Christmas Cheer From the Anti-War Left
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 1:31 PM

I didn't post this yesterday because it was just too depressing for Christmas. But today? Let's put it out there.

Yesterday--Christmas Day--this was the top "Featured Video" on YouTube. It's young Heather Martin singing "When Are You Coming Home?" a sweet little song about Heather's older brother Shaun, who is fighting in Iraq this Christmas. Heather's mother wrote the song, and Heather performed it at what looks like a church service:

It's a non-political song. I thought it was a pretty sweet look at one family's pain and faith and bravery in the face of war, and it left the heavy-handed political overtones for another day. I was also glad to see it out front, considering YouTube front-paged the Littlest Moonbat a couple of weeks ago (if you haven't seen that one, go watch).

But a non-political, sentimental song about the Iraq War isn't enough for the moonbat commenters at YouTube. Heather Martin and her parents have a moral duty to go all Cindy Sheehan on Bushitler's War for Profit or they and their loved ones are accessories to BushCo's murderous ways. Think the commenters would go easy on her just because she's 6 and it's Christmas? Think again (apologies in advance for the language). These were the first three comments on her YouTube video:

Here are some fun ones, on the second page of comments:

"FUCK THE US TROOPS" and "I hope her brother dies." These sentiments for a 6-year-old who misses her brother at Christmastime. And, they took the time to communicate these sentiments on Christmas Day. Meet the compassionate anti-war Left on the Internet. Lovely.

I only wish I was mischaracterizing the response, but go flip through if you dare. There are positive comments, too, but the virulence and volume of the anti-Heather-and-Shaun-Martin comments is appalling. These people-- peace activists, I believe they like to be called-- are disgusting.

If you disagree with the war, and you think this little girl is being used for pro-war propaganda, there are plenty of ways to say it without wishing her brother dead or telling her her brother only joined the Army because he couldn't cut it in college (that's in the mix of comments today).

I think the argument that she's being exploited is a serious stretch, especially given that these are the same folks who applauded the "honesty" and "guts" and "speaking truth to power" of the Littlest Moonbat (who wasn't at all coached, right? Ha!). The song is almost entirely non-political, and all of the sentiments therein, though written by her mom, are easily ones a 6-year-old little sister could express.

Of course, Heather Martin's just part of the machine, man. The blonde bangs and floral print dress are just standard-issue camo for another one of Halliburton's minions. Jerks.

More on the Martin family and Shaun:

Naturally, the song struck a nerve with Heather's big brother.

"He played the song for his buddies,” said Bob Martin, Shaun Martin's father. "He said he really had to fight back the tears.”

In the Martin household, the thought of Christmas without the eldest of five children is inconceivable. Last Christmas, Shaun Martin dressed as Santa and spoiled his siblings and parents with special gifts. Heather received a pink bicycle with a built-in lunch pouch.

Shaun Martin feared he wouldn't be with his family this year for Christmas. He was right.

This year, Shaun Martin is somewhere in Iraq, where his mother said he is helping to conduct house-to-house searches.

"Naturally, we worry about him all the time,” Bob Martin said. "But we are very proud of him, that he wants to do this for his country. ... I would just hope all the soldiers and their families would get a chance to hear this song.

"I think it would mean a lot to a lot of people.”

Keep them in your prayers.

On Mary Katharine Ham
You are a Republican, and so is this so-called townhall blog. I am a true conservative. Let's conserve our American liberties; let's conserve human rights and basic decency; let's conserve the standards set forth at Nuremburg, those that hung Hilter's thugs.

I was impressed
I like the lilting quality of the song and although my decreped ears have a way of melting a childs sung words all together, little Miss Heather is without a doubt a real charmer and managed to bring a little water to my crusty old eyes.

I can honestly say, even though I don't miss him personally,I hope that Shaun and Heather are reunited soon and that he is a victorious warrior, returning to a grateful and united country. Wow,that was more childlike than Heather.I was REALLY born in the wrong time.

