Cap and Trade Bill Hits MN the Hardest
Posted by: Michele Bachmann at 11:55 AM
During the first week of June, the U.S. Senate is scheduled to consider Cap and Trade legislation - more aptly called Tax and Trade legislation. Here are some pretty depressing stats to consider should this bill become law. Be sure to click on the links for details. The bottom line:  this is bad news for Minnesota.

According to The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis Report on the Cap and Trade bill (S. 2191), Minnesota would lead the nation in per-capita job loss should this legislation become law. Across the country, the already hard hit manufacturing sector of our economy would lose millions more jobs. Household energy costs would rise dramatically, and household income would decline.

What is cap and trade? In this case, the federal government would impose arbitrary limits on six emission gases, with the primary emphasis on carbon dioxide. In order to cap these emissions, the government would sell permits to power plants, refineries, and natural gas producers, which will be passed along in the form of increased energy costs to consumers (much like an energy tax). It will lead to large transfers of income from people in Minnesota to special interests in Washington.

How much will it cost you? When S. 2191 is fully implemented in Minnesota, the average household would see energy costs rise by $823 more per year in 2025 because of this legislation. The increase in the average electric bill would be at least 80% more than under current law, and the average natural gas bill increase would be at least 37% over current projections if S. 2191 becomes law.

Moreover, according to the Heritage analysis, the trade-off for the damage this Tax and Trade bill would do to the economy is "...very little change in global temperature...perhaps even smaller than the .07 of a degree Celsius drop in temperature that many scientisits expected from worldwide compliance with the Kyoto climate change accords."

It's a Cultural Disconnect
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 11:53 AM
Writing today in the Wall Street Journal, David Boaz makes a telling point: In his praise for "collective service" voiced in a commencement address, Barack neglected to include either private enterprise or the military.

The latter, it goes without saying, is one of the only indispensable forms of public service in a free country.  But so is the former -- among other reasons, it's the engine that produces the tax revenues that allow those engaged in "collective service" to "help" others through redistributing this income.

I'm not a fan of "collective" anything -- especially collectivist economics.  And Boaz is right to criticize John McCain's attacks on Mitt Romney's business background.  But I can understand a politician who sees military service as the apex of public service much better than one who ignores it altogether.

It strikes me as telling -- and disturbing -- that Barack apparently doesn't see the private sector or the military as a "virtuous" career choice on par with the "softer" forms of government service.  Perhaps in academic circles, it isn't.

No Protests Say Obama Supporters
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 10:52 AM
The Obama campaign is instructing their supporters NOT to protest the Democratic National Committee meeting to determine how to count delegates from Michigan and Florida. Meanwhile, the Hillary camp is bussing people in to march in her favor.

I've got the story up HERE.

When a Sex Scandal Helps You...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:51 AM
... Speaking of Roger Stone, Politics 1 reports this:

How interested is Florida Governor Charlie Crist in being John McCain's VP runningmate? So much so that veteran GOP dirty trickster Roger Stone -- who coordinated a few dirty stunts in support of Crist during the 2006 gubernatorial campaign -- is quietly peddling a so-called "Charlie Crist sex tape." That's what Stone called it during a telephone conversation. And no, it is not a tape of Crist having sex with a guy. In fact, it isn't even X-rated. The video was seemingly staged to kill the rumors that Crist is gay. Stone claims the tape -- which he discussed recently with Politics1, but didn't show to us ("I'm saving it for the national shows") -- "shows Charlie fooling around in a hotel elevator with his girlfriend ... They're making out." Adds Stone: "It was captured on a security camera in the elevator" last month. And Stone just conveniently happens to have a copy of the hotel's elevator surveillance tape, just when Crist's name is in play for the VP spot. Hmm. As for Crist's purported girlfriend -- presuming it is the same one he took as his date to the White House Correspondents Dinner in DC a few weeks ago -- she's still married (and not to Crist). Disclaimer: Always be skeptical of anything from Stone.

