Fred at Club for Growth: 'I'm the Most Proven Tax-Cutter and Pro-Growth Guy Running For President'
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 1:01 PM

I'm watching Fred at the Club for Growth Conference. I'm enjoying him more than I did the last time I saw him speak. Especially during Q&A, he's had some good moments, and seemed more comfortable than with his prepared remarks. (Update: Just corrected some of my typos. I was typing as he was talking, so I botched a couple quotes. Fixed now.)

I didn't catch Rudy earlier this morning, but I'll try to find a recap. About the only thing anyone's talking about is the Perry endorsement, as opposed to the speech itself.

Have you always been a Republican?

I think it's accurate to say I've always been a Republican. My dad was a Democrat. My dad and my granddad thought that Franklin Roosevelt saved their lives.

I went to college and read "Conscience of a Conservative" and that did it for me.

I started the first young Republicans club [in my hometown]. As we say in the church, when I reached the age of accountabilty, I think it's safe to say I've been a Republican ever since.

McCain-Feingold law? Our members are concerned about free-speech limits. Some people are confused about your position on it. Should we keep the speech limits?

I've addressed that before. I've addressed that on a blog...What I've said basically is while I still think the provisions with soft money are good things but that the one you're talking about has not worked and it should be repealed...It's important to keep it in perspective. The idea was you've got to raise money for those ads the same way you raise money for candidates...It's not quite as draconian as the summary of it sometimes is, but it's still bad and we shouldn't have done it. The Supreme Court has better things to do [than parse campaign ads]...It shouldn't have been done. We went too far.

How he came to support it: In the real world that I lived in, giving large amounts of money to people who have decision-making power over you was a bad idea...I think I put a few people in jail for it, in fact...I came to find out, in politics, not only was it not a bad idea. It was absolutely necessary....With that as a basis...we placed reasonable limits. I always thought they were too low. I don't know if you'll thank me for it or not. It was my amendment that raised it from $1,000 to $2,000 and indexed it to inflation.

I thought we oughtta raise the hard money limits to a reasonable level and do away with the soft. I may change my mind about the whole thing as this campaign moves on, as people put in millions of their own money. I may change my mind about the whole thing. (laughing) I say that mostly in jest, but I think the original idea was a valid one, but we went too far, unfortunately, as often happens.

Why don't Democrats understand the entitlement disaster we're moving toward?

They do, it's just a matter of priorities, and it's so easy to demagogue. "Tax hikes for the rich." How long does it take to say that? Not long. Conservatives always have a little bit longer story to tell because it has to do with the way the world works and real solutions and human nature. That's a little bit harder to communicate in a soundbite. I think I'm gettin' a little better at it, but this is the way it's always been.

How many days a week do you have to work for the federal government? I get pretty queasy when it's more than one.

Back to MKH: I think that last answer was the strongest thing I heard from him. He started off slow, as he is wont to do, but warmed up. I really enjoyed the Q&A, and the room seemed to as well.

A Good Week For Nerds

George Lucas plans "Star Wars" for TV.

The Wii lightsaber is unveiled.

And, Halo 3 is doing so well that it's got Hollywood whining. Gamers vs. really handsome actors with multi-million-dollar paychecks. Advantage, Master Chief!

The second coming of Silicon Vally bubble signals chance for regular nerds to become really rich nerds who later buy the Dallas Mavericks and qualify as "star" enough to dance around with half-naked ballroomers on "Dancing With the Stars."

And, just because I'm nice like that, many, many pages of women modeling Princess Leia's metal bikini get-up from Return of the Jedi.

And, there was much rejoicing.

Perry and Romney: It's All About the Hair
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:45 AM
Last night, I predicted some big endorsements would be coming, and they did.  Scoring Texas Governor Rick Perry's endorsement is a pretty big deal for Rudy Giuliani's campaign.  Perry is, at least, perceived as being conservative, so this helps Rudy innoculate himself against social conservative attacks.

As I reported a month ago, Rudy has been wooing Perry for quite some time.

I am also hearing that some social conservative leaders are now upset with Perry, and are now talking about retribution.  Time will tell if this is just talk.

