A Clinton Supporter Goes There
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:05 PM
Anti-Muslim e-mails flying in Iowa, according to a Dodd supporter reporting from there:
One was forwarded to me from a Clinton county chair. The other was from a person who claimed to be a former Obama supporter, but a little work with Google revealed she had been posting pro-Clinton comments for several months on websites covering the campaign.

They both repeat the Obama/Osama crap, and the "madrassa" charges. And there is the conclusion that Obama is a mole whose intention is to make a Muslim revolution in the U.S.
The Clinton campaign has let go the county chair responsible.
There is no place in our campaign, or any campaign, for this kind of politics. A volunteer county coordinator made the mistake of forwarding an outrageous and offensive chain e-mail. This was wholly unauthorized and we were totally unaware of it. Let me be clear: No one should be engaging in this. We are asking this volunteer county coordinator to step down and are making it clear to every person involved in our campaign that this will not be tolerated.
Allah wonders if the candidate herself will be held accountable for the "tone" and "climate" she's created that has spawned this kind of hate. Nah.

Clinton County IA Chair Sends Anti-Muslim Email
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:49 PM
Marc Ambinder reports:

A county chair for Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has been caught sending an e-mail casting aspersions on Sen. Barack Obama's religion, and today, the Clinton campaign asked the person, a volunteer, to leave the campaign.

$450 billion is not Small Change
Posted by: John Campbell at 1:18 PM

Congressional Democrats have consistently argued that their higher spending level--$21 billion in FY 2008—is a small fraction of the overall federal budget.  But when you spread this out over 10 years, the difference amounts to $450 billion….hardly a small sum of money.

To put this into perspective, this $450 billion could amount to:

  • A six-year repeal of the AMT,
  • Twice the “cost” of extending the child tax credit for another 10 years,
  • 91% of the “cost” of making the death tax permanent,
  • 53% of the “cost” of making the individual income tax rates permanent,
  • 11 times the amount of money needed to make marriage penalty relief permanent,
  • Twice the amount needed to make the capital gains and dividend tax relief permanent, or
  • Nearly the same amount as the non-interest portion of the Social Security surplus over 5 years.

Vague Plans for Bloggers at Republican Convention
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:33 AM
Matt Burns, director of communications for the Republican Convention, spoke about having bloggers at the Republican Convention during a recent walk-through of the facilities for media. (Video at the link)

His answers are mostly good for bloggers, but more than a little vague. Republicans will be credentialing independent bloggers, but it's unclear how many or how they'll decide that number. Burns alluded to "reaching out" at an unspecified time to gauge interest and moving from there.

The media asking the questions in the video clip is predictably snooty about  bloggers, asking how the RNC will "deal" with the fact that many independent bloggers are-- gasp!--partisan. Heaven forfend that informed, active conservative citizen journalists would cover an event of great interest to their informed, active conservative audiences.

Both parties are beginning planning for blogger presence earlier than in 2004, and planning to incorporate more bloggers this time around, but the Democratic Convention is already accepting blogger applications, and the rhetoric about involving them is somewhat more encouraging:
"Bloggers can give you 24-hour coverage of the convention, of the delegate meetings, of the caucuses, of the parties,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “Everything that goes on, the bloggers can be there to cover.” This includes speeches not delivered in prime time or too late for East Coast print deadlines.

“Bloggers have shown that they have access and they have reach, and their words can be just as influential as those of traditional media,” he added. “They have a very strong connection with their readers. They can sway elections and move message and that’s something we want to take advantage of.”

Burns said he'd like to get bloggers involved remotely who can't come from their home bases to Denver, allowing them to interact with surrogates and other speakers using technology, but also spoke of "space" limitations in determining who gets credentialed. Like I said, not bad news, but not terribly encouraging.

We'll see where this heads. They'll get it together, but I'd like to see a little more detail from an RNC operative who clearly knows the blogosphere.

Why Rush Likes Fred
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:14 AM
As you probably heard, Rush Limbaugh recently said some kind words about Fred Thompson.  While Rush's comments dealt with Thompson's conservatism, I can't help but think that part of the reason Rush may like him is stylistic.  For example, if Rush were running for president, this is exactly what he would have done (right down to the cigar) ...

