Cindy McCain's Opening Salvo (& Why It Gives Us Hope)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:40 PM

As MKH noted, Cindy McCain got some mileage out of Michelle Obama's gaffe today, saying:

“I am proud of my country. I don’t know about you? If you heard those words earlier, I am very proud of my country,” Mrs. McCain said while revving up the crowd and introducing her husband.
Say what you will about this being a Democratic year, but I believe both Democrats (and their spouses) are prone to gaffes.  And you never know which of these minor gaffes could become huge ones which become a media narrative (think Teresa Heinz Kerry telling a reporter to "shove it," John Kerry's getting Lambeau Field wrong, or even Kerry's fondness of wind surfing).

(Bill Clinton, alone, has already made several of these gaffes ...)

What is more, as Cindy McCain's remarks demonstrate, the McCain campaign is ready to go on the attack -- and are, in fact, already beginning to define Obama as a weak-kneed liberal Democrat -- even before the General Election campaign begins.

Keep in mind, this Obama hasn't really ever taken a real punch (sure, Hillary has slapped him a few times on style, but what I mean is a real-life substantive punch).  It's hard to judge how well a candidate will do until he gets into a real contest.  Heck, even Mike Dukakis looked pretty great until the summer of '88.  The test of a candidate is how they stand up under scrutiny.  Don't be so sure that Obama will look so good once the American public knows everything about his positions.

Cindy McCain's comments, of course, could not really have been effectively leveled by Hillary Clinton (because she and Obama agree on ideology).  While Hillary, no doubt, would argue that she was very proud of the 1990s -- she isn't likely to criticize someone for not being a "proud American."  That is essentially a General Election fight -- one that works well coming from a former P.O.W. (or his wife) -- and also a fight in which the Democrats almost always lose (because it shows they are out-of-touch with most patriotic Americans).

For this reason, McCain will have a much easier time favorably contrasting himself to Obama than Hillary has.  If the only difference is who is more charismatic, Obama always wins.  But when real philosophical differences emerge -- as they always do in  General Elections -- I think the country is with us on most of the big questions.

The bottom line is, unlike Hillary, McCain can make this race about more than just who the best speaker is ...

It's going to be so sweet to take back the country and the constitution from your boy "W" and the rest of the GOP. Those that are not in jail or heading to jail can fight it out for talking head spots on FOX. You have so many Reps and senators resigning for "family" reasons, its' truly pathetic. Fact is, most of them are going to lobby firms to try and cash in on their former positions as elected officials. Problem with that is there wont be any "decision makers" that happen to be repulican to scam. They would be in jail.
By the way, Cindy Mcain should just shut up and look pretty like she always does. Stealing RX narcotics from her place of work, that's just dandy. THere is an old saying....... dont get high on your own supply.

Cindy Lou boo-hoo!
And one of McCain's biggest assets, according to most of these people is that he eschews negative campaigning.

There is a good reason for that though. It's a tale that involves organized crime, corruption and murder. Let's say that John McCain never runs a negative ad against his opponents because he doesn't want them to dig too hard.

It's because McCain is where he is because of his marriage to his second wife, Cindy. No, Cindy Hensley McCain is not where the story begins. She was a young 25 when McCain married her (he was 43). According to the Arizona Republic on June 5, 1999, McCain joked that his marriage was based on a 'tissue of lies.' Both he and she had lied to each other, she claiming to be older than she was and he claiming to be younger. Yeah, I know-- what a good foundation for a marriage to start off on. To their credit the McCains however have stayed together. Or maybe there are other reasons...

One wonders what Cindy told McCain about her father. When did McCain learn how his father-in-law Jim Hensley made his fortune? Sooner or later he had to be dealt in on the 'family jewels.' After all, they helped finance a run for Congress and not long after that for the Senate.

There has always been struggle between different ideologies. Our country has come a long way... so please don't hold all past sins against us. History has already shown that socialist/communist thought is an enemy of freedom. McCain has been a border state Senator for many years. Illegals have been crossing into his state for many years. McCain has read the reports for many years. Prayer rugs have been found in the trash that illegals leave behind in the desert for many years. Prayer rugs have been used by terrorists to practice their religion for many years.

And now you think he will secure the border???

Two words for Cindy in regards to candidacy-ending gaffes:

Stolen painkillers.

Shall I elaborate? Cindy's addiction to painkillers led her to steal them from employees. This is not the kind of thing we especially look for in our first ladies, now is it? Nor is the fact that she's the trophy wife of the premier mean and nasty hot head who dumped his long suffering wife for a barbie doll. And yet, the more evolved among us can excuse her digressions and personal demons - unless, of course, she chooses to be sanctimonious and point fingers elsewhere, which I might add, seems a particularly odious trait of the GOPers in recent history.