Why would Perry endorse Rudy?  Obvious speculation is that it puts him on the short list of running mates.  In fact, Perry will accompany Rudy to Iowa today, following Rudy's presentation at the Club for Growth.  If this doesn't further fuel speculation that he is a possible VP pick, I'm not sure what else would.

Another interesting side story here is the fact that Perry and Romney aren't close.  Some have speculated that this is due to the fact that while Romney was the head of the Republican Governor's Association (RGA), their media consultant also worked for Perry foe Carolyn Keeton Strayhorn (who was running against Perry at the time).

Personally, I think the reason may be that two dudes -- who both pay that much attention to their hair  -- could never be on the same side ...

Violence Falls In Iraq, Press Weeps for Economic State of Iraqi Gravediggers
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:32 AM
No, seriously. There are so many new and exciting ways to avoid reporting good news in Iraq, but we must thank McClatchy for this truly innovative one!
At what's believed to be the world's largest cemetery, where Shiite Muslims aspire to be buried and millions already have been, business isn't good.

A drop in violence around Iraq has cut burials in the huge Wadi al Salam cemetery here by at least one-third in the past six months, and that's cut the pay of thousands of workers who make their living digging graves, washing corpses or selling burial shrouds.
Sniff.

Wow, now that's some miss-the-point reporting. The press will call it "slice-of-life" or some such nonsense, but it's reflective of the almost unrelenting bad attitude and occasional bad faith with which the media reports the war. They're given a no-brainer positive story like "violence down," and they're not content to pad it with caveats or simply downplay it. Nooo, they have to find the obscure angle by which iraqi children of gravediggers will eat no more because of the evil American occupation.

Ridiculous.

Update:
On the other hand, credit where credit's due when they sometimes get it right. Last night, CBS honored Michael Murphy, the first Medal of Honor recipient of the Afghanistan war. Go forth and watch. An amazing story.

A New Entrant in the Race for Most Ronaldy Reaganesqueness
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:09 AM

I had no idea Obama was even eligible:

Addressing the Republican Jewish Coalition, Giuliani described Obama's offer, during a presidential debate in July, to meet as president with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.

"Then he went on to explain that Ronald Reagan negotiated with the communists," Giuliani said, pausing and sighing. "I say this most respectfully: You're not Ronald Reagan, you know?"

The audience in a downtown Washington hotel laughed and clapped.

Rudy went on to describe Reagan diplomacy:

"Here's what Ronald Reagan did before he negotiated with communists," the former New York mayor continued. "First he called them the evil empire. Then he took missiles, intermediate-range missiles ... and he put them in European cities, and he pointed the missiles at Russian cities with names on them.

"Then he said, in a very nice way, 'Let's negotiate.'"

The Obama camp slapped back by sticking Rudy for taking money to represent Citgo, an American subsidiary of Hugo Chavez's Venezuelan oil company.

A Culture of Badassery
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:04 AM
Way to go, Granny!
Unfortunately, for James Penn, 25, of Mobile, Ala., he picked the home of a feisty 81-year-old woman who almost took him out with her trusty handgun when she discovered the homeless man in her laundry room.

Ethel Sanders said she heard noises in the laundry room and, with gun in hand, went to investigate. She shot Penn, who was standing in his underwear, after he came at her.

Sanders then fell to the ground and dropped the gun, which Penn picked up and pointed at her while he retrieved his clothes from the washer. He fled the scene, but was caught later at a nearby community center.
The intruder's expected to survive to be charged with burglary.

Rudy's Endorsement...
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 8:42 AM
Rick Perry, governor of Texas.

The lede: he trusts him on judges:

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday won the endorsement of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, despite their differences on abortion rights.

Perry, an abortion opponent, said his biggest concern had been Giuliani's support for abortion rights but that he was satisfied Giuliani would appoint judges who view the issue conservatively.

"The one (issue) that I wanted to hear him give me an answer and look me right in my eyes was that issue of who can I expect, what type of individual can I expect on the Supreme Court," Perry said at a news conference with Giuliani.

