What About a "Debt" of Gratitude?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:20 PM
For some time, Michelle Obama has been wont to complain about the crushing debts she and her husband incurred for their educations (at Princeton/Harvard Law School and Columbia/Harvard Law School, respectively).

Set aside for a minute the fact that the type of elite schools the Obamas attended have long had "need blind admissions" -- that is, the schools accept students without regard to ability to pay, and commit to helping them find a way to afford to attend.  That fact alone speaks volumes about the commitment to meritocracy and equality in this country.

Even so, Michelle Obama has neglected to mention some very relevant changes affecting bright young students like she and Barack were.  Since 2001, her alma mater, Princeton, has had a no-loan policy -- that is, the educations of those who can't pay are subsidized entirely by grants, so that they incur no debt upon graduation. Similarly, Harvard Law School (of which both Obamas are alums) has recently announced that it will waive the third-year tuition ENTIRELY for students who pledge to work in nonprofit jobs for five years after graduation.  Other elite universities are following suit.

Given the increasingly generous assistance that students at Ivy League universities are receiving -- and the remarkable efforts Princeton and Harvard have made --  it's a little ungracious and a little disingenuous for Mrs. Obama to continue to bemoan the debts being shouldered by young graduates pining for public service work, like she and her husband once were. (Incidentally, it's also interesting -- and perhaps revealing -- that undergirding her complaints is the assumption that everyone should be entitled to attend the best universities in the country without paying.)

Finally, it's worth considering for a moment some of what enables the universities to be so generous.  Has Mrs. Obama ever appreciated the role that annual giving (donations, in large part, by the rich white males routinely derided by the radical chic on elite campuses) has played in making her life -- and the lives of those coming after her -- so much easier?

Strikes me that, rather than complaining, Mrs. Obama owes more than a few debts of gratitude -- and they're apparently in arrears.

The Emerging "No Fire In the Belly?" Meme
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 4:30 PM
Jim Geraghty takes note of Chris Bowers' concern that Hillary is out-hustling Barack..  Meanwhile, over at The Hill's blog, AB Stoddard similarly discusses Barack's "subdued posture" and supposed air of boredom with the campaign.

It's a careful tightrope presidential candidates must walk.  As I noted earlier in this post about Michelle Obama, voters want a candidate who's willing to get out there and actively seeking their support (and who presumably, feels grateful to have it) -- not one who acts like he's making a "sacrifice" to campaign for the most powerful job in the world.

On the other hand, an air of neediness and desperation to hold the office is never attractive either -- a fact that partly explains both Gov. George W. Bush's defeat of Al Gore, and the unattractiveness of both Clintons' obvious obsession with the attainment (and maintenance) of political power.

Could this "fire in the belly" meme simply be a symptom of the way Obama's behavior is currently being construed -- that is, the same behavior that was so darned cool and appealing when he was on top is being interpreted as problematic now that he's hit a political rough patch?

Huckabee: Obama's Former Pastor Needs Him to Lose
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:27 PM
Interesting quote from Huckabee ....

"Former Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Wednesday Barack Obama's bid for the White House is not being derailed because he is black, but because his former pastor does not want him to show the country's race relations have progressed.

Obama, a Democrat, has struggled in recent weeks to distance himself from incendiary comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"His (Obama's) campaign is not being derailed by his race, it's being derailed by a person who doesn't want him to prove that we have made great advances in this country," Huckabee told reporters.

... "Jeremiah Wright needs for Obama to lose so he can justify his anger, his hostile bitterness against the United States of America," Huckabee said."
(Emphasis mine).

A Front Page Story

A good way to judge how much a story is resonating outside the beltway is to check out the local newspapers.  I'm not talking about online, either.  Marc Ambinder has scanned-in some NC newspapers that give you a good idea just how the Rev. Wright story continues to dog Obama.

Training for Conservatives
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:27 PM
There are two excellent opportunities coming up for conservatives who want to be more effective:

If you're interested in the internet and politics, MKH, Ruffini, and I (among others) will be speaking at the Leadership Institute's Internet Activist School, May 9-10.

In other training news, learn how to craft, produce, and distribute professional documentaries at The Leadership Institute’s new Documentary Workshop which will be held in conjunction with the GI Film Festival on May 16.

Hillary: The Resilient Lady in Pink Enters the Zone
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:15 PM

Doug Heye thinks only Hill could have met up with Bill:
Except those hoping to see Clinton fail, liberals and progressives most likely did not tune in. Of North Carolina Democrats watching last night’s interview, many are those suffering from buyer’s remorse on Obama. They are votes she desperately needs.

By appearing on The O’Reilly Factor, the state’s most-watched news program, Clinton is sending a message to voters throughout eastern North Carolina.

She demonstrated a willingness to enter the “lion’s den” and not back down under aggressive questioning — the Sunday shows are tough, but unlikely to overtly accuse Clinton of waffling, misleading, or wanting to bankrupt the country. Prior to last night, it’s doubtful she had heard the word “bupkis” in an interview.
My favorite moment: "You know you're gonna bankrupt the country with health care, right?" Overall, it was a friendly, feisty, interesting interview in which she seemed in control and even kind of funny at times. Her quip about Moses being able to help with health care was pretty funny. Could she be...likeable?

Will it make a difference in North Carolina? Things are clearly swinging her way (10 points since Wright's Q&A), and appearing on the state's most-watched news show, during which she made no noticeable gaffes, can't be a bad thing. "I learned a lesson from Ronald Reagan," wasn't a bad touch, either, although shouldn't she have to answer for calling him a "great American politician" after slapping Obama repeatedly for admiring Reagan's ability to change the direction of the country?

