"The ISG Speaks Not For Me," Or, "It's The Mullahs, Stupid"
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 7:32 AM

The almost instant reject of the central recommendations of the ISG Report by key officials in Iraq and Israel, and serious observers of the war is a refreshing bit of resolve.  The criticism is withering and deserved. "A fatuous process yields, necessarily, fatuous results," writes Eliot Cohen in today's Wall Street Journal, a piece I hope the editors make available to the public generally.  He continues:

War, and warlike statecraft, is a hard business, and though this is supposed to be a report dominated by "realists," there is nothing realistic in failing to spell out the bloody deeds, grim probabilities and dismal consequences associated with even the best course of action. Indeed, some parts of the report read as sheer fantasy -- Recommendation 15, for example, which provides that part of the American deal with Syria should include the latter's full cooperation in investigating the Hariri assassination, verifiable cessation of Syrian aid to Hezbollah, and its support for persuading Hamas to recognize Israel.

"All conducted under the watchful eyes of Unicorns," Lileks adds in reviewing the ISG's many pronouncements on what needs to happen.

Cohen and James are hardly alone in condemning the report as a massive bit of unintentional parody.  Watching the replay of the ISG's press conference last night, with solemn pronouncement after solemn pronouncement from somnambulist after somnambulist, I was struck by how absolutely feckless this entire exercise was.  Because the ISG was not serious about the nature of the double-headed enemy --al Qaeda-allied jihadists and the Iranian mullah-led Shia radicals and their Syrian thugocrats-- it could not be serious about the way forward.

Now comes Israel's newest cabinet minister, Avigdor Lieberman, whose portfolio is strategic affairs and includes Iran.  He is visiting the U.S.  From the New York Times today:

In an interview on the eve of his trip, he said, “Our first task is to convince Western countries to adopt a tough approach to the Iranian problem,” which he called “the biggest threat facing the Jewish people since the Second World War.”

He added, “We must also be prepared to deal alone with this problem.”

For now, Israel’s policy is to remain relatively low-key and to work with the United States and Europe in search of a way to halt or contain Iran’s nuclear program. Mr. Lieberman says he supports this position, while making clear he has no faith in the diplomatic efforts.

“The dialogue with Iran will be a 100-percent failure, just like it was with North Korea,” said Mr. Lieberman, who came here from the Soviet Union in 1978, was first elected to Parliament in 1999 and served in the cabinet of the former prime minister, Ariel Sharon.

"A Perfect Failure" is, coincidentally (or not, in some feverish circles), how Bill Kristol and Bob Kagan describe the report, but that is agenerous description.  At a time of extraordinary danger, and not just to the democratic government of Lebanon and Israel, but to the United States, 10 of its aging elite sign on to an invitation to return to the holiday from history we took in the '90s.  "The report doesn't offer a plan," Ralph Peters notes, "but a muddle of truisms and truly bad ideas."

"The nation's capital hasn't seen such concentrated wisdom in one place since Paris Hilton dined alone at the Hooters on Connecticut Avenue," adds John Podhoretz.

Retired Senator Alan Simpson predicted the ISG would be attacked by the far left and the far right.  He was quite wrong.  The ISG Report has been embraced by Nancy Pelosi and Jack Cafferty and the political and media know-nothings they represent, and scorned by the people serious about the nature of the enemy.

Victor Davis Hanson and Christopher Hitchens share very little in common except an understanding of the enemy.  They are neither far right nor far left.  They are far-sighted on the war and the consequences of defeat, and their scorn for the ISG Report is complete.

So into the vertical file with this enormous waste of time and media attention, and await the Pentagon's strategic review of Iraq.  It would be very useful for the president to make a speech warning Syria that it will not be allowed to re-annex Lebanon, and Iran that its provocations in Iraq are being noted and totalled.  Book mark RegimeChangeIran and CounterTerrorismBlog, and wait for the State of the Union.  The appeasement caucus has had its day and its appeal has failed to persuade anyone who was not already signed on to the concept of retreat.  The braying of the Beltway-Manhattan media elite has persuaded everyone trapped in its extended Green Room that President Bush is on the verge of a "180."

I don't think so.

Waste of Paper
Was a dime of taxpayer money wasted on this worthless wad of paper that was apparently thrown together by washed-up, has-beens?

The New York Times costs a dollar - you could have cut and pasted their boneheaded editorials together and came up with the same result.

