At This Point I would Settle for Nothing
Posted by: John Campbell at 1:45 PM

Last November I wrote to you about the evidence that this Congress is the Least Productive Congress…ever. My argument continues to sustain itself.

Amidst a myriad of national issues, House Democrats have actively refused to bring anything substantive to the attention of the House of Representatives.

Gas prices are teetering at $4 per gallon, there are food shortages both at home and abroad, House Democrats have left our intelligence professionals without the ability to quickly intercept communications from foreign terrorists, and Democrats are still trying to compromise on a clean farm bill free from extraneous additions.

This week some of the most important legislation that reached the House floor included: Promoting the safe operation of 15-passenger vans, expressing support for designation of March 11, 2008, as "National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day,” and Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that there should be established a National Watermelon Month.

Passenger vans, funeral director day, and watermelon month, I take it back….this is the do less than nothing Congress.

Conservatives Stand Up for TV Ministries
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:35 PM
A group of Christian and conservative orginizations (including the Christian Anti-Defamation League and the 60 Plus Association), as well as conservative leaders (including Paul Weyrich, Ken Blackwell, and Star Parker), are concerned about the Senate Finance Committee's probe into the records of television ministries.

They signed the following letter, which was delivered to committee members this afternoon:

United States Congress

U.S. Capitol

Washington, DC 20002

May 2, 2008

Dear Senate Finance Committee Member:

We write respectfully to let you know of our concerns about the Senate Finance Committee’s investigation into the finances of several churches, all of which share the same branch of evangelicalism, and all of which promote socially conservative public policy positions such as support for the traditional definition of marriage.

While we recognize that some evangelical teachings and socially conservative policy positions are controversial, and that these churches have been the subject of sensational investigative journalism, we are nonetheless concerned that this would possibly justify an investigation outside the normal confines of the Internal Revenue Service and established administrative and judicial procedures.

The Un-doctored Version ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:24 PM
Here's the un-doctored version of the War Room footage (compare it to the controversial version that was apparently bogus). The scene-in-question is about half way in. It's hard to make-out what is actually being said. Where's that lip-reading expert who dated George Castanza Jerry Seinfeld when you need her??? ...

... So now comes the question ... Was this a "lone-wolf" Obama supporter who made this? Or was it the Obama campaign attempting a sleazy roorback? ... Or is it this more devious: The Clinton folks setting up Obama by planting an obviously bogus attack against themselves?

Oil Companies' "Obscene" Profits
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:14 PM
With gas prices at record highs, it's tempting to want to inflict on oil companies the same kind of pain we're feeling at the pump.  But  Investors' Business Daily explains why the political demagoguery about the "obscene" profits of the oil companies is so misguided.  Here's a snippet:

Our free-market economy is built on profit. Higher profits mean more jobs, higher incomes, more investment in equipment and people, higher standards of living. Yes, profits are the engine for all of this — and that includes the profits of "Big Oil."

By signaling that supply is scarce, higher profits encourage more production. Except, that is, when Congress through its inept lawmaking stands in the way. And that's the case now with the oil industry.

What's more:

Truth is, oil industry profits are in line with the rest of American industry. In 2007, a record year, they earned 8.3 cents per dollar of sales. Beverage companies and cigarette makers, by contrast, earned 19.1 cents. Drug makers, 18.4 cents. Indeed, all manufacturers, 8.9 cents on average, made more than "Big Oil."

Besides, we've tried windfall profits taxes before, in the early 1980s, and they were an utter failure.  . . .

Remember: Oil companies don't really pay "windfall profit" taxes, anyway. You do.

There's much more.  The whole thing is a must-read.

Dubai Ports Redux? Conservatives Question Outsourcing Plane Production
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:11 PM

A national defense story with the potential to arouse the same level of angst we saw during the Dubai Port’s scandal has gone largely unnoticed.

The Defense Department’s has awarded a $35 billion contract to build America’s newest fleet of air tankers to the French owned European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS).

While Boeing (who stands to lose billions), obviously objects to the deal, several conservative leaders and organizations are also expressing concern about the national security issues at play.

While the Defense Department changed its own rules to accommodate this deal, the more salient issue is one of national security:  specifically, whether or not we should be outsourcing our national defense.  Many of the European countries controlling and subsidizing EADS were knee deep in the Oil for Food Scandal and working with the Iraqi regime.  Then there are also concerns about the strategic partnerships some of these nations like France have with Iran as well.

Just as was the case with the Dubai story, conservative opinion is split.  Some conservatives argue outsourcing is a good thing that will save taxpayer dollars, and get the equipment in the hands of our soldiers more quickly.  A recent Wall Street Journal op-ed even portrayed the desire to build America’s airplanes in the U.S. as a liberal or “protectionist” argument.

But several other leading conservatives, including Frank Gaffney, Phyllis Schlafley, and Paul Weyrich – just to name a few – have organized a lobbying campaign aimed at encouraging Members of Congress to provide oversight through the Congressional budget office to stop this deal from proceeding.

