Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

I was asked recently - by a child porn advocate, no less - why I write books with chapter titles that are so “offensive.” Citing two such chapter titles – “Fag Hags and Rainbow Flags” and “The Liar, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” – the child porn advocate asked what some of my fellow UNC professors had done to make me sound so “nasty.” I think the question is worth answering.

Put simply, I use provocative language in chapters (more often in columns) criticizing a small minority of my fellow professors for two reasons: 1) because they are proponents of fascism, and 2) because the UNC administration is too cowardly to confront fascist professors due to political correctness - the principal means of enforcing academic fascism.

Let me be more specific by relying upon a recent example involving one of our more authoritarian UNC professors.

Students taking a criminology course approached me after the professor banned (fortunately in writing) the use of the word “mankind” as “sexist.” Students were threatened specifically with point deductions for every single use of the word in exams or papers. Unfortunately, students did not stand up to the professor. Now I have learned that the professor has adopted another rule – this one banning use of the terms “BC” and “AD.”

The professor in question told the students that using “BCE” and “CE” is now a “convention.” Of course, it is simply incorrect to say that prohibiting students from using BC/AD and forcing them to use BCE/CE is a “convention.” It is a practice employed by a very small number of professors – most having strong antipathy towards Christianity.

Even if this unconventional BCE/CE timeline were now the convention it must have been initiated for some other reason. After all, one cannot say it was always the “convention.” It is likely that the original reason for this petty infringement on students’ religious freedom is one of the following:

1. Concerns over “separation of church and state.” It is clear to all but the least educated among us that the First Amendment Establishment Clause was meant to keep the federal government from establishing one particular Christian denomination as an official government church. The notion that BC must be replaced because the “C” stands for “Christ” is both historically and legally indefensible. But some professors actually have (or pretend to have) such an extreme interpretation of the Establishment Clause. This extremism even led several to say (in writing on the Faculty Senate mailing list) that the official university calendar had to use the term “spring holiday” in place of “Good Friday.” This was a stance they attributed to their “strong commitment” to separation of church and state.

That is why (in a future column) I will encourage students to sign up for the criminology professor’s class and defy her BC/AD ban. As of this writing, I have already obtained legal counsel for the students. That other part of the First Amendment mentioning free exercise of religion will be the subject of the federal litigation.

2. Questions about the historical claims of Christianity. It does not help matters that the professor responsible for the BC/AD ban also subscribes to wild conspiracy theories related to the origins of Christianity. She once told me that she thinks the Four Gospels were established as valid during a power struggle at the Council of Nicea. It is this kind of ignorance that leads to questions about whether Jesus was actually an historical figure. Those who tend to answer the question in the negative are naturally inclined to replace the BC/AD convention. Nonetheless, it is still the convention.

3. The Right to be Un-offended. Often, censors will ban words in an effort to preserve a so-called right to be un-offended. In the case of the BC/AD ban I have seen no evidence that anyone was ever offended by the now-banned letters. However, three students have now reported that they are offended by the ban itself. This is an example of how censorship generally backfires. And it is evidence that censors are often socially inept.

When one contemplates the ever-expanding list of words and ideas that are banned from college campus, the need for a caustic response is readily apparent. Strong language is often of good way of letting the censors know you won’t be intimidated. But more than strong language is needed in these times.

Just a few years ago I sent a warning to Georgia Tech letting them know they would soon be sued for a number of policies violating the First Amendment. They willingly abandoned an unconstitutional speech zone policy prior to summary judgment. But they chose to defend an unconstitutional speech code and unconstitutional manual telling gays which churches were “good” or “bad” on gay rights issues.

Because Georgia Tech did not take my warnings seriously they have lost more than just a pair of highly embarrassing First Amendment rulings. They are about to write a check for $300,000 to the attorneys I found to represent the students.

If some child porn advocate is reading this column he is free to consider it a “nasty” piece of journalism. If some UNC administrator is reading this column she is free to consider it a threat of litigation.

Democrats solve Global Warming!
Democratic genius Dennis Kuchinich and other intellectual Democrats have found the answer to Global Warming.

Future Secretary of Commerce Maxine Waters was explaining why NASA should land the 'Sun Lander' at NIGHT to avoid heat damage to the lander.

A common epiphany occured involving Maxine Waters, Dennis Kuchinich, Barney Frank, John Murtha and William Jefferson.

They said all of the sudden we realized what is causing 'Global Warming' at the same time!

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!

"Adding more hours of sunlight during the summer afternoons", a spokesman for the group said "is the obvious culprit".

The five congresspersons declared they would wear only 'Speedos' publicly until Al Gore acknowledges their momentous discovery.

A spokesman for Al Gore said "Mr Gore is in a bitter dispute involving his claim of inventing the wheel with Louis Farrakhan who claims space aliens created the 'Mother Wheel' and may not have time to comment on the discovery."

The 'Speedo' five will appear 'Speedo' clad til all congresspeople join in solidarity by wearing 'Speedos' - Harry Reid is expected to wear a 'Speedo' immediately.

The bill will be entitled "Stop Global Warming by Eliminating Extra Hours of Sunshine" sponsored by all intellectuals in the Democratic Party.

Call your congresspersons today!

Join the fight against Global Warming - wear your 'Speedo' everywhwere in solidarity with the 'Speedo Five'!

I'm with "cleverness"...
If we're going with "Common Era" (CE), then we should show the strength of conviction to mean it and immediately switch to the Chinese calendar.

"Common" being synonymous with "Average" - there are FAR more Chinese than anyone else.

Welcome to the year 4706.

- MuscleDaddy

Common Era? Based on What?
Dear liberal,

Since liberals do not, hopefully, intend to change the world's commonly accepted calendar, which currently shows that it is the year 2008, I'm wondering what your definition of "Common Era" is. If you're not changing the calendar, then BCE = BC and "Common Era" = AD. And if that's the case, then you've accomplished absolutely nothing but an overt denial of Christ. The beginning of your so-called "Common Era" is, still, whether you like it or not, based on the birth of Christ. So what we're left with, logically, is a simple denial of Christ, which is what you were after in the first place. Congratulations. And good luck with that.

Bob Barr
If you are concerned about the leftward swing of our Nation, you should vote fro Bob Barr in 2008.

John McCain is a republican in name only and he will not promote conservative values. Despite his claims to the contrary McCain will put more liberal judges on the Supreme Court.

Show the two party establishment that you are not a lsave to thier system.

Vote Free. Vote Libertarian. Vote Bob Barr

Common Era?
According to the Chinese calendar it is 4706. According to the Islamic calendar it is 1428. As with other PC terms, Common Era is LESS descriptive of reality than the traditional term.

"Advocate..."
I was wondering why Dr Adams used the words "Child Porn Advocate." It's an interesting question because I am sure that because I don't believe in the death penalty, and it is applied to murderers and rapists, that I am a murder advocate, or rape advocate. Is it possible that this "advocate" merely supported free speech, just as Dr Adams supports it himself?

Only a smokescreen
Much of that 'separation of church and state' stuff is only a smokescreen. It's a logical cover for what is no more than extreme anti-Christianity.

We see all the time: the people who are most vocal about 'separation of church and state,' but say nothing about things like teaching students about Islam, having the Koran on reading lists, and so forth.