Bush' s 180
I do not think President Bush has enough gravitas left to "tell" Syria anything. By kowtowing to the newly elected Democrat majority and giving them the heads of Bolton and Rumsfield, he no longer has the moral authority to tell anybody any thing. He has been efectevly nuetered. As is the norm since the 60s, the American Military has been scrificed on the alter of "peace at any cost". I feel ashamed of my country's "leadership".

What a plan
These bigwigs go into a room to come up with a plan, and they come out with: Just get everyone to kiss and make up. If anyone objects, give them something that belongs to someone else.
My mind is blown.

"Elder Statesmen"
It is time to throw anyone over the age of 60 out of office, or to allow them to be on any kind of anything that has to do with running this Country. The egos have overtaken the whole process. Out on their ears, I say.

Buying Time
The realists as they are called by the drive-by media have been in the Green room for five years waiting to grab the "lime light" to kick the door open to de-escalate the Iraq conflict and return to "business as usual". "Can we not all get along?" as once mentioned on the streets of LA after a near insurrection. The only good result of the report is to give the President time to digest the Joint Chief's staff report on the real options and implementation time line. The ISG report is a pretext for all the professional naysayers to hide behind for the sake of a patriotic facade. There is no end game with "honor" spelled VICTORY in the report, but it allowed for "debate" of increased troop strength and focus on training. The end game is training them, and not be there forever.

Untfortunate, but true
I agree wholeheartedly with Jim.

A STUDY GROUP, OK...FOR COLLEGE PAPER
Well, well. What can you say?

This study group is nothing but a college level study group done at the last minute before the deadline.

For people, especially the media to pay great attention to this is just sickening.

Even a well thoughtful high school student understands what that needs to be done in Iraq: secure the border and impose a quasi-dictatorial regime that can put law enforcement to work for a while.

You cannot impose a democracy on a fragile, sectarian country which is also filled with ill-intention people, and harrassed by dangerous neighbors. As simple as that.

And do you need lawyers to write this report? Heck, this is nothing but a stunt.

Prepare for the lights to go out
If Israel adopts as policy Lieberman's statement,
"be prepared to deal alone with this problem", it will be bad news for the US in the region.

The US will have less influence and coordination with Israel, receiving less of the key intelligence and foresight upon which we depend for finding our way around and understanding what's happening. As bad as our intelligence is, it will be worse if Israel takes the necessary steps to "deal alone with this problem".

ISG Report gains credibility, momentum..
...judging by Hugh's post alone. He has here referenced every right-wing viewpoint (well, not every, more to come, no doubt) with name recognition to attack the gray-hair's effort to point out a few truths about Iraq. Even Ralph Peters, who would kill his own family if they got in the way of "victory in Iraq." So, there's hope! Talk it all out, Americans; my faith is in you.

79 recommendations ..
As I understand one of the 79 recommendations put forth was for the US to solve the Israeli / Palestine issue. Well Ok, let's put that one at the top of the list. I figure we can have that one taken care of by about the time Jesus comes back.

Study Group Gets F for Failure
It doesn't bring us together, It won't make the war go better. This usless committee makes our govenment look weak and confused to our friends and enemies. This is a very dangerous situation caused by excessive egos and WMD'S ( WORTHLESS MEAN DEMOCRATS).
MrShankly writes: Thursday, December, 07, 2006 9:47 PM
The report was reasonable and tough
Why do I say the report is tough? Because sometimes doing what's right and realistic is the toughest thing to do. It's easy to do the John Wayne pose and play the tough guy cowboy. But, it takes a real man to talk with Iran, Syria and the other players in the region. Regardless of this report though none of the "Let's get tough crowd" you mentioned would take any responsibility if we followed everyone of their suggestions and the situation got worse. Why? 21st century Republicans don't believe in responsibility or accountability. If Ike Eisenhower were here I know what he'd say "Seems reasonable and fair, let's implement it."

And so we continue....
.....with the disasterous thinking that got us into this mess in the first place. I'm not saying I agree with everything in the ISG Report. But to dismiss it as "not serious" just because you disagree with it is exactly the kind of myopic thinking that led us into this unnecessary war. I particularly enjoyed all of the Pearl Harbor references yesterday. So, you're saying, when we were attacked by Japan, we should have responded by going to war with Fiji?

Look up, neocons. Iraq is a lost cause. It is no disgrace to the American military, who carried out their jobs with bravery and excellence, that the Iraqis are at war with each other. This unintended consequence was obvious to anyone with half a brain before we started this war. Better to regroup and fight the radical Islamists in ways we can actually win.