This is a story I’ll be keeping an eye on …

Learning a Life Lesson?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 11:55 AM
Below, Michael Medved observes that "[Barack's] startling inability to work with his own former pastor to prevent serious damage to his campaign hardly inspires confidence in his capacity to unite Democrats, deal with a fractious Congress, or cope with foreign powers."

True enough; but what Obama may not have realized until now is that it's, in fact, impossible to "work with" his former "spiritual advisor" -- because Wright is simply a nut.

Could this entire episode be a valuable lesson to a candidate who seems to cherish boundless optimism about the power of sweet reason to win over our adversaries in the world?  In other words, might Barack be learning that there are some people out there who simply aren't rational -- and from that, getting the sense that "sitting down" with such people isn't likely to achieve anything but a propaganda coup for them?

Clinton Adviser Called Indiana Voters 'White N***ers' in '92 (Update: Doctored Video?)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:50 AM
More class from the Left.

Here's Mickey Kantor, on video, in 1992: "Look at Indiana - 42-40. It doesn't matter if we win; those people are shit. How would you like to be a worthless white ni***r?"

somesome

He's speaking to James Carville and George Stephanopoulos, and clearly knows he's being taped. He even lowers his voice to say "white n***er" indicating he knows dang well he shouldn't be saying it, but he's going to anyway. The contempt cup runneth over with the Dems. I've always said that Republicans' distinct advantage in running campaigns is that fewer of them have to pretend to like normal Americans than on the Dem side.

Michelle Malkin:
It’s 16 years old and Kantor plays a nominal advisor role in the Hillary ‘08 campaign. But hey, whomever’s behind it and however old it is, it’s an always welcome reminder that both Democrat presidential candidates’ camps share cynical contempt for the bitter, clingy, God-fearing, gun-toting voters in flyover country. Not news to the rest of us.
Ed Morrissey:
This isn’t quite as bad as Obama’s comments in San Francisco in a couple of respects. Hillary isn’t saying this, and it was 16 years ago, not six weeks ago. However, the disgust for the white working class comes through much more clearly in this video, and the fact that it comes from a former Clinton Cabinet official and current adviser makes it all the more compelling.
The Obama-supporting Left blogs are running with it, big-time.
Oh, and before anyone says this was a long time ago, it was only a few years before Obama went to Ayers' home - same decade - so it's just as relevant. Also, imagine had an Obama adviser made these comments? It would be a media firestorm. This is also relevant since Hillary continues to associate with this man for 13 years following his offensive remarks. What's that say about her character? (Personally, I'd have left that church a long time ago.) Not to mention, I'm not sure what the statute of limitations in politics is for using the N-word. The Indiana primary is Tuesday.
It's less revealing about Hillary than Obama's comment about rural Americans, which came from the candidate's own mouth, but it is rather distasteful to hire on as an adviser someone who doesn't mind using the n-word, even while he knows he's on camera. Moral considerations aside, I wouldn't want that guy advising me on anything.

Update:
So says Ben Smith, who talked to the "War Room" documentary director, which is the film from which this looks to have come.

I just spoke to D.A. Pennebaker, the director of "The War Room," who said his film had been doctored to produce a widely-viewed YouTube clip.

In a clip from his film on the 1992 Clinton campaign, posted to YouTube today, Clinton advisor Mickey Kantor is -- according to subtitles -- seen referring to Indianans with an expletive and to his colleague George Stephanopolous with a racial slur.

"He does not say that. He does not say that," said Pennebaker, after viewing the clip.

He said the initial expletive referred to the anticipated reaction in the Bush White House to the fact that Ross Perot's polling numbers were holding strong.

"What he says is he’s surprised Perot’s numbers are holding," said Pennebaker in a brief phone interview. "He says they must be shi**ing in the White House."

The second expletive, he said, appeared to have been entirely fabricated, with new audio dubbed onto the original movie.

Well, that would be some dirty trick.

Old Video Footage Haunts Clinton
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:29 AM
UpdateHot Air Reports this:

The director of War Room says this is a fabrication, and that makes sense; even in 1993, this would have made headlines if it came off like this. Take another listen to the audio in the clip that started going around yesterday:
A YouTube video clip of "The War Room" -- a documentary about the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign -- is furiously making the rounds (being pushed, no doubt, by Obama supporters).  It features a prominent Clinton operative apparently referring to Indianans in a rather unflattering light.

Now, I've heard of racial slurs, jokes about "Aggies" in Texas, and jokes about West Virginians (I'm from Maryland).  But I had no idea that someone could hate Indiana ...

Even-Keeled McCain Foils Left's Classy Questioner
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:20 AM

Well, everyone's talking about the "Baptist minister's" very un-Baptist question for McCain today.

As Matt pointed out, the man who asked McCain if he called his wife an unmentionable word was not just a Baptist minister, but a former Biden staffer and a current Obama supporter.

