Gibbs' Redemption Song
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:46 AM

Amanda doesn't like it when I talk sports, but it's Christmas (and she's out of town), so here goes ...

Kudos to Joe Gibbs and my Washington Redskins for last night's win.  If you follow the NFL, you'll know that it's been a tough year for Gibbs, so it's good to see him shine during a prime-time game.  According to the WaPost:

... Gibbs would never describe it as vindication, but there had to be something so sweetly satisfying about winning such a crucial replay challenge with 8 minutes 58 seconds left in the game.

A number of assistants noticed 12 Vikings on the field, and Gibbs was told plainly in his headset before he threw the flag. Minnesota had recovered a fumble, had its mojo working and wanted so badly to send the Redskins back down the road to second-half ruin they had come to know so well.

But those dunce-cap days seem so far away. The coach who admitted he didn't know the rules about freezing a kicker on back-to-back timeout calls three weeks ago against Buffalo brought all his smarts to bear against the Vikings. That call crushed Minnesota's momentum and, amazingly, sent Gibbs's team home for a date with Dallas on the last weekend of the regular season.

Whether or not you like the Redskins, you've got to admit:  Joe Gibbs is a class-act in the NFL, and deserves all his success.

Now on to Dallas!

No Christmas Ham
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:46 PM
Sadly, there will be no Christmas HamNation coming out today. The Townhall headquarters is moving and I've been packing Peeps and Peep accessories all day. I had an idea, which I may execute next week.

In the meantime, Hillary's ad was just begging to be spoofed and Bryan and the Hot Air crew have done the spoofing and done it well. Go watch!

Merry Christmas!

GOP Media Consultant on Huckabee's Christmas Ad
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:00 PM

There's been a lot of talk about Huckabee's Christmas ad featuring the "flying cross" -- or bookshelf -- depending on whom you ask.

As you may have heard, liberal ad gury Donny Deutch described the ad as "frightening."

I wanted to ask a professional Republican ad man his thoughts on this, so I talked to Paul Wilson of Wilson Grand Communications.

Wilson believes the flying cross was most likely a happy accident.  According to Wilson:

Technically they "could" have done the shot two ways:

Green screen and passing (floating) a full motion picture of the sceene behind him.

The second way is to have the Governor sit there and have a dolly on a track move to let the background "spin" as we say in the biz.

Here's my guess what happen.   They wanted to reveal the Christmas tree.  So whichever way they did the shot the tree had to "appear."   Either live with the dolly as they started to see the shot for the 3rd or 4th take they "discovered" what they had created--the floating cross.  They then said "cool" -- that works.

Crazy Time
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:55 AM
Over at AmSpecBlog, Philip Klein takes me to task for my defense of Romney on the assertion that he exaggerated about seeing his dad march with MLK ...

Yeah, I mean, Romney never claimed to be a lifelong hunter or anything.
(That's why I wrote that Romney didn't have a "significant pattern" of exaggerating his personal background)

... Look, I think the Romney/MLK story is a stretch.  But I also think the McCain lobbyist story is bogus.  And I think the Huckabee/cross story is over-blown ...

With Iowa and New Hampshire right around the corner, it's crazy time.  People are getting desperate …

Recent Romney Attacks Are a Stretch
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:22 AM
Romney critics are making hay out of Mitt Romney's statement that he "saw" his father march with MLK (of course, he did not literally see him march with King).

Unlike Al Gore and the Clintons, there has not been a significant pattern of Romney exaggerating his personal history or family background.

I'm willing to accept the fact that Romney was speaking figuratively ...

Sununu Leading in Senate Race

A new poll has Sen. John Sununu now beating former governor Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire.

Could Shaheen be feeling the backlash from her husband's comments about Obama?

Giving the Gift of Music -- at Shockingly Low Cost
Posted by: Michael Medved at 3:11 AM

With Christmas approaching in a matter of days, and countless shoppers seeking a novel, beautiful, thoughtful, unexpected gift, I’ve stumbled across a perfect recommendation --- tender, tuneful, fresh, folksy and eminently affordable.

There’s a newly released album of enchanting music by the English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934), and for the ridiculous price of $5.99 you can provide someone you love with an hour of delight that’s worth more than the cost each and every time you listen.

