Puhleese!
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:22 PM
It may be over for us ...

"Nearly as many House Republicans sought to get their photos taken with Obama as questioned him about the stimulus during their meeting."

On a positive note, Newt Gingrich is opposing the stimulus package.

Stimulative Sex Ed
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 2:54 PM
Lookee what's on page 135 of the stimulus bill.
$335,000,000 shall be used as an additional amount to carry out domestic HIV/ AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis prevention programs.
Take on a whole other meaning when it's used in the context of sex ed. Easy fodder for the late night joke crew.

“Moral Equivalence” Distorts Jewish-Muslim “Tension”
Posted by: Michael Medved at 2:53 PM
National Public Radio recently provided a sickening demonstration of the “moral equivalence” blindness characterizing establishment media. Eleanor Beardsley reported on the “friction between Muslims and Jews in France,” home to Europe’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities. Her reporting suggested the two communities share blame for “tension” following the fighting in Gaza, never acknowledging the utterly one-sided nature of the hostility.

Four synagogues were recently attacked with Molotov cocktails in France, two Jews were shot by Muslims in Denmark, and Jewish citizens have suffered assaults in Sweden, Britain, Belgium and most European countries. Muslim communities, however, suffered no serious backlash from the Middle Eastern fighting.

Left-leaning media compare Israel, which seeks only to stop rocket attacks, with Hamas, that openly demands Israel’s annihilation. They also equate European Jews who want only peace with European Muslims who try to maim and murder Jews.

Stimulus Bill Carries $347B in Interest
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 2:08 PM
President Obama's $825 stimulus bill will rack up an incredible $347 billion in interest through 2019, according to new information from the Congressional Budget Office.

This information was released by the CBO in a letter response to Rep. Paul Ryan (R.-Wisc.) who requested the agency to score the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

CBO Director Douglas W. Elmendorf wrote Ryan "Under CBO's current economic assumptions and assuming that none of the direct budgetary effects of H.R. 1 are offset by future legislation, CBO estimates that the government's interest costs would increase by $0.7 bilion in fiscal year 2009 and by a totaly of $347 billion over the 2009-2019 period."

Stimulus Support Will Preclude Club for Growth Award
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:57 PM
In addition to Majority Leader John Boehner urging Republican Congressmen to vote against the stimulus, the powerful Club For Growth is also trying to pressure legislators to vote no.

In a press release this morning, The Club announced that any congressman who votes for the bill will be disqualified from receiving the Club's "Defender of Economic Freedom" Award in the year 2009.

The award usually goes to members of Congress who score above 90 on the Club's yearly scorecard, but in this case the stimulus vote will be weighted so heavily that it will be impossible for any "yes" voter to get the title.

The Club is one of the nation's top fiscal conservative organizations, and their endorsement matters a lot in Republican primaries...

Failing an "Early Test"?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:35 PM
Even Britain is refusing to take Guantanamo prisoners -- despite a personal plea from Barack Obama.

In what the UK Telegraph is calling "an early test of Europe's relationship with President Obama," the new President's charm is availing him of significantly less with European leaders than, say, with the American press.

Hold on a minute.  Didn't the Democrats promise that once nasty old George W. was gone, the world would embrace America again with open arms?  Weren't throngs of hundreds of thousands cheering candidate Obama last summer?  Wasn't one of the defining rationales for the Obama (and Clinton) candidacies the ability to work with the world again?

In his first televised interview -- with Al Arabiya television, no less -- President Obama declared that "all too often the United States starts by dictating."  That kind of humility, of course, is music to the ears of those who love nothing more than to see America humble -- better, humiliated.

Now, of course, President Obama isn't "dictating."  He has asked the Europeans sweetly to take the Guantanamo refugees.  And we can see where that has gotten all of us.

Imagine the press reaction if someone less dearly beloved by the MSM had (1) announced plans to close a terrorist prison without a plan about where to relocate the terrorists  and (2) had gotten a finger in the eye even from England, the US's closest ally.  The screaming would echo all the way to Cuba.

Stimulating Universal Healthcare
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 12:24 PM
Universal healthcare is going to get a big boost from the $825 billion stimulus bill if it passes in current form.

$600 million is allocated on page 50 of the bill to double funding to pay doctors and nurses employed by the National Health Services Corps. The bill states: "A key component of attaining universal health care reform will be ensuring the supply of primary health care providers family medicine, internal medicine, pediatricians, dentists, and nurses."

And, as written today, the bill gives billions to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Daschle's to conduct "comparative medical research" and issue a final report.

Under the bill univeral health care advocate Daschle would receive $400 million to compare various medial treatments. The language, on page 135 of the bill, says it would fund "conduct, support, or synthesize research that compares the clinical outcomes, effectiveness, and appropriateness of items, services, and procedures that are used to prevent, diagnose, or treat diseases, disorders, and other health conditions; and encourage the development and use of clinical registries, clinical data networks, and other forms of electronic health data that can be used to generate or obtain outcomes data."