Scott McClellan's Opportunistic Book
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:27 AM
Former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan -- easily the least effective of Bush's spokesmen -- has written a book that bashes Bush.

Whatever his other faults, clearly, Bush is guilty of is surrounding himself with too many staffers and advisers like McClellan.

Bush's legacy has been badly damaged by his staffing decisions, which included too many "loyal" Texans, too many liberals, and too many light-weights.

In this case, McClellan fits all three categories.

A Candidate Worth Supporting
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:16 PM
One often hears Republicans bemoaning the relative scarcity of women willing to run for office under the GOP banner.  Perhaps that means that when a superbly qualified candidate who happens to be a woman emerges, it's worth offering our support.

Gabriella Holt is running for the California State Assembly.  We became acquainted here in the Golden State through our mutual interest in politics, and she'd be a wonderful addition to a state legislature badly in need of some common sense and intelligence.  Gabriella is a registered nurse and has been an elected member of her school board for eight years.

Although I generally wouldn't write about a state race here, Gabriella is exactly the kind of woman that Republicans should be recruiting and supporting if they want to erase the edge that Democrats now enjoy among women.

Here is Gabriella's web site.

Talking Ourselves Into Recession
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:12 PM
As this new report from the Business and Media Institute notes, the MSM's coverage of the economy has been more apocalyptic than news reports before the Great Depression (HT: emailer Dave).

Does anyone think that's a coincidence in an election year, when a crisis atmosphere will redound to the benefit of Democrats -- and, in particular, the presidential candidate who's supposedly the personification of "change"?

Last Word on Hillary's RFK Gaffe ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:13 PM
Keith Olberman had this to say about Hillary's unfortunate RFK reference last Friday:
"You actually invoked the nightmare of political assassination? You actually invoked the specter of an inspirational leader at the seeming moment of triumph for himself and a battered nation, yearning to breathe free, silenced forever?

"You actually use the word 'assassination' in the middle of a campaign with a loud undertone of racial hatred and gender hatred and political hatred? You actually use the word 'assassination' in a time when there is a fear, unspoken but vivid and terrible, that our again troubled land and fractured political landscape might target a black man running for President? Or a white man? Or a white woman?"
... As usual, Olberman and I see things completely differently.  Granted, it was an unfortunate comment -- but not an intentionally malicious one.  I was on Fox yesterday talking about the gaffe.  Here's my take, which I believe is more daresay "fair and balanced":

Memo to Self: Attack Ridge

Marc Ambinder chimes in on the anti-Crist movement:

"If social conservatives want to worry about a pro-choicer on the ticket, they should worry about McCain-Ridge, not McCain-Crist."

About Obama's Uncle
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 4:22 PM
There's another hole in Obama's story about his WWII vet uncle.

Fox News points out Obama's mother was an only child. They're waiting for clarification.

Update: Now the RNC is sinking its teeth into the story.  This statement comes from RNC spokeswoman Liz Mair: “Barack Obama owes the American public an explanation in light of his statement yesterday regarding his uncle and the liberation of Auschwitz.  It is a well-known fact that Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz.  Unless Obama’s uncle served in the Red Army, his statement looks nothing short of fatuous—and Americans expect something better than exaggerations and outright distortions from a candidate who hopes to become our next Commander in Chief."

Update: Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton says Obama has a great uncle who helped liberate a different war camp. Burton said Obama’s great uncle on his mother’s side was a member of the 89th Infantry Division that liberated Ohrduf in 1945.

Update 2: The Obama campaign now names the uncle in question as Charlie Payne and says Payne did not liberate Auschwitz, or Ohrduh, but Buchenwald.

If Only Everyone Had a Tony Rezko

Obama just gave a speech on homeownership.  It is interesting that the fellow who got his house thanks to Tony Rezko's sweetheart deal is putting the issue of protecting homeownership front and center in today’s campaigning …
