Rumblings In The Conservative Underdog World
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 2:16 PM
Conservatives are poking around to see if their failed underdog in NY-23 was conned out of some votes:
Unless Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman got exactly zero votes in the town of Fenner (Owens got 157, Scozzafava got 248), and at one polling place in the town of Hamilton (Owens got 75, Scozzafava got 79), and at one polling place in the town of Sullivan (Owens got 173, Scozzafava got 251), the initial vote totals look rather hinky.

By comparison, the lowest number of votes that Owens got at any polling place was 57; the lowest number the withdrawn candidate Scozzafava got was 2. It's not impossible that no one in any of those places chose to vote for Hoffman, but it certainly seems unusual for a guy who got 45 percent district-wide.
The margin was such that it would have to be a pretty big voter fraud for the results to come out any differently. But it's still very much worth gossiping about.

Then there's this special emergency meeting being requested by Marco Rubio supporters in Florida:
We have observed in recent weeks an unprecedented series of reports and events in the media which cast negative perceptions of the Republican Party, both to the public and to our members.  While many factors may be involved in the various circumstances, our members and the public are receiving continuing negative reports about issues involving financing, candidates, political activities and more, concerning the Republican Party.  This has been, and continues to be, extremely damaging to our Party, our candidates, and our members.
I can imagine how that meeting would go: "How about you take notice of a candidate who is actually supported by Florida voters, instead of lining up behind Crist like bunch of little tweenage girls at a Hanna Montana concert?"

Happy Birthday Morton Blackwell!
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:56 PM
On November 16, Morton Blackwell will celebrate his 70th birthday.  Tonight, there will be a dual celebration: Morton's 70th birthday -- and his Leadership Institute's 30th birthday.

If you're not familiar with Morton, you should be; few modern conservative leaders have done more to advance the cause of liberty.

Morton has had a long and distinguished career.  Before founding The Leadership Institute (Li) in 1979, he was Barry Goldwater’s youngest elected delegate to the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco.  In 1980, he organized and oversaw the national youth effort for Ronald Reagan.  He then served as Special Assistant to the President from 1981-1984.  In 1984, he became the full-time President of Li.

Having worked at Li for four years, I can personally tell you that the organization is one of the most important in the nation -- and that Morton is one of the most dedicated and honorable men I have ever known.  I feel truly blessed to have known him and to have worked for him.  Clearly, I would not be doing what I am doing were it not for the lessons I learned from Morton.

Aside from being dedicated to training the next generation of conservative leaders, Morton and his wife Helen are proud grandparents.  And Morton also has an interesting hobby: He is an avid beekeeper.

Morton has said of his late friend Paul Weyrich that, "If there were a Mount Rushmore for conservative leaders, Paul's face would have to be on it."

I think it's fair to also say that Morton's face would be right there, too...

Republican Lowden the Clear Front-Runner in Nevada
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:36 PM
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/assets_c/2009/10/reid_lowden_split-cropped-proto-custom_2.jpg

I have been around enough campaigns to know that you can usually identify the front-runner as the candidate who has the most wacky, personal attacks thrown at them.

Sue Lowden is the front-runner in the Republican primary to unseat Majority Leader Harry Reid, and if the election were held today -- she would win by double digits.  Still, there's a long way to go -- and she will surely have to fend off attacks from her Republican opponents, as well as from the Harry Reid political machine.

The latest controversy regards accusations that, as Chairman of the Nevada GOP, Lowden may have suggested using showgirls to spice up a 2008 John McCain campaign rally at the Las Vegas airport.  On a phone interview this morning, Lowden denied officially submitting this idea as proposal, though she said it's entirely possible she may have joked about it at some point.

Regardless of the veracity of this, the accusation hardly seems controversial.  After all, it is typical protocol for Las Vegas' Mayor to greet dignitaries at the airport with Show Girls.  Having showgirls greet a candidate in, say, Alabama, might raise some eyebrows -- but in Las Vegas, of all places -- it's not really taboo.  In fact, it's an iconic part of the Las Vegas tourism industry.

