The Reaction To Huckabee

from my audience on air and in e-mail is not good at all. The neo-Willie Horton case isn't the problem, but the answers on illegals who turn 18 are being very poorly received, as is the governor's endorsement of an anti-federalist one-size-fits-all-states workplace smoking ban.
The transcript is here. Here's the exchange on smoking:
HH: And the last question is do you support a federal ban on smoking as has been alleged?
MH: No, I don’t. I support workplace clean air. But a federal ban on smoking would mean that you couldn’t smoke in your own home. I don’t care what people do in their home. But in a workplace, in our state, we passed a law which I’m very proud of, and that said that people have a right to have clean air at the workplace. I did not support a ban just in restaurants and bars because frankly, I think that the problem with that is that you’re punishing the customers. But what you have a right to do is to protect the workers in the same was you do from radon gas and a host of other carcinogens and toxic fumes, which is exactly what tobacco smoke is.
HH: Well, I understand that from the state side, but I’m talking about the federal lawmakers getting involved in this and imposing on states a uniform standard. Do you…just for the workplace. Do you support federal laws mandating standards for workplace non-smoke environments?
MH: I personally would on the workplace issue. If there are two or more people, and as long as anyone under the age of 21 worked in that place, there ought to be some protections for them.

SteveL "You just stated perfectly why Rudy is the right man to run against Hillary. He'll be someone in clear contrast to her vascillating and pandering for votes. You've also indicated why Romney is exactly the wrong type person to run against her. He'll be unable to exploit her greatest weakness because he himself could be called a vascillator."
Bingo! I've been making that same point on other discussions here on townhall.com too.
The only other candidates whose steadfastness would sharply contrast with Hillary are Ron Paul (but he's unacceptable to me for other reasons), and Fred Thompson (who COULD have been a good candidate, except he's running the most BIZARRE campaign I've seen in years).

It's not just "mind your own business" when my own fresh air is at stake at work. If you want to smoke tobacco (or otherwise) keep it to yourself... don't exhale.
Many states and localities already ban smoking IN THE WORKPLACE (see Wikipedia at http://tinyurl.com/2evsr3). At this rate, whether Huckabee endorses a federal ban soon won't matter one way or the other...
Having such a ban is smart conservative policy on two principles:
1) It conserves life by protecting non-smokers from unfiltered carcinogens invading their airspace.
2) It conserves money by reducing the health care costs spent on smoking-related diseases.
If folks listened to Huckabee's interview on Charlie Rose on 11/1, they'd realize he is adamantly OPPOSED to federalizing education and health care. |

laborlawyer writes: "Do any of you really know what either Giuliani or Romney would be like as Republican nominees and/or as President?"
Giuliani has NOT changed his basic philosophy. As far back as I can remember, Giuliani has been a social moderate, an economic conservative who favors private enterprise, ferocious against crime and terrorism and the race hustling of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and a strong supporter of Israel. You can check his record as mayor of New York and you will see that is how he governed (although occasionally he had to compromise, just as any other politician including Reagan did).
I fully expect that's how he would govern as President too.
Unlike Romney, Rudy has NOT had one of these epiphanies where he suddenly announces that he's had a revelation and he's switching his basic philosophy. When Rudy spoke before the Values Voters Summit, he could have acted like Romney and said "I've thought it over and you're right, Roe v. Wade should be overturned." He didn't. Instead, he asked the audience to accept his beliefs, honestly stated, for what they were.
What a refreshing change that is from Romney's multiple epiphanies (always conveniently occurring just before his next political campaign), and from Hillary's shamelessly taking multiple positions on every issue to appeal to the widest audience.
GO RUDY!!!

Tom Coburn. Maybe John McCain if he changed part of his stance on illegals in our midst.

