Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Before anybody tries to change the world to save polar bears, which the Department of Interior listed as "threatened" last week, somebody should figure out how many polar bears there are.

When the world's foremost polar bear scientists gathered in Alaska in 1965 for their first international meeting, they confronted a cold fact: They did not know.

Edward Carlson, then-chief of wildlife research at the U.S. Department of Interior, opened the session by quoting a speech by Sen. E.L. "Bob" Bartlett, D-Alaska, who hosted the conference.

"I am informed that at the present time there are no accurate or reliable figures available on the total world polar bear population or on the size of the annual kill," Bartlett had said.

The Canadian delegation, according to the meeting's proceedings, summarized the varying extant estimates.

"Scott and others (1959) concluded that about 2,000 to 2,500 polar bears existed near the Alaskan coast," said the Canadians. "By extrapolation, they arrived at a total polar bear population of 17,000 to 19,000 animals. Vspensky (1961) estimated the world polar bear population at 5,000 to 8,000 animals. Harington (1964) ... believes the world polar bear population is well over 10,000."

That was state-of-the-art polar-bear science four decades ago.

In 1968, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), following up on the Alaska meeting, convened the "first official meeting" of its global Polar Bear Specialist Group. "Top on the list of research priorities is the urgent need for more precise knowledge about the size of the world's polar bear population," said a report on the meeting in the IUCN Bulletin.

In 1970, after IUCN's second global polar bear meeting, the scientists said in a statement that "insufficient data were presented on which to base precise estimates on the abundance of the species."

In 1972, they said, "No estimate of the total bear population was made by the meeting, but bears in some regions were reported as abundant and in certain regions as needing greater protection."

In 1993, their press release noted, "The state of knowledge of individual subpopulations ranges from good to almost nothing." Then it said that "the world population of polar bears was thought to be between about 21,000 and 28,000."

In other words, it "was thought" in 1993 that the lower range for the polar bear population was 2,000 bears greater than the upper range estimated in 1959.

In 1997, the experts lifted the lower range by 1,000 bears and dropped the upper range by 1,000. "In summary," said their release, "the world population of polar bears was thought to be between about 22,000 and 27,000."

In 2001, they restated the same lower-range estimate: "The current minimum estimate of the total number of polar bears occupying the 20 distinct populations in the circumpolar Arctic is 22,000."

At their 2005 meeting, the last with published proceedings, the experts had an interesting discussion about what kinds of estimates should be including in a "status" table describing the polar bear population.

"There was considerable debate and disagreement about the use of point estimates for subpopulations that we really do not know much about," said the proceedings.

"There was further discussion and some agreement that there should be separate columns for estimates based on science and estimates based on something else," it said.

"Something else"? What "something" other than science might a polar bear scientist be tempted to use in estimating the polar bear population?

Well, "TEK" for one. "There was some confusion as to how the estimates based on TEK were derived," said the proceedings.

Now, "TEK" may look like an acronym for something technical -- but it isn't. It is "traditional ecological knowledge" -- or what local people say about polar bears. In some cases, researchers run "simulations based on the minimum size necessary to support local knowledge of subpopulation trends," said the proceedings, noting that estimates like these "have unknown and in most case inestimable errors."

In the end, the scientists wisely punted on presenting a conclusion about the polar-bear population trend for six of the 19 subpopulations they now believe exist, saying the data was "deficient" in these areas. "No subpopulation inventories have been conducted in East Greenland and therefore the size of the population is not known," said their population "status table," for example.

However, the report did say: "The total number of polar bears worldwide is estimated to be 20,000-25,000."

Almost 50 years ago, polar bear scientists first estimated there might be as many as 19,000 polar bears. Three years ago, they estimated there might be as few as 20,000.

Who knows? By the time the government decrees polar bears not merely threatened, but endangered, there may be as few as 30,000 roaming the Arctic wastes.

