Happy Birthday, Israel!
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:58 PM

John McCain on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence:
"I join all Americans in offering my heartiest congratulations to the Israeli people on the 60th anniversary of their state's founding. When President Harry Truman recognized the new State of Israel 60 years ago, he formalized a deep and enduring relationship between two great peoples. In so doing, President Truman undoubtedly knew that the Jewish state would face great challenges in its early years, and he signaled American partnership in the face of these threats.

"Yet those tests were not confined to the early years after Israel's independence. Challenges to Israel have perhaps been the norm, rather than the exception, and its people have been tested in the crucible of conflict time and again. Those threats continue, and it is incumbent upon all free people to stand by Israel in her defense of our common values and ideals. Survival in the face of these enduring trials would be impressive; flourishing would seem out of the question. Yet Israel has thrived, and her people have built a nation that is an inspiration to all those who cherish freedom.

"The close and enduring U.S.- Israel relationship has thrived as well, and I am proud to support the vital ties between our two countries. Our bond will be of great importance in order to continually fulfill that aspiration sounded so eloquently in the HaTikva: 'to be a free nation.' As Israelis celebrate 60 years of independence, let no one doubt that, while the challenges will continue, Israel will survive and it will flourish. There will always be an Israel, and there will always be a vital bond between our two peoples."

At this point, I think we need to give McCain credit for not even attempting to speak Spanish.  That's soooo 2000.

McCain Does Daily Show
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:14 AM
John McCain made his historic 13th appearance on the Daily Show last night.  His ability to come off well in this setting is one of the things that I think is most appealing about him (and one of the reasons it will be difficult for the Democrats to effectively label him as old or out-of-touch).

You can check it out here.

Hillary on Supreme Court?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:56 AM
... To paraphrase Thad Cochran, that idea sends shivers down my spine.

But it's a real possibility.  Getting rid of Hillary will presumably require some sort of deal -- and I still don't buy the premise that Obama will go for the "dream ticket" -- not so long as Bill Clinton is hanging around.  Even if Obama wins the nomination, having the Clintons subtly undermining him -- and hoping he loses to McCain -- won't do him any good.  So maybe, just maybe, Obama promises to nominate her.

That's why I am occasionally writing about senate races here at Townhall.  Granted, these posts elicit very little attention or comments -- but that doesn't diminish their importance -- if you care about nominating and confirming good Supreme Court Justices.

... If Barack Obama wins the presidency, every Senate seat will be vitally important to keeping liberals off the Supreme Court.

... John McCain's recent speech on activist judges gives us a lot of hope -- but even if he picks strict constructionists -- they will still require senate approval.

If you believe John McCain will win, there is an argument that says we will really need to help elect good senators.  It's based on a psychological phenomenon called "switch-back."  This theory essentially says that if voters want to vote for Obama, but they can't bring themselves to pull the lever for him (because he has been demonized for one reason or another) -- they will vote for McCain, but vote Democratic on all the down-ballot races.  Presumably, voters do this in order to "make-up" for their presidential vote.

But getting involved in senate races has become even more of a challenge for conservatives, because almost all of the vulnerable Republicans this year are moderates.  So it becomes a pragmatic choice as to whether or not the stakes warrant your involvement.  When one considers that one of Bush's accomplishments was in nominating Justices Roberts and Alito, the prospect of allowing the court to lurch leftward, once again, is unappealing (why willingly surrender one of the few vitally important positive accomplishments we have gained in recent years?).  As such, supporting moderate Republican senators becomes a more appealing proposition.  (Getting involved in House races is another thing altogether, since they don't have a voice in Supreme Court confirmations).

One appealing reason to get involved in senate races is that you have a real chance to make a difference.  While it is difficult for one person to make a significant impact on a presidential race, "maxing-out" to a senate campaign can have a real impact.  And when it comes to the supreme court, you could make a good argument that good senators are just as important as a good president ...

Pat Toomey on Hunting RINO
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:28 AM
Pat Toomey has an excellent op-ed in today's WSJ, defending The Club for Growth's strategy of targeting liberal Republicans.  Here's an excerpt:

... Newt Gingrich, the man who ushered in a conservative Republican majority in 1994, once denounced the Club. "Their strategy is explicitly wrong," he said. "The key is to elect more Republicans and have a bigger majority and be more inclusive."

Now comes Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole, the man charged with rebuilding the GOP majority in the House. In a New York Times Magazine article, he denounced the Club for Growth's involvement in a special election in Ohio's fifth congressional district.

"The problem I have with the Club is I think they're stupid," Mr. Cole said. "They spend more money beating Republicans than Democrats."

Ultimately, this dichotomy is perfectly understandable -- and, in fact, healthy.  Both serve a purpose.  For example, the purpose of Republican committees and Republican Party-types is to elect Republicans.  The purpose of the conservative movement is something else, altogether.  We can't forget that.  But don't let the Party folks convince you they are really movement-oriented, either ...

An Interesting Irony
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:01 PM
The whole Obama/Clinton dynamic in this primary has been fascinating to watch.

Barack Obama is perhaps the only presidential candidate who could have wrested the nomination from the once-inevitable Senator Clinton -- who was supposed to make history by being the first female to win a major party nomination.  He's young, eloquent and an even more dramatic "first" than she would have been.

In turn, Hillary Clinton is almost the only active politician in the Democrat Party who can't be overtly bullied and pushed from the race to clear the field for Barack, now that it's obvious to just about everyone that she doesn't really have a shot at winning.  That's owing to her status as the wife of a former president.

It's remarkable to see how the "firsts" in the race have been playing out, often to the detriment of both sides.

Conservative blogger Matt Naugle broke the story about the Ohio AG scandal.  His reporting at the Right Angle Blog ultimately pushed the story into the mainstream Ohio papers.  Naugle actually started covering this story back in 2007.  This past weekend, it finally went national -- with some even speculating the tawdry scandal might impact the presidential election in Ohio ...

Massachusetts Senate candidate Jim Ogonowski has created a clever web ad called: "Where's John Kerry?"  It's well done -- though it reminds me a bit of the classic Paul Wellstone ad, "Where's Rudy?"

The Beaver State Battle

Hillary seems to be taking Oregon seriously.

Meanwhile, Obama hopes to end it in Oregon.

For a guy who works at a website, this 404 error is pretty funny.
