Hillary's Game
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 11:23 PM

My fellow Americans, I have lived in The White House.  I know something about the challenges that a President must confront.  And as you can imagine, I've gotten to know Barack pretty well over the last 18 months.  I've seen how his background has given him a unique and valuable perspective on America -- and the world.  I've noticed how his life experiences have given him a deep love for this country, and appreciation for the opportunities it offers.  I've watched him fight hard for the causes he believes in, with the instincts he honed working in the toughest parts of my hometown, Chicago.  And I know that he has the wisdom, the judgment, the heart and the character to tackle the problems we must face, and to lead us to the tomorrow that we, as Americans, deserve.  He is the person we need in The White House now, he will be a great President and Commander-in-Chief, and I support Barack Obama enthusiastically!

Oh, wait.  That's the speech Hillary didn't give.  On MSNBC, Andrea Mitchell is reporting that "there was a change in the hall tonight."  All the pundits there seem happy with what she did.  And if they're right, and this speech does the trick, all I can say is that the Hillary supporters sell out pretty easily.

Sorry to be the contrarian skunk at the garden party.  But as far as I can tell, Hillary continued to play the game that's she played brilliantly, so far.  She said she supports Barack, and told everyone to vote for him . . . without offering any real reasons why they should, reasons that might inadvertantly convince someone actually to do it.  Her words of support, of course, allow her to ask anyone who doubts her commitment, Well, what else was I supposed to say?

But as a shrewd politician -- and the wife of a very shrewd politician -- she knows the objectives of a political convention: To give the country a comfort level with a candidate on a personal level, along with good, solid reasons that he is not just the better choice -- but the best one for the country at this particular time.  Her speech advanced neither objective for Obama.

Critiquing the Bush administration and linking her "friend" John McCain with it (and quite gently, compared to what could have been said) isn't a reason to vote for Barack Obama as an individual, after all.  The only reason she gave to vote for Barack?  Because she said so.  And that's because she's a Democrat, and he's a Democrat, and the Republicans are bad.  (She's a team player, don't you know?). She actually had nicer things to say both about Michelle Obama and Joe Biden than about Barack himself.

Her allusions to Barack were formulaic -- "Barack Obama knows [insert Hillary priority/Democratic policy]."  That's it.  In other words, he's the right choice insofar as he agrees with her (rather than she agrees with him because he's great).  Tomorrow, will anyone be able to recite a reason that Barack merits their votes, or will they merely recall that good sport Hillary urged them to vote for him?

She did a fabulous job --  for herself, that is.  If her goal was to make the conventioneers wonder if they had nominated the wrong person, she may well have succeeded.   And going forward, my bet is that the Clinton people will continue to say everything they must in order to be able to defend Hillary from charges that her lack of support cost Barack the election -- even as they do as little as possible to really help him.

They'll do all the right things in public, while indulging in little maneuvers and leaking little tidbits designed to raise inarticulable suspicions about their true feelings (update: things like this), thereby keeping alive a little frisson of resentment among her supporters.  And if and when Barack loses, she'll tell the Democrats: I did everything I could, didn't I?  I told people to vote for him, after all.

Yup.  That's the Clinton magic.

You are proving her point, genius. Clinton DID score. Obama didn't.

Sorry to burst another bubble, but only the cook fringe left has the "white house at all cost" agenda. Blue-collar Democrats do NOT have that agenda. They want to vote for a candidate with a solid platform and values, not a crazed leftwing racist Marxist-wanna-be.

Fortunately for you, the GOP has the same problem (for various other reasons) with McShame. I'm very hopeful that the third party candidates, combined, will have a substantial % of votes, coming from both sides of the isle.

Notice how Obama who was soooooo
opposed to giving Bill Clinton any acknowledgement for his accomplishments for the economy during his presidency, is NOW using Bill Clinton's coat tails to try to shore up his standing?

Giving Clinton credit will now be his new mantra for trying to sway voters, nevermind that Obama has YET to lay out how he intends to accomplish all those programs from taxpayer dollars.

Only a fool would believe that Obama will not raise taxes. there is absolutely no way he can fund any of his programs without massive tax increases.

Obama would be easier to beat than Hillary.

Hillary knew it too.

Democrats always get too cocky
and then shoot themselves in the foot. We were told about the two candidates, an African-American and a woman, which by all accounts should be a winning combination. However, the Obama camp accused fellow Democrats of racism whenever they criticized Obama and then blamed Republicans for that.If Obama had picked Hillary as his running mate they would have won. The question: what is it exactly that drives the Democrats need for failure?

