A "Porno Tax" Makes Sense for California
Posted by: Michael Medved at 1:26 PM

California faces a staggering budget deficit and a Democrat in the state Assembly has come up with a novel tax plan to try to close the gap. Representative Charles Calderon wants a special tax of 25 percent on gross receipts of California ’s booming pornography industry. He argues that it’s not just a question of more money for the state, but of purveyors of so-called “adult entertainment” paying off the societal costs of the toxic, addictive product they produce.

Republicans rightly prefer sweeping cuts in government to avoid all new taxes, but if the state ultimately needs more money, better to aim at marketers of porn rather than hitting mainstream, respectable industries. It makes sense to tax Jack Daniels more than carrot juice, cigarettes more than celery sticks, and lap dances and porno stores more than 7-11’s.

Forewarned Is Forearmed
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:00 PM
Hillary Clinton has -- as all of America knows -- complained that the MSM has given Barack a free ride, while pounding her.  Well, according to a new study from Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism and Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center . . . not so much.

In fact, if anyone has a right to complain about the campaign coverage, it's John McCain.   While positive narratives about Barack in the MSM totalled a whopping 69 percent of all the assertions made about him, Hillary wasn't too far behind at 67 percent positive.  In a (predictably) dramatic contrast, John McCain received a positive percentage of only 43 percent.

Amazingly, some commentators and political analysts (like NBC's First Read  and Neal Gabler, writing in The New York Times) have suggested that McCain is receiving unfairly positive coverage.  Well, maybe that was true when his status as a "maverick" was giving Republicans headaches.  But now that his status as putative Republican nominee may be giving Democrats headaches, the game has changed.

Let's hope that the McCain camp has planned a press strategy that doesn't entirely rely on his supposed ability to woo and charm the MSM.  It isn't going to work this time, as the study above makes manifestly plain.  Forewarned is forearmed.

Obama's Gaffes Reveal More Than Mistakes ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:56 AM
A new narrative seems to be developing about Barack Obama; that he is smart but also a "gaffe machine."  The WSJ's John Fund writes:

"As smart and credentialed as he is, Sen. Obama is often an indifferent speaker without a teleprompter. He has large gaps in his knowledge base, and is just as likely to dig in and embrace a policy misstatement as abandon it. ABC reporter Jake Tapper calls him 'a one-man gaffe machine'."

Let's be honest, when you talk as much as presidential candidates must, some gaffes are unavoidable.  Others occur when a candidate is tired.  But Obama's gaffes seem to be the result of a candidate who is in over his head -- who has gotten by on style points -- not the substance.

To me, this is the real story -- that Obama's gaffes actually reveal something more dangerous than a candidate who merely "misspeaks."  That his gaffes are the product of someone who is not quite ready for prime time...

Of course, going from the Illinois state senate to being a presidential frontrunner is a lot of ground to cover in just a few years ...

Another interesting thing to consider is whether or not this lack of historical understanding is uniquely due to Obama's inexperience -- or if his lack of knowledge is actually a cultural phenomenon.

While Obama is a child of the 80s, he seems to have a lot in common with today's generation.  In his new book, The Dumbest Generation, author Mark Bauerlein says this phenomenon is true of most "Millenials."  In short, Bauerlein argues today's young people are great at using the internet to retrieve information, but that they lack knowledge of history.  Might Obama's emphasis of style over substance be a result of the era in which he was raised?  Is it unique to him?  Or is it merely a product of a young man who is still finding himself?  These are all interesting to ponder.

Consider the Reagan vs. Obama contrast.  When Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980, he had lives through The Great Depression, WWII, Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, etc.  He had also achieved success in other areas of life.  For this reason, he did not need the presidency to give his life purpose.  Of course, being compared to Reagan is never a good thing for the person being compared.

Still, it's fair to say that Obama has been playing "over his head" for quite some time.  He's like a young football team who starts off winning a lot of games.  Deep down, you always suspect it won't last.

It's also interesting to note that Obama has really won few contests in the last several months.  To over-extend the football metaphor, he's like a football team who "backs into the playoffs".  One wonders if McCain will be facing the Obama of February -- or the Obama who got his clock cleaned in West Virginia.

There is no doubt he has run a surprisingly smart primary campaign.  But because he and Hillary agreed on most major policy issues -- he was not forced to defend his political philosophy.  That is about to change.  McCain will challenge him, and most likely, this will create "forced errors."

At least, Obama appears to be demonstrating that he is, in fact, human.

Majority of Americans Support GOP Energy Plan
Posted by: Michele Bachmann at 10:49 AM
Have you heard about this yet? A new Gallup Poll shows that the majority of the American people prefer Republican-led domestic energy reforms to deal with soaring energy prices. 57 percent of Americans agree with Republicans and favor more energy exploration here in the United States to help bring down the price of gasoline. This comes after a year and a half of no direction from Democratic leadership in Congress to help lower the cost of gasoline.

When will the Democratic leadership begin to actually do something to address American's concerns?

Send Us The Bill Susan
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 9:44 AM
From the Post:
Susan Sarandon, who appeared in three films last year and won kudos for her TV movie "Bernard and Doris," is still not a contented soul. She says if John McCain gets elected, she will move to Italy or Canada. She adds, "It's a critical time, but I have faith in the American people."

We'll buy the plane ticket.

If The Phone Doesn't Ring, It's Me
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 9:02 AM
Back in June of 2007 when Scott McClellan left the White House, President Bush and McClellan shared a light-hearted moment in front of the White House.

Bush: "One of these days he and I are going to be rocking in our chairs in Texas talking 'bout the good old days with his time as the press secretary"

McClellan: "I got a good laugh out of that..."
I'll bet.