National Review & Mitt Romney ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:00 AM
Over at NRO, Peter Beinart and Jonah Goldberg debate whether or not Romney should give the speech.  Meanwhile, Mark Hemingway writes the speech Mitt should give in Texas.

... Speaking of Romney and National Review, I'm hearing from a pretty reliable source that National Review is very close to officially endorsing Mitt Romney ...

Update:  I was able to email with Kathryn Lopez of NRO.  K-Lo told me:

we talk about lots of possibilities for corporate statements everyday here about many an issue. there's nothing imminent about anyone, though we have a fine NIE editorial today (we're not endorsing Ahmadinejad).

yes, we're talking about possibly making an endorsement of someone in primary season, but nothing is decided.

Surprise: Bill Clinton Switches Seats at NYC Gala to Hit On Penelope Cruz
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:40 AM

"Just what kind of girl do you think I am?"

Ahh, Bill (emphasis mine):
"Mr. Clinton was seated next to the Queen of Spain, on her right, and Mr. Oscar de la Renta was on her left. To the left of Mr. de la Renta was Ms. Cruz, and to the right of Mr. Clinton was Anna Wintour . . . The real highlight of the evening was watching the former president eventually forsake the editor of Vogue as a dinner partner and switch his seat with Mr. de la R so that he could be seated next to the movie star."
Oh, and that's not all for the lady from the enthusiastic statesman:
After being presented with a medallion from Queen Sofia, Clinton told the audience, "I was trying to figure out exactly why I would receive this award tonight. It may be because, even though I'm not of Spanish descent, I've seen every one of Penelope Cruz's movies - and I liked them all."

Slick, Willy!

Huckabee Didn't Know About NIE Yesterday?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:30 AM

That's a day after its release, and at least several hours after a rare Bush news conference on the subject.
Kuhn: I don’t know to what extent you have been briefed or been able to take a look at the NIE report that came out yesterday ...

Huckabee: I’m sorry?

Kuhn: The NIE report, the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran. Have you been briefed or been able to take a look at it —

Huckabee: No.

Kuhn: Have you heard of the finding?

Huckabee: No.
I know the Huckabee campaign doesn't have that much cash, but use some of that new front-runner influx  to get the man a Blackberry. That's a big blow to any candidate's credibility on national security.

Huck's finding out quickly that, even for a skilled politician, it's much more brutal at the top of the game than playing the charming second-tier candidate. He's described as "bristling" at an evolution question yesterday:

Huckabee — who raised his hand at a debate last May when asked which candidates disbelieved the theory of evolution — asked this time why there is such a fascination with his beliefs.

"I believe God created the heavens and the Earth," he said at a news conference with Iowa pastors who murmured, "Amen."

"I wasn't there when he did it, so how he did it, I don't know," Huckabee said.

But he expressed frustration that he is asked about it so often, arguing with the questioner that it ultimately doesn't matter what his personal views are.

Probably a fair bristle, but the tone of press coverage has certainly changed.

Over at Hot Air, Bryan's asking of the newly anointed sorta-front-runner, why he flip-flopped on Gitmo so quickly.

Fred Thompson is hitting him hard on foreign policy, too:
“When confronted with a serious question about his lack of foreign policy experience, Mike Huckabee makes a joke. The security of Americans and our allies is no laughing matter. What Americans are looking for in their next president is a commander in chief, not a Court Jester,” added Bob Haus, Executive Director of Iowa Friends of Fred Thompson.
Ouch. I don't imagine the hits are gonna be getting any lighter from that precint in light of this:
I spoke to Rasmussen about Huckabee's rapid rise yesterday, and our chat can be found here. Key quote: "Had anybody else resonated with GOP primary voters, this would have been impossible. What Mike Huckabee is doing is validating the dream of Thompson’s supporters -  that there was a vacuum or void in the race, but Thompson didn’t grab it for whatever reason."
Of course, Huck says he's having fun, and the surge in support is showing in his Iowa offices:
His campaign headquarters in downtown Des Moines is expanding into another office in the same building. The new space is three times bigger to accommodate the surging crew of volunteers.
Huck was boasting the added endorsement of Tim LaHaye yesterday, author of the Christian novel series, "Left Behind."