Not to fear, Cindy and John will get theirs - even if Ari Fleisher does have a quarter billion dollars ready to slime the Dem contender.

If any of you McCain supporters are really Republicans explain how Amnesty for 12 to 20 million illegal invaders will benefit the Republican party?

When these 20 million POOR invaders get the right to vote, they will vote 80 to 90% for Democrats who will promise them FREE welfare, healthcare, etc.

Kiss goodbye to ever seeing a Republican President or Republican majority in Congress ever again in your LIFETIME.

If McCain does not sign a pledge against Amnesty, he will sign an Amnesty bill ASAP after claiming the border is secure.

So why would any sane Republican vote for McCain?

Maybe Michelle Obama meant what she said. Maybe she mis-spoke. However, she is not running for President.

I think the best thing for candidate's wives (or husbands) to do is to be seen and not heard. Of course Laura Bush, for example, is a strong woman. But, at least in public, she very seldom pushes herself forward.

Hopefully Michelle's gaffe is a one-time thing. If so, I'm more than willing to give her a pass. I'm not voting for Obama, anyway, but that's because I disagree with him on the issues. He has a very liberal voting record.

I think when you vote for a candidate, their stance on the issues and their general character should count a lot more than whether or not their spouse occasionally gets foot-in-mouth disease or is easy on the eyes.

Beside B. Hussein being the most predictably liberal vote in the US Senate (now there's a unifier, huh), allow me to disabuse you of your misinformation with only one very important American issues.

1. B. Hussein's repeated support to continue Partial Birth Abortion. (Michelle Obama supports it as a 'legitimate medical procedure.' Another example of the liability that is Michelle Obama) Hmm, apparently they havn't read or seen what PBA actually is. Most Americans are aghast at this 'legitimate medical procedure.'

This is not even a pro-abortion/pro-life issue as most Libs will try to make it. This is a procedure that would have made Joseph Mengele proud. Given Hillary's support of PBA, there is no surprise it has been a non-issue in the primaries. I assure you the Repubs will make B. Hussein's voting record on PBA and other extremely liberal positions very 'public knowledge' come the general election season. (Can you say 527 groups?) The graphic depictions/descriptions of this 'legitimate medical procedure' are going to turn which red state blue? With overwhelming public support of a ban on PBA, even within Democrat circles, you better believe this will be a major issue that is plastered to B. Hussein.

Your fantasy world is about to come crashing down around you and B. Hussein. I hope you are wearing a helmet, and not a tinfoil hat.

in the general. What states will go blue for his rheteric? It's amazing to me that people think Obama can fake it into the general election. Right now, democrats are courting a candidate so it's easy for them to over look Obama's empty speeches because he is likable. In a general election, voters begin to take a deeper look at what the person believes and what the person has done in the past to demonstrate their ability to be commander in chief. At this point, McCain wins! The first lady factor will play a big role in this election because the difference between Cindy and Michelle is unmistakable!

When asked at a media availability afterward if they were responding to Michelle Obama’s comments Monday that this election is the “first time” she was “really proud” of her country

“I just wanted to make the statement that I have and always will be proud of my country,” McCain said

Sen McCain then deferred to his wife, who repeated her previous words

First ladies are annoying
I know this makes me sound mean but first ladies are as annoying as first husbands. Laura Bush was probably the best first lady. She had her causes, but never went on direct attacks.

So what if Michelle Obama is a traitor to her country or Theresa Kerry was a mental patient. The worst mistake they made is by exposing themselves as more than just lucky enough to be married to a guy running for president and hopefully the candidate was lucky enough to pick a supportive wife.

What I like most about Michelle Obama is the same as I like about Laura Bush. They both had a life before they got maarried and have stayed true to their causes while being married.

I think the presidential spousal experiments should have begun and ended with Hillary Clinton before descending into the Heinz Kerry quagmire.

From the article: "Cindy McCain's attack, of course, could not really have been made by Hillary, because she and Obama agree on ideology"

I fail to see why Mrs. Clinton could not level the same attack. I don't think she agrees with Sen Obama's ideology of America loathing.
That said, Sen Clinton herself can't be the one to bring it up, only because she should not fall into the trap of discourse with a first-lady wannabe. As the presidential candidate she should only wrangle with her peer, but there's no reason why her campaign or her spouse could not sieze on this. Probably should.