Ice Seal Facts
It seems that the worry is over the ice melts in teh Arctic and Antarctic regions. The concern is that if the ice melts (which it does every year) that the polar bears won't be able to hunt the seals on the ice to survive.

The Ice Seals only need the ice during their calving season, which runs from March thru May. By June all of the calves should be ready to go in the water and hunt for themselves. After that, most of the seals spent the pigger part of their lives IN THE WATER. It would seem that by that time, the polar bear would find slim pickings on the ice, anyway.

It is just now getting warm enough in the lower Northwest Territories of Canada to melt ice ABOVE the waterline.

Now think about this. A cooling period has now been predicted that may last for the next couple of decades. This could mean that the Arctic melts could come later than they have been. With the Polar Bear population increasing and their having better access to the ice, those cute adorable little seal pups are in greater dange than they have been, not to mention their moms.

And I refuse to believe that a polar bear won't kill something else (like a carribeu) for food, if it can't get a seal. And since they cqan dive down in the water, it's posible that they could go crabing in the shallows along the shorelines.

Don't you think it's about time to take up arms and start shooting the grave diggers.

estimates
We see this sort of thing often in trying to quantify things for which we have little or no data. It's not unusual to see a government report on estimated costs of something "in the 8-to-15 Billion dollar range." Only having $8 billion myself, I can tell you there's a vast difference in the two. Like our information in the Muddle East, it seems our protectors in Washington have acted on insufficient, if not inaccurate, information. Send that boy back to Texas, where he can get accurate censuses on his cattle by counting the legs and dividing by four.

Who mentioned bisons? I just had my first buffalo meat the other day! Good! Oh that is not the same?

polar bears
these cuddly little creatures actually hunt men who try to hunt them. they are the only species that does this. and these idiots, who don't even know how many of them are out there, want to make them an endangered species?

What?
No concerns from the greenies about UCC (Ursopogenic Climate Change) caused by increasing ursine flatulence generated CO2 levels?

They will probably want to commission a UNIPUCC (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Ursopogenic Climate Change) to study the 'emerging science' of UCC.

Screw the bears, what about the nuts?
It's a shame the eco-nuts and environmentalists aren't endangered. That would be the best news for the environment in years. Just think, we could put little tags in their ears and lock them up in cages for their own protection.

Someday, should nature recuperate from their nonsensical protection, they could be let back into the wild. Of course, at that point they would no longer be threatened, and their herds would need periodic thinning by hunters.

I plan to apply for my hunting license now. Imagine a nice eco-nut head mounted over the fireplace.

George, the plan is...

All life on earth is carbon based.

Polar Bear Fuel
I imagine that Polar Bears store up a lot of fat. As the Polar Bears overpopulate the world they can be "mined" for their fat content. The fat can be burned for fuel. Of course the fat will contain carbon so the environmental whackos may complain but then the whole world structure is carbon based. Are human beings doomed because they also are carbon based? Is carbon evil?

You ask how they get the government to do these things. It is simple, they become the government. Take the Alar case I illustrated above. The initial wrongful actions were taken by the EPA in violation of their own rules for creating "studies".

Now why would a supposed neutral federal agency do inaccurate and fraudulent work? Could it be because the agency in question is filled with eco-idiot zealots who worship at the alter of Gaia? Suppose you are one of these green zealots just graduating from those great liberal manufacturing dens of mediocrity called college. Where would you wish to go to work? Who will you send your resumes to? Especially if you graduated with your liberal degree in “environmental studies”. Why you are going to go to work for the government and the EPA in order to save the world from all those evil corporate polluters that you have been trained to hate over your entire lifetime.

So you wind up at a regulatory agency who really runs the government programs.

The best way...
...to get an accurate count of polar bears would be for the rig workers to count them while drilling in ANWAR.

Since
0ver 32000 scientists have signed a petiton against the so called dangers of GW, where are you gettinging YOUR PROOF that man made GW exists?

My dear None...
Heck if I know what to do about it.