In other words, his job would be to find out what medical practices work and which ones don't.

Daschle would receive another $1.5 billion to give a final report to President Obama "containing information describing Federal activities on comparative effectiveness research and recommendations for additional investments in such research."

In his recent book on health care, Daschle said these steps would be essential in creating an universal health care program. Billions more have been allocated to the Secretary to develop a government database to store medical records on.

“In an ideal world,” Daschle wrote in his book "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health Care Crisis, “the staff would have access to privacy-protected electronic health records data to use to identify what works and what doesn’t.”

If you are interested in examining this information please read pages 135-150 of the bill, available HERE, which discusses stimulus funding for HHS.

Boehner Urges GOP Members to Vote Against Stimulus
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:43 AM
While there's a big difference between "urging" members to vote no and "whipping" them to vote no, we should at least give John Boehner kudos for urging Republicans to vote against this ridiculous "stimulus" bill

If Republicans ever hope to regain the mantle of fiscal conservatism, it is vital that this bill not be seen as a "bi-partisan" effort -- which would make both Republicans and Democrats responsible when it predictably fails...

Morning Rant
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:37 AM

Having sworn-off "Morning Joe" for the last couple of weeks heading into the election, I am slowly creeping back to my morning addiction.  But I continue to have very mixed emotions about the direction of the show -- mainly stemming from the odd choice of regulars...

Joe, Mika, Willie, and Pat Buchanan are almost always terrific -- from an entertainment standpoint (I obviously don't always agree with them on issues).

Recently, however, they have had this CNBC guy Dylan Ratigan on constantly.  He is, perhaps, even slightly more annoying and egotistical than Mike Barnicle.  They are also fond of having the maudlin Peggy Noonan on -- and she clearly is the most annoying person in the world, probably because she is portrayed as a conservative. Oh yeah, and then there is Eugene Robinson...

The show was at its best when Scarborough, Mika, and Willie were frequently joined by interesting high-caliber guests like Tim Russert (a sad loss, indeed), Pat Buchanan, David Schuster, and Tucker Carlson

Why do I care?  Because this show has great potential, but they are in danger of ruining it by continuing to juggle the cast of characters, and even worse: by bringing in the wrong people.

... And it's frustrating to watch this happen -- it's like watching  Ted McGinley ruin every show from the 70s and 80s (see Love Boat, Happy Days, Married with Children) -- or like when TV shows in the 70s and 80s tried to revitalize themselves by adding a cute kid (see that John Denver-looking kid on the Brady Bunch, Sam on Diff'rent Strokes, or whoever that was on Married with Children, etc.)...

My advice to Morning Joe -- for what it is worth -- is to ditch Barnicle and Ratigan as soon as possible.  They are clearly not ready for morning time.

Am I alone here???

Did Obama Just Sign The Death Warrant For American Automakers?
Posted by: John Hawkins at 8:22 AM
Most Americans have no idea, none at all, of how much the government has to do with creating economic disasters for our country. For example, take a look at the auto industry. Because the Democratic Party is heavily supported by unions, they've paid them back by writing the laws in such a way that unions are allowed to bend their employers over a barrel and have their way with them at will. No matter how stupid, intractable, lazy, or overpaid union members become or how much money they cost, the Big 3 automakers can't say, "Screw it, you're fired, and we'll just train other people to replace you." Because of the cost of salaries, benefits, and payments to retired union workers that the Big 3 have to pay, they're simply not able to compete with foreign car companies. Do keep in mind that we have foreign companies coming to the United States, paying a fantastic wage to their employees, beating the Big 3's brains in, and managing to make a profit. So, it's not that it can't be done, it's that the cost imposed by unions on the Big 3 are making it impossible for those companies to adapt to the changing marketplace. That's one of the biggest reasons why the Big 3 makes so many big gas guzzlers: because they can sell them for more money and help offset the enormous union costs that have been imposed on them. However, after decades of having the Democrats beat their brains in on the labor side, now Barack Obama has just cut the throats of America's car companies on the other side as well,
Automakers said Monday that they were working toward President Obama's goal of reducing fuel consumption, but rapid imposition of stricter emissions standards could force them to drastically cut production of larger, more profitable vehicles, adding to their financial duress. Mr. Obama ordered the government on Monday to reconsider whether California and other states could regulate vehicle emissions to help control greenhouse gas emissions, a reversal of a position taken by the Bush administration. The announcement came as General Motors and Chrysler are borrowing billions of dollars from the government to avoid bankruptcy, and as Toyota prepares to report its first operating loss in 70 years. Shortly after the president spoke, General Motors said it would cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio because of slow sales. The California regulations, if enacted today, "would basically kill the industry," said David E. Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, an independent research organization in Ann Arbor, Mich. "It would have a devastating effect on everybody, and not just the domestics." But Mr. Cole said he thought major modifications to the proposed standards were likely and that action was still "a long ways off," giving the carmakers more time to overcome their financial problems and develop the technologies needed to sell a full lineup of compliant vehicles. Right now, carmakers say they would be able to sell only their smallest, most fuel-efficient cars -- models like the Toyota Prius, a hybrid whose sales have fallen sharply since gas prices began dropping last fall -- because once-popular vehicles like pickup trucks made by Ford and G.M. are not efficient enough.
Of course, to Democrats, there is an obvious solution to all of this -- support their union allies by allowing them to loot the Big 3, support their environmental extremist allies with these new emissions standards, and then keep the whole sorry mess afloat with tens of billions in tax payer dollars. Then, nobody but the taxpayers get screwed, but with the help of their allies in the media, they'll figure out some way to blame that on Republicans. Don't laugh -- that's a viable strategy -- at least it will be if Republicans don't smarten up, call them out on what they're doing, and refuse to spend one more dime of the American public's money to prop up the Democrats' union allies. GOP Rallies Activists Against Stimulus Spending
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 8:23 PM
More than 2,600 anti-spending activists phoned in to speak with Republican Reps. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) and Tom Price (Ga.) about their concerns over President Obama's $825 billion stimulus billl Monday evening.

