Michelle Obama's address to the DNC's Gay & Lesbian Leadership Council
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 4:14 AM
UPDATE:  Michelle Obama's speech last week was a completely candid and heartfelt declaration of Barack Obama true feelings on the subject of same sex marriage: He's for it.  He is for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and against the California Marriage Amendment which would reverse the ruling of the California Supreme Court of last month and restore the definition of marriage limiting the institution to one man and one woman.

Now this is a clear and significant divide between the two candidates, and not just on the issue of marriage, but also on the role of the courts.  If Obama is elected and he leads majorities in the House and Senate to repeal DOMA, eight judges in two states --California and Massachusetts-- will have reversed 3,000 years of law and culture in the West.

This is one more reason why it is quite obvious that Barack Obama is the most radical presidential nominee of a major party in American history.  I hope the McCain campaign and 527s simply put the facts before voters on this issue and do not allow the scorn of cultural elites who see no downside to such judicial imperialism mandating such radical changes deter them from publicizing the simple fact, attested to by Michelle Obama with perfect clarity, that Obama supports the imposition of same sex marriage from coast-to-coast.

The audio:

From the DNC's GLLC dinner in New York, Thursday, 6/26/08:

Michelle Obama - 1

Five years ago today, the Supreme Court delivered justice with the decision in Lawrence V. Texas. That case stated that same sex couples would never again be persecuted through the use of criminal law. And on Saturday, we recognized the anniversary of the day people stood up at Stonewall and said enough. These anniversaries remind us that no matter who we are or where we come from or what we look like, we are only here because of the brave efforts of those who came before us, that we are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall in a pursuit of that more perfect union. That is the promise of this country.

Michelle Obama - 2

Because Barack is not new to the cause of the LGBT community. It has been a conviction of his career since he was first elected to public office. In his first year in the Illinois State Senate, Barack co-sponsored a bill amending the Illinois Human Rights Act to include protections of LGBT men and women. He worked on that bill for seven years, serving as the chief co-sponsor, and lobbying his colleagues to reject the political expedience of homophobia, and make LGBT equality a priority in our state.

Michelle Obama - 3

He's led on gender-based violence with his work on the Illinois gender violence act, successfully reaching across the aisle to put in place the nation's strongest law, giving the survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence legal remedy against their attacker. He joined his colleagues in fighting to include explicit protections for the LGBT community in that act. He lost that battle, but his efforts brought gender violence in the LGBT community into the political consciousness like never before.

Michelle Obama - 4

In 2004, after hearing from gay friends and supporters about the hurtful impact of DOMA, Barack went on record during his U.S. Senate race calling for its complete repeal. And as a U.S. Senator, he voted to protect our Constitution from the stain of discrimination by voting against the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Michelle Obama - 5

Barack's record is clear. There is so much at stake in this election. The direction of our country hangs in the balance. And we face two clear choices in this race, sort of like what he faced in that church basement. We face the choice between the world as it is, and the world as it should be. And we have to ask ourselves in this election, are we willing to settle for the world as it is? Or are we willing to work for the world as it should be? And despite the extraordinary challenges we face today, we have one candidate who believes that the country is moving in the right direction, despite the inequalities created over eight years. And then there's Barack Obama, the other guy. Barack believes that we must fight for the world as it should be, a world where together, we work to reverse discriminatory laws like DOMA and Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Michelle Obama - 6

And that's why he opposes all divisive and discriminatory constitutional amendments, whether it's a proposed amendment to the California and Florida constitutions, or the U.S. Constitution, because the world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds.

Michelle Obama - 7

It's not just about positions that you take. It's also about the leadership that you provide on these issues. Barack has the courage to talk to skeptical audiences, not just friendly ones. That's why he told a crowd at a rally in Texas that gays and lesbians deserve equality. And you can imagine in Texas that that crowd got a little quiet. But Barack said, and I quote now, he said, "I'm A Christian, and I praise Jesus every Sunday." And then the crowd starting cheering. And then he said, "I hear people saying things that I don't think are very Christian with respect to people who are gay and lesbian." And you know what? When he said that, the crowd kept cheering. That's why he told Evangelicals at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church that we need a renewed call to action on HIV and AIDS. That's why he went to Ebeneezer Baptist Church, and he said that we need to get over homophobia in the African-American community, that if we're honest with ourselves, we'll embrace our gay brothers and sisters instead of scorning them. And that's why he stood up in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention, and he told all of America that we refuse to be divided anymore. That's the choice in this election.
From the fact-checking department, here is the video of Barack Obama in Beaumont, Texas, in March of this year, speaking to supporters at a rally, as cited by Michelle Obama.