Only thing I can think of is if we could get 15-20%, maybe 20-25 million taxpayers, to change their tax deduction declarations at their places of employment, claiming enough dependants that no taxes are withheld, saving the appropriate amount of money from the increased take-home pay to cover the taxes owed, but withhold that amount from the government, circulate a signed petition of grievances to the Congress, demanding among other things, a balanced-budget amendment, term-limits for federally elected official, the line-item veto, a flat tax not to exceed 20% of income, and a constitutional provision allowing for the electoral recall of judges, and a statutory review process for beaureaucratic edicts issued by the administrative appointees which result in so much of the idiotic regulation of our lives without true representation......among other things.

Hey George
You keep forgetting '...most humble and...'in your sign off!
Seriously, I like your posts! Well informed and along with others, keep me thinking.
It is wonderful to know there are plenty of Americans who are not taken in by the enviro's BS.
And, you are correct: ad infinitum absurdium!
Can we stop it?
Vic, thanks. In the daily deluge of enviro-driven, media abetted hysteria, I had forgotten about the 'Alar' scare.
Besides our posting, what to do about the non-sense?
We blame the enviros, but how is this minority able to tell OUR government how to act concerning this laundry list of abuses heaped on the rest of us?
Where is the payoff for our Representatives and Senators?
Blackmail? Bribery? Company stock? Where? Follow the money, there'll be the answer.

Thank you, Vic...
for your excellent presentation to the class.

What shall we discuss next? So much silliness to debunk?

Class, are we all familiar with Paul Ehrlich and his 1968 book "The Population Bomb".

Please explain and elaborate, and remember to show all of your work. You may now begin.

Yes, the good old Alar fraud of 1989. A combination of eco-idiots and MSM liars got together to bankrupt numerous apple growers in the U.S. and then slide out of the civil suit by a court ruling on a technicality.

First the EPA performed a fraudulent study of the product. The study was performed using methodologies in violation of their own rules. i.e. They dosed their rats with a dose of Alar at a level 4 times the toxic level of Alar in order to produce the ‘cancer” and then listed it as a potential cancer agent. By the dose levels used children would have had to drink 19,000 quarts of apple juice a day to get the equivalent dose. (They would have drowned long before they got cancer or died from the runs).

Everyone in the scientific community said the study was flawed and should be removed. (More consensus, but since it didn’t conform to the “green thinking” it was ignored). Nonetheless, the EPA ordered the phase out of Alar.

Meanwhile 60 minutes, that great icon of the lying MSM picked up on and broadcast their normal hit piece listing all of the “bad” findings. A normal and truthful news agency would have done a hit piece on the eco-idiots at the EPA but this was CBS so they had to attack “corporate apple farmers”.

The scare generated an estimated 275,000,000 in losses including bankruptcy for many growers. All on the alter of more junk science. And the legacy still lives on because no substitute has been found and the liars at the EPA have never removed the fraudulent ban. To do so now would admit lying and subject them to more civil action.

Now, how about the Ozone Hole fraud?

Polar Bears of the World Unite!
Why not assign the polar bear counting effort to the Florida ballot counters? That would be fun.

Luckily, the polar bears themselves pay little attention to what we do or say. They'll survive as they have for millennia through all the varying climate changes. They'll adapt.

So, forget the great polar bear scare and start thinking about our economy. These poorly thought-out efforts at bogus environmental causes create most economic havoc and disruption. What they really want is to stop northern oil drilling.

With the continued cessation of this promising drilling and the efforts to stop new power plants, especially nuclear, the environmentalists are more responsible for the increased gas and power costs, food costs, and every other cost around than any politicians.

Let's give the polar bears membership in Al Gore's cult, Greenpeace, and other noisy groups. They couldn't run them any worse than they are now.

My Estimate ....
Eceryone else is doing it! Thus, I will take a WAG at the number of polar bears! There are more than the number of people in our Congress and less than the number of Obama worshipers! How's that?

Number of Bears
It is agreed that there are twice as many bears now than there was in 1970. This is certainly justification to make them 'threatened'.