Don't expect an invitation to Texas anytime soon Scott.

Left-Sided Tolerance?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:30 PM
As Hugh Hewitt notes below, another radical, race-baiting reverend has been hand-in-glove with Barack -- this time, it's a white priest by the name of Michael Pfleger.

The reporting on Pfleger casts a new and disturbing light on Barack Obama.  It had been my belief that his relationship with Jeremiah Wright might well have been forged through his wife, who seems to share Wright's dark vision of America -- especially because everyone knows that a clergyman doesn't marry a couple and then baptize their children unless the wife/mother is very comfortable with him.

But Pfleger is a whole other story, and it suggests, disturbingly, that Barack either agrees with -- or is all too willing to tolerate -- radical racial hate speech from the left.  It's clear that Barack has accepted contributions from Pfleger, accepted his endorsement (although James Taranto reports that the campaign has since suppressed it) and directed a whole lot of Illinois taxpayers' money to Pfleger's projects.

No doubt Barack will tell us that he supported Pfleger's good works, not his radical race-baiting.  OK; there's a way to test that claim.  Has Barack sought to support any good works by conservative pastors with whom he disagrees?

Or does his tolerance for ideas he claims he doesn't share extend only to the left side?

Turk has commented on the story on his own blog.

Sound Familiar? Here's McClellan on Richard Clark's "Tell All" Book
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:30 PM
Via the White House's website, here's what Scott McClellan had to say about Richard Clark's book back in '04:

Q Why do you think he's doing this?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he's raising these grave concerns that he claims he had. And I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is bringing this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. He has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book. Certainly let's look at the politics of it. His best buddy is Rand Beers, who is the principal foreign policy advisor to Senator Kerry's campaign. The Kerry campaign went out and immediately put these comments up on their website that Mr. Clarke made.

(Emphasis mine).

David Gregory: This Doesn't Sound Like Scott ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:04 PM
It's not just Karl Rove and Bush loyalists who are saying that Scott McClellan's new book doesn't sound like him.  MSNBC's David Gregory -- who was a White House corespondent during McClellan's tenure as press secretary -- agrees.   He just reiterated that very point on his MSNBC show.

As Variety reports, he said something similar last night:

On Wednesday's edition of "Today," "NBC Nightly News" reporter David Gregory, who covered the White House while McClellan was spokesman, said, "There was never any indication that Scott McClellan, either publicly or privately, held these kinds of views about what was happening at the time on the war, on Katrina, on the leak case -- which was his most difficult hour in the White House. He never expressed anything like this."

All the Wrong Friends
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 4:07 PM
The linked Fox News piece points out that Barack Obama has been finding love in all the wrong places.  His candidacy has elicited honeyed words from a real Hall of Shame.

Most recently, Fidel Castro has lauded Barack as a “progressive,” and admires his “great intelligence” and “debating skills” and “work ethic.”

Hamas adviser Ahmed Yousef cherishes the hope that "he [Obama] will win the elections," presumably because he thinks that "Mr. Obama and the Democrats will change the political discourse.”

Hugo Chavez is rooting against John McCain.

Louis Farrakhan has also had nice things to say about Barack.

Obviously, simply because these people are rooting for him doesn't mean that Obama is rooting for them.  But isn't there something revealing when all America's enemies (or at least those willing to go on the record) are unanimously in favor of one of the candidates?  Doesn't it signal, perhaps, that they believe it will be easier to attain their objectives with that candidate sitting in the Oval Office -- and since those agendas are inimical to ours, shouldn't that be making voters a little uneasy?

In the Public Eye
Posted by: John Campbell at 2:32 PM
Earlier this week, the Rock Hill Herald from South Carolina published a story on Congressman James Clyburn's (D-S.C.) numerous monuments bearing his name across the 6th district of South Carolina.

Clyburn's name is adorned on 14 seperate buildings, monuments, and roadways ranging from the James E. Clyburn Golf Center to the James E. Clyburn Intermodal Transportation Center, some of which were funded by federal tax dollars.  Hardly a prudent use of taxpayer dollars to say the least.

However, Mr. Clyburn has some work to do if he wants to gather as many namesakes as Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), who has an amazing 34 monuments, roads, bridges, and buildings across West Virginia named after himself.

Pretty impressive?  Or pretty ridiculous?

Webb as Veep?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:11 PM
I gave a speech this morning in Richmond, VA to VPAP, the Virginia Public Policy Access Project -- a great group whose mission is to make it easy for folks to search for Virginia political contributions on the net.

During my remarks, I noted that the "macaca" moment did several things.  It swung the Senate to the Dems -- stopped the candidate most "insiders" believed would be the GOP nominee -- and it also gave us Jim Webb -- who (I noted) has a good chance of being Obama's running mate ...

James Fallows argues that Jim Webb would be great electorally, but that being Veep would make him miserable.

Scott McClellan and the Awful Truth
Posted by: Michael Medved at 1:24 PM
Yes, the Scott McClellan book proves that Bush made a terrible mistake during his presidency—and the worst of them was hiring this loser in the first place. Scott McC. was utterly unqualified for his high position – having achieved nothing in his life prior to working for Bush other than serving in three of his nutty mother’s campaigns (she was a thrice-married former Mayor of Austin, former Democrat, former Republican, current “Independent” nut-burger and recent fringe candidate for governor). Scott’s proud papa is a conspiracy theorist and disbarred lawyer who wrote a book charging LBJ and “Big Oil” with the JFK assassination.

Obviously, McClellan got his White House job simply because he displayed loyalty to Bush (after Karen Hughes hired him during the gubernatorial campaign) and even that single qualification is now shown as worthless – like Scotty himself.