A few comments
Michelle said: "These anniversaries remind us that no matter who we are or where we come from or what we look like, we are only here because of the brave efforts of those who came before us...."

No, Michelle, we are only here because a man and a woman decided to come together and create us. That came long, long before Selma and Stonewall.

Besides, marriage as it has been for thousands of years enables children to benefit from being raised and taught and influenced by the attributes and characteristics of two different genders. It is the strength of diversity (a man and a woman) focused on a single goal of the wellbeing of that child. Doesn't Michelle believe in diversity, and the strength of diversity for our children? Doesn't Michelle care about our children?

All gays and lesbians, so called, are deserving of our respect and kindness. There should be no hate. But Michelle isn’t really interesting in getting rid of hate, because she won’t be able to show how noble she is for standing up against hate. She wants to stand up against hate so much that she sees hate where it doesn’t’ even exist. She creates hate to oppose it.

(BTW, did you ever read the gay and lesbian web sites to see the language they use against James Dobson or Gordon B. Hinckley? It isn’t exactly gracious adulation.)

So, Michelle can say what she wants but I am going to always vote to keep marriage what it has been for thousands of years. I can not support some social experiment on the most basic unit of society without a rigorous and comprehensive family environmental impact study.

The left demands that we do impact studies to build one road through a forests, to preserve the delicate ecosystem. Why are they so reckless with the most important ecosystem of the family? Why would they risk damaging that ecosystem without even 1 year of an impact study? The left these days are reckless with our foundational things.

More radical than Wilson?
Hugh keeps saying that Obama is the most radical nominee in American history.

How does Obama compare to President "living Constitution" "Founders, schmounders" Woodrow Wilson? Is Obama going to be worse than that?

Real question meant in good faith. Responses appreciated.

Thanks for the challenge. Hopefully you are a serious seeker of information on Obama, and will take time to "google" Saul Alinsky's books (such as "Reveille for Radicals") and just read the content on the covers. You get a sense of how radical Barack Obama is. He was the feet and hands of Alinsky's radical ideas, in Chicago. He received $25,000 to go and organize communities there.
I look forward to a later discussion after you gather information.

Two Quick Responses...
1) Michelle Obama's storytelling leaves me with a taste of "point-shaving." What she says is not alltogether false, but it certainly isn't true!! The result is that after a short period of time, an aggregate diversion form the truth emerges. yucky!

2) Shakespeare wrote, 'a rose is a rose, call it something else would it not smell as sweet?...' Gays think that gay marriage is the same as (hetro)marriage; rose - rose. But it is not.
It is a daisy. Still a perfectly lovely flower, but not a rose.
I don't think anyone has objections to committed unions between gay people. Nor do they have objections to gays leaving each other their assets in death, paying joint income tax, living together, or all the rest. But it's not marriage.
It's like saying a Prada purse IS a Channel purse - preposterous!

Obama waxes religious
but he does not know the Sermon on the Mount though he pretends to. Watch the video .... (Add that to the ever lengthening Gaffe List).

And another thing--he accuses those who are against special rights for homosexuals as not being Christian.

Am I the only one who finds this guy arrogant AND ignorant?

..someone wrested the definition of what it means to be a Christian from these Boomer Christianists. And it is high time that someone told these Christianists to bring their policy prescriptions into rational space, that self-insistence--however masquerading as "faith"--does not belong in the public square.

No faith in the public square?
Patriotic Liberal writes said: "self-insistence--however masquerading as 'faith'--does not belong in the public square."

Is it not written somewhere:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

No faith in politics?
Patriotic Liberal writes said: "And it is high time that someone told these Christianists to bring their policy prescriptions into rational space."

I don't think you get to define "rational space."

No religious test includes all religion and no religion.

"No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

In the end, a little humility is required for democracy to work. That includes all of us, not just "religionists" because none of us is as smart as all of us.

...grass, aren't you, son?

Let's let Christ define a Christian:

Matt. 22: 37 (KJV)
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Any Christian worthy of the name is committed to living a life of sexual purity, ie. a heterosexual relationship exclusively within the bonds of marriage.

The Obamas are free to promote whatever sexual liasons they choose, but don't call sex other than within a marriage between a man and a woman Christian.