TO Bob Munck
the first amendment prohibiting an establishment of religion was pointed directly at the English and the Church of England. this country had just completed the revolution and the founders (most of whom were Anglicans) did not want to reproduce the Church related problems that the English had. That is it: no more - no less. they did not want to ban reference to G-D in the public square or any of the other nonsense that has occured in the last 50 years. There is another clause in the 1st amendment: ". . .or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" which serves to keep this nation's freedom of religion intact. the founders had vision and insight that todays "smart people" lack. Mike Adams qualifies as an honorary USA Anglican !

Political Correctness.
"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical
liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media,
which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a
turd
by the clean end

we've lost our cojones
During the '48 elections, Henry Wallace was running for something or other and was making a speech in some mid-western town. The farmers in that town threw eggs at him and sang "we don't want him, you can have him, he's too red for me" It's too bad that we don't have the cojones those farmers had. If, when a judge or an elected official makes a stupid ruling, we, as citizens of the USA break into his house and ride him or her out of town on a rail, this stupidity would cease immediately.

Disasterbabe
"making "Merry Christmas a PC issue was the work of conservatives, who are more PC than anybody. "

You are a liar and a pseudointellectual. Your post is not founded in any fact. It is simply more liberal pap.

To the conservatives: It's okay to loathe liberals. It is a duty to preserve our freedoms and challenge their totalitarian ideas and drive them from the marketplace of ideas.

gee
I guess it was a lucky break that Mike was asked by a child porn advocate. I’ve never met or actually heard from one, but I’m sure some exist. Can you imagine how awkward it would have been if he had been asked the same question by a little old Christian lady or by that friend of his who is the head of his own made up religion, Doug something or other?

I suspect you'll get the usual blathers of those who will call you out for your "nasty" sounding column. The loony left is so busy trying to rewrite history they forget what day it is. Sadly, college students today feel helpless to challenge their self righteous teachers as their grades all hinge on telling the teachers what they want to hear. Thanks for standing up for them, and encouraging them to be radicals. Yes, it is "radical" when you depart loudly away from the "accepted" norm - not necessarily the truth. The academic "accepted" norm is "shut up and don't challenge my idiocy".

Sure, you don't care now, but just wait for the libs/lefties to gain a little more power: You won't be able to have any Christmas tree no matter what you call it, you won't be able to use BC under threat of death. "Christian" denomination? No, any denomination of any religion whatsoever. How can you possibly be a professor at a real university?

And how often do dates more than 2,000 years ago or the word "mankind" come up in a criminology course? I suspect approximately never.

So you want to restrict how that professor teaches her class? I'll bet that she has tenure, and you don't.

Munckie, you are a dreamer and not well informed besides: Adams COULD NOT POSSIBLE SAY what he does and get away with it if he did not have tenure. Rosemary would have gotten rid of him immediately after his first criticism of her and her female homosexual friends.

Whose Caricature?
"disasterbabe" writes"

"Conservatism has become a charicature {sic} of itself".

As a former Marxist myself, that statement struck me as rather humorous, because it is so typical of the almost complete lack of introspection in the dogmatic Leftist mind.
It is, manifestly, those on the political Left who are obsessed with obliterating any vestige of what THEY view as the "sexist" or "Euro-centric" aspects of the language of the current "ancien regime" of American market capitalism and Christian heritage. The fact that the Leftist "PC Police" on university campuses are constantly trying to impose increasingly claustrophobic speech codes on everyone . . . and doing so in the NAME of "diversity" and "tolerance" . . . is abundant evidence that it is those on the Left who are making caricatures of themselves.
In my Trotskyist days, I attended endless "party" meetings in which numerous pretentious "intellectuals" argued about the same trivial nonsense, over and over, ad nauseam . . . like whether to call themselves "Progressives", for the sake of public consumption, because the general public did not like the word, "Socialist" . . . or whether to use "Ms." instead of "Miss" . . . or purging the language of anything smacking of that dreaded word, RELIGION, by changing BC or AD to something else. It was like a parody of Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm" in the real world. If anyone has watched Monty Python's, "The Life of Brian", you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

"Mankind"
The professor who has banned the use of "mankind" as "sexist" is not only opposed to free speech but is also an ignoramus. If she bothered to look in a dictionary at the etymology of "man" instead of attacking free speech, she would discover that is comes from a very old Indo-European root meaning "thinking being." It is cognate with "mind," "mental." "mathematics." Of course, anyone but the Marxist feminists would know that "man" is a word that is added on many words, as in "chairman," which have no sexual meaning, including the word "woman" itself! The Marxist feminists who attack language are merely trying to start a fight, a Communist tactic to get a civil war going so that they can take over. The war between the sexes is not, however, one which will lead to civil war, given the nature of the relations between the sexes, and the Marxist feminists will injure men and women, families and children instead.

Rich D.
I should have said that the Germanic God Mani was named for the moon.

Rich D. and TrueRedhead
All religion and history of religion will never be eliminated - humans are hardwired everywhere on the planet to believe in some sort of powerful, creation-deity, and to sustain beliefs that transcend their assessments of practical reality.

True Redhead
"The same goes for "Spring Holiday" and "Season's Greetings" - the timing of those celebrations is based on Christian belief and tradition"

I'm not disagreeing with you, except that the Christian tradition is based on a popular pagan tradition and holiday, linked to the winter solstice. Constantine chose the same day to celebrate as the birth day of Christ, to more or less "co-opt" the pagan holiday and turn it into a Christian one.

TrueRedHead
"Until ALL religion and all history of religion is eliminated everywhere,..."

That will happen - just make sure that you are prepared for the big day.

C'mon - Monday
is moon day, named prophetically in advance to honor the left coast of the US.

A rose by any other name...
As Elise points out above, whether we use BC/AD or BCE/CE, the calendar reference means the same thing, so it's an empty argument.

The same goes for "Spring Holiday" and "Season's Greetings" - the timing of those celebrations is based on Christian belief and tradition.

Until ALL religion and all history of religion is eliminated everywhere, until the world adopts a new calendar and until retailers no longer bow to the god of holiday profits, it doesn't matter what the PC crowd does, there will be those who insist on being "offended."

I guess all we can hope for is that common sense will return to fashion at some point during our lifetimes.

paging wwsword

Are you sword? or, ww's word? I ask because I'm so balmy scientific. it wouldn't do to arbitrarily make you lesser than you might not be, Guv'nor.

YOU say, "this term 'mankind' is unscientific because it leaves out other members of the species. Humankind is more accurate, therefore the appropriate term to use in scientific papers and discussion."

Now, Guv'nor. If Mankind were suitable for 'erman Melville and other notable writers; why ain't it OK for the papers & discussion soon to be hincinerated? I always associate "mankind" with the 'uman species.

"The use of "before common epoch" is preferred because it is religiously neutral and therefore more scientific."

Why is it preferred to B.C.--? We count the actual years transpired, don't we? Since the life of Jesus,--? Isn't it pointless?

If we surely want scientific, let's change this year --To the Year We Stopped Counting Years. "YWSCY." Nothing could be more useful to scientific bean-counters. I mean, Guv'nor; You know, "This isn't SPAIN!"

Re: Post # 111
Dear Ken:

I believe that Mike Adams does not have tenure. He has written several columns about this situation.

Also, regarding AD/BC or BCE/CE. I could only wish that this was the biggest problem in my life.