Her policies are liberal, and people will see that, but many North Carolina Democrats are blue-collar ones with reservations about free trade, gas prices, and oil company profits, so her bread-and-butter sell is not a bad one. Taking oil profits simply because she think they're too high and health-care mandates may have been bridges a bit too far, but that's who she is.

In other Hillary news, she'd totally date a Republican:

The question: "If your husband gave you a pass for one night and you could go on a date with any celeb, alive or dead, who would it be?"

Clinton's answer: "That's such a dangerous question! How about Abraham Lincoln?"

She also hasn't had any work done, apparently. I want to know who the reporter is who asked her who'd she'd cheat on her husband with and whether she'd had a facelift. (Update: People Magazine asked the first one.) Now, that's testicular fortitude.

She's got Gov. Easley of N.C. starring in ad for her, calling her "determined" and "resilient," which I'm inclined to believe considering she doesn't know what Red Bull is and can't work a coffee machine, yet campaigns 18 hours a day. She's superhuman!

Is Anyone Surprised?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:08 PM
Today we learn that Miley Cyrus is a big fan of "Sex and the City" -- a show with an oh-so-distinguished pedigree.  After all, it's the program that shaped Lindsay Lohan's "dating philosophy."

Cyrus' allegiance to SATC hardly makes her unique among young girls.  As a psychologist pointed out in this New York Times piece way back in 2002, "the habits of 'Sex and the City'-style dating have trickled down to teenagers: think of Samantha at 14, not at 40."

Michelle Obama on CNN
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 11:58 AM
Last night, while Hillary was on the O'Reilly Factor, CNN tried a little counterprogramming, featuring an interview with Michelle Obama -- Caroline Kennedy by her side.

Not much of note emerged, although one does get the strong impression that Mrs. Obama is not a "happy warrior."  And it's worth pointing out that she talked repeatedly of the "sacrifice" that his running for the presidency entailed for both her and Barack.

A little free advice: Best not to keep on implicitly soliciting the gratitude of the American people for your presence in the race.  After all, everybody knows that Hillary Clinton doesn't consider any of this a sacrifice -- she lives for this stuff.

One of the smartest politicians I know (who's held a variety of high offices) once told me that it was important for candidates explicitly to ask for voters' votes.  I think that's right; people want to feel as though they're bestowing something of value on a candidate by virtue of supporting him/her -- not that they're the (presumably grateful) recipients of a candidate's noblesse oblige and "sacrifice."

Could Hillary Actually Win North Carolina?
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 11:37 AM

Matt Towery's Southern Political Report says it's possible given his polling firm's latest survey results.

A survey of 571 registered likely voters in North Carolina’s May 6 Democratic primary shows Sen. Hillary Clinton having moved from a double digit deficit in an InsiderAdvantage poll taken in mid-April to a two point lead over Sen. Barack Obama in this telephone survey, conducted April 29. The survey was weighted for age, race, gender, and political affiliation. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%

The results were:

Hillary Clinton: 44%
Barack Obama: 42%
Undecided: 14%

Another Judas
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 11:22 AM
Former DNC Chairman Joe Andrew is abandoning Hillary for Barack.

Andrews, a superdelegate, originally endorsed Hillary last November but announced today he thinks Barack is a better candidate to win the general election.

In an open letter Andrew writes:
My endorsement of Senator Obama will not be welcome news to my friends and family at the Clinton campaign. If the campaign's surrogates called Governor Bill Richardson, a respected former member of President Clinton's cabinet, a "Judas" for endorsing Senator Obama, we can all imagine how they will treat somebody like me. They are the best practitioners of the old politics, so they will no doubt call me a traitor, an opportunist and a hypocrite. I will be branded as disloyal, power-hungry, but most importantly, they will use the exact words that Republicans used to attack me when I was defending President Clinton.
Update: This part of his letter took me aback. It implies the Republican party discriminates on race, gender and religion. Read it for yourself:
The difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party is that you are always welcome in the Democratic Party.

Because Democrats don’t care if you are black or white or brown or a nice shade of green, you are welcome in the Democratic Party.

We don’t care if you pray in a church or a synagogue or a temple or a mosque, or just before math tests, you are welcome in the Democratic Party.

We don’t care if you are young or old, or just don’t want to tell your age, you are welcome in the Democratic Party.

We don’t care what gender you are, or what gender you want to hold hands with; as long as you want to hold hands, you are welcome in the Democratic Party.

We don’t care about the size of your bank account, just the size of your heart; and we don’t care where you are today, just where you dream you want to be tomorrow.

That is your Democratic Party. That is Barack Obama's Democratic Party. That is the Party that will win in November.

The Pelosi Premium
Posted by: John Campbell at 10:30 AM

Almost two years ago to the day, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), announced that she had a “commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices (Release 4/24/06)”.

With gas prices hovering precariously close to $4 a gallon, I can’t help but wonder when this commonsense plan is going to show up.  Despite the elaborate rhetoric Speaker Pelosi has fed to the American people, she doesn’t really have a “commonsense plan” to bring gas prices down.  In fact since January of 2007, when Democrats took control of Congress, the price of gas was $2.33; today the average price of gas is $3.62.  A $1.29 increase is just over a year.  That is a 55% increase since the beginning of the 110th Congress.

Pelosi’s leadership has resulted in the handcuffing of domestic energy exploration and now the powerful Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce wants to impose a 50 cent tax increase per gallon in order to discourage consumption of gasoline.

Is the premium of Pelosi's leadership really worth it?

Fred Returns for McCain
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:20 AM
Fred's back on the trail:
In recent weeks, McCain has campaigned with both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. While there was a lot of VP buzz when the AZ Senator was joined by Romney and Huckabee, expect a lot less around Fred—the former TN Senator even told Fox News last week that a number 2 slot is “not in the cards.”