God bless ALL of the American Fighting Shauns and everyone of their loved ones, named Heather or otherwise, may He keep them safe in their appointed rounds.Thank you Shaun, for you and your family.

Saddam is dead, the war is over.
Saddam Hussein was executed over 148 Iraqi deaths he was responsible for.

What's the punishment for a war criminal that has the blood of 655,000 Iraqis, and 3,000 Americans on his hands?
jlwb writes: Sunday, December, 31, 2006 2:03 AM
could we be honest?
Could we just remember a little history and be honest? We’ve been the targets of terrorists for well over 20 years. Remember the Marines barracks in Lebanon? Berlin? 1st WTC?
Do people remember that our planes were routinely targeted in the no fly zone over Iraq?
Does anyone remember the children that were dying every month in Iraq, for years, under Saddam? Do you remember the shredders? Better to put a person in feet 1st so they suffer longer! Have the Kurds been forgotten? Did you see the bodies of women and children dead from the gas? Are you against going into Iraq? Are you screaming for us to go into Darfor?
Do you remember the young marine who shot the “poor wounded Iraqi” in the mosque? Did you read the follow up that the Iraqi was indeed reaching to set off a bomb? How about at Gitmo? The soldier that hit a prisoner over the head with a portable radio? The soldier was busted down to private. Did you read what was going on? The prisoner knocked out one soldier’s tooth and was trying to gouge the eyes out of another soldier.
Did you read the NYT? They were very upset that the US government let documents be published. Iraqi documents that were so specific on how to build nuclear bombs that Iran could learn how to build them. But, how could this be?
Let me be a bit more personal. Did you hear of the 4-year-old girl that was hung from a lamppost? She waved at a US Army group. Did you hear about the US Army group arresting the murder? Probably not. You probably didn’t hear about this same group building one school from the ground up and fixing another school.
Do you know the rate of crime in the general population of 18 to 25 year olds in the USA? Do you know the rate of crime of 18 to 25 year olds in the Army?
For that matter, do you know the IQ level, or educational level of these populations?
If you think that the people in the service joined because of the pay, take a quick google and find out what the pay is! If you think they joined because they are brain dead, look into their backgrounds and IQ levels. If you think they joined because they like to kill, go talk to a recruiter. Try to join and play the “I want to kill people” attitude.
Nothing is perfect and we will always have a few whack jobs, idiots, “I’m here for a college education only” people who get in to the service. But, go spend a few minutes on a base and you will see the majority are an amazing group of articulate, intelligent, honorable young men and women that put those who have not joined to shame!

Those people posting on youtube were idiot scumbags. And so are you for insinuating all people on the left are like them.

Mr. Chester
Thank you for your post. I'd compliment you further, but I don't want the people to get the wrong idea.

You're mostly right. When there is pain and sorrow, I hope to convince others to stop perpetuating the pain and sorrow.

I never called the military "victims". Here are my words from above:

"Her brother is trying to make his life a little better, and if he lives, he can earn a decent living through the military. And while trying to make his life better, he is also signing up to be an American soldier, putting his life on the line, as they are told, for the American people. I just believe that they should not be held accountable for Iraq."
Patrick Chester writes: Friday, December, 29, 2006 4:05 AM

...and johnnymasters exposes the other side of the left:

Cynical exploitation of pain and sorrow in the hopes that they can cloud people's judgement in their favor.

Nice use of the "military as poor hapless victims" meme, btw. Shows exactly how much respect you have for them.