Actually,
making "Merry Christmas a PC issue was the work of conservatives, who are more PC than anybody.

Younger et al
"Now, with the insistence on the part of some that Christmas is not to be even thought of, much less named"

I owned a greeting card business for 18 years. My income depended on knowing what people want to say.

"Merry Christmas" has never, never, never, been out of style, and buyers who request also something a little more generic are responding to customers who do business or have friends and family in another culture, or who need company cards for a wide recipient list that includes all views of religion. Our culture, Younger, is also a bit more varied and complex than it was in the '50s.

People also often buy cards that will cover Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years so they can start mailing early and can extend their deadline.

It has nothing, nothing, nothing to do with being anti-Christ and holding black masses.

This is the kind of trumped up, phoney victimization that conservatives love and write 4th rate books about. (Sorry for the dangling preposition.)

PC Healthcare
Gynecologists must give the same number of pelvic exams to men as women.

Women must have the same number of prostate exams as men.

Men must have the same number of breast exams as women.

Just wondering...
What do the various factions within the Democratic party call themselves?

I mean, calling anybody anything can be construed as "offensive labeling". How do these guys hold meetings and discussions if you can't put some kind of classification on things.

Do they have to go through some kind of elaborate circumelocution like calling a pig a "curly tailed animal"?

I mean, like, you know, I'm just saying...

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

Younger
"I am 72, and I am not holding. "

That's OK, I am.

Unisex Bathrooms and correctness
Should hey be called 'bathrooms' since no one takes baths there?

Should they only have toilets instead of urinals?

Should all toilets have no seats to stop arguments about leaving the seats up?

Should there only be urinals?

Should sanitary napkins be available since 1/2 the users do not need or require them?

These are the kinds of problems Liberals could spend years deciding instead of breaking things that aren't broken like health care.

Happy Holidays
AS I recall, back in the fifties, Bing Crosby sang about "Happy Holidays." At the time, no body thought much of it, because Christmas was known to be the holiday in December, and New Year's Day was a week later.

Now, with the insistence on the part of some that Christmas is not to be even thought of, much less named, the people who want to remember the December holiday because it commemorates the birth of Christ are rising up against the attempt to abolish the knowledge of "the reason for the season."

In an effort to prevent anyone being offended by anything at anytime, it has been decided that, henceforth, no verbal utterances of any kind will be allowed.

Obama tough on Pork
Obama will demand that all pork products be banned from Supermarkets because it offends his Islamic Brethren.

Obama will demand that NO pork products be allowed in any government facility or school because of separation of 'Church and State'.

Obama will demand that no Restaurant will be allowed to cook pork products within one mile of any Islamic residence - because the smell is offensive to his brethren.

Obama will demand that all farmers who raise pigs must erect solid fences around their farms so his Islamic brethern will not have to see pigs which offends them.

Obama will demand that no pork products can be served during National Holidays like the 4th of July.

Obama in his 46 page 'Change for America' says he will expand hate crime speech - could mentioning pork be a criminal offense? or eating pork be a hate act? or walking a pet 'pygmy pig' where his Islamic brethern could see it be a hate act?

Obama will insist that the Arkansas Razorbacks change their names because it offends his Islamic brethern.

Hate crimes and Hate speech will certainly be a 'Change' for America - now Democrats chant altogether 'Yes We Can'.

Uncle B, and others
AD does not stand for "after death": if it did, the calendar would be missing the 33 years of Christ's life. It's Latin: Anno Domini, in the year of our Lord.

If you want to have a few minutes' fun, insist to the language Nazis that the "C" in BCE and CE stands for "Christian".

As a historian, I've been "corrected" a time or two on my use of BC and AD. I politely looked the speaker in the eyes and corrected him right back. The conversations stopped until my usage was accepted. It always is, so don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.

There are no facts, only opinion.

Although you don't say so explicitly, you also seem to be the type that might hold some "wrong" opinions.

The opinions you may hold but have not yet expressed are explicitly prohibited, and you are hereby cautioned that you are treading dangerously close to violation.

Any criticism of the "right" policies will not be tolerated.

Next thing we know, you might actually ask questions about the policy positions of Barack Obama, which behavior, of course has been deemed racist on its face.

In summary, be careful.

What's next for the PC crowd?
Will they deny a woman is a woman and a man is a man and say it is wrong to call us women and men? Probably.

Will they deny it is summer and call it winter? deny it is June and call it December?

Seems like they can get by with anything and everything--denial, lies, deceit are all "protected rights" for these "tenured" should be teachers. There is no stopping their deceptions and lies and teaching ignorance unless our young people will agree to stand up for what is truth and right.

Will they do that or are they too weak morally, spiritually, mentally to do so?

Thanks for the kind words. I was raised by Depression era parents with mid-western common sense. I grew up in sunny So Cal but was blessed enough to get out and raise my family in the beautiful bluegrass state. Unfortunately things are gettin worse here in Lexington, or what I call Little San Francisco.

It's a shame about those stereotypes isn't it? I have a lot of good conservative family members in California, but it's still recognized as being Choc-Full-O-Nuts.

It's pretty funny, actually. I'm working for 29 weeks in Chicago to transform a $33 million dollar company into one which actually makes money, and the yankees I'm working with can't stop talking about my accent and asking me silly questions about people in the South, as if the entire region is nothing more than the set for "The Dukes of Hazard".

Is this what you are referring to?

Forgive me for not noting that ...
the following incarnations, i.e. MRDMRD, MREMRE, MRFMRF and so on, will hardly be any better either. When you spot a post from one, don't even slow down. Shake the dust off your sandals (or mouse) and scroll to the next post.

I'm getting the distinct feeling ...
that the MRCMRC incarnation is just as incoherent as the mrbmrb one that was apparently kickec off TH a week or two back. New rev of the same ol' kind. Hardly worth a look.

george washington, about that one vote..
Can we be sure that it will always be the case? I mean, split personalities and all, I'm sure some progressive will eventually submit that it's not fair for people with multiple personalities to only get to vote once! We must always strive to be fair, musn't we?

conswervative to liberal one bite at a t
to go from conservative to liberal to socialist is really very simple. chip away chip away chip away chip away and then when the remnant gets small enough gobble it up. works just fine for me. join the crowd, 15 years from now you will be doing your best to forget what you wrote here as die hard conservatives, and you will probably succeed. just like none of you cant seem to remember shere you stood on the loosening of the rstriction on gays serving in the military. human mind is a fantastic gadget.

And by the way, Commodore, ...
after you've run the gamut and beat your head against the wall for even attempting to have a coherent dialog with ol' whatsherface, I promise not to say "I told you so." Experience is the best teacher, so, have at it/her.

Hey Commodore, you obviously ...
haven't been around long enough to know who you're dealing with WRT disasterbabe. In all honesty, you'd have an easier time having a good dialog with a chicken. She is not here for that. Apparently, she's not capable either.

[I]n the face of world famine, rising energy costs, recession, sinking economy, etc. etc. etc., yada yada yada *AD NAUSEUM* why do you waste your time (and ours) posting on this and other TH threads?

Why don't you go play on DAILY KOS, Huffington Post, or some other liberal site, or is it simply that preaching to the choir is just no fun?

Adams' Political Correctness
The term "mankind" is unscientific because it leaves out other members of the species. Humankind is more accurate, therefore the appropriate term to use in scientific papers and discussion. The use of "before common epoch" is preferred because it is religiously neutral and therefore more scientific. BC and AD are Christian religious ideas.

