Act Surprised ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:20 PM
Remember when Rove said it sounded like the McClellan book was writtern by a liberal blogger?  Well, it looks like he got it half right.

NewsBusters' Brent Baker reports:

"Peter Osnos, who wrote Wednesday that he 'worked very closely' with Scott McClellan on McClellan's new book published by PublicAffairs which Osnos founded, is a liberal whose publishing house is affiliated with the far-left The Nation magazine and the publisher of The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder. PublicAffairs has a roster of authors who are nearly all liberals and/or liberal-leaning mainstream media figures, including six books by far-left bank-roller George Soros."

Obama's ACORN Ties
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:17 PM
Over at NRO, Stanley Kurtz documents another of Barack's radical ties -- this time to ACORN.  Notwithstanding their deceptively innocuous web site, the group is very aggressively left wing.

What's more, the group has been involved in several incidents of vote fraud, including in Washington state and St. Louis. (Is it any wonder that along with other agenda items, members of ACORN are adamantly opposed to requiring photo ID at the polls?)

A Hardening Narrative
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:04 PM
If Democrats think that Hillary Clinton is the candidate who "parses, evades, dissembles and condescends," well, Karl Rove has some mighty bad news for them . . . backed up, chapter and verse, by the facts.

The frequency of some pretty noteworthy gaffes on Obama's part has been discussed on this blog before.  Those speak to inexperience.  But what seems like Barack's emerging penchant for parsing, evading, dissembling and condescending signal something more intentional.

What will be interesting to see is whether the MSM understands how much of its credibility is at stake, and whether its members will cover Barack Obama with the same rigor that they would a less "groundbreaking" candidate.

Meanwhile, the back-stabby swan song of the mediocre press secretary continues unabated.

Karl Rove compared him to a left-wing blogger. Ouch!

Obama's Talking Points
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 8:32 AM
Barack Obama has two responses when reporters ask him hard questions in regards to John McCain.

The first response is to say something along the lines of "of course he's saying this. He's just like George Bush. George Bush would do this and so is McCain." The other is to call the issue, whatever it is, a "distraction." Or in the case of a presser last night "flippant" or "sarcastic."

Even when he's talking about our troops in Iraq. (My story on this HERE.)

This Q and A below is from the transcript of a press avail on his campaign plane last night, emphasis mine (These aren't in exact order, if you want to read it yourself the transcript is HERE.)

Q: What do you make out of how long it has been since you went to Iraq? Is that relevant?

BO: I don’t think it’s relevant but I think you know their strategy seems to… [break as pilot is speaking], I don’t think that John McCain or the Bush Administration have a very strong argument to make about their foreign policy so they’re going to try to come up with diversions or distractions and not argue the substance. Because when you argue the substance, what you see is a failed strategy, a worsening situation in Afghanistan, enormous expenditures in blood and tragedy and a diminished reputation for America around the world. That’s not a strong track record to run on.

Q: Can you respond to McCain saying you’re more willing to meet with Ahmadinejad than with General Petraeus?

BO: You know, I don’t have a — you know, that’s just a, you know, a typical sarcastic comment that doesn’t have anything to do with the substance, and is patently untrue since I just saw General Petraeus when he was testifying in Washington.

Q: He’s saying outside of those meetings on the Hill, you would not set up your own meetings with General Petraeus, never attempted to meet with him?

BO: And I haven’t - look, it’s just a flippant comment, it’s not designed to actually talk about substance.  It’s a political comment that doesn’t get anywhere.

Q: Also want to talk about this could be a loss of civility between these two candidates.

BO: Well, at the point where John McCain is willing to argue the substance of his Iraq policy, and his desire to continue this policy that is inherited from George Bush; he wants to talk about how we’re going to deal with challenges economically from countries like China; if he wants to start talking about the bread and butter issues here in the United States, where he has no clear agenda for how he wants to move forward - then we’re going to have a substantive debate.  So far at least, we have not seen a desire on his part to have that kind of substantive debate.

Q: But as we’ve seen him in the last week, the tone is totally suggesting of how the general election is going to be.  Perhaps the American public was thinking, from some of the comments that you’ve made, and some of the comments that McCain has made previously, that this wasn’t going to be the tone in this election.

BO: Well I think you’re going to have to ask John McCain what kind of campaign he intends to run.  So far, it’s pretty standard Republican fare.

So, it's the same old Dem playbook. Evil Republicans. Criticisms are "distractions."

So much for change.

McClellan's David Brock Problem
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 7:38 PM
It's pretty clear at this point what Scott McClellan did, and why.  His book has zoomed to #1 on Amazon, and he can only hope that it makes him enough money to be worth the sacrifice of honor and friendships that it has and will cost him.

With the unfortunate exception of Donald Regan, time was that presidential staffers waited at least until their bosses -- the men who had "brought them to the dance" and offered them unparalleled opportunities to serve, and to witness history first-hand -- were out of office before dumping on them (or their wives, as in Regan's case).  Such delicacy no doubt entailed some sacrifice in terms of remuneration; in order for memoirs to sell well once a president's out of office, they have to offer insights of actual value, rather than simply serving as a hatchet-job account designed to make a quick buck -- and that's a much more daunting proposition.

As Matt points out below, Scott McClellan has damaged his long-term economic prospects and his reputation by apparently adopting positions that are antithetical to those he held (or at least voiced) when he was working at The White House.  But even aside from the questions about his judgment and his loyalty that this kind of about-faced memoir raises, Scott McClellan has created a David Brock-style credibility problem for himself (named in honor of the man who has penned both The Real Anita Hill and Blinded by the Right, within eight short years of each other).

The fact is that when you offer two versions of the truth, you make it clear that at least one time, you've been lying.

Sell Out ... With Me Tonight ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:04 PM

Tucker Carlson just made a good point on MSNBC.  When asked whom the McClellan book would hurt most -- Bush or McCain -- he ended by saying (paraphrasing here): McClellan will have a very hard time finding a job now.

He's right.  And it's not because there will be retribution -- it's because nobody wants to hire someone who has a history of double-crossing his boss.

Though McClellan appears to be attempting to "cash-in" with his new book -- if that's his only goal, it's actually a poor long-term decision.  What is more, if he is seeking to restore his reputation, he is also on the wrong track.

While I would not seek to compare Bush to Nixon, I do beleive that it's interesting to note that the staffers who remained loyal Nixonite's (Colson, Liddy, Buchanon, Safire, Ben Stein, et al.) seem to have fared better over the years than the folks who abandoned him (for example, John Dean).

Now, if anyone could justify selling-out there boss, it would be a Nixon staffer.  Still, the public seems to respect staffers who remain loyal to their boss ...

McCain's Vegas Townhall
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 2:28 PM
Wow. I just finished watching McCain's Las Vegas townhall from here in the MSNBC green room. He was on fire. I'll post a story about it when I get back to the office, but there were two highlights I want to pass on.

One, he read pork barrel spending out of the war supplemental and then made the case why passing "emergency spending" made for poor accounting practices. ("That way they don't have to count it," I think he said.) Two, McCain hit Obama hard on foreign policy by noting Obama is willing to sit down with Ahmadinejad, but hasn't found the time to meet face-to-face with Gen. Petraeus.

He's coming out swinging, guys.