"Dixie Chicks?
Oh brother! The Dixie Chicks are nothing but a semi-talented trio with big mouths. Every time they open those big mouths it exposes more of their ignorance. I, for one, do not listen to entertainers who spew their political thoughts because I know most are just as or less informed as I am. They were silenced by people who decided not to buy their albums because they did not agree with their hateful attitude toward America. It had nothing to do with the "Republican War Machine." I have a daughter who considers herself a Democrat (lately I have heard her griping about government intrusion, and complaining about taxes and I just smile to myself...) and she thinks the Dixie Chicks just need to shut up because they make themselves look more foolish and like publicity hounds every time they talk politics. Let's be honest, it takes NO courage to bash Bush, so those who claim the Dixie Chicks have somehow shown courage are either dim bulbs or are showing complete dishonesty."

All a person has to do to turn the Republican War Machine "on" is mention the Dixie Chicks. This is the second post that attempts to suggest that I idolize these country women, a deliberate attempt to discredit me. They want to ruin me because they want to ruin you, and I won't let them. I am not ready to make nice. I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. I know a campaign that could take the Republican Party out once and for all.

JM, you are full of crap wrt the Dixie Chicks. When I see entertainers or other prominent figures spit on their own country during time of war for a cheap laugh, I will simply not give them another penny. No RWM needed. The Dixie Chicks is but one example, there are countless others. And yes I will remember. Not another penny. Ever.

The above post is from an anti-war simpathizer.
She is pointing out that "maybe we don't belong in Iraq", refering to the Iraq War. She continues on by declaring "its not [Heather's] fault" and "i don't blame [Shawn, Heather's brother]". According to ILuvValetParking, even though Shawn voluntarily signed up for the military, Shawn should not be held accountable for the Iraq War.

The troops are not to blame, Bush and the flacid Congress are: the so-called officials, the ones making the decisions that the military obediently execute.

Sad but typical
It was a real toss up as to which I found more depressing: the comments at YouTube or the comments here. The comments here won. Why? Because the comments here are written by people who are obviously a lot more intelligent than the comments written the masses at YouTube who probably spend most of their time their waiting for the next tit video to show up.

Some of comments here are just as hateful as the comments there, they're just better written. MKH commented that since she works on the internet she gets exposed to it more often. That's very sad for her because that means she has probably read 100 times the amount of hate filled leftist garbage as I have, and I've read enough of it to last me a lifetime.

Anyone remember a little thing called Beslan? Who here is still looking for the "root cause" for that? Probably the same people who can't let a cute little girl sing a song to her brother without wishing him dead (On Christmas Day, no less), or who then go out of their way to excuse those who say things like that.

I'm an atheist so I won't say a prayer for that family, but I do thank Shaun for his service, and I hope he comes home safe. We all owe him an ice cream.

The Israeli army is more powerful than the rest of the arab world put together, so I highly doubt the arab world would attack them anytime soon, especially considering the last time they did that they actually LOST land. And even in the highly unlikely event of another major terrorist attack, how precisely does that place us all under Shiara law?

Packingheat and GunnyG

"I'm really a swell shot with a gun." is precisely the kind of 'diplomacy' that got us into the Iraq mess in the first place. Why aren't you over there putting those finely honed skills to good use? I hear the army is a bit short these days.

Beside lyrics that are sweet (no more than if big bro had a job in Japan...she just misses him and wants the job to be over even tho it makes her proud he has such a job)....it amazes me how in tune she is, how much she had to memorize, understanding verses and refrain, and the confidence in front of the audience. So smooth, maybe there wasn't an adult mouthing words to her to help. I realize many children are capable of this...and many are not. Still, it is always fascinating.

I love how her face changes honestly when she sings "Shaun, when are you coming home?"
I chuckle at the basic choreography----something else this sweetheart had to get right!

Cognitive Dissonance Ahoy!
C'mon, johnnymasters, the Dixie Chicks were only introduced to a few things called target demographics, consumer choice, and consequences.

The true irony is that these singers didn't realize that words have power. They made a bad business decision that resulted in the alienation of their customer base. There was no conspiracy against them...it was merely a bunch of people voting with their wallets (and throwing out a few STFUs in their own exercise of free speech).

