Outgunned in Iowa: Does it Matter?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:36 AM
Jonathan Martin reports that there are already far more Democrat staffers on the ground in Iowa than Republican staffers.  On the surface this sounds like a bad sign -- and it may be.

Of course, it's also possible that this discrepancy is of little importance.  For one thing, it's already been noted by many pundits that many GOP campaigns are already writing off Iowa as a Romney win.

If that's the case, it makes sense to put your resources in other states (such as New Hampshire, South Carolina, etc.).  ... Sadly, Martin writes that this disparity is also to be found in those states.

Of course, with the exception of Hillary Clinton's campaign, the other Dems have also agreed to stay out of Michigan.  I think it's a safe bet that there are more Republican staffers on the ground in Michigan, and that's a far more important General Election state.

Still, this sounds a bit like the canary in the mine ...

Christians for Mitt?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:32 AM
From the NY Times:

A prominent evangelical supporter of Mitt Romney has written a memorandum to 150 conservative Christian leaders, warning of the prospect of Rudolph W. Giuliani or Hillary Rodham Clinton in the White House and making the case to rally around Mr. Romney.

Breaking Scandal?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:26 PM
For what it's worth, the National Enquirer is reporting that John Edwards is involved in an affair.  We shall see if this is just tabloid journalism, or if it has legs.  Remember, it was a tabloid that broke the Gennifer Flowers story ...

On Like Donkey Kong
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 6:59 PM
I'm on O'Reilly night talking about the Internets, particularly Hillary's pretty good Meathead video.

The Republican candidates need to get on the ball with this kind of thing. If Hillary can do funny, anyone can do funny. This stuff isn't laugh-out-loud, but it's a little envelope-pushing and fun. The only thing I think I've seen on the right that comes close was Fred Thompson's response to Michael Moore (pre-candidacy).

I think at least Fred and Rudy are capable of turning some of this lighter stuff out and doing a good job with it, and some of the lower-tier candidates don't have much to lose by giving it a try. We've got plenty of smart, gifted ad guys on our side who I'd imagine are capable of thinking in slightly new terms. It's a great opportunity to humanize campaigns, make the candidates into real people, and get a lot of buzz doing it. Like it or not, silly Internet video moves messages.

It's the bright side of YouTube. A viral Macaca moment is always a danger, but Internet video also gives candidates a chance to have some fun with viral videos for which they call the shots.

Shocking Combination: Good News and the U.N.
Posted by: Michael Medved at 6:00 PM

The whining and self-pity so prevalent in today’s America now face a formidable new foe: the United Nations.  The world body released a report called “State of the Future” showing that global conditions have dramatically improved by every significant measure.

The world’s increasingly capitalist economy has developed at an unprecedented rate, and people nearly everywhere do better in terms of personal income, food availability, life expectancy, literacy, infant mortality, access to health care, access to safe water and much more. At current rates of growth, the report suggests “world poverty will be cut in half between 2000 and 2015.”

In the past, grim reports about the state of the world drew screaming headlines by predicting mass starvation or environmental catastrophe. But as Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal notes, the shockingly good news in the new UN study has been “mostly ignored” by the media, reflecting a sick, destructive addiction to gloom and doom.

The Taxpayer Choice Act
Posted by: John Campbell at 2:21 PM

Today I was joined by Congressmen Paul Ryan (WI), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee and Jeb Hensarling (TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, and Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN) in introducing the AMT Repeal and Taxpayer Choice Act. This legislation is designed to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, and at the same time, give all taxpayers the choice of filing their taxes under a new, simplified tax system.

In crafting this legislation we made sure that it would accomplish these three goals. That it will:  1.) Repeal the AMT and make sure it stays gone. 2.) Not raise taxes 3.) Not engage in class warfare, asking others to take a financial hit to “Pay for” tax relief for others.  I think we have succeeded in accomplishing these goals. Below are some important points about the Taxpayer Choice Act.

The Taxpayer Choice Act will fully and permanently repeal the current AMT

Taxpayers can choose to file their taxes under the current system or pay  a new alternative simplified tax with two rates and no deductions

There is a 10% rate for joint incomes below $100,000 and a 25% marginal rate for joint incomes above $100,000

This bill will make permanent the 2001 and 2003 tax reductions and lower rates on capital gains and dividends.

This is an incredibly important piece of legislation considering the number of taxpayers that could be forced to pay the AMT in 2007. Also, at the same time, it keeps our tax revenue at its historical percentage of GDP. Without this legislation, government spending will increase in terms of our overall economy and individuals will be required to pay more taxes to keep up with this spending.

Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Charles Rangel (D-NY), has announced his intention to present “the mother of all tax bills” in the coming weeks. This Democrat proposal will effectively keep all tax increases and merely redistribute who has to pay them.

The proposal I am advocating rejects the idea that we need to continually raise taxes on people over 10 years, not only on an absolute basis but also by percentage.

'Cause it Feels So Empty Without Me
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:43 PM

As I live blogged yesterday, I enjoyed Fred Thompson's line about how, "It was getting a little boring without me.”

It came right at the end of the debate, and allowed him to end on a humorous high note.

But, in truth, yesterday's debate was the most boring debate, so far.  And the truly interesting parts (which were rare) did not involve him ...

Still, as I wrote earlier, I think Thompson "won," in the sense that he did what he needed to do (and frankly, he did exactly what his campaign manager told us he needed to do).

There is one Thompson meme I want to try my best to knock down.  A lot of pundits have been saying that, since Fred spent all this time preparing to get in the race, he should have been able to hit the ground at full speed.

But things never work out that way.  The only way to fully prepare for something, is to get in the game.  A football player can spend a ton of time in the weight room, or watching film, but he won't be up-to-speed until he plays a couple of games.

Politics is the same.  The other candidates have five debates under their belts.  We shouldn't have expected Fred to start out in game shape ...
