Email on Fred
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:50 PM

I got this email from a conservative writer who asked to remain anonymous ...

I totally agree with your take on Thompson. The last candidate with a resume this thin was John Edwards. Although a lawyer Thompson tends to get every legal issue wrong-campaign finance reform, affirmative action, tort reform, etc. He was entirely AWOL over the alst few years when others have been fighting for party and country. I think he is the conservative Obama. I'm not a McCain supporter but there is simply no comparison between the two. I'm a Romney critic of the first order and even he has better credentials. What is more, Thompson lacks any cross over appeal that Rudy or McCain might have so in the end he is a loser for the GOP. But he is good in those TV shows.

does Matt Lewis know Michael Hiltzik ?

Matt,

I realize you're feeling a little defensive, considering how your snarky post on Tuesday dismissing Fred Thompson wasn't exactly a home run with Townhall readers.

I understand you're looking for support for that particular post.
But if your "anonymous emailer" is a conservative writer/commentator, why wouldn't that person want to have their name publicly acknowledged ?
I mean, isn't giving commentary for public consumption what that writer does for a living ?
Why would they be hesitant to make public a few remarks about Fred Thompson's viability as a potential candidate ?

This sounds suspiciously similar to your blog post from a couple weeks ago when you claimed to have an alleged anonymous source within the Brownback campaign who (allegedly) asserts the Catholic vote "BELONGS" to Brownback.

Here's a new idea for you.

Turn off the TV, because if you think any of the current crop of politicians have any "NEW" ideas, you are enjoying too much tube.

This isn't about NEW ideas, this election is going to be about making what has been proven to work, work again.

As a matter of fact...
Compare Hillary's immigration votes to McCain's

HILLARY;
YES on giving Guest Workers a path to citizenship: STRONGLY Favors topic

YES on establishing a Guest Worker program: Favors topic

YES on allowing illegal aliens to participate in Social Security: Strongly Favors topic

SOUND FAMILIAR????

Fred
Fred has very high visibility and that translates to big buzz. But I think he reads scripts better than he writes them. I don't think he would govern well, as, in what experience does he draw on for that?

Let's continue to love Fred on TV and radio, and let people who have new ideas run the country.

Hey Matt & Mr(s) Anonymous

Substitue Fred Thompson for John McCain...compare the two...
It is a Liberal watchdog org. so the more pts. they score for a Senator the more Lib they are.

For Instance, McKainnedy scored 2 points MORE than Thompson on "immigration".

Todays announcement
by McCain is an effort to get as much support as possible BEFORE Fred Thompson announces. Then maybe he can 'barter' with Fred for a Sec.Def. job or something because thats as close to the top he is ever gonna get.
sans pareil writes: Wednesday, April, 25, 2007 6:12 PM
McCain is right about what again?

So the anonymous one says Thompson hasn't been right about anything?

Lets start with the ILLEGAL immigration and work our way up shall we?

And the BIG one Thompson was wrong about, was McCain's OWN (kinda) LAW... At least Fred has admitted that vote was an error...

Has McCain apologized for Co-Sponsoring THAT bill!!

Your e-mailer got one thing right
There's absolutely no comparison between Thompson and McCain. Republicans might be able to be convinced to vote for Fred Thompson. John McCain has as much chance of being elected President as I do.

An anonymous blog poster agrees with you
Aside from not being that experienced or electible, he's also not that conservative, IMO. At least no more so than McCain. So that two anonymous people in your corner, the train is rolling!

In other words Matt,
An anonymous e-mailer agrees with you. Pretty lame.