Making students use proper terminology in a science class is simply a part of proper instruction. It is no different than teaching proper placement of periods and commas. I take off points for missing page numbers because it is important for students to number their pages. I would be an inadequate teacher if I allowed students to use inappropriate terminology in their scientific papers and discussions.

Adams is pushing a political point on his students, in particular a patriarchal and specific religious ideology. Worse, he is putting students up to, for the sake of his political correctness, deviating from the norms and standards of scientific discourse. This is worse that inadequate teaching. This is interfering with the students' education.

Mal and FROG, act better than them
Come on, you two, try to show you're better than the daily KOS crowd. Mal, everyone doubleposts sometimes. FROG, your last post is not fit for civil discourse.

Come on guys, you don't have to insult them to beat them. That causes you to lose the debate. When someone actually believes that evil can be extinguished in the world by taxing the rich, then you don't need to lower yourselves to petty insults to beat them on the internet.

Mal
If it wasn't a mistake (when cons do it nobody notices) then it was posted twice because it was so important.

Bestow upon us poor unenlightened knuckle-draggers the prose of one who has been to the mountaintop and seen the future. So, what happened disasterbabe? Your earlier post didn't get a mention so you had to post it under your second pseudonym? Okay, babe (I'll bet you're actually a short, squatty, rotund, rotund butterball with unshaved legs and armpits - no that's not a typo, I specifically meant to say rotund twice), let's hear your SNL sketch. I'll bet you've never said or did anything fun or funny in your whole life. Well, at least not intentionally.

@ Disasterbabe
Do you find yourself so trivial that you have to post the same thing twice?

"And btw, I'm a 22 year old fresh out of college"

And you think no one could tell, right?

To disasterbabe on reading comprehension
Hey babe, I don't think I heard any of the conservatives here talking about "Happy Holidays". Only the libs were doing that.

So, let me ask you, in the face of world famine, rising energy costs, recession, sinking economy, war, genocide, nuclear tensions, and anti-religious bigots, why are the libs talking about "happy holidays" when no one else is?

And btw, I'm a 22 year old fresh out of college. Thankfully, I was not majoring in any of the "liberal" arts.

YLG
I'll bet there are more people who are familiar with "Before Christ" than are familiar with the "Common Era".

Just what the he-- is the "Common Era" anyway? Like that is suppose to clarify things?!!

Religious connotations
It is true that relgious connotations bother some people. But, which is better, to have a common calendar that all can readily comprehend and is accurate with respeact to sidereal time, or continually change your calendar?

For instance, as I look back at some of the records of my ancestors, I find "b. 3 Henry IV (1403) d. 10 Henry VI (1432);" "d. 5 Edward IV (1466)"

Without the year numbers, it would be hard to determine the dates of these ancestors. We could use the Julian calendar as Julius Caesar instituted it, but we would be off several days in sidereal time. The Gregorian calendar is far more accurate than the Julian calendar, and most of the people who use it have no thought of religious connotations. You find in it no religious dogma or tenets.

The true meaning
of BCE is Before Christian Era
of CE is Christian Era

I believe they mean what I want them to mean.

Younger
You're a pretty interesting guy (gal)?

Are you under 65?

Where else
in the face of world famine, rising energy costs, recession, sinking economy, war, genocide, and nuclear tensions could a bunch of people get together and moan about whether or not they can say "Happy Holidays"?

And you think conservatism is still viable?

"That's nice Will"
My advice- the reply to Will should always be,"THat's nice,Will." Don't spend the precious few moments you have acknowledging foolishness.

Gregorian calendar
Yes, not many people know why the calendar we use is called the "Gregorian" calendar. It comes from the recalculation of the calendar in the time of Gregory XIII. Until this recalculation, the Julian calendar, which makes every fourth year a leap year, was used. Julius Caesar authorized his calendar in 46 BC, and a monk named Dionysius Exiguus calculated a new starting point for the calendar in the sixth century. It has since been determined that he miscalculated the starting point by four to six years--but we still use his starting point.
AD 730, the Venerable Bede announced that the Julian year was 11 minutes and 14 seconds too long, but nothing was done about this until the 16th century, when a new calendar was calculated and declared to be in force in all the lands that looked to Rome for spiritual authority. This calendar makes every fourth year, except for the year that ends a century, a leap year. Thus, 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years. As result, several days were immediately removed from the calendar in those lands. The lands in which the Refomation took place did not make the change until later; they made the change in the 18th century. The Russians still used the Julian calendar until the October Revolution (which took place in November, according to the Gregorian calendar), and when King George V of England wrote his first cousin, Czar Nicholas II, it might have been possible for the Czar to get the letter before it was written.

A note on Reply #'s
Initially, I thought it was a cool idea to add the reply numbers to posts. Then the TH sensers went and screwed it all up. You see, when a post gets deleted, all the Reply #'s change and the posts that came after the deleted one.

What happens then is when a post like Gretchens at 12:32pm that refers to The Commodores post #88, you wind up with an incorrect reference. With the deleted posts, The Commodores #88 post is now #86!

TH, please either fix it so that deleted posts don't change Reply #'s or just get rid of the whole thing altogether. OR, BETTER YET, QUIT DELETING POSTS AND LET ADULTS DETERMINE FOR THEMSLEVES WHAT THEY WISH TO READ OR NOT READ!!!

BCE/CE & BC/AD
The use of BCE and CE in place of BC and AD is not new. I first noticed it some forty to fifty years ago in the publications of the Watchtower Tract and Bible Society (better known, perhaps, as "Jehovah's Witnesses"). I was not sure why they did this, but now I think that it may be that they do not want to acknowledge Christ as Lord. I am convinced that none of the people who nowadays insist on using BCE and CE do not want to acknowledge him as Lord, even though they still have to use the date that was calculated as that of the birth of Jesus if their dating is to be comprendible to other people.

Incidentally, when using "AD," the year is properly put after the abbreviation (read AD 2008 "in the year of our Lord 2008").

Five words...
...for the PC fanatics.

TheCommodore, Re: #88

I'm glad you always did get the "religious connotations"; given the deplorable state of education today, one doesn't quite know WHAT to think. History is, for the most part, so poorly taught in our public schools that it is entirely possible for someone to have no idea of the origins of the Gregorian calendar, or, for that matter, who Gregory was!

By the way, your point on sarcasm not always being readily apparent on these posts is well taken!

I knew that some of the founders were fluent in Latin, so they must have translated anno domini for the commoners of the time. It is sad that they did not write the entire constitution in Latin. That would have ended the "living document" and open to interpretation debates.

Outlaw the Constitution!
Since none of the founding FATHERS were female, the Constitution should never have been ratified since half of the citizens were disenfranchised from ratifying it.
I wonder if the navy has to change their announcements during general quarters on ships and must now "person" their stations rather than man them?

Think 4 Yourself, I love it!
CE = Christian Era
BCE = Before the Christian Era

Works for me!!

where words says you
In the very permissive world of political correctness, we are told how the language and the constitution are living. The Ebonics age , including Hip Hop and the new Aca-Demonic Age with spiffy new buzz words is here. Soon the police will have to get with it and say :
" You have the right to remain stupid, and everything you say won't be held against you because no one will be able to truly understand it anyway."