Speaking of threatened, I suppose this will mean that any Eskomo who is attacked will have to let the bear eat him now rather than shoot it. I've heard at least one enviro (sounds like a disease, doesn't it?) sat that about mountain lions. His argument was that there were too many humans and not enough cats.

SAVE
SAVE THE WHALES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SAVE THE POLAR BEARS !!!!!!!!!!!

SAVE THE GOOD OLE BOYS !!!!!!!!!!

FACTS.
This is really NOT about Global Warming or The Polar Bear Population at all .That HAS NEVER what this has been about that in the least .
If it was they would be drilling for Oil now BUT they have decided NOT TO DO NO MATTER WHAT THE PRICE . After all that say they are for the Middle Class ? HARDY ...THIS IS ABOUT THEIR IDEALISM AND THE LEFT WAR WAR ON Capitolism . YOU (C) THROUGH REGULATIONS AND TAXES MAKING THIS COUNTRY FAR LESS COMPETIVE .
THIS IS has ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE BIGGER PICTURE ..THEIR LOVE OF MARXISM ............JUST LOOK AT OUR COLLEGES AND BLACK WANTS .
It is really about bigger Government running our lives Womb to Tomb That is what Marxism has aleways been about ..CONTROL OF THE ALL THERE IS .
In others words you get full blown Maxism from our Liberal/ Socialist in this Country and Congress through Regulation , Activist Judges and a Liberal controlled congress with Comarde Oboma heading up this country .
WAKE UP AMERICA ... PANTS ON FIRE .

Does anybody out there...
remember alar?

Crying
And then, Mr. Greenjeans, aka, John McLame, bought into the whole Algore thing, so expect no relief from high gasoline prices during his administration. In fact, if one is a conservative, we can expect not much from his in any other area. A crying shame.

Dumbing down of America-A single cartoon
A single animated cartoon substitutes for what little scientific knowledge we have. Yesterday's school children are todays voters.
Critical thinking is simply not taught in school. For the most part it is not taught in colleges or universities. If it exists it's an elective. So here we are. People are literally voting themselves into the poor house because of an Al Gore cartoon.

Better Tell ALF
I cant wait to see the eyes of the Martians when AL GLOBULL WARMING Gore and MCSHAME tell them that they need to quit drive those Martian SUVS because their ICECAPS on Mars is melting and they may be killing the Martian POLAR BEARS also. Maybe they can claim that Martian AIDES is killing them. Maybe Alf will get a reprieve since he eats CATS, but god forbid if he ate POLAR BEARS

WHAT A JOKE just to get peoples money. Hell what happened dont they think we pay enough as it is for TAXES.

Warning re eating Polar Bears
As Global Warming wreaks its toll on us, the starving multitudes will eventually be driven to eating the one remaining protein source--Polar Bears.

When that day comes, be forewarned! Polar Bear liver is laced with huge and toxic amounts of vitamin A. Dont--DO NOT--eat Polar Bear liver.
It will kill you.

Watch this space for announcement of my forthcoming recipe book: Ten Eco-friendly Ways to Cook Polar Bear.

Wonder
I wonder how many of them BOLLYWOOD people are hiding their POLAR BEAR SKIN RUGS when they hold these GLOBULL WARMING MEETINGS. I havent seen a movie stars house that if you see their fireplace it usually has a POLAR BEAR SKIN RUG lying in front of it.

But its do as I say not as I do when it comes to LIBS and their EMVIRO Buddies anyway.

Can we have them put in jail for buying away what them claim is dieing away.

So if I...
...drive my gas-guzzling Corvette around in circles with no particular destination just for the hell of it, crank the AC down to sixty, leave the patio door standing wide open while grilling big hunks of meat over really smoky charcoal...

...how many polar bears have I killed?

...I mean, like, you know, I'm just wondering...

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

Polar Brears and AIDS
I think that when a country that is so ate up with thinking that if everything is dieing off ought to get put on its own endangered list. AMERICA.