At 51? Gee, I know the hippies used to say "don't trust anyone over 30". I guess I should just grab my cane and hobble off into the sunset, eh?:)
btw I don't "ignore" anything and I'm not for "appeasing" anyone. I am for a smart strategy that will approach each threat intelligently. The threat posed by Iran is NOT the same as that posed by the Sunni terrorists; Iran is a sovereign nation which acts in its own self interest and is not part of the "death cult" Al Quada represents.
2007 is not 1937. Iranian troops aren't marching through the Arabic Sudetenland conquering everything in sight. Yes it has an army, but the last time it was used was in Iraq almost 20 years ago. The Iranian theocracy resembles the Soviet Union under Gromyko more than the Nazis under Hitler; it is an aging and unpopular beaurocracy kept in power through exploitation of anti-American and anti-semetic rhetoric. We should be pushing at its' pillars to expedite its' inevitable crumblng from within. Of course, we must always be ready to respond with military force should it ever actually move against us or our allies, but as a last resort. One would have thught this Iraq misadventure wouldhave taught you the dangers of doing otherwise. |

Who said that conservatives could not be compassionate? The terms are completely synonymous. It puts the balance on the right side of life. Conservative does not solely apply to economic issues. Even if it did, compassion in a candidate would boost an economy. It may not make sense in terms of financial philosophy that maps out financial security, but, neither did dying on a cross make sense to saving a world of lost sinners.
I Heart Huckabee should be turned around and the question should be asked, "What's in the heart of the man?". Isn't that what really should decide our votes? Maybe that's just a little too old-fashioned, too conservative?
The road is as important as the destination. If we can still maintain compassion for the immigrant who is downcast, while preventing infiltration of dangerous factions, we make America stronger and our enemies more envious. Nothing wrong with that. Who knows? Even the heart of the enemy might be reached when real compassion is demonstrated and our threat will be diminished without raising our fully loaded arms.

Assuming the statistics you give about a reduction in border crossing are correct, that is still too little too late. Looking at dubya's administration from beginning to present, his record on protecting the border, and especially workplace enforcements (which at a certain point it seems he tried to stop altogether) have made him the worst ever on the issue. I would go further to say that at this point I would consider him to probably be the worst Republican President ever. |
|
Blow-Rob wrote; ------------------ Hitler had one of the largest, best trained armies on Earth. He had an ultra-modern industrialized nation at his fingertips...THAT is a large part of the reason no one challenged him: he was, or appeared to be at that time, to well-manned and well-armed to tangle with." -------------------
Blow-Rob, Iran has one of the largest reserves of soldiers of any nation on the planet---don't you KNOW that ?! You're more ignorant than I realized.
Additionally, symmetrical warfare is no longer the only focus; we must be equally on alert of asymmetrical tactics practiced by Islamo-facists. Nuclear weapons are the great equalizer. Do you even know the effects of WMD ?
Blow-Rob, by mentioning the awesome power of the Nazi forces, you do seem to be making Reagan's point about peace thru strength. It's the same reason WE advocate for the USA having the best military in the world---nobody will want to tangle with us.
I will also infer from your answer that you believe a reason the Euros appeased Hitler is because they feared Hitler. It's the same reason you lefties don't want to fight Islamo-fascists---you fear them.
And you're right, the Nazi army was lethal---all the more reason to fight against them. After all, is your life not worth fighting for ? Had the Euros mobilized, they could have saved millions of lives. And had the USA not been afflicted by 'isolationism' prior to December 1941, we could have helped nip Hitler in the bud.
Ultimately, Blow-Rob, the European strategy of appeasing Hitler failed miserably...that is, unless you're one of those people who thinks the Jews had it coming.
And appeasing the Islamo-fascists will not turn out any differently. |