And bobbyd, perhaps you could explain why taking people at their word and NOT theorizing that the posters are playing shadow games somehow DOES make it a 'liberal conspiracy theory?'

Redux 1972
I saw this behavior in 1972-1974 also; the wishes that our POWs would be tortured, that our soldiers would be killed, because that was an "unjust" war and they were "baby killers". Jane Fonda, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry cannot prove any of what they said about the war; but for the latter two, their Moonbat supporters in Massachusetts kept (and keep) re-electing them because of their "anti-war courage". It certanily can't be because of their moral courage on anything else. Sheesh!

The Left are the people who militate for hate crime legislation for acts and even words against homosexuals, blacks, etc. Maybe we need legislation making acts and words against soldiers hate crimes; anyone who wishes a 6-year old's brother dead cannot plead "politics" for an excuse for what appears to me to be a hate crime.

BTW, I liked the video and thank Mary Katharine for pointing it out. A little schmaltzy, but it deserves to be.

Personally, I don't care what the Dixie Chicks do, if they make money and make it to number whatever on a VH1 chart makes no difference to me, but saying the Republican War Machine tried to silence them smacks of extreme paranoia, and the comment about MLK makes you look like you may be frothing.

You are a Republican and what you are currently doing is precisely what I am talking about. Attack, attack, attack. Sometimes it's difficult to keep up with these GOP name-calling idiots.

The Dixie Chicks were not leaders in the anti-war movement, but were victims of the Republican War Machine. It's just that now that machine is imploding, and their song, "I'm not ready to make nice," made #12 on VH1's Top 40 Music Videos of 2006, so the Republican War Machine wasn't able to completely silence them, which no doubt gets under Dottie's skin. That same War Machine is responsible for Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

According to you, "Islamist ideology" is the threat. Since when has this become a religious war? If so, it seems like it would benefit the religious officials, not humanity. Muslims and Christians and Jews are all children of Abraham, we all should be able to get along.

I think you should be clearer. You believe that brown people, men, women, and children, in a continent on the opposite side of the world should be murdered, just or not, for the hell of it. Hell, it's fun getting mad at people, and then getting to use blood-curtling rhetoric is the cherry on top. Jesus taught people to love their enemies, and anyone pro Iraq war cannot call themselves Christian and maintain a clear conscience.

I appreciate you posting this because it gives me an opportunity to crystalize my perspectives through argument.

Dixie Chicks "I'm not ready to make nice" seems fitting. When the Dixie Chicks got stuck in a controversy, the Republican War Machine turned them into lepers, nobody wanted to get near them. And now the Dixie Chicks have continued their singing careers, and things are going fine, but they won't forget how vicious they were treated, hence the title, I am not ready to make nice.

Wishing for Heather's brother to die is morbidly psychotic, especially after watching her video. Her brother is trying to make his life a little better, and if he lives, he can earn a decent living through the military. And while trying to make his life better, he is also signing up to be an American soldier, putting his life on the line, as they are told, for the American people.

Saying "F*ck the Troops" is foolish. When I read this line, immediately the word "buffoon" comes to mind. While I disagree with this person's opinion, I resonate with his/her anger at the Republican war machine, the same one the Dixie Chicks are not soon to forget.

Heather Martin is a very welcoming face for the anti-war movement, especially after seeing how many idiots post replies on the Internet; and how those replies are given to the "Left", even when they are mixed in with perverted comments of every kind.

"In the war of 1812, the British came at the US with a vastly superior force and lost.
We, with out vast military might, can't subdue a 3rd world country."

