Obama Forgot About "Bracket Creep"
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:43 AM
Writing in today's Wall Street Journal, Andrew Biggs points out a major flaw in Barack Obama's plan to return to the tax rates of the 1990s (pre Bush tax cuts):
"Tax revenues would skyrocket if the tax cuts expire, due to "bracket creep." Average incomes are higher today than in the 1990s, but income-tax brackets aren't adjusted for the growth of earnings. As a result, Americans will shift into higher tax brackets and pay a greater share of their incomes in taxes.

Going back to the tax rates of the 1990s doesn't mean that households will pay 1990s taxes. Because the tax brackets haven't risen along with incomes, average taxes would be significantly higher, and grow each year.

... So even if the tax cuts are made permanent, future Americans will pay a greater share of their incomes to the government than in the past. But for some in Washington, that's not enough."

Mitt Hits Barack and McCain Needs Huck
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:35 AM
Yesterday on CNN's "The Situation Room," Mitt Romney took a shot at Barack Obama:

... "The truth of the matter is just as I said, that he doesn't have a record of accomplishments in the private sector or in the governmental sector ... hasn't pushed a major piece of legislation.

"He seems like a charming guy who's very well-spoken. But in terms of actually having led, actually having accomplished something, actually having a kind of leadership that America needs at a critical time with our economy ... he's untested. ... Frankly, Sen. McCain is someone who is tested and very proven ..."

Obama later fired back, saying this was the same kind of argument Romney had used against McCain.

Meanwhile, writing in the Buffalo News, Curt Smith makes the Huck for Veep case, arguing McCain needs Huckabee's voters:

Specifically, Huckabee would clinch what McCain aides wrongly “believe that he has already won,” the Wall Street Journal says of bornagains. Despite his recent “guns and religion” gaffe, Barack Obama could loosen such evangelical states as Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and even Mississippi. Recently, Houston TV megachurch pastor Joel Osteen lauded Hillary Clinton for “all you’ve done for America.” Kennedy’s fire wall was LBJ. Huckabee would be McCain’s. Overnight he would make the Republicans’ largest block a GOP pro, not con.

DailyKos 'Do You Love America' Poll
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 7:57 AM
"I don't understand how you are expected  to love your country. It really just doesn't make any sense to me; it is like dividing by zero. Patriotism also seems largely irrational to me."
-Daily Kos diarist Tsukasa Buddha

This post also contains a "Do you love America" poll.  Three people out of 58 so far say they "hate American with the burning passion of nuclear Iran."

He Can Speak Up When He Wants To
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:39 PM
On CNN, Barack Obama characterized John McCain's truthful observation that Hamas would prefer an Obama presidency to a McCain one as "offensive" and "a smear."

Again, one can only wish that Barack had seen fit time to speak up as promptly and forcefully to defend America during the 20 years his pastor was trashing it as he did today to defend himself -- and that he had been as "offended" then as he supposedly is now.

Former Lobbyist Holding Obama Fundraiser Tonight
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 7:05 PM

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has promised he would not accept campaign donations from lobbyists, but apparently former lobbyists don’t fall into his self-imposed ban.

Antill E. Trotter, who lobbied Congress from 2000-2004, is holding an “exclusive” fundraiser for him, just blocks away from his Senate office at Union Station in Washington D.C. this evening.

According to Obama’s campaign website, the minimum donation to attend is $1,000 and donations are encouraged up to $10,000. Thos who raised at least $10,000 are given access to a “special pre-reception” with Obama.

Senate lobbying records show Trotter was a registered federal lobbyist for Sher and Blackwell, LLP. Trotter specialized in telecommunications, transportation and environmental issues from 2000-2004. Some of Trotter's clients included AT&T, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, NCS Healthcare and the World Shipping Council.

Elections Abroad Show Conservative Tide
Posted by: Michael Medved at 6:34 PM

With Newsweek running a cover story on “The Post American World” and Democrats complaining that President Bush destroyed our influence abroad, it’s instructive to consider a recent string of election successes for foreign candidates who support our values and our policies.