Anyone who checks the record will see that Romney governed as a conservative as much as he could in a state with an 85% Democratic legislature. Google "An Open Letter Regarding Governor Mitt Romney" for a true assessment by Massachusetts leaders.
Irrepsective of how you come down on the social issues, there is little argument that Romney knows how to run a business. He will cut spending, reduce government bureaucracy, and streamline the federal government. We need that change right now. He will encourage technology and education, and prepare us to compete against China. He has proven -- more so than any other candidate -- that he is up to the challenge. |
|
Huckabee/Paul '08 (Get your stickers now!)
Paul's got great ideas but the status quo is too entrenched for him to actually see much of them come to light (like bringing ALL the troops home from ALL the bases to protect the homeland). But the VP slot would be a great place to have his influence. |
|
is someone whose positions I don't totally agree with, to be sure (like being soft on illegals, because he wanted children of same to be eligible for in-state tuition rates in Arkansas, which at least ain't free). But at least he's consistent.
It's that or Romney the "Perfect Conservative" sales pitch, whose Governorship says otherwise. No integrity there. (He talks a great game, and if his record matched, I'd have voted for him in a minute. Imagine that, a Christian who WOULD vote for a Mormon.)
At least Huck's not in the CFR, although he paid them a visit in September. This article, http://www.usadaily.com/article.cfm?articleID=146787, says Reagan was the last President not to be a member. Huck the Reagan standard-bearer? Who'da thought?
Funny how most people who dump on Huckabee have to toss in an insult about him being a former Baptist preacher. Drives libs mad. But they're silent on Obama or Hillary talking religion. |
|
how does old and new describe political ideology? just asking........ |
|
Yes, he is a "compassionate conservative " like Pres Bush. And theres nothing wrong with that.
He's an honorable Christian man, and he sure beats Mitt the flip flopping Mormon, with his mandatory health insurance scheme he collaborated with Ted Kennedy to foist upon the Citizens of Massachussetts.
Oh yeah, if Mitt couldnt beat the unpopular (at the time) and bumbling Ted Kennedy he has no chance against Hillary.
Ill vote third party if Romney gets the nomination.
Hewitt, and Prager have both already decided on Romney and hence have no credible claim to objectivity any more.
|
|
"Huckabee strikes me as a President Bush sort of fellow. He has strong beliefs and he stands by them. Which I, as a Republican voter, really appreciate."
Steadfastness is not a virtue if it is steadfastness in pursuit of pushing America and its people off a cliff.
(apologies to Barry goldwater)
|
|
In fact, perhaps it is time to get over the archaic labels of "liberal" and "conservative".
The more fundamental political division is between the neos and the paleos. |
|
"I really do hate the term neo-con by the way. It's more like neo-liberal. "
They are basically one and the same.
And conversely, paleoliberals and paleoconservatives have way more in common than people tend to realize.
I'm a paleo, by the way. |
|
Well, now Huck is under heavy scrutiny for the Mexican Consulate matter. Not sure how it will play out but it does not look good.
Huckabee never was a major figure, so he never got vetted.
He's getting vetted now, and there do seem to be some things coming out that could derail him.
I sincerely hope that happens because like many on this thread, I do not want an open borders guy as the Republican candidate for President. Especially an "in your face" open-borders guy. |
|
|
I am a big President Reagan fan,(he seems to be everon's standard, now) and do remember him signing the amnesty for 3 million illegals and the 1986 Tax Bill which caused unbelievable harm, culminating in the S&L crisis. Very un-Conservative things to do. So who is your choice for Conservative candidate and how much have you done to get him elected? GOPAC.org |
|
We will see what the GOP stands for now. They are either a conservative party or not.
Romney, Guiliani, or Huckabee as nominees (& probably Thompson too), and the GOP forfeits it's right to call themselves "conservative" any longer. By definition. I mean, it's just factual.
Labor lawyer has a good point below. Looking at people's records and not what they say. Course, if they really meant that, they'd actually look at Clinton's record of dead bodies everywhere.........but, that's in their backyard, not mine.
|
|
|
This con has no ulterior motives. What i do have is two young daughters and a lovely wife. What i do have is a great desire to keep them safe. What i do have are hopes and dreams for them. No fool like you is going to tell me that by believing these religious nuts are serious, that i'm really trying to gain control over the American people. Your side has done nothing but make this danger an opportunity for political advantage. Everything is political to you people. Do you have no life? |
|
And if our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.....but we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpasasing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way but not crushed, perplexed, but not despairing, persecuted but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed.....for momentary light affliction is producing for US an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4,7-9,&17

