The Earmark Game
Posted by: John Campbell at 12:00 PM

An article published in today’s Roll Call, exposes the politics that earmarks play in Congress.

The article cites a letter from Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairwoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI) who explicitly states, “Inherently, we understand that this earmark process is not equitable… There are a few examples of where your help could significantly assist a few members in highly contested races.”

In February, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) released a list of 29 members that are potentially vulnerable, not surprisingly, 20 of those members received airdropped earmarks in the omnibus appropriations bill.

This letter appears to request taxpayer dollars to aid in political campaigns, which is improper and possibly illegal.  The earmark distribution process must be investigated to ensure that no federal laws are being broken.

The Blog Turns 10
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:03 AM
And, you've come a long way, baby!
Blogs have come a long way since Dec. 17, 1997, when Jorn Barger coined the term "weblog" to describe the list of links on his Robot Wisdom website that "logged" his internet wanderings. In the decade hence, blogs have come to dominate the net, from 100 million personal diaries to the breaking news sections of the august The New York Times.
(Click through for picture goodness of the original blogger, which will kind of confirm what you've always thought about bloggers.)

More evidence that the Internet's not evil:
"The public can find themselves in a dialogue with politicians and leaders that simply wasn't possible before," he said. "(Blogging is) a tool that you can use to do anything. Change the world or put up your restaurant's daily menu, and anything in between."

Baby's First Suicide Bombing
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:35 AM

In Britain, investigators are looking into the sale of a children's sing-along DVD that glorifies suicide bombing. The book store selling the DVD is in one of Britain's terrorist hotbeds, just blocks from the homes of the 7/7 bombers.

One song, inspired by the story of a Palestinian mother of two who killed four Israeli soldiers in a suicide bombing in 2004, features a young girl watching her mother prepare and strap on a dynamite belt .

As her mother confronts a pair of soldiers and blows herself up, her little girl vows to  follow in her steps  while gazing meaningfully at a stick of dynamite.

So sick it's hard to even know what to say. Oh, and the video is hosted by a really cute cartoon chicken.

Fire at the Old Executive Office Building
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:56 AM
Photobucket

Well, this doesn't look good. No details yet. This building is next door to the White House, and one of the prettiest buildings in Washington. Also called the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and affectionately called the "Ike" by President Bush.

More:

Video showed firefighters breaking a window and spraying flames with a hose.

The building, built between 1871 and 1888, is located across a driveway from the White House and houses the vice president's offices.

Also called the Old Executive Office Building, it was originally built for the State, War and Navy Departments and is an example of the French Second Empire style of architecture, according to a government Web site.
Update: On Fox, it looks like the fire's under control. They're reporting the fire broke out next to the VP's ceremonial office.

Update: Cue the Democratic Underground conspiracy theory about "document destruction."

Update: It's out with only one hand laceration to one fireman, thank goodness.

Hillary: Queen of Pork
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:53 AM

As the budget fight trudged on (the omnibus is essentially passed at this point, with one more affirmation vote in the House coming up. No Christmas presents for fiscal conservatives!), the good folks at Heritage were actually combing the omnibus bill that none of your senators will bother to read in its entirety.

Schumer, Murray and Clinton are the top porkers. Somewhere, Ted Stevens is dabbing his eyes with a taxpayer-funded Sen. Ted Stevens Hankie acquired in the farm bill of 2005 with money for a $100,000 earmark for "infrastructure for salt-water clean-up and mucus retainment."

If Obama were smart-- he of the actual, results-yielding Coburn-Obama bill to get pork projects out in the open-- he'd whack Hillary with this one. Sure, Dems aren't really for fiscal responsibility, but he could make a good argument about how he's fighting the status quo. Of course, I wonder how many pork projects he has in the bill.

Coburn on the omnibus:
“This bill is the culmination of 12 months of procrastination, broken promises and misplaced priorities. Experts looking for an explanation of Congress’ historic low approval ratings should look no further than this bill.”

Rudy's Non-Denominational Holiday Ad
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:05 AM
I can't decide if this is a clever spoof of the Huckabee ad (note the red sweater), an endearing message from Rudy that both shows his humor -- and stays on message, or just plain painful ...

Britney Spears' 16 year old sister is pregnant
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 9:20 PM

I'm Shocked but not surprised.

Sixteen-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears has revealed that she is with child.

The Zoey 101 star confirms her expectant status in OK! magazine's new issue and says that the father is longtime beau Casey Aldridge.