RE: the flash
"In fact, I do believe that the signers dated some of their documents "A.D". did they not?"

Probably not, however they DID sign most with "in the year of our Lord...". Amusingly, that is ven how the US Constitution was signed. You know, that document that supposedly ban any religions references in public places?

Liberals agree with the Ku Klux Klan
Any time some kooky commie rants on about the need for the "separation of church and state", I remind them that they are, yet again, in complete agreement with the Ku Klux Klan.

The man who penned the constitutionally indefensible "separation of church and state" Supreme Court decision was none other than Hugo Black, life-member of the Klan.

PC
I don't care if atheists call it a non-denominational holiday shrub as long as I can call it a Christmas tree. I don't care if they choose to say BCE as long as I can say BC. I don't care if pagans celebrate the winter solistice and Jews celebrate Passover and Hindus celebrate Diwali and Muslims celebrate Eid al Fatr, as long as I can celebrate Easter and Christmas.

The PC activists are some of the most intolerant people in the world, and the funny thing is, most of the pagans, Hindus and so on that I know really don't care what Christians do. They think the PC stuff is ridiculous too!

There now....is everyone properly offended. If not well that is very aggravating. I hope y'all are politically aggravated. I know I am.

The 1st Amendment does not apply
Because AD/BC was established and in common use long before the constitution was ratified, its use by the government or any government agency does not constitute the establishment of a religion. If the US created a NEW calander and then tried using AD/BC, that would have been problematic.
In fact, I do believe that the signers dated some of their documents "A.D". did they not?

Gretchen 83
You write "NOW do you get the "religious connotations"?"

Gretchen, I always did. Sarcasm and talking down to people doesn't always carry itself through text.

Gestell 66
You write "Just recognize that not everyone on the planet believes that history should be reckoned from the birth of Christ."

However, even if you use BCE/CE, you are still reckoning history from the birth of Christ, just using the wrong title for it. Tell me, what calendar do you use?

Will
Just exactly what did you mean by "Michael's Feathers"?
I'm not sure but it seems you are being very insensitive to some kind of bird. Fruitcrows is a featherless bird. Maybe we should evolve the language to eleminate such discriptive words like "Feathers" so as not to hurt the Fruitcrows feelings.

Gestell
I have heard the argument that the terms BCE and CE are becoming more the standard than BC and AD. The question is why? As already noted earlier on this thread, the change in usage is merely semantics at its PC worst. There has been no change in calendars or change of date in which the split occurs. BCE still refers to the exact same period of time as BC and CE refers to the exact same period of time as AD.

The ONLY conclusion one can come to is some thin skinned anti-Christian idiot was offended and set out to make a change. And only in the halls of academia would such nonsense make sense to some half-witted liberal professors. Seriously, think about it. I mean, you can't be that dense can you?

The First Amendment
Dr. Adams:

While I agree with you that students should be permitted to use "BC" and "AD" (As a Heathen, I use "BCE" and "CE" myself.) in marking dates, if they wish, I differ with you on your interpretation of the First Amendment phrase on separation of Church and State. I do not find the mention of Christianity, as you note ("First Amendment Establishment Clause was meant to keep the federal government from establishing one particular Christian denomination as an official government church.") in the First Amendment. There were a number of people living in the Colonies and United States at that time who were not Christians, namely, Jews as pointed out in the recent PBS series, "The Jewish Americans." I am sure there were also other non-Christian people, such as Unitarians and Deists who did not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, or, more correctly, Rabbi Joshua bar Joseph.

The Commodore, Re: Your #54

I shall assume you were serious when you asked "What possible use would a Gregorian calendar have for using religious connotations?" In the sixteenth century the Gregorian Calendar was decreed by POPE Gregory XIII. NOW do you get the "religious connotations"?

Speaking of calendars, I am curently reading a fascinating book on the subject: "Calendar: Humanity's Epic Struggle to Determine a True and Accurate Year" by David Ewing Duncan -- I highly recommend it.

Gestell - the Left hates free speech
Gestell: “I've finally figured out Mike; he's a full-time, professional-grade whiner.”

Yeah, Mike. Didn’t you know that when the Left decides – unilaterally – to redefine words, history, science (you name it), that you are just supposed to quietly accept it like all the other good sheep? How dare you make an issue of this and bring it to the attention of the general public before the Left has a chance to subtly turn their propaganda into accepted form? Geez, no wonder the Left hates you.

P.S. TO EVERYONE ELSE:

Regarding my double post above: I swear I only hit ‘submit’ once!

I took a little course at our local CC
and the instructor was one of these fanatics. I gotta admit to the biggest belly laugh of all when we got to the "BCE/CE vs AD/BC".
IF the 'current era' is NOT the Christian Era, then WHAT IS IT? Is it the information Era? Or perhaps the Industrial Era?
I put seemingly nonsensical numbers for all years. WITH the disclaimer on the bottom that MY CURRENT ERA dates from MY BIRTH. (Being careful to be 'arithmetically correct' - So, the end of the Civil War occured in 100 BM. 100 years Before Me.)
Great fun! Feel free to use AND abuse.
Another idea is about this "person" vs "man". We use the CONVENTION of "ish" when speaking of people who are BritISH, or "n" as in ArmeniaN or AmericaN. So why can't we use these same conventions when talking about people in Congress as CongrIOTS? (as in CyprIOTS?) Or people who deliver mail as MailESE? As in NepalESE or MilanESE?

Will you are wrong
Mike isn't riled up about because he has an ax to grind. He's riled up because the teacher threatens to deduct points off papers for students who do not use her terminology. That is the point of the whole article. The use of force to change terminology she doesn't like (or finds offensive). This is the teacher's problem not the students. She appears to be overly sensitive and in a place of power she will use her authority in order not to be offended.

Environmentalism
We need you (Adams) to get worked up about environmentalism. Al Gore should be sued (Screaming Fire in a Theater)for the fraud he has perpetrated, i.e. An inconvenient truth.
I wish there were more like you going after the Universities.

Adams is fighting an important fight
The Left learned a long time ago that the best place to advance their agenda is to imbed themselves in our educational institutions. Many young people, of course, lack the maturity and experience to recognize and to question the left-wing slant and propaganda that taint their instruction. This is exactly what the Left counts on. What they also count on is that the students who do recognize what’s going on can usually be cowed into silence because of the discomfort of confronting the professor with his young allies all around him. If you learn anything at all on a college campus today it’s that the Left’s greatest enemy is free speech. Try to question their biased teachings and instead of free-spirited debated you will be ridiculed, shouted down or even threatened. As the Left understands all too well, this is what must happen in order to forward an agenda that goes against the principles on which this country is founded.

Unfortunately too many young people believe that to sign on with the anti-establishment code of the Left is proof of their own independence, yet nothing could be further from the truth. As most of us learn when we get older and wiser, to be routinely anti-establishment is about as thoughtful as following every new fad that comes around.