But he wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism was a "cult," when asked by reporters:
Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, a one-time Southern Baptist preacher who's seen his standing in Iowa surge with Christian evangelicals' support, wouldn't say Tuesday whether he thought Mormonism — rival Mitt Romney's religion — was a cult.

"I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said during a week in which religion has become an important issue in the Republican presidential race, particularly in Iowa.

It's a stereotypical "gotcha" question from the press corps, but it seems like a smooth talker like Huckabee should be able to offer a more compassionate answer than that. Instead of ducking entirely, he could have chided the reporter for using inflammatory language, and offered that while his and Romney's religions don't agree on every tenet, there are plenty of great Americans practicing both and that's what this country's all about, yadda, yadda. But he didn't. If I didn't know better, I might suspect he's trying to benefit from some of that anti-Mormon prejudice we've been hearing about.

To his credit, he's asked a pro-Huckabee group doing robo-calls on his behalf to stop, but Romney's taking his shot on that issue nonetheless.

Welcome to the top, Mike.

Update:
Fred on a Thompson/Huckabee ticket. Heh. Fred can be great on his feet sometimes. I wish we saw more of it in debates, where he's often amusing, but not enough to overcome an apparent lack of spirit.

The Secrets to Our Success
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 8:47 AM
...with Larry Kudlow.
A significant paradigm shift has taken place in the U.S. economy over the last quarter century. During that time, the U.S. economy has been in prosperity 95 percent of the time and in recession only 5 percent. That is, the United States has had a grand total of only five negative GDP quarters in the past 25 years. In the prior two decades, the U.S. economy was mired in recession about a third of the time.
Click over for three reasons for the change. You know, since you won't hear about it on the news.

Republican Web Vid Puts Dems Back on the Bench (Bonus: Actually Amusing!)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:20 AM
Sure, the sports metaphor is a old, political go-to, but Rep. Eric Cantor makes the best of it in this genuinely amusing web video about the Dems' progress since their 2006 takeover of the House.

Cantor has shown, more than many other Republicans, a willingness to experiment with new technology to get voters involved and get messages out. The practice has paid off. Now, if a presidential candidate other than Huckabee could put out an amusing web spot, I'd be even more pleased.

SpouseWatch: The Indomitable Ego of Bubba Strikes Again!
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 4:24 PM

Hillary loooooves having Bill stumping for her. See how relaxed and confident she is?

And, this is what, strike one, two, and now three?
Bill Clinton said Tuesday that if reporters covered the candidates' public records better, his wife's presidential bid would be far ahead of her rivals.

During a campaign stop on behalf of his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former president said he can't understand why so much of the media coverage of the campaign ignores her experience—and, without naming him, the relative lack of experience of her closest Democratic rival, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

"One percent of the press coverage was devoted to their record in public life. No wonder people think experience is irrelevant. A lot of the people covering the race think it is (irrelevant)," Clinton said to students at Keene State College.

You know what would help with covering her experience?

Politically Incorrect Messages of Hanukah
Posted by: Michael Medved at 3:36 PM

The brutal truth about the holiday of Hanukah, which begins this year on December 5th, is that it is intensely and incurably politically incorrect. The heroes of the Hanukah story—the Maccabees—were uncompromising zealots and fundamentalists, vigorous representatives of the Judean “religious right” of the Second Century B.C.

There was nothing tolerant or relativistic about them: they risked their lives to take back the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from the Hellenistic multi-culturalists who had installed a variety of idols and pagan gods to provide worship alternatives. The very name Hanukah comes from the Hebrew for “dedication” or “consecration”: it’s about purification and re-commitment on a national and personal level, and standing up to misguided alien cultures, no matter how popular, seductive and powerful.

This year, when the Jewish holiday arrives nearly three weeks before Christmas, there’s a good chance to keep its bracing and challenging themes appropriately distinct from the generalized seasonal cheer.