Its like we hear everyday how AIDS is killing everyone in Africa and then a report comes out that the Population in Africa has tripled just like the Polar Bears have more than tripled.

Can someone please tell me why our country has become the softies of ther WORLD, I can LIBERALS and their ENVIRO BUDDIES.

Wait until the elections and they have a Polar Bear on stage crying and making the American people look more foolish than we already do to thr rest of the World.

I have another ??? for ya. why would anybody in the World be scared of our country taking them out when half of our country HATES AMERICA.(LIBS) Now put that in your POLAR BEAR {PIPE and drown it along with all those people making the population of Africa triple with their AIDES killing everyone.

Why not...
...have Ted Turner and CNN send some of the bison he is raising in Montana, which no one except a few pointy-heads in Manhattan and Los Angeles wants to eat, up to the Artic so the Eskimos can eat them instead of polar bears?

I'm sorry if that seems simplistic, I mean, like, you know, I'm just asking...

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

Why not...
...just stop the Eskimos from killing the bears?

...wouldn't that have a little quicker impact than trying to change the climate through the expenditure of trillions of dollars and then waiting for a few decades to see if the bears care?

I mean, like, I''m just wondering...

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

DONT CARE
I dont care if there are any Polar Bears or not but when our Education systems logic is to SCARE CHILDREN(8 yrs old) and have them coming home crying that the POOR POLAR Bears are all dying and then we see this report of how they have grown from 6000 to over 25000 in the last 30 yrs what gives these ENVIROMENTALIST/SOCIALLIST teachers the right to scare our Children,. As a REP im used to them using children and sick old people to push their agendas but they need to leave our Children and Grandchildren alone. Its hard enough for our children and grandchildren to learn the basics but to scare them ought to be against the LAW. Teachers are not there to teach our children their PROPAGANDA. I live in Fl and Teachers already are complaining about the FCAT testing that is required here in Fl because it also grades the teachers ability to TEACH NOT PREACH.

Dude
Some recent graduates of Washington University went to the Stl zoo to protest the incarceration of Polar Bears due to the recent acknowledgement that they are endangered.

After slipping on a lot of crap they were able to reach the bears den where they were immediately eaten.

A zoo spokesman denies the event happened, but said the bears are not very hungry right now.

He did say they have been drinking a lot more coke.

BREAKING NEWS! UPDATE
Washington, D.C.
-AP

The controversy surrounding the surprise announcement by the Department of the Interior to reverse course and remove the polar bear from its Endangered Species List continued to grow today.

The bears were removed from the list earler today after large numbers of the creatures were discovered vacationing in Mexico.

Presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) weighed in on the issue from the campaign trail in Oregon. Senator Obama talked privately with reporters after speaking at a campaign rally before some 765,000 supporters where, incidentally, an estimated 600,000 persons had to be revived after fainting.

Citing the plight of the bears as a sure sign of the hopelessness enveloping the entire hemisphere, Senator Obama promised "sweeping change".

"These are typical white bears, clinging to their tropical drinks and seafood, who cannot be expected to understand what is needed to preserve their own well-being", the dynamic and handsome young Senator declared to his entranced admirers. Obama concluded his remarks to reporters by stating that "if elected in November, I will bring change that all bears can believe in".

We will continue to follow this story as developments emerge.

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

Anything to win
Don't allow oil; blame GW and Republican war for high prices. Don't close Mexican border, when terrorist attacks happen and gangs kill our children; blame GW. Raise the corporate and capital gains tax; lose companies, blame Republicans. Will the dems destroy our country in their lust for power?

Tibby: Oil Shale
The same mental defectives will not allow the refinement of oil shale.

In past posts I cited the fact that from an "engineering economics" standpoint, it would be cost effective to extensively refine oil shale (there is 4x the amount of oil contained in oil shale deposits spanning Utah, Wyoming, Montana, etc. than in all the middel east) when a barrel of oil exceeds $90. Oil futures are now at $140 & the same environmentalists will block the construction of oil shale refineries.

tibby: Bravo
Exactly.