That’s my lengthy way of saying: keep up the good fight, Dr. Adams!

aspacia
He also pointed out "FE-MALE" and "MAN-MADE"

Double Posting
Is there some reason(maybe with Townhall's server?) why everybody seems to be double posting here? Just wondered. On to my point. I think zeek7 put it best. Language does evolve but through common usage not because academic authoritarians demand it. Some of their preferences may come to pass after all but only after widespread acceptance. And substituting "person" every time "man" is part of a word does seem ludicrous. My tongue trips over itself every time I try to say something like chairperson. It just doesn't come naturally. Perhaps with time it might. But good grief people is this the most important thing we can debate right now? Gas is $4.00 a gallon, inflation and unemployment are rising and no end in sight. If this debate over vocabulary is the best we can do we are getting petty. And yes to the poster who quoted Thomas Jefferson I agree. It seems that we have run out of virtue and common sense to be able to correct abuses.

I prefer the shorter AD/BC but..
I prefer AD/BC, but if people insist, I guess we could use the BCE/ACE (Before Christ Entered, and After Chrtist Entered) nomenclature if others insist.

"BP"
There was a short period around the same time that BC/AD were starting to be wrung out of use that the more absurd "BP" designation was used. BP meant "Before Present" and was absurd because you had a moving reference point.

Elise
BRAVO!!

But I'll bet yours is a lonely experience in the halls of academia - wherever you are.

Yet we wonder why the country is rapidly spiraling down the toilet...go figure.

s

Do you not see the hypocrasy of your reasoning? Do you not see that you are the intolerant one? Why does political correctness only apply to liberal secularists? You accuse conservatives/Christians of being hypersensitive to changes to coventional terms and Christian feast days, when the real truth is that liberal secularists are the hypersensitive ones who are so intolerant that history and tradition must be changed because their sensibilities are affected. Books must be re-written, language must be altered or eradicated, Christian holy days are being hijacked - the next thing you know, offensive places such as the Sistene Chapel and the Pieta must be destroyed - like the Taliban's destruction of the Buddhas of Banyam. Yeah - I'm intolerant - of idiotic thinking.

My 12 year old just pointed out "wo-man".
So what do we call ourselves now "Ladies" that will never do.

Got anything else to whine about?
I've finally figured out Mike; he's a full-time, professional-grade whiner. FYI, BCE is used in virtually all academic fields now, and it has a lengthy history. Look up the Wikipedia article for some of this. A student studying archaeology or ancient history needs to learn the jargon of the field, and BCE is part of that jargon. [All fields have jargon, folks]

The other reason BCE is used is that many people who are not Christians employ the chronology BC/AD, which is the dating system used in most business around the world.

Please note: I am not saying that Christians have to give up BC/AD in their minds, hearts, worship services, or emails. Just recognize that not everyone on the planet believes that history should be reckoned from the birth of Christ.

Back to Mike: what he really doesn't like is that anyone dares to disagree with conservative arguments and doctrines. When that happens, Mike usually threatens either to sue or to call his anonymous law enforcement friends. (Do they use black helicopters?)

@UncleB
As pointed out earlier, AD doesn't stand for 'After Death', it stands for the latin phrase Anno Domini - In the Year of our Lord. If your interpretation were accurate, we'd have a nice large year gap between the two events.

@aspacia
I'm a bit confused. Exactly why is the "BCE/CE" divide more 'inclusive toward...women' than the "BC/AD" divide? You do realize that 'mankind' is simply a slightly shorter-to-write/quicker-to-say version of 'humankind', do you not?

@UncleB:
CE stands for 'Common Era' in general usage. The B in BCE stands for 'Before'. Although, as pointed out above, the divide is still the same historical point.

These professors will stay on their course and keep getting further and further away from reality till they crash upon the rocks and become the homeless crazy people that infest college campuses.
Thirty years ago I dealt with these people ineffectively. Coming from a Catholic background I was taught to listen to and obey my elders. That they knew more than me. Unfortunately, these were the 60's radicals they hated God, family, tradition and country and took advantage of my trust. They wasted my hard earned dollars that I had saved for college working at minimum wage. But with an excellent upbringing comes a healthy dose of skepticism. I tried twice to confront and realized it was bigger than me and knew it was better to play the game get the grade and get out. Luckily, I was a Business major and didn't have to take many electives involving radical instructors.
THese people should be prosecuted for stepping on the Constitutional rights of students I hope this sends a wave of fear to all these people that use their power for indoctrination rather than education. After all students are paying for an education and Not their professors radical off topic ideologies.

Response to the Offended
I have taken a new approach to those that say they are offended. There is no place in the constitution that says you have the right to NOT be offended. So please feel free to express your right and be offended.

However, after I apologize that I offended you, I want you to know that I AM offended that you are offended. In fact, I am MORE offended that you are offended, than you are offended, so you MUST immediately stop being offended because you have offended me!

Hail Caesar
I am an atheist who all too often cannot believe the total dearth of logic to which secularists succumb, especially those who teach at our public institutions. Words may have cultural and religious origins, but inevitably lose their historical context and simply become words. Claiming that BC is a term that connects church and state is a bit like claiming that writing this column in a Latin-based language expresses an allegiance to the Roman Empire.

Aspacia 48
You're absolutely right. Indeed BC means "Before Christ" and AD stands for "Anno Domini." I wonder why these terms are used for the Gregorian Calendar. What possible reason would a Gregorian Calendar have for using religious connotations?

The point has been made in above posts. BCE/CE means nothing at all. The Gregorian Calendar, which we follow, uses BC/AD. The Mayan calendar started at zero and ends in a couple years. The Chinese calendar has a different New Year. Maybe, one day, you can replace the Gregorian calendar, but if you don't mind, I find it not only to be accurate, but enjoyable to use.

UncleB
BCE stands for "Before Common Era".

It also stands for "Bell Canada Enterprises", so take it for what it's worth.

For DavidMac (#53)
Being born in India, I took minor offence at your suggestion that "anti-Christian dumbies leave the USA and move to India, or Red China, or some place that has a different religion".

India, a democractic republic (in fact the world's largest, based on population) has religious freedom enshrined in its constitution--despite of the efforts of some (Hindu militants' political front) state governments to dispute this by imposing anti-conversion laws.

So, I'm suggesting that all readers substitute "Pakistan" (India's neighbour, the first "Islamic Republic"--in practice generally a Naziesque dictatorship run by a mullah-military nexus, and where religious freedom is NOT enshrined) for "India" when reading Dave's message (which can otherwise be taken as-is).

A Light in Dark Places
Keep on shining that light into the dark places, Dr. Adams.

It seems to me that you're working well within the tradition of the prophet Jeremiah.

Religion
Although I do not believe in any religion, I would suggest to the anti-Christian dumbies to leave the USA and move to India, or Red China, or some place that has a different religion.

The USA was founded on free-enterprise and personal freedom, including RELIGIOUS freedom.

If the "hate Christianity first" crowd can't abide that, they should leave now.

What the HE!!
Since I am OBVIOUSLY NOT politically correct.....what the he!! does BCE and/or CE stand.....wait that crap don't mean nothing. Please define CE BCE

BCE and CE
Are indeed far more accurate, as many members of humanity are not Christian. These terms are far more inclusive toward Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and women. By the way, women comprise more than half of humanity.

BC = Before Christ
AD = Anno domini, L In the year of our lord.
Mankind = excludes women, humanity is inclusive.

I will take that bet, buttmunch. If Mike Adams did not have tenure I am sure the liberal hacks in charge at UNCW would have long ago gotten him off the payroll. The "other" faculty does not need tenure ... she toes the PC and Liberal line.

A fool and his money are soon parted. You can send the check to my favorite Charity ... the NRA.