Holst is best known for his astrological blockbuster “The Planets,” but the small pieces on this album (“Gustav Holst: Orchestral Music”, from Arte Nova recordings) are less dazzling and bombastic --  more intimate, more gentle, more connected to the English folk tunes that inspired Holst throughout his life. In his student years, he tramped through the British countryside with primitive recording equipment (and occasionally with his great friend Ralph Vaughan Williams) to capture the sounds of the authentic (and fading) English folk-song tradition. This new album provides some rarely heard arrangements of such earthy, ancient material “Six Morris Dance Tunes,” “Seven Scottish Airs” and, most unforgettably, the haunting and spiritual “In the Bleak Midwinter” (appropriate for late December, indeed). There’s also the spirited romp for strings “St. Paul’s Suite” (written for the girls school at which Holst taught), the “Brook Green Suite,” and the precious, jewel-like, deeply affecting “Lyric Movement for Viola and Small Orchestra” – 11 minutes of ethereal, yearning meditation I had never heard before.

The performances by the London Festival Orchestra conducted by Ross Pople are consistently lively and affectionate, even if this energetic band can’t quite match major orchestral ensembles in terms of precision or virtuosity. The sound quality is appropriately intimate, with surprising attention to detail.

This sort of music can induce a dreamlike state, or provide a background soundtrack as appropriate as a crackling fire for holiday get-togethers. Familiar melodies like “Greensleeves” and “Auld Lang Syne” and “Country Gardens” pop up from time to time and deserve welcome like old friends.

The serial number for this exceptional Compact Disc is Arte Nova/ANO 340220, and it’s available at most Borders, Barnes & Noble, and other prominent book and music stores for $5.99 (click here for purchasing information) – even less if you use one of the coupons these merchants often provide on demand at this time of year.

It’s a bargain-hunters dream for enhancing your gift-giving or your own musical enjoyment of the holiday season.

Suspicious Timing in McCain Story
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:55 PM
As you've probably seen, The Drudge Report is pushing a story about John McCain:
McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
With McCain surging in New Hampshire (Reuters reports he's up 15 points since November), the timing of this seems a bit suspicious to me. Is this South Carolina all over again?

Interestingly, when I interviewed John McCain on the Straight Talk Express this spring, he cited telecom legislation as an example of why he supports campaign finance reform:

Tancredo Endorses Romney
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:02 PM

From the Fix:

Rep. Tom Tancredo (Colo.) today ended his long-shot bid for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination and threw his support to Mitt Romney.

Tancredo's biggest impact on the field came as he bowed out of a contest that he never had any real chance of winning. Tancredo had made tough stand on immigration the centerpiece and organizing principle of his campaign, and his endorsement of Romney could prove a powerful validator of the former governor's bona fides on the issue.

The GOP Class of 2007: We Hardly New Ye ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:44 PM

With 2007 almost over, it's time to reflect on the GOP candidates who touched our lives -- and ruined our debates -- before dropping out of the race for president this year ...

1.  Jim Gilmore The Grinch Candidate:  As he runs for U.S. Senate in Virginia against Mark Warner, no candidate will be missed less from the presidential field than Jim Gilmore.  Other than advancing the term, "RudyMcRomney," he contributed little to the debate.  Sadly, his quixotic presidential campaign probably also hurt his already diminished reputation in the Commonwealth.

2.  Tommy Thompson - The Jim Croce Candidate: Thompson's campaign proved you can't save time in a bottle.  In the 90s, he was a rock star.  In 2007, not so much ...

3.  Sam Brownback - The "On-Paper" Candidate - Of all the candidates to drop out in 2007, Brownback may have the brightest future.  He has a good shot of being elected Governor of Kansas, and then, who knows?  No doubt, in 2007, Sam Brownback learned a valuable lesson about politics:  That the facts matter less than image.  Though he was clearly the social conservative candidate on paper, he was out-"charisma'd" by Romney and Huckabee.  One wonders if Brownback's exodus has helped Huckabee become the undisputed "Christian candidate."  Additionally, it will be interesting to see if Brownback's endorsement of John McCain will have a lasting impact ...

4.  Tom Tancredo - The Single-Issue Candidate - Credited with heping advance the issue of immigration into the national debate, there was something about the way Tom Tancredo spoke that made one a bit nervous.  I don't mean the positions he took -- as much as I mean his elocution.  While he wasn't ready for the national stage, Tancredo is rumored to be considering a bid for the U.S. Senate.

Note:  Newt Gingrich "The Tease" candidate - Newt deserves an honorable mention for persuading me to travel to Atlanta, GA two days before he announced he wouldn't be running for president ...

Update:  Tancredo's greatest contribution to the GOP nomination may be endorsing Mitt Romney.