Diversions
This search for protection of the polar bear is more about prevention of drilling in ANWR and other like places.

It is a diversion from the true intent of the environmentalists.

Tibby

Scientists disagree w/man made warming
Polar bears will be OK. The bronze age and medieval periods were much warmer, but most scientists do no believe in man made global warming:
1)GW(global warming)sheeple rely upon Al Gore, who had subpar grades and the UN IPCC. Isn't this the same UN who pretended to be benevolent in Iraq, then stole 20 billion dollars intended to feed the starving children.
2)Over 400 prominent scientists, who outnumbered IPCC GW proponents 8 to 1, expressed their disagreement with the IPCC in a US Senate report.
3)The late Professor Frederick Seitz, the past president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, started the Petition Project, which has almost 10,000 PHD scientists who disagree with GW; 15 times more than are seriously involved in the U.N.'s campaign to "vilify hydrocarbons.
4)100 prestigious geologists, physicists, meteorologists, and other scientists wrote U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon last December. They also noted that “today’s computer models cannot predict climate. Ban Ki Moon responded "In stark contrast to the often repeated assertion that the science of climate change is 'settled,' significant new peer-reviewed research has cast even more doubt on the hypothesis of human-caused global warming.'

I could go on and on.

Do polar bears need ice?
I have not yet seen a zoo built a polar bear exhibit that includes ice flows so they don't drown. They seem to reproduce just as well in Atlanta and San Diego as they do in the artic.

The polar bear if we can be geologic records, has survived not only the last several ice ages, but the warm periods inbetween.

Now there are reports of inter-racial marraiges between polar bears and brown bears. Apparently global warming is doing more to end discrimination between white and brown races than busing did for humans!

BREAKING NEWS! - RULING REVERSED
Washington, D.C.
-AP

In a surprise announcement today, U.S. Department of Interior spokesman Dimmitt Bumdas disclosed that the polar bear has been removed from the Endangered Species List. The move amounted to a reversal of action taken by the Department just days ago.

A somewhat sheepish Mr. Bumdas announced that "the whole thing was a false alarm". Questioned further by reporters, Bumdas stated that "the reduced numbers of polar bears recently observed in the Arctic regions apparently resulted from a large number of the bears having stowed away in the cargo hold of a Carnival Cruise Line vessel and travelling to the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, where the creatures were discovered lounging on area beaches, slurping pina coladas, and raiding local fish markets".

Bumdas called the behavior of the bears "inexplicable.

The Department of Interior spokesman then surprised those in attendance by calling for a new federally-funded program to "correct this very disturbing problem".

Interior is calling for the program, estimated to cost some $500 billion over the next fifteen years, to corral the vacationing bears and return them to the northern ice floes "where they are supposed to be", according to Bumdas.

The plan includes, the spokesman continued, a re-education component wherein the bears will be intstructed by federal bear instructors to understand "that red snapper and grouper DO NOT taste just as good as salmon and seals, and that the idea that summering in the Yucatan is somehow preferable to clambering about on frigid ice floes is, well, simply misguided".

We will continue to follow this emerging story as further details emerge.

Your Obedient Servant,

Global warming liars beware:
I vow that the next lying sack of human feces that I encounter who starts quacking about how global warming is going to "kill us all", and it's all our fault, I am going to punch in the face.

It is now May 21st, and I STILL need to spend money on heating my house because it is freakin' stupid COLD! EVERY SINGLE scientific organization of note that records temperatures has now come out and admitted that they've been lying all along, and that this year is set to be one of the COLDEST in decades. These same organizations are now unanimous in saying that not only has the planet not warmed since 1998, but it has actually COOLED, and they are expecting AT LEAST another DECADE of COOLING.