|
Don't worry Dr. he/she won't answer. |
|
Come on Hugh, it's more than Wayne Drumond. There is Denver Williams and 10 other convicted murderers.
Police put there lives on the line and Investigators work endlessly to get these animals off the street in a system that gives the criminals every benefit of any dout.
It's hard enough to get a conviction with todays liberal judges. The last thing the public needs are leaders that put these scum back on the street. |
|
Oh no problem, and he/she never will. Briggsy aka Bugsy never gets into the battle of ideas with anybody, but loves to throw out what he/she thinks are logical arguments to Conservatives belief, i.e.conservatives favor freedom to own guns, and guns kill people so that is the same as abortion on demand (killing people).Or this current anti-science cannard. He/she is a Bugsy person (always bugging the Right) and a trash (platitudes of the Left) thrower&never picks it up. We should rename Briggsy the "Litter Bugsy" I have great hopes that "Litter Bugsy" will follow the path of their logic to it's illogical conclusions and become a Conservative. I say that because he/she seems like a nice person. Brob, is a low life mean one, whom we all avoid. And Liberal Patriot, now Patriotic Liberal is the allusive, gnostic among us. If we could only be as all knowing, all caring, well read, European, poetic, and just basically above it all.Who knows if he's redeemable...... |
|
I think it is funny how that those who don't like Huck, are the same folks who think that caring for the other guy, is being liberal. If you believe the other candidates, and think that Giulliani, Romney and Thompson are doing other than pandreing to the base, more power to you.
As for Huck, he is the one candidate that has not changed his answers, or moved from his positions. Sure many of his positions make many who only care about money cringe. However, Huck wants to take the Republican party in a realistic direction. Cutting federal spending programs is important to Huck, but if you cut too fast then you do more damamge than good.
Also should a Republican be elected to office he still may face a Democratic Congress, and having another stubborn Executive is not going to benefit the American people.
Sure, being fiscally conservative is important, and we need to reign in the spending; however, being able to negotiate and get things done is more important. The one thing that Democrats will always be able to nail us on is "Being codl hearted" if all we ever debate about is dollars and cents, and not the substance of a program. |
|
|
You've had everyone else on... |
|
What exactly is you academic background? That should be a question you can answer.
Me, my BS is in biology with a minor in chemistry. Got those on the GI plan. My MS is in molecular biology and I have my MD. I go to church every Sunday. I guess I am just an anti science guy. |
|
Thanks for pitching in. I'd never heard the garbage Brugsy or whatever told about Newton, but it doesn't surprise me.
He/she didn't answer your challenge about favorite abortion procedure, or mine about origin of the universe. Just threw the Newton grenade and left.
Meow (just kidding!) |
|
Rudy will get creamed by Hillary. He is the one GOP candidate who will lose to her. There are millions of us who usually vote GOP who WILL NOT vote for Rudy, for a variety of reasons. For me it's the amnesty issue, for others it's life, still others, homosexuality or gun rights. Whatever the issue is, it is a bright line we will not cross. No amount of Hillaryscare, intimidation, name-calling or cajoling will get us to vote for Rudy. He's in the wrong party. Rudy supporters are like someone holding a gun to his own head and threatening to blow his brains out unless we do what they say. Well, go ahead. Don't blame us, we tried to warn you.
|
|
What are doing? Quit listening to MSM, the border crossings are down 75-90% in most areas of Arizona and Texas, the two biggest crossing points. I have Fox News on most of the day, so I am sure I heard it there... who do you support for President, have YOU given him money yet??? If all you look for is bad news, the MSM is happy to comply. |
|
|
I heard again this a.m. Churchill's quote,"The appeaser feeds the crocodile, hoping he will eat him last." If that is not the Left, I don't know what else is. |
|
|
I stand somewhat corrected. Dubya was proactive in responding with military action to the events of 9/11, but you are right about our borders. He's the worst President ever when it comes to protecting them. I've never been so disappointed in a politican in my life. Come convention time I hope they give him a time slot for his speech that is normally reserved for Conan O'Brian. |
|
of our woldview has come up on this thread and I highly recommend each of you right (and open minded) to read,"How Now Shall We Live" by Charles Colson and Nancy Pearcey. Chuck actually has a ad on homepage of Townhall.com "Breakpoint" Also go to rzim.org to read the C.K. Chesterton & C.S. Lewis of our day. Ravi stretches the mind like a rubberband. If you are still a little low go to http://www.persecution.com and read the stories of those who believe what we do. In this blog we are mocked and verbally abused, over there they are torured, imprisoned and killed. Remember oour adversary now roams around the earth seeking whom he can devour (1 Peter 5:8) That's not just talking, that's doing. |
|
The Laborlawyer wrote; ----------------- "It's stunning, really, to watch you folks choose rhetoric over records." -----------------
Laborlawyer, the opponents of Romney and Giuliani distort their records. Besides, we Republicans are choosing the person who can best win the general election---that's why it is coming down to Rudy and Mitt.
What's even more stunning is to watch you and life-long, aging Democrats like yourself ignore both the rhetoric AND the record of the Islamo-fascists.
People likewise ignored Hitler in the late 1930s, and in hindsight, everyone now says, "Look at what Hitler was saying and doing---how come nobody did anything to stop him ?" |
|
|
Well, the Pew Poll was telling us last night that the Hildabeast would cream Rudy. Polled 2000 people to tell us that. Pew has not been right on anything for years. Ras. ,Battleground, Zogby seem to be on track. Odd that those polls have shown Rudy still ahead of all the candidates while the MSM still props up Her Highness. Perhaps after the Philly debate, that might change. Even the Field Poll in Ca. has less than half the voters polled unsure about Hil's electibility. The Huck is still lower tier but could, could be a VP choice if the South is needed. He may not be perfect(no candidate ever is) but his ministry ability may carry the Bible Belt for a Rudy or Mitt. |
|
Sir Isaac Newton was deeply interested in God as Creator and that was his basis to find order and laws in the universe. He wrote more on religion than natural law and it was not a secret. Although much of it was discovered after he died.Your description of him is typically Leftist maligning. And as per usual, you throw out trash, offer no proof what-so-ever (Huckabee/anti-science vote wrapped up)no follow up, and run. BTW you never responded to which abortion method you favor: D&C, Saline, or D&X? Scientifically speaking of course.... |
|
Okay RealClear just dropped the Winthrop poll out of their SC average. They often play games with their averages. They have had a Fred bias from the beginning.
It won't stop Fred's fall. To bad RealClear can not be honest about the race and reporting it. To bad they have to manipulate the data to help their guy. |
|
|
They are not Hillary Rodham Clinton. |

