negative from another candidate's side would do?
If McCain's minister spoke out against others, and against *America* to the extent that Wright spoke out, and for as long as Wright held those ghastly views, then he warrants outrage, too. No question about it.
So, Isabella, what do you propose as a way of determining how to measure the "equality" of the statements? |

Obama has denounce the reverend's words - that's a fact, and it is enough.
What has McCain done about the endorsement of a Catholic-hater? Nothing. And anti-gay Parsley gets a free ride.
Hypocrites. |

It took the man 30 hours to respond to these hateful speeches full of AMERICA HATING RHETERIC. Is this how he would govern? Hussein would take 30 hours to respond to an attack on the USA (domestic or foreign).....or call his pastor and mentor to figure out what to do. Well then, his vows as president would mean he would have to treat Rev. Wright as an enemy of this country, after all, if he thinks God should damn america, his thinking reflects that of Bin Ladin. I wonder if they worship the same "Great God". SERIOUSLY! |

This should have been the title of Obama's "strong denounciation" of his mentor' s speech regarding 9/11 and evil white people or is it all americans who arent black ( am unclear). After 30 hours of these hate speeches hitting the air non-stop, the man with the message of "hope" and "new direction" stated he strongly disagreed with the statements and - get this "he has never heard Wright say these things when he was attending his church and at no time in private did he use such language". So we stupid americans, are expected to believe that Obama is hearing about these views for the FIRST TIME, just like we are? Common, even people who did not attend Harvard Law have some common sense. If superdelegates will not do their partriotic duty to give Hussein his walking papers, ALL AMERICANS need to do their patriotic duty and keep this LIAR and AMERICAN THREAT out of the whitehouse! |

For more than one Sunday with this bilge spewing forth would make me leave. Staying indicates agreement, regardless of public statements. |

means...Obama doesn't know Wright from wrong...get it? What do you mean that's a racist comment? It is not. It's a play on words...no, I'm not saying that he has no ethical compass; I'm just...oh never mind. Just annoint him president and pass a bill that we're not allowed to criticize him...good grief our country is turning into a bad joke with this political correctness garbage. |

What if John McCain said that blacks in America should take a lesson from whites, who have higher average incomes, more intact families, a lower incarceration rate, etc.?
Do you think the mainstream media would be apoplectic, as well as the average American? Of course. But a black preacher can make racist statements, blame whites for every ill blacks have suffered, and the media--and elected Democratic officials--are silent.
The Obama phenomenon has demonstrated that the left still suffers from the stain of identity politics, which, in the case of race, is judging others by the color of their skin.
That, of course, recalls Martin Luther King's invocation that we judge others based on the content of their character--a lesson the modern liberal might take to heart.

We've know for months that Obama will not wear an American flag pin, he will not put his hand on his heart for nor sing the National Anthem. Michelle Obama's words fit the pastor's position. Neither are coming out and repudiating him.
What you see in Obama's actions and words is exactly what you get. Make no mistake about it. |