It has become plainly obvious that the ONLY people still squeeking about global warming are FASCISTS of the same ideology of those who were responsible for banning DDT. All kinds of so-called "environmentalists", a few decades ago, began puking lies about the "dangers" of DDT -- perhaps the most effective, yet cheaply produced, pesticide in history. They claimed it caused cancer and damaged the environment. Well, after ALL of their claims were PROVEN to be lies, these very same people -- people from Greenpeace, People for the American Way, PETA, and more -- then STILL said DDT should STILL be banned. Why? Because, in THEIR words, "it would be an effective means of population control" in Africa. They wanted DDT to be banned because in doing so, they knew millions of "darkies" would die slow and painful deaths.

These are the VERY SAME people pushing the "we need to return to the 7th century to save us from falling into the sun" agenda.

So be warned: bloodthristy, fascist monsters might want to stear clear of me when you quack your LIES about "global warming". I'm sick of you little pukes advocating genocide.

Markus
Since the artic ice has been decreasing according to the religion of AGW and the polar bear population has been increasing according to the enterior department that would put contradick ALL assertions that decrease in ice will harm these stupid bears.

Are you ready tyo be one of the bear census takers?

I'm just waiting
for someone to propose the first sasquatch sanctuary as a means of protecting an area. They obviously need more protection because reports of sasquatch attack are so rare (outside of western Canadian beer commercials).

aristotle
Thanks for the welcome chuckles. Though there are other Swiftian writers here, your posts are doing a good job of staying realistic enough to be on the funny side rather than overkill.

I hope that was your intention.

What number is...
enough polar bears, what number, Aristotle?
Maybe you should volunteer to help with an actual head count, if it concerns you so much, as suggested by Vic. Good luck!
Realist and 3wire: Yes, what do we do when the polar bear population decides people are alot easier to hunt than other prey? Alligators, coyotes, and other bears are learning this. Those Poll takers would make good appetizers, and a fast learning curve for the polar bears, Vic. Great idea, and it also would help accomplish the enviro's goal of lowering 'carbon footprints', one footprint at a time.

Despute it!
So, I've just been branded an "eco-idiot" for saying that warming in the arctic is going to kill a lot of polar bears. Is that like being stupid - but in a ecological way?

The logic is pretty straight-forward: Less ice cover makes it more difficult for polar bears to hunt. Ie, more polar bears will die.

I am pretty sure though that enough will survive and switch to other sources of protein to keep the population viable.

I am more worried about the effects of warming on the non-cuddly animals such as fish, insects and birds.

Murderers!
All you conservatives probably burned ants with magnifying glasses. You ecoterrorists.

The solution
Since we are not sure of the hard numbers of the polar bears and this has now become a major issue for the government to waste money on we need a Polar Bear Census Department under the normal census department.

The census bureau should go up and down the West Coast and also in the major colleges and environmental foundations and hire volunteers as census takers. These people should be like other employees that the environmental agencies hire. They should have a dedication to environmental issues bordering on religion.

Their mission will be to travel to the habitat of the polar bears and interview each polar bear “household” for number of bears living there, ages, sex, ethnicity, income in fishes ate, and other vital factors.

After all, if we do this for humans, surely we can do it for these cute and beleaguered bears.

Every time one of you eco-idiots say something is "indesputable" after 10 minutes of investigation one will find the opposite. Don't you people get tired of being branded as liars all the time.

Save the cuddly animals!
Granted - the polar bear is the “cause of the day”. Personally there are many other not-so-cute species that I am more concerned about. However, I believe that we also need to focus on some of the symbolic issues.

For example – tigers, polar bears, or bald eagles have no economic value outside of some marginal and very local tourism revenues. However, it would sadden me greatly if any of those species lost their natural habitat.

I guess that it can be seen as a test of sorts of our humanity to preserve the world as we found it. So far I know of two mammals that I have seen that my kids will never get the chance to – the West African black rhino and the Chinese river dolphin. While this is hardly the end of the world – the kids don’t know what they are missing and there are other rhinos – I still can't help to think that it is a sad testament to our times.