http://www.news2wkrn.com/vv/2007/11/01/fred-thompsons-immig ration-opportunity/
And jtb-in-texas, I am all for greater land border security (and port security since almost as many illegals come in on flights). You brought up racism. I just do not see immigrants as a threat, I see them as a positive thing. We need a system that greatly expands legal immigration, with a goal of assimilation, and lowers illegal immigration.
I don't like McCain-Feingold. I am for no limits on contributions or speach, only full disclosure when you do contribute.
And as far as torture goes, I do not want to see our country lowering its standards to that of al Qaeda scum. We should not torture detainees. I am all for killing those SOBs on the battlefield and welcome that happening. |
|
|
Wow, Huckabee must really be in trouble! Luckily, from the endlessly positive comments on this board, Romney has no such trouble. |
|
|
the nation has already hired one former Arkansas governor... Didn't work out so well... |

no need for $5 lettuce (unless oil prices go too high)... |

It comes down to this: What represents the greater danger to our country right now - social and moral decline or fiscal irresponsibility and big government? Neither are insignificant or completely unrelated, but between the two, the social issues of our day are clearly the more pressing matter. A country will only be strong so long as it values such things as the dignity of human life, the sanctity of monogamous marriage, and the freedom of religion. If these things fall, the country collapses regardless of its position on fiscal matters or federalism.
Hugh's candidate of choice, Mitt Romney, is a very recent convert on some of these crucial social issues and he does have a record of changing his positions to suit the particular office he's pursuing. Mike Huckabee, however, is the one viable candidate in this race who has a consistent track record when it comes to the most important social issues. I don't agree with Mike Huckabee or any other candidate on all of the issues. But on the issues that matter most, Huckabee is the one candidate in this race whose words AND deeds demonstrate a clear and consistent track record. |