Americans for Prosperity hosted the call to allow their members to connect with Bachmann and Price, two members who have repeatedly stood up for taxpayers by voting against reckless spending in Washington. AFP created the site www.nostimulus.com to draw attention to specific complaints.

"This is a red hot issue," said Bachmann. "The Democrats are planning to slam this $825 billon so-called stimulus package. It's really a tax and spend package where we are borrowing from the next generation to pay for the party we are having today."

Price, who was recently named Republican Study Committee Chairman, reminded listeners of the recent bailout packages Congress has passed for the housing industries and Wall Street. "If borrowing and spending would have stopped this challenging problem we have in this economy it would have stopped because we have borrowed and spent to an incredible limit."

Bachmann urged listeners to visit AFP's website and tell their members of Congress not to vote for the bill. "Trust me, they get skittish when their phones start ringing off the hook," she said. "We need you to literally melt the phone lines and tell them 'do not vote for the stimulus plan.'"

Democrat Bipartisanship at its Best
Posted by: Michele Bachmann at 5:42 PM
Last Friday, the House Ways and Means Committee concluded their markup of H.R. 598, the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan. Here's what Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had to say about it:

"This week, the Appropriations, Ways and Means, and Energy and Commerce Committees held markups on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to include important feedback from Members to improve the package."

If you were to take his words at face value, you'd think that the resulting bill is a remarkable example of bipartisanship and mutual give and take between the parties. However, the facts tell a different story.

Only 1 of 18 Republican Amendments that were offered as part of the stimulus package were accepted by the majority. What happened to the rest? REJECTED… WITH ONLY ONE DEMOCRAT supporting ONLY ONE of the remaining 17 measures.

This blatant lack of bipartisanship combined with new restrictive rules put in place by the Democrat majority to silence the Republicans is why my office is launching a new blog called the Majority Tracker. With the Democrats in control of Washington, it’s vital that the Republican minority not only present its own alternatives, but that Americans know what those alternatives are. The goal of the blog is to serve as a one-stop-shop for bloggers, reporters, and constituents to get the whole story of what’s taking place in the U.S. House of Representatives.

For more information on the 18 Republican amendments to the Democrats' stimulus package and for detailed accounts of what's happened in the House since the start of the 111th Congress, check out the Majority Tracker.

Telephone Conference with Bachmann, Price
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 4:45 PM
Townhall blogger and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R.-Minn) will be participating in a telephone conference with Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Tom Price (R.-Ga.) this evening hosted by Americans for Prosperity.

They'll be available to talk to YOU about the forthcoming stimulus bill.

Want to call in? I've got the code for you!

Here are the details:

When: Monday, January 26th at 8:15pm EST
Phone number to call: 1-877-229-8493

When you phone in, you'll be asked to provide a pin number. It's: 13896

Here's some of the other info on the call AFP blasted out:
You've seen the coverage of the approximately $1 trillion debt scheme pushed by Speaker Pelosi and President Obama that's being called the "Stimulus Package."

Sadly, many politicians in Washington, DC really believe that driving our nation even deeper into debt and using our money for wasteful government spending boondoggles is the way to get us out of the current recession.

Representative Price and Bachmann are two of the few political leaders that realize that the massive deficits, higher taxes, wasteful spending and heavy-handed regulation are primary reasons for the current recession.

Please join us at for this FREE Americans for Prosperity telephone town hall.

If you can't make the call, please make sure to visit www.NoStimulus.com and join the growing army of taxpayers saying NO by signing Americans for Prosperity’s petition to stop this disastrous trillion-dollar debt scheme, known as the “Stimulus Package.”