It's the Obamas and other supporters of same-sex marriage who need to make the case to the American people that traditional marriage needs to be changed "in the public square." So far, the majority of the American people remain unconvinced.

Christians are willing to give gay couples equal rights; they are unwilling to call it "marriage," which, of course, is what the gay community wants.

Gay supporters want not only equal rights but equal social acceptance. Social acceptance is something true Christians cannot concede.

Same-sex relationships break the commandments of Christ and His Father. Barack is using the Sermon on the Mount to say if we love our neighbor as ourself we must support gay marriage.

Uh, I believe Christ said something about using the scripture deceitfully in order to teach the doctrines of men.

It wasn't meant as a challenge, and I am aware that Obama is a numbnutzicrat of high order.

President Wilson jailed people who spoke ill of him or his policies. He sponsored a hundreds of thousands strong spy on your neighbors corps. He ridiculed the Declaration and the Constitution. He idolized Mussolini and the Fascists. He trained the men who foisted the New Deal upon us.

My question is not whether Obama is a radical. It is not whether Obama's probable policies -- based on his stated and voted for positions before he began his dissembling run for the Presidency -- will be bad for the country. He is a radical, and his policies will be very damaging to individual liberty and, thus, to the USA.

My question is by what measure does Obama eclipse Woodrow Wilson in his radicalism?

If you take the Bible as a whole, the definition emerges, beginning with Genesis 1:27-28: the creation of a man and a woman in the image of God. Of course, the first commandment was to "Be fruitful and multiply."

The Bible speaks of "husbands and wives." Multiple wives were permitted by God, but not men married to men or women married to women.

Sex outside marriage is always forbidden throughout the Bible.

At issue on this thread is the Obamas using Christianity into guilting people into accepting same-sex marriage. Michelle said: "...that if we're honest with ourselves, we'll embrace our gay brothers and sisters instead of scorning them."

A very sly argument intended to heap scorn on those who desire to retain the traditional definition of marriage.

After all , Wright and all those lefty so called Christians don't have a high regard for the problem of sin unless it is about recycling! So, now he goes for the middle, the right of center Christian who his Party and the Olympian nonsence speaker, Patriot Liberal thinks is just Boomer types, have dissed for generations. Now they need those votes. Just like they need black, Hispanic, gay and other minority votes. Then after election, well, none of those types get anything but a 'bump' until the next election. And if Pubs and people who are conservative, don't think that this Messiah naif will change our entire society by having all Courts looking like the 9th Circuit, I have some land in Fla. to sell them. Stop the nonsence about Barr and realize that this Messiah and his Party of socialist pacifists would change our entire culture. This is not up for debate. ...Obama is throwing Levitcus under the bus and exalting the Sermon on the Mount--after interpreting Christ's words to fit his political agenda. Just like Dems=Good and Pubs=Bad, Leviticus = hateful scorn and the Sermon = loving embrace of gay unions.

This issue is germaine to the election since it is assumed that "young Christians" who do not know the Bible will fall for the Obamas' scam.

I expect an Obama ad any day pronouncing him a "Christian leader." And the Christian youth vote will self-righteously embrace the liberation theology social gospel in favor of the real/deal gospel of commandment keeping.

Obama claims to be a Christian, yet argued for allowing born-alive-aborted-babies to die on a gurney. Doing something to save them, like feeding them, would as he explained it, interfere with abortion rights laws by admitted the "fetus" is a "person" worthy of constitutional protection.

Let this guy be the uber-left candidate, but to use the Bible to support his immoral policies is beyong the pale.

Hey Michelle, this is courage
If Barack Obama addressed a Gay PRIDE rally and told the audience that they must stop practicing their high-risk sexual behaviors in order to prevent the spread of HIV, THAT would be courageous and an example of true leadership. What was it that Mrs. Obama said, he was courageous in speaking to "skpetical crowds" not just friendly ones? Well Senator, why don't you take your wife at her word and challenge this lobby sometime, publicly, and we will then see how "friendly" the crowd still is to you. That is change I can believe in.

Hey, Darth
Excellent point!

Even in Obama's famous Father's Day sermon, he couldn't just exhort fathers to step up and do their duty. He received applause when he ended with the need for "government to meet fathers half way."

Yikes! The courageous thing would have been to say to fathers: Step up, God wants you to do your duty to your children--and don't expect "government" (taxpayers) to carry half the load.

Obama is a big whimp terrified of saying anything objectionable to any kind of crowd, much less a skeptical or (heaven forbid) hostile one.