of drugs, slaves, illegals from many countries, and other contraband. It is not intended to stop honest workers from going to honest jobs.
And before you get a stick up your hindermost parts, look up visas for migrant workers and learn the FACTS of the matter we're speaking about:
http://www.numbersusa.com/PDFs/Immigration%20Organization%2 0Chart%2001-07.pdf
And be d@mned to you all who would throw away the sovereignity of our nation bought by the blood of patriots. |
|
Mexicans come across the border. You imply we are racists. You ignore McCain's stance against freedom of speech (McCain-Finegold). Your view of the world apparently ignores McCain's insistence that terrorists receive the same treatment as honorable soldiers under the Geneva Convention--a stance that all but assures that our enemies will never be required to follow the rules of war...
Your type of Republican Majority finds no problem with pedophiles like Foley. Not mine.
If the Republicans select a non-Conservative candidate, Hillary will win because most Conservatives will either vote 3rd Party or not at all. |
|
amnesty is considered "conservative".
Unless it is merely because he has managed to woo Dr. Dobson or some other "Kingmaker" wannabe. Being an ordained Baptist Minister does not mean one opposes "gay marriage"--even in Texas... I mean, you can find ordained Baptist Ministers who think the teachings of Buddha, Mohamed, and Confucious are as valuable as the Bible (I know because we found one a few years back when our church was looking for a pastor).
Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, and to a slightly less extent Fred Thompson are the only "Conservatives in the race. Rudy Giuliani is a Liberal. Ron Paul is a distraction. The rest of the field are still trying to figure out a label that will get them elected.
It's time for Republicans to decide whether they want Clintonesque word-parsing from their candidates or plain truth. |
|
But really so what, Huckabee is having a little boomlet in the polls but he is not going to win the nomination.
Tancredo? Are you mad?
Hunter? Great guy who can't seem to persuade his own party.
John McCain would be the best candidate on the war on terror and probably spending, strongest against any of the Dems, but you guys hate him because you fear Mexicans more than al Qaeda.
So let's face fact the GOP candidates remain Rudy, Fred and Mitt. Rudy I like but admit he has some character issues (like in he lets shady characters hang around his campaign). Mitt is is good, but has a pandering problem. Fred is disliked for being too slow, but he seems to be slowly building momentum. |
|
Huck is a liberal on just about everything except abortion. That means in the long run he competes with Rudy and especially McCain for votes. That is why he has not taken off and why he has not gotten a lot of money.
The Evangelicals are still sorting out who they want to support and why. Fred seems to be in a slow motion collapse. He is right on most issues but his campaign is dismal. He does not look like he can beat Rudy.
To a large extent this Huck boomlet is a media creation. It should be dying back down pretty soon as Huck's negatives and liberal positions come out. Many Evangelical are not aware of just how liberal Huck is. They know he is a Baptist Minister who was Gov of AR. As they get more information on his positions and former decisions he will come back to earth.
Right now the liberal press are pushing McCain and Huck. Fortunately, almost everyone pushing them does not vote in the Republican primary. |
|
The Paulistinians, supporters of the Flying Saucer Pilot known as Ron Paul have been up to, when they are not posting delusional nonsense on TownHall Blogs, you might wish to have a look at this:
http://www.wired.com/politics/security/news/2007/10/paul_bo t
It seems the Ronulans like to employ the same software and tactics that the Russian Mafia uses to steal creit card numbers from old ladies in Oshkosh.
I thought you would want to know. |
|
|
As a conservative I am amazed how fellow conservatives are willing to embrace candidates simply because of their ability to raise money and completely abandon candidates who have been lifelong conservatives. While they nitpick Huckabee and McCain, they completely ignore the significant Kerreyesque flip-flops of Romney. The good news for you as a Democrat is that this thinking is going to lead to one of the biggest Democratic landslides in history. |
|
..if it comes down to Huck vs. Rudy, who Hugh pulls for? I bet he goes for the anointed of the "Manhattan-Beltway elite."