"It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected," Spears says. "I was in complete and total shock and so was he."

I'm on "Red Eye" tonight talking about who knows what.

Also, I was watching Brit Hume's "Special Report" tonight and was thrilled to find my Nurse Ratched video garnered the coveted end-of-show, Brit-approved funny slot. Woo hoo! I'll see if I can find video of it.

Guess I can mark "make Brit Hume laugh" off the major life goals list and retire. Awesome.

Update:
Here's the video. Thanks to our Salem guys in California and Allah, both of whom were able to grab it for me.

Fred Thompson Making a Major Move in Iowa
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:00 PM
“The liberals in Iowa look to The Des Moines Register for their endorsements -- and the conservatives look to Steve King.”

... That’s according to Sen. Fred Thompson’s Iowa Executive Director, Robert Haus, a self-proclaimed "fossil" of Iowa politics who has worked for candidates like Sen. Chuck Grassley, Bob Dole, and Steve Forbes.

Of course, Haus was referencing the endorsement Thompson recently picked up of popular conservative Iowa Congressman Steve King, and juxtaposing it with John McCain's endorsement by The Des Moines Register.

I talked to Haus while he was on the way to an event -- the fourth Thompson event of the day for him.  Haus was understandably upbeat, especially considering David Yepsen's column about Thompson today.

Haus tells me Thompson has been received quite well:

“I think, just based on the reception we’ve seen in the last 24 hours, it’s been nothing short of spectacular."

“... It’s hoots and hollers and 'hell yeas' from the back of the room.  It’s almost Revivalesque.  It’s stuff we’re not used to in Iowa," says Haus.

He also tells me he's also surprised by the number of folks who are undecided, and the number of folks who are unhappy with the candidates they are currently supporting.

When asked to talk about organization, Haus is slightly less optimistic.  Regarding whether or not Thompson will have organizers in all 99 counties, Haus says they are working hard every day to build an organization:  “We’re going to build the ark until the rain starts," he quips.

He also notes that this year is unique, adding: “None of us have campaigned this hard over Christmas.”  This is true.  Most campaigns get a brief reprieval before the Cuacuses on say, January 17.  This year, of course, the caucus is on January 3.

One thing is clear:  Anyone watching Iowa had better not write Fred Thompson off just yet ...

Note: If you’re interested in Iowa politics, I recently also spoke with Romney’s Iowa Communications Director, Tim Albrecht

Let's Hear it for the Boy
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:31 PM
Speaking of movies, I just got an e-mail from the Edwards campaign written by none other than Kevin Bacon who was kind enough to direct me to Edwards' new ad, which casts the Edwards campaign as a cinematic masterpiece that will redeem the nation.

Couldn't they just as easily have recycled the Footloose trailer, casting Edwards as a fresh-faced rebel who just moved to small-town America determined to lead the local citizenry and deliver them from the stifling repression of the old regime by... dancing his little heart out in a pair of tight-fittin,' acid-washed jeans?

Who wouldn't buy that?

Here's the Edwards trailer. Much like the candidate, it's slick-looking but ultimately overreaches with mean-spirited class warfare rhetoric with little substance to commend it. It is another example of Dems doing web video well, though:

And, because it fits:

Update: Can it be true? Edwards got game? Well, he is from Tobacco Road. I'll hand it to him. This is pretty impressive showing around the arc.

Hillary, the Movie
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:23 PM
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Citizens United, a conservative group headed by the lead investigator in the Whitewater hearings, is airing a trailer for their documentary on the woman who would be president.

It's made up of more than 40 interviews with policy experts and politicos who've stood toe-to-toe with the Glacier over the years. The trailer is here. Pretty compelling if it makes it to TV.

But will it?

Citizens United is now concerned about whether it can run TV ads to plug the movie without running into problems with campaign finance laws. The group has already hired James Bopp Jr, to represent them in a suit against the Federal Election Commission (FEC). He argues that Citizens United should be able to run ads for the movie without disclosing the film’s financiers or including a disclaimer about who produced the ad. Bopp won a similar case in June before the Supreme Court.

“If you take excerpts of the movie and put them on TV, you are subject to reports and disclaimers,” said Bopp on steps of the U.S. District Court where he filed the lawsuit today. “I have a client that has been working hard for months to produce a movie ... and they want be able to sell the movie.”

The Clinton camp has no comment as of yet.