It doesn't have to be as great as a massive Muslim invasion of the US. It could be the defeat of Israel's army by combined Arab forces, which would almost certainly precipitate a great slaughter of Jews. It could be the explosion of a nuclear weapon in Paris. The most alarming thing, howeever, is the rising Muslim population in Europe combined with the resurgence of radical Wahhabism. If the Islamist ideology goes unconfronted, it _will_ cause massive and destabilizing geopolitical effects.
Canatheist writes: Tuesday, December, 26, 2006 5:52 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen of moderate views
The war in Iraq is a very contentious issue, and it seems that people are very passionate about it one way or another. Some see it as an exercise in total folly and must be ended now. Others see it as a great crusade against the evils of Islam that must not be abandoned at any cost. Most are somewhere in the middle. This in no way excuses the bad behavior people are exhibiting, though, from either side.

I find it interesting that there are baby killer comments in war discussions. No doubt most moderate lefties would say "they aren't real lefties" much as moderate righties would make the same claim about Fred Phelps and Ann Coulter.

I think the biggest problem in Iraq is this: There is no easy, or even spinnable, way out. So it's time to pick the least painful way out, bite the bullet and do it. Unfortunately for the current administration, which is already among the least popular in history of two term presidents, (Nixon still holds the record at 24%, and he was about to get impeached), they don't have the political capital to spend to go either with a huge buildup (requiring a draft) or completely pulling out (requiring a reversal of course, which this adminstration seems incapable of doing). So it looks like we're stuck until either the next congress removes funding, or the next president is elected.

I feel sorry for the people that work at the whitehouse trying to make things work for the current administration. It must be like being handed a bailing can on the titanic.

Guys...
Of course there are nutties on both sides of the aisle and the war debate, but the sad fact is that this IS far too often the face of the anti-war Left on the Internet. I see it all the time. You see it on "mainstream" blog sites like DailyKos (remember "screw 'em"?), you see it when Dick Cheney has heart troubles, you see it when the First Lady has a tumor removed. It's so predictable it's ridiculous, and it almost always overwhelms the more sane sentiments in the same threads. I was hoping not to find it in a thread about a 6-year-old on Christmas Day, but the place was overrun with it.

I am glad for the anti-war lefties I know who are not like them, but I work on the Internet, and on the Internet, you don't get enough good lefties laying into these folks-- ones like this, that Johnnymasters cites (inexplicably saying it's a response to hawks??? Um, no.):

But MKH is telling us apparently that all liberals hate the troops and that this sentiment posted by youtubers must represent the sentiment of all liberals.

I'm sure she's not just trying to set up a straw man or cast a wide net or anything like that. I mean it's obvious those crude comments came from liberals and represent the feelings of all liberals. I mean I'm sure those people making those comments were not just teenagers right MKH.

Seriously MKH when you post such a thread with the implied assumption that these ignoramuses are liberals, with the assumption that they aren't just a bunch of rude kids and with the implication that this likely represents the sentiment of all liberals you are IMO making a post about 1 year more mature then I'm guessing the ages of the You Tube nut jobs.

This clip threatens the Right's positioning more than any other clip I have ever seen, and so poignant. Heather Martin wants her brother home, and the Left wants the troops home.

I don't think anybody is posing as the Left, or anyone other than themselves for that matter, their comments are quite clear: kill Iraqis, or die. Don't sing songs to your big brother. Shut your mouth and be thankful for all the freedom America has already given you.

This clip has been generating a ton of comments, and it continues to get bigger, so generalizing is never good. Here is one example:

ILuvValetParking (3 minutes ago)

"this is the most adorable thing ie seen in a long time, to all you poeple saying stupid things just shut up, i dont wanna sound mean but this is really cute maybe we dont belong in Iraq but its not her fault her brothers there he thinks hes helping the country and i dont blame him and she mises him its adorable just cherish what you have because before yo know it, it can be gone"

This person is responding to "all you people saying stupid things" and then she concedes her anti-war beliefs with "maybe": maybe we don't belong in Iraq. Then ILuvValetParking says that she is adorable, so "shut up".

This user is clearly responding to the Hawks and believes the hawks are the ones saying such vicious things.