We know Hugh is grasping for straws when he goes after Huck's stance on workplace smoking. Funny how he has no problem with a unitary, overarching national government when it comes to the environmental policy, energy policy, or Bush v. Gore, but the sacred principles of "federalism" are invoked when it comes to employee rights. |
|
You write: "Other than being a Baptist minister, there is not much about him that is conservative. Kind of like Bush."
Sorry, bud. For better or worse, history treats Bush as a product of this generation of American conservatism. Bush's failure was not a function of his lack of conservatism--as understood in the contemporary sense--but of conservatism itself.
There is a role for conservatism in the future. There has to be. It is a vital prong in sensible, sober political thinking. But AMERICAN conservatism need to get back to that proverbial "blank sheet of paper" and rethink their thinking from the ground up. |
|
|
That's because rhetoric is all they are left with. It is actually their philosophy that has led to the Republican record of incompetent, corrupt, and blundering governance. Their governing record is so abysmal because their worldview is so ill-conceived. Soon, they won't even have their rhetoric to stand on.. |
|
They're former governors and have executive experience that Thompson, McCain, and Hunter lack.
But Romney governed Massachusetts as conservatively as it is possible to govern it. He governed as a hard-headed businessman little moved by emotional appeals from the professional victim groups that make up the left. That's why he had no hope of being reelected. It is not his nature to succumb to the emotional appeals that substitute for rigorous, logical thought in Liberal La La Land. They found that out and his popularity among the piggies sucking at the public teat plummeted.
Huckabee did NOT govern Arkansas as conservatively as it is possible to govern it. He showed populist tendencies and adopted "compassionate conservative" policies. He will not govern the US conservatively. He is a sucker for the professional victim language of the left. He adopted such language in the interview in this thread, hyperbolically calling it "punishment" if the children of illegal aliens are not allowed college educations at government expense. It is NOT punishment. Fines and imprisonment are punishment.
Hard-headed businessman Mitt Romney would not make such a mushy-headed mistake. |
|
It is very interesting to me as a Democrat that the two leading Republican candidates, Romney and Giuliani, have established records of moderately liberal governance but have (so far) won over the conservative vote with near-hysterical rightist pronouncements. Whereas the two most solidly conservative candidates by their records, Huckabee and McCain, are viewed with disdain because they refuse to toe the rightist rhetorical line.
Do any of you really know what either Giuliani or Romney would be like as Republican nominees and/or as President? Would they be the men they were when they actually held positions of responsibility, or the men they are portraying whilst campaigning for your hearts and minds? Personally, I have no idea, and I cannot fathom how any of you who call yourselves Republicans can either. But I feel I know exactly what a President McCain or Huckabee would be (as well as a President Clinton or Edwards- Obama, not so sure). It's stunning, really, to watch you folks choose rhetoric over records. |
|
"Mike Huckabee is consistently Conservative. None of the candidates are perfect, but he comes closest to the mark as far as I'm concerned."
Disagree.
Hugh's interview was absolutely fantastic and forced Gov Huckabee to take a position. To his credit, he did it unlike Sen. Clinton.
IMO, the smoking issue has little to do with whether you agree with smoking in public places or not, but more to deal with the constitutional relationship between the federal government and states.
Mr. Huckabee said that he would be in favor of a federal law banning smoking for the entire country in workplaces. This is a liberal idea. If it is bad, then let the states or communities decide. Keep the feds out of it.
If smoking in places of employment were so bad, then the market would drive bars and restaurants and workplaces to offer non-smoking establishments on their own without federal interference.
Instead, if a bar wants to choose to allow smoking let them. If they find they lose business, they will put in a no-smoking policy. There should be no need for government regulation on this matter and especially on a nationwide basis. |

