Fred and the Hand Jive ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:52 PM
Dwayne Horner reminds me that back on July 25, Fred Thompson "called his shot" by telling Townhall's Mike Gallagher he wouldn't raise his hand in a debate:

"Well, I won't be raising my hand, I assure you..."

Hillary: 'I'll Raise My Hand Like a Trained Monkey if you Ask Me To'
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:43 PM
Hillary takes Fred Thompson's moment-of-the-debate from yesterday-- an anti-establishment whack at the debate moderator and shallow format-- and turns it into an establishment suck-up to the debate moderator and nod to the shallow format. Well played, Senator.

"Would you like us to raised our hands on that, Carolyn? You didn't get a very good response from Republicans yesterday. We want to go on record. We believe in global warming and think it's a serious problem."

Update: Hillary says "Tom Harkin's been working like a Trojan" on a farm bill. Is anyone else uncomfortable with the simile?

Update:
Another borrrrring debate. Derbyshire is choosing life and checking out of this event.

Video of the Hillary moment, here.

Dem Debate in Des Moines: Thank You, Iowa!
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 2:34 PM
Bill Richardson stumbles: "I want to thank the people of Iowa for putting us through this...very good process." (Laughter)

Nurse Ratched seems to have softened her tone a bit, but the strict time limits are still in effect.

By the way, the Des Moines Register still can't explain why Alan Keyes was in yesterday's debate.

Update: Hillary is striiiiiident today. She's talking about rallying the American people to change the energy policy in our country, comparing it to Kennedy rallying people to support the space program. The rhetoric, while inspiring in theory, is coming off like a mildly ticked off lecture. "Why don't you stupid voters understand that we all have to get involved in exactly what I want to do, damnit? How in God's name am I behind in this state???" She sounds like she's feeling the heat.

Pat Toomey on the Huck-Flops
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:12 PM
I asked Pat Toomey, President of the Club for Growth, for a comment about this story

According to Toomey:

Huckabee is great at making pledges, but he is also great at breaking them.  In 2001, he told Arkansas “Taxes are out” but then proceeded to support higher taxes repeatedly throughout the rest of his tenure as governor.   In light of his record, taxpayers have good reason to doubt his Johnny-come-lately pledges on the presidential campaign trail.

Rudy's New Immigration Ad
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:05 PM
I like the opening sentence.  So true.  But will he finally do something?  I think it's implied that he has the leadership abilities to actually do things...

Roger Clemens: Steroid User?
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 1:03 PM
The George Mitchell steroids in baseball report will be released at 2pm.   Sorry Dems, your debate doesn't stand a chance.

UPDATE: The Yankees are going to have a bad day.
A former New York Yankees strength trainer says information he provided to the George Mitchell investigation regarding supplying Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte with steroids is included in the Mitchell report scheduled to be released later today, a source close to the trainer told ESPN The Magazine's Shaun Assael.

UPDATE: The full report is available at Major League Baseball's website.

Vote for Hillary Because Her Mom Likes Her
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:47 AM
Eh, it's a cutesy ad meant to soften an icy candidate, but if that's what they're looking to do, why not more of Hillary actually talking with her mom? That's where the softness is revealed, not in still pictures, set-up shots, and Hillary's mom voicing over that she's swell. This ad seems to suggest she can't even look natural interacting with her mom.

But the most important revelation of the ad? Hillary still lives with her parents. Devastating. Click to watch.

Why Rush Likes Fred, II
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:20 AM

The other week, I speculated that one of the reasons Rush Limbaugh likes Fred Thompson is because they have similar styles

But I think there's another reason, too.  Rush hates candidates who suck up to the "drive-by" media.  Case in point:  John McCain and Mike Huckabee are both popular with the media, and I don't think that sits well with Rush, who often notes that Republican politicians often become more liberal in order to win the media's approval.

Unlike McCain and Huckabee, during yesterday's GOP debate, Fred Thompson was the lone candidate willing to put a drive-by-media moderator in her place.

How much do you want to bet Rush talks about this today?

Did Romney Almost Have a Dean-Scream?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:10 AM
So sayeth First Read, but I have a hard time imagining any impassioned speech that includes the phrase, "real darn well" making anyone think he's a dangerous loose cannon. If anything, Romney's a cannon that could stand to be a bit looser. Here's an excerpt:
Funny enough, when Romney was wrapping up his remarks, he said the following: “You're going to do something which people don’t expect, which is give me a victory. And then I’m going to New Hampshire, where I’m pretty solidly in the lead in New Hampshire, and then I’m going to be in Nevada, and I’m going to win Nevada, and then I’m going to be in Wyoming, and I’ll win that one, and then Michigan, and we’re going to end up doing real darn well. That’s at least what I plan. Brian over here was afraid I was going to scream as I was saying that -- the Howard Dean moment, but I’m not doing that. No predictions like that, no screaming allowed…. I’m going to find you, track you down, make sure you vote in the caucuses.”

Shortly after, as Mrs. Romney tried to nudge him, he said, “Ann’s pulling me off the stage, I can tell.”

PETA's Genius PR
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:25 AM
I was on O'Reilly last night talking, in part, about PETA's latest very lame campaign. Video, here.

Here's another one for the books, along with animal slaughter = Holocaust and the "Mommy's a murderer because she cooks meat" comic book.

The newest, a knock on milk: "Got Pus? Milk does."

Lovely. The milk industry is after them to stop stealing their slogan, and I hope they win.

The New Frontrunner's Flip-Flops ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:20 AM

Heidi Przybyla from Bloomberg has an interesting piece up regarding some of Mike Huckabee’s biggest flip-flops -- including Immigration, Cuba, and (as excerpted below) a Tax Pledge:

Huckabee oversaw tax increases, including 37 percent higher sales taxes, 16 percent higher motor fuel taxes and 103 percent higher cigarette taxes, according to Americans for Tax Reform in Washington.

Tax Pledge

Huckabee may face another problem with anti-tax advocates: his past pledge not to raise taxes. ``Tax increases are out,'' Huckabee said on Nov. 14, 2001, the Associated Press reported.

In the presidential race, Huckabee signed a similar pledge, drafted by Americans for Tax Reform. Grover Norquist, president of the anti-tax group, said he hadn't heard about Huckabee's earlier pledge.

``Americans for Tax Reform was and is critical of his tax- and-spending increases,'' Norquist said. ``This is not like being born again where it washes away the sins.''

An obvious point is that if he broke previous tax pledges, what's stopping him from doing so again?