The Internet is freedom of speech, and with freedom of speech people are going to say crappy things. They are allowed, it can't and shouldn't be stopped, and we should just learn to filter through "the people's" comments to distinguish between "Hm that's interesting" comments from the "OHMYGOD that's disgusting" comments.

There are too many countercurrents in our political culture and nailing down one source for all of these venomous words is impossible. When first saw the clip I immediately saw it in the terms of promoting the anti-war movement. The Right has more to lose, and therefore, they are the ones who should be mad.

The Right
They attack Kucinich, they attack the New York Times, they attack the Dixie Chicks, they attack Cindy Sheehan, and now they are attacking a little girl.

Shame on you Otter.

Johnnymasters...
Ahh, do you mean to imply that it's righties, knowing the power that Heather's clip could have, that took to blasting her and her brother while posing as lefties so as to distract from the true nature of the clip? That's what it sounded like you were saying, but that would be awfullly Truther of you. Maybe I'm misreading you.

You also misread the comment before yours, which doesn't encourage religious genocide, but points out the need to fight against Islamists, in particular (not all Muslims), who really do want to kill us all or put us under sharia. It's kinda their M.O.

Take over the west?
In the war of 1812, the British came at the US with a vastly superior force and lost.
We, with out vast military might, can't subdue a 3rd world country.

How, precisely, can a rag tag group of militant islamics with only small arms and IEDs take over the west and place us all under Shiara law?

Call Kucinich
Heather Martin has single-handedly stopped the Iraq War. This clip is so powerful and moving, and the words are from her perspective, she cannot be blasted for her love for her brother. Some online users have. If used right, this clip could be used to garner popular support to end the Iraq War, and with great success: any Bush supporter knows this and have aired their grievances with rage; the Left aren't the only Internet users. For example, the above post. This post is talking about religious genocide (perhaps he's in the Klan).

We have many people defending the throne.
When are we going to defend our own?

Heather Martin is the heart and soul of America.

And by the way...
.....How they're fighting for our "rights" and our way of life is because the "insurgents" that our military is targeting in Iraq/Afgan./around the world, want to eventually take over the West (re:America) and put both your and my butt under that stupid Sharia law. I don't know about you, but my wife ain't gonna put up with that nonsense, much less that whole burka thing. Wake Up: these crazy Islamists want us under their thumb. Fight them where they live.

Twisted
These people are dangerously sad. I'd say ignore them, but they almost make that impossible too. And their spelling and grammar are atrocious.

I hope that little girl's brother comes home with lots of stories of bravery and honor. And lots of stories about the scores of sick, twisted Islamo-leftist-fascist bastards he and his mates have blown to smithereens in that desert hell hole, thus helping to rid this world of their sick gutter religion ideology. May the West prevail! God Bless America and The American Military. Oo-rah.

Idiots are everywhere
Don't think that the caustic fools are limited to one side of the fence, or that they are somehow less caustic because they are on your side. You may laugh if you read something viscious on DailyKos, but does that make it better? Bad behavior is simply that, regardless of which side of the field you're on. One painfully obvious thing about the internet though - a lot of people use the anonymity to give voice to their personal prejudices.

One of the fundamental ironies of free speech is that you're free to criticize those who protect it. I might dislike what someone is saying about me, but I'll fight tooth and nail for their right to say it.

That being said, I don't think the soldiers in Iraq are fighting to protect our rights. If someone has an argument as to how they are, I'd love to hear it.

I do not understand the left!
Do they go out of their way to appear nuts, or is this natural behavior for them? Wishing an American dead when he is sacrificing on their behalf (whether they want to admit it or not); spewing hate at American troops--the ones enforcing their right to spew such hatred? Wow!

I do not think I need to read more freaky comments, so I will not be going to the site. I will be keeping the Martins and all service families in my prayers, however.

Christmas Cheer
Isn't it interesting, the moonbats sniping at the video have such a lack of command of the English language? Sick people, every one of them.