BRAVO!!
This is the best, most encouraging thing I have read in a long time. It is the strangle hold on education from kindergarten on up that has lost, or nearly lost, the cultural wars for conservatives. I am SO HAPPY to hear that someone is finally fighting back.

For too long conservatives have not had ANY BRAVE PEOPLE willing to come out swinging on the side of Constitutional freedoms. This article makes me wish I were back in college just so I could make a stink.

I wondered why so many colleges who were receiving federal funds could get away with supressing free speech. I guess there simply was no one who cared enough to challege the system. Until now. I don't know how you are paying for this Mike, but let us know because I was to send money!!

Excellent Article
Mike, the more I read your stuff, the bigger the fan I become!

I wish I could be 20 years old again, just to run through these colleges and wreak a little havoc!

That would be fun!

Amen!

Amen brother, couldn't have said it better myself.

Will, try this on for size....
A religious zealot of a teacher refuses to allow students to use the terms gay or homosexual for men of that persuasion. Instead, they MUST use the term F-ag or F-aggot.

Lesbians are not merely lesbians or homosexuals, rather, they are d-ikes.

Do approve? Yeah, I didn't think so.

"Crying wolf, Will?"
I find it amusing that Will accuses Dr. Adams of crying wolf, when it is apparent that he is more than willing to do far more than just write about the issues he discusses.

Or did Will miss the part about the $300,000 check Georgia Tech has to write?

Adams births a good one finally.
Excellent expose. Keep these up. Academic freakland. I had that same thing when I was in school. Get rid of financial aid to social science and liberal arts students.

think_4_yourself
As an old fogie whose biggest problem was avoiding an M1 thumb when he was your age, i am not ashamed of the world i left my children and grandchildren. I don't look back at the day before Pearl harbor as the good old days. I worry once in a while about what you kids are going to do with the finest country in the world, but its your problem now. Like Mr. Franklin said "...if you can keep it, Madam".

On the surface of it, ...
as a Christian, I don't have a problem with the use of the terms BCE and CE. I had the tremendous opportunity to travel through Israel last summer and at all historical sites, it was common to use BCE and CE. It's easily understood why Israeli officials would use those terms.

My problem with the use of those terms here is precisely they reason they are used in the first place. Some thin skinned bigot developed as anti-Christian bias and decided they were offended by BC and AD. Because of THEIR bias, all must kowtow to them and their delicate little psyches.

Well, I'm a little sick and tired of having to bow to the wishes of the God haters. They can continue to be offended all they want. And I will do my best to see that they are.

You leave little doubt of where you stand, Sir. Clarity is not the kindest of virtues, but it is an important one.

PC
GOD Bless you For taking this stand.

Will...
...I have deducted points from your last post for the use of the offensive words "Mankind" and "Person".It demonstrates the pervasive sexism in our society.Hearafter the word "Mankind" will be replaced with "Personkind".Oops! I mean "Perdaughterkind".Oops! I mean "Humankind".Oops!I mean "Human/Woman Kind".Oops! I mean "Hu/per/hu/kind".You are in danger of flunking my course,Will!

If anyone understands this post, please explain it to me.

The PC BS....
"My confidence is that there will for a long time be virtue and good sense enough in our countrymen to correct abuses." -- Thomas Jefferson (letter to Edward Rutledge, 1788)

One wonders what TJ considered a "long time." It seems that we may have reached the limit of that time. Useful idiots like Will, Robert and several others who are so full of it that they slosh when they walk are just cancers feeding on the rights we have. Not the rights given us by the Constitution, for there are none. God gave us our rights (per the preamble). The Constitution and the Bill of Rights prevent the government from encroaching on those rights.

Mike, I think you should name the professor in question. Speaking the truth is the best defense against slander, isn't it? If she really believes in her position, she should be eager to defend it, and more than a few of the posters here seem ready, as I am, to challenge her.

Keep up the good work, Mike, shining the light of truth in the dark corners where the cockroaches roam.

Will
Take your "more perfect equality" and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Equality is a myth. Guys like Ted Kennedy get off scot-free after getting drunk, killing a woman and taking off for 12 hours without reporting the accident. Then, to boot, the fat, womanizing scumbag, as a reward for his drunken debauchery, gets himself elected to the Senate for the next forty years by people like you who whine about "equality."

Save us your PC nonsense.

Will
As usual will, you fail to grasp the concept. These students were not given the choice to use BC/AD and BCE/CE interchangably. Some halfwit professor (and it doesn't take much to be a professor nowadays) has simply proclaimed his way or the highway.

I've got to tell you. I went to school in the 60's. If I was going today, I'd have a free education from the proceeds of the lawsuits I'd be bringing against these morons.

norman
if your answer would have eben sufficient i wouldnt have asked, i have a reason for asking. if you try again assume i have some understanding of what eaxh of the words mean, but put it in small words so you can write it and i can read it. i had a rough night last night studying adult porn advocates. so go easy if you decide to go at all.

Screw Them
I was a Trotskyist during my own mis-spent youth. I cannot count the number of times I have personally witnessed Marxists, of various factional permutations, accuse other people of being "fascist", simply because those others did not subscribe to the dogmas of Socialism and Collectivism.
Fascism is not just an ideology. It is also a TACTICAL methodology that can be used to pursue ANY ideological agenda. Fascist tactics can be used even by those who claim to be opposed to Fascist ideology. The physical attacks attempted, by Leftist students, against speakers from the Minutemen are a perfect example. Pol Pot . . . a man schooled in Marxism . . . was not fundamentally different in INTENT from Hitler. Both Pol Pot and Hitler wanted to create their OWN VERSION of the "pure" utopian society. They were BOTH willing to use fascist genocidal terror to rid their own societies of what THEY regarded as the sources of moral impurity . . . even though the respective IDEOLOGIES that each one claimed to represent are, at least in THEORY, diametrically opposed to each other.

Dear Alphabet (mrcmrsla;we/whatever),
You asked what a child porn advocate is. I'm not sure why this confused you, but here's the answer:

A child porn advocate is someone who advocates child porn.

Please let me know if I can help clear anything else up for you.

Toodles!

childporn advocate
just for my own personal edification just exctly what is a child porn advocate.

hmmm
BCE/CE

BFD & SOL

semantics
The problem with the use of BCE/CE, beside the more ideological problems Mike mentioned, is that it semantically doesn't add anything to the language. WIth the use of BCE/CE, the break in eras is still based on the BC/AD break (aka, the birth of Christ). So, the years are still the same (as in, this year is both 2008 CE and AD 2008). There is no other reasoning for placing the break between BCE and CE at this point in time.

The professors I have spoken to about this issue say that using Christian years is problematic because not all the regions/times we are studying/teaching are Christian. But they refuse to use instead the calendars of those cultures, claiming that that would be too confusing for their students.

As a history professor and one who thinks that words need to reflect actual meaning, I explain to my students why I think the use of BCE/CE is unnecessary, but make no mandates about which convention they use. I am still waiting for an answer from my colleagues as to why BCE/CE is useful - that is, an answer that stems from academic explanation rather than emotion. For me, the use of BCE/CE is silly not because it is offensive to Christianity but because it adds nothing to the discussion and is more often than not the source of more confusion.

Drama queen?
Gawd,Will,I thought that was YOUR title.

evolving language
Will claims this is all part of the natural evolution of language.