In Canada , Mexico , Germany , Denmark , Greece , Ukraine and France the parties identified as “pro-American” swept to important victories. Most recently, the conservative candidate in Italy , Silvio Burlesconi, won a smashing triumph to return to power and Rome elected its first right-wing mayor in 50 years. Then in local elections throughout Britain , the Conservatives thumped the ruling Labor Party, 44% to 24%, and turned out the anti-American mayor of London , “Red Ken” Livingstone. The global trend favors politicians who back free markets and welcome U.S. leadership—hardly a sign of a “Post American World.”

Superdelegate Nullification May Doom Hill
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:30 PM

At the end of the day, Hillary's only legitimate argument is going to be that she can win the swing states that Obama can't, thus she is more electable, thus superdelegates should pick her ...

But here's the interesting thing:  Let's suppose that superdelegates knew for a fact that Hillary would win in November -- and that Obama would lose in November.

They would then have to make a calcuation:  "Should we think long-term of short-term?"

Obviously, any perception that the insiders "stole" the election from Obama would have a long-term negative impact for the party.

Thus, Hillary may face superdelegates who have decided it's better to lose with Obama than win with Clinton.

How do you beat that?

The Forgotten Man
Posted by: Tom DeLay at 4:35 PM
It's just like Democrats to think they can tax their way into a housing recovery.  Now they want the 95 percent of homeowners who are paying their mortgage on time to pony up taxdollars to pay for their neighbor's mortgage, too.  On top of that, Democrats are funneling a 35 MILLION dollar slush fund to their best friends, the trial lawyers!

Here is conservative Congressman Tom Feeney's take on it from the House floor...well said.

Hillary Letter to Obama: Hey, Shouldn't We Totally Seat those FL and MI Delegates, Disenfranchiser?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 4:07 PM

The Democratic race has devolved into note-passing:
In an open letter to her Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton asks Barack Obama to help her "arrive at a solution that honors the votes of the millions of people who went to the polls in Florida and Michigan." ...

Your commitment to the voters of these states must be clearly stated and your support for a fair and quick resolution must be clearly demonstrated.
Must, huh?

An Obama spokesman said, "I'm sorry, what was that? We were too busy pickin' up your superdelegates to read your letter."

Okay, no spokesman said that, but he should have.

In e-mails from the campaign today and yesterday, both Hillary herself and Bill Clinton have indicated she'll be in until June 3.

Reason 56,783 You Should Be Pumped Your Tax Dollars Are Paying for NPR
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:53 PM

On the Diane Rehm show yesterday: David Rothenberg, philosopher, musician, and "expert in inter-species duets," who has written a book called "Thousand-Mile Song," which chronicles the magic of whale songs and his attempts to perform with the whales by broadcasting his own music underwater. Mmm-hmm.

Rehm offered a 51-minute interview with him, which included these incisive questions. Only on NPR...
How are you physically playing this clarinet along with the whales?

Was there any indication that the whales found what you were doing interesting?
At one point, a caller suggests that perhaps the whale songs are a form of prayer, at which point we get this doozy from Diane:
Do you think it could bring peace to the world through prayer?
It was so utterly ludicrous as to border on parody. Yes, Diane, whale songs broadcast around the world will undoubtedly stop the genocide in Darfur, the bloodlust of al Qaeda in Iraq, the nuclear ambitions of Ahmadinejad, and let's not forget the unchecked imperial lust of the United States of America, which is likely what she had in mind.

Either whale songs or Obama should do the trick. Come to think of it, Obama's foreign policy is about as unintelligible as whale songs. Peace is on the way! Suggesting that praying to Jesus or a Judeo-Christian God would bring peace would likely have gotten her fired, however.

I listen so you don't have to. But you're paying for it!

DNC Superdelegate Puts His Vote Up For Sale
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:40 PM
What's a superdelegate vote worth?  About $20 million on the open market, apparently.

This must be bogus.  It's too entrepreneurial for a Democrat ...