Of course, this is really a distraction from the issues that matter, and from the fact that Lowden seems to have the best shot at ousting Harry Reid.  If you are interested in the conservative record of Sue Lowden and what kind of Senator she would be, read her recent op-ed on BigGovernment.com.

Glenn Beck: No Sympathy for Carrie Prejean
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 1:29 PM
Glenn Beck discussed Carrie Prejean's childish temper tantrum from last night's Larry King Live on his radio show this morning.  I couldn't agree with him more: her street cred is shot... and there's no way I will be buying her book.

Unlike Jillian and Hengler, I don't think Prejean's being treated unfairly at all.  She was a private citizen, but the attacks on her continue because she's keeping herself out there--open to criticism.  And then when she is criticized, she complains how unfair or "inappropriate" people are being.  I'm with Beck on this one--own up to whatever mistakes you've made in the past; don't try to lie and squirm your way out of them--LEARN from them.

The Whole & Very Uncomfortable Prejean Walks Off Larry King Interview
Posted by: Greg Hengler at 12:58 PM
Trying to understand what led to Carrie Prejean's actions on "Larry King [is still a] Live" within the 3-minute clip is unfair. So I am providing a clip of the full interview (I pulled a couple irrelevant pieces to fulfill YouTube's 10-minute quota) so you can see the mood Larry set at the beginning and throughout the whole interview. Like most emotional moments, there's more to it than meets the eye.

Here you will see and hear King's immediate hostility towards Carrie; his smug responses; the constant pen tapping while Carrie is talking; other inappropriate and irrelevant questions like, "Have you seen the video?"; and the agreement that there would be no questions from callers (especially the first and last hand-picked call); et al.

I believe this interview vindicates Prejean's charge that she and other conservative women are unfairly targeted by the liberal media. If you don't believe me, observe how Larry King treats the Goracle on tomorrow night's program.

The New Dem Strategy: Confusion & Exhaustion
Posted by: Michael Medved at 12:49 PM
After Republican victories in the elections of 2009, the Obama strategy has become increasingly obvious—and obnoxious. The administration means to continue pushing dozens of complicated measures at once, leaving their opponents so confused and exhausted that they’ll be unable to fight back.

In health care in particular, perplexing details help the administration, while clarity and simply-stated arguments serve the opposition. At this moment in political history, the real focus should be on one overriding issue, not many nuanced and bewildering proposals. The big struggle involves the scope of spending and the size of government—expensive new programs will only add to the debt and lead to national bankruptcy. Durable prosperity will only return when our politicians return to fiscal sanity. That’s the issue conservatives must stress—while not letting Democrats go unchallenged in their efforts to distract and confuse.

Among Registered Voters, Republicans Now Outnumber Democrats
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 11:56 AM
Gallup reports that 48% of registered voters are Republicans and 44% are Dems. Peter Roff says that's the result of independents swinging rightwards:
Independents were an important part of the Obama coalition, responding favorably to his calls for change and his promise to bring a post-partisan, problem-solving agenda with him to the presidency. The fact that Congress is in a state of perpetual gridlock despite near-historic majorities for the president's party in both the House and Senate undermines his ability to cast himself as a problem-solver.
That's in sharp contrast to Larry Sabato's analysis, who maintains that there are two groups of independents who come out if they are really motivated for the R's or the D's -- but they don't come out for both.

Prejean Walks Off Larry King
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:55 AM
I think she's been unfairly attacked. I think she's fighting for a good cause. And I think she's genuinely well-meaning. But her performance on Larry King was Sarah-Palin-on-Katie-Couric-esque.

Asking questions the interviewee isn't able to answer isn't at all "inappropriate." It's just annoying. There was no need to walk off the show at that point.