He's also, apparently, a Huffington Post contributor:
Parrish signed in as a Huffington Post contributor and was taking pictures at the town hall meeting.
Huffington Post is conveniently leaving that fact out of its write-up on l'affaire chatte, even though it excerpts other parts from the article linked above. I feel this coming to a Policing the 'Net segment near you.

Cliff Schecter, author of "The Real McCain" blogging at Firedoglake, calls the questioner "audacious," and celebrates it as an "everyday person taking democracy into their own hands." "The Real McCain" is the anti-McCain book that claims to have broken a story about McCain once calling his wife an expletive in front of press, which the McCain campaign calls a fabrication and "trash journalism."

Parrish reportedly asked the question because he's concerned about McCain's temper. If his intent was to reveal something about the candidate's temperament, he did just that. Much like the rest of the expletive-riddled, execrable ranting of the loony Left in the blogosphere, his behavior was ultimately self-defeating. He managed to make McCain look cool as a cucumber in a testy situation and make himself, his organization, his candidate, and the very premise of his question look ridiculous by contrast.

Here's McCain's response to the question, for which he is applauded:
McCain: Now, now. You don't want to... Um, you know that's the great thing about town hall meetings, sir, but we really don't, there's people here who don't respect that kind of language. So I'll move on to the next questioner in the back.
Well done, Mr. Parrish! Look at that temper roar!

Obama's Energy Flip-Floppery
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:45 AM

While everyone is talking about gas tax holiday story, a very important story has gone largely unnoticed:  Obama's inconsistency on the energy issue.

In truth, Barack Obama has been all over the map on energy matters, flip-flopping like a fish out of water.  Both fiscal conservatives and enviros could argue he’s been on the wrong side of virtually every specific energy debate since entering the Senate.

A couple weeks ago, Obama was saying there was no solution to rising fuel costs.  Now, apparently, he believes there is a long-term solution: According to this Bloomberg piece this morning, Obama is pressing for a windfall tax on oil companies.  Presumably, that's his solution ...

In fairness, Obama has previously sponsored legislation raising taxes on oil companies (which no other Senator was willing to sign-on to) -- but he also voted for the 2005 Energy Bill that offered tax breaks to the same companies(note Grist’s description of it as a “legendary porkfest").

... Interestingly, John McCain voted against the bill.

Obama Supporter Asks McCain if he Called Cindy an Expletive
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:22 AM
Gateway pundit has an interesting post today.  Turns out that a questioner who asked McCain an embarrassing and crude question at a town hall meeting was actually a former Biden staffer

Despite the fact that he is an Obama supporter infiltrating the event, The Des Moines Register took the bait, writing that he was, "a 45-year-old Baptist minister and technology business owner ..."   However, the newspaper also noted he attended the meeting by passing himself off as a member of the press. The Huffington Post also advanced the notion that this guy is a  "Baptist minister worried about McCain's temper."

By the way, I thought McCain handled it very well (so much for having a bad temper).  If this was an attempt to demonstrate that McCain has a bad temper, it failed miserably.  After all, if that sort of question doesn't make you irate, I'd say you're pretty unflappable.

A Question of Character- And Competence
Posted by: Michael Medved at 9:08 AM
In every presidential campaign, a candidate’s character plays a crucial role. We can't predict the challenges and issues a new president may face (who would have suggested George W. Bush would become a war time president?) but considering questions of temperament and competence and decency allows voters to predict how well a potential president might respond. Unfortunately for Senator Obama, his performance in the Jeremiah Wright controversy shows weak leadership and deeply flawed integrity.

His startling inability to work with his own former pastor to prevent serious damage to his campaign hardly inspires confidence in his capacity to unite Democrats, deal with a fractious Congress, or cope with foreign powers. If he can't manage to coordinate a message with his friend and mentor of twenty years, or else separate himself from that association before launching his campaign, then he'll find it even more difficult to work together with hostile strangers. Meanwhile, he offers no credible explanation for his abrupt change in attitude toward Rev. Wright. Six weeks ago he said “I can no more disown him that I can disown the black community.” Obama now denounces Wright and cites “anger” at statements at the National Press Club. But none of Wright's positions there departs from radical attitudes he’s expressed consistently for twenty years.

If Obama now says he's shocked to discover that Wright is, indeed, a crackpot who poisons the discourse, and not just a lovable and eccentric "old uncle," then the Senator is either distorting the truth or admitting incompetence. A president will need to evaluate complicated intelligence reports to determine the situation with foreign powers and terrorist threats. If Obama remained blithely oblivious to his own pastor's anti-American radicalism for twenty years, if he new less about his friend than did most members of press and public, his judgment and ability look deeply questionable. This is not a matter of "guilt by association"  (as so many Obama defenders insist) but an issue of capability and reliability and honesty that goes to the very core of the candidate's suitability as President of the United States. The whole sad affair highlights the weakness, poor judgment and waffling of an increasingly desparate presidential contender.