Just consider our still wide open borders and his allowing of the persecutory prosecution of our Marines based on testimony of the enemy and the pusillanimous press. |

Except for his skills of eloquence, Huckabee does seem to be a great deal like Dubya. In the debates he really impressed me and I got an impression of him as a true blue conservative. But upon further review, and considering how he supports such things such as federal laws about someone being able to light up a cig in a bar, the guy screams neo-con domestic agenda to me.
I really do hate the term neo-con by the way. It's more like neo-liberal. Very little about GWB's brand of Republicanism (with the exception of defense policy) remotely resembles what I grew understanding conservatism to be (Goldwater, Reagan, etc.) |

Hugh,
Your interview was solid and fair. There should be no gripes from the Huck folks. It was a lot better that what he would get from the MSM. He just has to be able to answer the tough questions or he's not "prime-time" ready. Period. His tax cut record is pretty solid, I think. Some of his other stances are not conservative, but no candidate has that Holy Grail in the bag right now. We need to pick the best candidate that has shown the best ability to organize and has the best chance of beating Mrs. Clinton. Huck could surprise (I doubt it), and I would support him if he won. Frankly, I would support Ron Paul before Hillary. I think we all have a pretty good set of choices before us. We should be thankful.

My post didn't show up the 1st time I submitted it. (Sheepishly walks away ducking tomatoes being thrown) |

I like Mike Huckabee because he doesn't do any of the above. Hewitt asked Huckabee specifically if he was going to ban smoking and he said NO because what you do in your private residence is your business. Hewitt makes it sound as though the answer was just the opposite.
Huckabee said that he understands why people want to come here. He also said that the borders must be secured. Trying to deal with kids who were grew up here, brought here by parents who came illegally is a decision that would trouble Solomon. Why you want to pin the Presidency on a sound bite, I don't know.
I DO know that Romney changes his mind with every office he has sought. I can't put my trust he won't change his mind again.
Mike Huckabee is consistently Conservative. None of the candidates are perfect, but he comes closest to the mark as far as I'm concerned. |

The usual caricature...creationists are anti-science.
Some of history's greatest scientists believed in God (Isaac Newton, for one).
Every US President has, too, therefore it's safe to assume they probably believed in creation. So how exactly would Huckabee be disqualified for the job?
Evolution is just a theory (Darwin even said so), to this day unproven. Oh yeah, I must have changed channels when the discovery of the feathered dino-bird was shown.
Think before you type. Peace. |

What a tired old caricature...creationists are anti-science (first time I heard it I laughed so hard I fell off my dinosaur, har de har)
Some of history's greatest scientists believe in God (Isaac Newton, for one).
Evolution, meanwhile, is a theory (Darwin even said so) that's never been proven. Oh yeah, I must have changed channels when the feathered dinosaur fossil was revealed to the world.
So if the material universe wasn't created, what's your vote on where it came from? Or has it just always been here?
Think before you type. Peace. |

Ive been taking a pretty hard look at Huckabee lately. That interview was one of the better ones ive seen. Huckabee strikes me as a President Bush sort of fellow. He has strong beliefs and he stands by them. Which I, as a Republican voter, really appreciate.
But I just can't make up my mind on the guy. I didn't want to vote for President Bush in 2000 because I knew he was a "compassionate conservative" and that worried me. He's given me pause a lot of times throughout his administration. But for all his faults, I can't help but love President Bush for what he's done to keep me and my family safe after 9/11.
So in that way, I really like Huckabee because he reminds me of President Bush. The only thing is, he reminds me of the liberal parts of President Bush and doesn't necessarily remind me of the war on terror President Bush.
For now I think i'm sticking with Romney but i'm going to be keeping my eye on Huckabee. |
|
Huckster isn't gonna be my "Huckle-berry", and IMO, he's a lying, phony, pos,....preacher or not!
He's an even worse "flip flopper" than Romney.
It's funny how the truth has a way of coming out, but pols like Huckster think they can hide from it! |

You can review the video to the Morgan State College debate where he and Senator Brokeback put on an embarrassing display of shameless pandering to the largely black audience. He didn't hint about it. He came right out and declared it. If one good thing came out of that debate, it was that Hunter, Tancredo and Paul stuck to their message and spoke to the audience about tough questions about race by pointing out that the biggest problem threatening blacks was illegal immigration. Huck and Broke sounded like Jesse Jackson. Check it out. |

If I'm a 527 going after Huck, I touch on every single one of Hugh's talking points. |
|
|
I think you need to document that statement, Phil. I've never heard that before and I doubt that it is true. Huckabee states that a wall needs to be built on the border before doing anything else. When it comes to illegal immigrant children, the subject was about their children who managed to reach a high and successful level of education to qualify entry into a scholarship for gifted students. Huckabee is in favor of allowing them access to that scholarship if they become citizens. Would you rather have them working or walking around your town in a gang? I'd rather see them be successful. He's not talking about people who entered the country illegally, but their children. Why punish the children for their parents mistakes? |

Romney has not evolved, he has flip flopped, just like he is now a "Reagan republican." He is for cheap labor just like Bush. |
|
|
McCain, Rudy, and Huckabee won't enforce the current laws and should not be President. We have had enough of that. We need a President who will enforce the laws and secure the border. Hunter is the one I trust to get the job done. Romney has evolved on this issue. Thompson is saying the right things now, but voted differently as a Senator. They are possibilities, but would require watching. Tancredo could be trusted as well. |

His pandering to the black vote by supporting reparations to descendants of former slaves. Other than being a Baptist minister, there is not much about him that is conservative. Kind of like Bush. |