On narwhals
There was a National Geographic article a few months back on the utterly irresponsible hunting of narwhals by Inuit. Their 'traditional, earth-conscious lifestyle' apparently involves lining up on the banks of inlets and taking potshots with high-powered rifles at any narwhal that swims by. Most narwhals are only injured and swim away to die later. Many and possibly most of those that ARE killed sink or are otherwise unrecoverable.
This is characteristic: in Alaska, I saw the 'Native Americans' using powerboats and seines to wreak havoc on spawning salmon -- a practice wisely denied to mere white folk, of course (or black folk, for that matter).

Where is the widespread condemnation? It is absent. Why?

Because in some circles conserving species is less important than condemning actions. And while condemning the descendants of Europeans is desirable, apparently few environmentalists have the guts to condemn North American indigs. So the environmental movement ignores the declining numbers of one species while crying crocodile tears over the doubtful decline of another. Shows the strength of environmentatlist principle.

To Markus
That global warming will help other species is also pretty obvious. Why pick one species over another? Because the one is fuzzy and neat-looking?
Goodness knows it often appears that environmentalists make their decisions purely on emotional preference.

But
shouldn't we save them? Doesn't any one care or understand? How would you feel if you were a polar bear? People who only think about numbers don't really care about them or understand their plight. How would you feel, swimming without the North Pole in sight or a local berg around? You'd be confused.

Selective data...
While it is difficult to estimate the number of polar bears for several reasons I think most of what we could call the experts are in agreement on two things:

1) There are more polar bears today. Some even say that there are a lot more polar bears.

2) The reason that polar bear population has increased is because of environmental protection activities - especially the limits on hunting.

A lot of research must have gone into writing this article but yet there is no mention of something that a 10 minute Google session would turn up.

The reason that environmentalist are concerned today is that polar bears face a loss of habitat because of global warming. That a warmer climate will kill of a lot of polar bears is undisputable - no matter what the actual polar bear population might be in numbers.

Action without understanding
A lazy fool is of little harm; a lazy competent person makes no difference, good or bad; an energetic competent person is a positive benefit.

The greatest danger is an energetic fool.

To be an energetic fool in conservation is simply to make sweeping, economy-impacting, multi-billion-dollar decisions on the environment while lacking knowledge of the true state of the environment, and lacking understanding of the factors governing the environment.

And that is precisely what alarmists frequently want to do.

This post is not a clarion call for an intensive policy of inaction. We CAN and have harmed the environment in ways that are bad for animals and humans, and we need to do better. But demanding protections when we demonstrably cannot know whether they are needed is wasteful of effort -- and quite possibly harmful.

The case of the polar bears is a relatively innocuous case, of course.
Frankly, global warming may be the best example. How have we decided that the climate characteristic of the last century (merely one out of over 50,000,000 centuries of earth history) is the 'optimum' which must be preserved at any cost? This decision appears to be based on ego -- the Greens have decided that the climate of THEIR brief lives must be the perfect one, worthy of beggaring their children in order to preserve.

The greatest danger is an energetic fool.

King liberal
I don't appreciate your parody on such a sensitive issue. When I was a wee boy, my Great Grandpappy gave me a fuzzy polar bear stuffed animal that I named snowflake. Since then I have always been aware of the plight of the polar bear due to CO2 terrorists(those who don't care about global warming). Even though polar bears have doubled in numbers, I cannot get that picture out of my head from Gore's movie of the fatigued polar bears swimming for their lives. Why do conservatives care that 50 million babies have been murdered through abortion in the US, when there arent ever enough polar bears?

Polar Bears and Alligators
We're up to our hips in protected 'gators. I can't guess why polar bears need similar protection. But at least the threatened designation will minimize any chance of drilling in McCain's "pristine" areas. That will make OPEC happy, even if we sue them in accordance with the latest congressional madness.

Population counts
We'll know just as soon as they begin eating little children, just like California Mountain Lions, and Coyotes, and New Jersey Bears. Aren't environmentalists cute when they are mounted on Walnut or Oak planks?