You guys just don't get it
Democrats were energized about this election long before there was a candidate. Clinton, brilliantly, reminded Dems what this race was all about and did so with gasp...humility.

Clinton's stock went up with me considerably tonight.

Barack, math challenged?
She writes for the 90% who enjoy the drama created by the nominee created by the DNC. The man who started out with Wright as his mentor and pastor, Trinity Unholy Church as his worship place, Powers as his foreign policy advisor, Oprah as his marketing machine, and Kennedy's as his guilty white supporters motivation machine. Now he is just 'kintakunte' who has learned to deny everything he believed in and the people who got him here....he has become Toby. The Obama's do not inspire anybody except racist blacks who vote for him because he is black, whites who use guilt instead of good sense, and foreigners who live here and want to see america destroyed. This fake man won't be president...and that is very good news for Israel and the rest of america. God Bless America!

Biden - ' Obama has 6th sense'
Today or was it yesterday, Biden said 'this guy' refering to Obama, has a sixth sense about things. He then quoted his mother saying that some people were instict driven. Guess what, americans have a sixth sense too, and they won't be voting for Obamacide - the gamble aint worth it Biden but nice try. The bar for competency and capability to run for POTUS has been lowered to '6th sense'. If his 6th sense was really good, he would have been a successful partner in a law firm like Hillary. Don't these people know we think they are dumb?
serah writes: Wednesday, August, 27, 2008 1:23 AM
Giselle, what qualifies Obama as POTUS?
We understand you think McCain is wrong because the backed Bush, but you haven't given any undecided voters reason to vote for Obama. That is the problem with an affirmative action nominee - he lacks CREDENTIALS that make him attractive, except his skin tone. That is why McCain will win.
serah writes: Wednesday, August, 27, 2008 1:18 AM
Nobody has a reason to vote for Hussein
Carol, it's not intentional, it's just the facts. Barack hussein Obama does not have anything on his resume to cite as evidence that he would make a good commander in chief. And would be true if he was the ONLY candidate running unopposed. The truth is - and I am not denying Hillary's shrewedness - Barack's problem is , he lacks any major accomplishment to give any rational thinker the comfort that he can do a quarter of the things he says he will do. The best argument for barack was given by Chris Rock the comedian ' people ask if we are ready for a black president, why not, we've already had a retarded one?'. Even Chris Rock in his very intelligent humour could not give ONE reason why Barack would make a good president except - he is NOT Bush. This loosing strategy was tried in 2004 and it failed. I am glad Barack the next loser is using it and glad that kerry thinks because Barack is half-black the strategy will be sugar coated with 'change and hope' to fool americans. Unfortunately, Barack's resume does not match his rheteric. Al Gore must be kicking himself because this year, he would have won with a landslide coming off the nobel prize win, the Oscar win and great exposure addressing the UN........McCain is the right man for the job given Barack's LACK OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. Who knew being born bi-racial and raised by grandparents is an accomplishment?
Marty writes: Wednesday, August, 27, 2008 12:55 AM
Change is just a word
It's a slogan not a solution to the problems we are faced with today. When pressed Obama never presents concrete solutions to our so-called problems. And tonight I missed the part of her speech when Hillary said Obama has the experience to be commander in chief.

What speech was the author listening to? Clinton repeatedly invoked THE prime motivation for Dems this year, putting a Democrat in the White House.

Sellout easily?
"all I can say is that the Hillary supporters sell out pretty easily."

Kind of like Republicans wouldn't you say? Here is McCain's fatal assumption: that conservatives will eventually come home while the Hillary voters wouldn't. So conservatives and Hillary voters have to be truly and deeply stupid for McCain to win. At least Obama doesn't hide his being a liberal. That is why most conservatives will vote 3rd party and why Hillary voters will go to Obama.

Dumbest campaign ever. Could we just sink the GOP Titanic right now and concentrate on Congress where the real power lies?
Barack writes: Tuesday, August, 26, 2008 11:54 PM
Huh???
Why are you calling them "Hillary" and "Barack", but you never say "John" or "George"? Seems pretty disrespectful to me.

Anyway, the reason I bothered to leave a comment (nobody else has yet), is because NOBODY CARES!
On a poll yesterday, 10% of Townhall.com visitors said they did not plan to watch Michelle Obama's speech, and I'd bet a similar amount of ignoramuses wouldn't bother to watch Senator Clinton, either. I don't know why you even bother to write about it. Your readers could not care less.