NACK. Language naturally evolves with common usage, not through authoritarian coercion.

PC dogma believes that language and thought are bidirectionally connected -- so if you can control the way people express themselves, you can change the way they think.

The pompous arrogance behind this is offensive to the point of nausea.

Bob Munck: Denominations
Technically, you are correct, but the establishment clause was included so that the federal government would not sponsor a religion (Christian denomination) in conflict with the individual states' sponsored religions (Christian denominations).

Backbone
What's the matter with you Mike, Christians are supposed to roll over, not fight. Keep up the good work.

Oops
"no" should be "not"... late night, ya know.

And I say to will: Aw, sugar, why no just dispense with all of the niceties and truly call them what they are: political pimps. Now, doesn't THAT sound nice?

Don't be a drama queen.

And I say to Vulcan, you are either hopelessly stupid or very good at tongue-in-cheek rhetoric. Anybody who thinks another mortal is a "god" has to be an undeniably brain-washed liberal lunatic, which is America's biggest problem to date. Political correctness, ah yes, what an absolute ignorant attitude!

But, all is not lost. Thankfully, there are enough of us who still retain common sense to see to it that those who lack any, will NEVER win!

And why should Michael's feathers get so
ruffled anyway with the discouragement of "mankind"? Like "mailperson" or "personhood" (yes, yes! these are clumsy and obnoxious terms, but at least) it attempts to redress the inequality inherent in LANGUAGE.

We change our Constitution giving women the right to vote. Some states are redefining marriage, giving gay couples the same advantages heterosexuals have traditionally taken for granted. Blacks no longer adhere to Jim Crow laws. In other words, the CULTURE changes to ameliorate it's inequities... so why not words? Why not language?

Again, (and admittedly), "congressperson" is a clumsy attempt. But it is a STRIVING for a more perfect equality. The teacher deducting points for using "mankind" was doing the same. And leave it to Chicken Little Mike to tell us that the sky is falling.

Economizing on Language: The Irony
The PC crowd gets loonier by the minute. Language is used to commmunicate. Intelligent people economize. It's interesting people would want to use "BCE" or whatever other numbskullian convention the Thought Police want to initiate, but want to add a syllable to mankind kind. At my college, I listened to the president correct someone who used "grantsmanship" rather than grantspersonship." Gotta go to sensitivity training.

Vulcan and Will
I hate any multiple posts and I have never done more than 1, but Vulcan and Will have obvious fantasies about Obama. Probably made by pouring over chapters of Audacity of Hope and making the pages all sticky after reading them.

Their other friends read about torture at Guantanamo bay and do the same thing. Somehow it just brings out the animal in them. The Will and Vulcan line, beat me, make me feel cheap, I love avery minute of it, more, more!

Bravo!
I read your columns religiously, (ah, I don't mean secularly) and they are the bomb that is needed to explode this fascist sytem that is creeping into every nook and cranny of American life. Keep up the great work and have faith there is a huge ground swelling in support. I suspect it will break loose sometime near the start of the next election cycle, after we've had 4 years of the great PC Prez. Obama, in 2012BC.

Not a Lawyer
"the First Amendment Establishment Clause was meant to keep the federal government from establishing one particular Christian denomination as an official government church."

It is religion
It's time to realize PC is a religion. The high whiches and warlocks are amongst the professors and environmentalists. (Al Gore, David Suzuki, and the church of Sierra Legal Foundation amongst them) Yes there are different churches and branches but they are the same core religion.. It is the church of Regressive European Secular Socialists.
They are, at their core Anti-humanists.. It's hard to nail down any positives of their movement

RJ

Will
Will is enough to rationalize retroactive abortion as a parental alternative. He must surely make his parents, teachers and authority figures of his childhood cringe when they hear his name.

The old saying, send the kids to school, and what do they do? Eat the books or appear on Jerry Springer.

Will is a fine example of the PC world and I hope he continues to write his drivel.

atta boy Mike!!
Thanks for standing against the (hot) wind of academia and its political correctness. Their secular humanism and moral relativism have made everyone "become more politically correct".
Hogwash!!!
One can be direct without being offensive just as you have suggested. The academics would never survive in the unprotected non-institutional real world.
My hat off to you, Sir!!

Dear Vulcan
I would have laughed at your comment, had I not met a real live person who espouses your sentiments. So I can honestly say that I do not know if you are being sarcastic, or truthful.

Take them on but be careful
Those who trod this path had better beware. Laws and facts do not apply to the PC crowd when their status is challenged.

The state bar here in Arizona has authored their own complaint(s) against the Maricopa County attorney, Andrew Thomas for enforcing immigration laws passed by the voters.

They want him disbarred and the facts be damned. He is on the wrong side of the PC crowd. You can fing this assault in the Arizona Republic viewpoints editorial today. Or AZ central.com archives.

If any of you think Dr. Adams is overstating the problem you are way behind the curve.

Michael: So many issues here...
Most atheists believe in the historicity if Jesus. He was a radical rabbi. He lived (like men before and after him), he died (like men before and after him), and our world history is rife with religious zealots. Jesus sounds like a good enough guy, tempering down the "wrathful" nature of the Old Testament God, and giving him a "loving, merciful" makeover. Atheists use BC/AD and even BCE/CE interchangably.

You are riled up about it because you have an ax to grind. You are sensitive here. Admit it. You take it as a "war" on christianity (so like Bill O'Reilly's perennial "war on Christmas", where saying "season's greetings" is an affront, a salty slap in the face to all god-fearing believers).

You people feel slighted and affronted and, yes, VICTIMIZED! at every turn. People who use BCE are now called "fascists" by distraught evangelicals (by the way, religious conservatives have so over-used, and inappropriately used, the word "fascist" that it is now effectively meaningless. It's a form of crying wolf).

If you cons have a legitimate grievance about BC/AD, Target's use of the phrase "Season's Greetings" (dastardly omitting the traditional "Christmas)", the lack of prayer and "creationist theory" in school, take it to the voters, take it to the courts, just stop this unending victimization complex. It's just more crying wolf. Or you can claw and scratch the ground underneath you as the culture slowly changes.

So Sad
I know that come January everything will be better. Obama has the courage to bring the world together in peace and harmony. Look how this mixed race child has healed the liberal side of America. Though not a god Obama has the potential to lead with wonders and amazing acts. I would die for Obama and help to bring the changed world into being.

Long past time
This dictatorial PC crap has gone on for far too long. We must all fight back. I think the studendts involved should date their papers as follows: 4,500,000,002,008 CE. If we are forced to ignore the birth of Christ as a starting point, let's go with another "birth".

I am sick of attacks on the basic philosophies that made this nation possible. Anything which reduces the importance of Protestant Christianity, English common law or our Constitution chips away at the very foundations and reduces us to just another country. All at our collective peril.

Let the moonbats loose
I suspect you'll get the usual blathers of those who will call you out for your "nasty" sounding column. The loony left is so busy trying to rewrite history they forget what day it is. Sadly, college students today feel helpless to challenge their self righteous teachers as their grades all hinge on telling the teachers what they want to hear. Thanks for standing up for them, and encouraging them to be radicals. Yes, it is "radical" when you depart loudly away from the "accepted" norm - not necessarily the truth. The academic "accepted" norm is "shut up and don't challenge my idiocy".