Health Care and the Constitution
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 10:20 AM
Guest blog post from Rob Schwarzwalder with the Family Research Council

Family Research Council has several critical concerns with the Democratic health care legislation under consideration on Capitol Hill.  The sanctity of human life, although safeguarded in the House version of the measure passed on Saturday, remains a live issue as the bill goes to the Senate.  Rationing, costs, patient control of medical decisions, an increase in the size and scope of Washington’s power: These and other matters animate FRC’s active opposition to the Democratic approach to revising our system of medical care.

But there is another issue that we have raised and will keep raising as the debate goes forward: The constitutionality of the Democratic plans.

When Speaker Nancy Pelosi was asked recently at the introduction of her mammoth health care “reform” bill if the measure was constitutional, the usually glib Californian was caught off-guard.  “Are you serious?” she asked.  And, a second time, “Are you serious?”  She then turned to another reporter without answering further.

At least House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer gives the Constitution a guilty nod.  He says that the “general welfare” clause gives Congress the right to pass a massive health care bill full of mandates on businesses and individuals and higher taxes for all.

Mark McKinnon: Bob McDonnell's Election Shows Card Check is a 'Huge Liability for Democrats'
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:59 AM
Yesterday I had the chance to chat with Mark McKinnon, a media expert and a former presidential adviser to George W. Bush and John McCain

After dispatching with out conversation about the circa-1970's Austin, Texas music scene, talk turned to card check.

McKinnon is advising The Workforce Fairness Institute, a group dedicated to educating Americans about the dangers of what they have dubbed, the "Employee 'Forced' Choice Act."

As you may recall, card check was a big issue a few months ago.  But, it seems, Democrats have warned big labor to back off the issue, at least, until health care reform is passed.  But make no mistake, the issue is dormant, not dead.

McKinnon pointed out to me that Bob McDonnell, who recently was elected governor of Virginia, focused on only  a few national issues, but card check was one of them.

As McDonnell said on FOX News's Hannity Show, "Some of the policies that this Congress has pursued and supported by the president like cap and trade and card check and tax increases ... I've made those issues in this race and I think Virginians are not enamored with those policies."

Pointing to the McDonnell victory, McKinnon described card check as, "a huge liability for Democrats."  The question, though, is whether or not Democrats will walk the plank in order to pay back big labor.  Clearly, this is a vitally important issue to watch, and I will continue monitoring it.

... On another note, I did have a chance to ask McKinnon about a recent controversial quote he gave the Washington Post, in which he appeared to disparage attendees of a "Taxpayer March" as, "right-wing nutballs."

McKinnon tells me the quote was taken out of context -- that his point was that the media would seek to interview only those attendees who were most on the fringe, in order to negatively portray mainstream conservative attendees.

Ironically, the Post seems to have made McKinnon's point by picking and choosing the most controversial of McKinnon's own quotes.  McKinnon tells me that he's been around long enough to know that he should have avoided giving them an opportunity to use his quotes out of context.

Obama and Fox News: Together Again?
Posted by: John Hanlon at 7:00 AM
As Meredith Jessup wrote last night, President Obama is planning to do an interview with Fox News' Major Garrett. Although this seems like a direct break in the administration's feud with the Fox News network, it is not a surprising development. It fits in perfectly with the private White House strategy reported in a Washington Post article that I blogged about last month.

The White House strategy, according to the Post, was to have Dunn (who was supposed to be at the White House short-term) directly attack Fox and then her departure "potentially gave the administration the opportunity to distance itself from the flap with the Roger Ailes-led news channel..." It was only a few days ago that it was announced that Dunn would be leaving the White House at the end of November. Now that Dunn is definitely out, the White House is more than eager to do an interview with Fox News, which could help end the feud and the discussion about it in the media.

The interview with Major Garrett will definitely be an interesing one. With major health care reform in the Congress and the American people still waiting on a decision about Afghanistan from the Commander in Chief, there are a lot of topics that Garrett should ask about in his alloted time.

Garrett should also make sure to ask President Obama about the White House's strategy to attack the news network so directly
while so many other pressing issues (including the high unemployment numbers) across this country did not garner the sort of attention they deserved.