"He clearly said ... you can look for people like Scalia and Roberts and Alito. Let me tell you, I can live with that," Perry said, referring to conservative Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Perry said when he buys a pickup truck, he doesn't rule it out simply because it has one option he doesn't like.

Will it help going into the Values Voters conference?

Rudy's Endorsement Today ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:40 AM
The Giuliani campaign has been playing up the fact that there may be a big endorsement coming for the Mayor.

Word on the street is that he has requested a special guest to introduce him when he speaks at the Club for Growth today.  Could it be?

Rudy: Circa 1996
Posted by: Jonathan Garthwaite at 7:18 AM
"Well, I'm a Republican mayor, but I"m really not. I'm the mayor of New York City. I ran as a Republican, I ran as a Liberal — which really confuses all kinds of people — and I ran as an Independent, as part of the Independent Party, which actually is now the party that's supporting Ross Perot. So I ran a fusion candidacy, like my predecessor Fiorello LaGuardia. So I'm not the most partisan of Republicans."

Big Week For GOP Candidates
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:13 PM
It's a busy week for Republican campaigns.

Tomorrow, the Club for Growth -- arguably the most effective fiscal conservative group -- will meet.  Two days later, the Family Research Council -- arguably the most effective social conservative group -- will host its Value Voters Summit.

What should we expect?  My prediction is there will be lots of news to come out of both events.

Look for high-level endorsements from conservative dignitaries, as well as more sharp elbows being thrown from the candidates, as they seek to portray themselves as the conservative candidate ...

Ogonowski Onward: Ray of Hope for GOP?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 6:05 PM
It's judgment day in Massachusetts today, where Republican Jim Ogonowski (endorsed by Rightroots) is running an unexpectedly close race against Democrat Niki Tsongas. Turnout is expected to be low and GOTV important as ever:
City and town clerks said turnout is likely to be a few points higher than it was for the Sept. 4 primaries, when only 18 percent of the district's voters cast their ballots the day after Labor Day.

In raw numbers, that means it should be higher than the combined 70,000 who turned out for last month's party primaries, though it may not hit 100,000. By comparison, more than 216,000 residents from the district voted in last year's general election, which included statewide races for governor and other general officers.

Ognowski's biography-- retired Air Force lieutenant and brother of one of the pilots killed on 9/11-- his deft messaging and hard work have put him within single digits of Tsongas in a heavily Democratic district that hasn't elected a Republican since 1972. As a result, he's reportedly working GOTV harder than Tsongas, whom he calls "Queen Tsongas" to point out her sense of entitlement to the seat vacated by retiring Martin Meehan.

Democrat Niki Tsongas, the other headliner in the race, employed a slightly less frenetic pace, visiting several senior centers and holding an ice cream social as she sought to claim for herself the House seat once held by her late husband and 1992 presidential contender, Paul Tsongas.

"Tomorrow’s it," Niki Tsongas, 61, told several silver-haired listeners at the Dracut senior center. "Tomorrow’s decision day."

Yet while Ogonowski flitted about looking for support, planning 40 rapid-fire stops on Monday, Tsongas continued to pound away on her opponent for refusing to state how he would vote — if elected — on a presidential override scheduled for Thursday.

His strategy may light a path for Republicans through an increasingly bleak-looking 2008 campaign season:
But he has also added a theme that could help GOP hopefuls next year, particularly those competing for open seats: a relentless chorus of complaints about the competency of Congress and the culture of Washington in general.

“This election is clearly a referendum on our Congress - it’s not working for us,” Ogonowski said in an interview last week. “I’ve been asking every single group I meet in front of, ‘Anyone here like the job Congress is doing?’ I have yet to have a person in the Fifth District tell me they like it.”
In even better news, Ogonowski's good numbers come at a much lower cost than Tsongas', which is very helpful indeed for our poor, penuried Republicans.
As of Sept. 26, Tsongas had raised $1.93 million, compared with $434,000 for Ogonowski.
Help us, Obi-Wan Ogonowski. You're our only hope. He's obviously gone very distant from the Iraq war and Bush and portrayed himself as an outsider in a way many of our guys can't do, but the close numbers in an unexpected venue are instructive.

Update: A Red-Stater reports from the ground in Massachusetts.
