Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Imagine that you have raised your child be self-reliant, self-directing, honest, law abiding, considerate of the rights and feelings of others, and committed to cooperating with others toward shared goals for win-win outcomes. Imagine that you have taught your child to act with honesty and forthrightness in his occupational and financial dealings and personal relationships. Imagine that you have taught him the usual standards of decency in respect to sexual, aggressive and acquisitive impulses and that modesty and restraint are better standards than showing off.

Imagine that you have taught your child that when he accidentally harms or injures someone, especially through some negligent act, he is morally obligated to apologize to his victim and attempt to compensate him for the injury as best he can.

Imagine that you have taught your child that he must accept the risks and consequences of his actions, whether good or bad, take personal responsibility for his mistakes, hold himself accountable for his failures, and try to remedy his shortcomings. Imagine that you have taught him to judge the faults and failings of others as objectively as possible, but not falsely blame or scapegoat others for wrongs they have not committed.

Imagine further that you have taught your child that it is morally wrong to use force against others, exploit others, manipulate others, or deceive others for personal gain at their expense. Imagine that you have taught him that in a free society he and every other human being has a property right in his own body that protects him from being enslaved or indentured by anyone, including a government, for any cause whatever. Imagine that you have taught him that he has a right to own something that he has earned or acquired by mutual consent or by gift or by luck. And imagine that you have taught him that he has a right to defend himself and the things he owns.

Imagine that you have taught your child that altruism is a virtue and that charitable contributions and volunteer efforts on behalf of persons who are disadvantaged is one way of being a good person, and a legitimate basis, among others, for self-esteem.

Imagine that you have taught your now adult child that if he has children of his own he is obligated to have them in a stable and committed marriage because that institution is the best arrangement we know of for effectively rearing children. Imagine further that your child has learned that once he has his own children, he has a moral imperative to provide them with the love, affection, protection, discipline, moral guidance, education, medical care, and social training they need, even if he has to sacrifice personally and financially for them. Imagine that you have taught your now adult child that his children are his and his spouse’s responsibilities, not the responsibilities of anyone else.

Imagine further that you have taught your child that if he is unable to strive for these standards of adult behavior because of some genuine disability, then his first duty is to rehabilitate himself, if possible, so as not to be a burden to others, but if rehabilitation is not possible, then his next duty is to accept the voluntary caretaking of others, express his heartfelt gratitude to them for their efforts, and reciprocate in whatever way he can for their benefit.

Imagine that you have taught your now adult child that although he has been entitled to your caretaking over the course of his childhood, he is not entitled to caretaking or anything else from anyone else in the world, but must instead earn whatever he hopes to get from them by offering something in return. Imagine that you have taught your child that no one owes him anything unless he and they have entered into some binding agreement, and that the obligation to cooperate with others by mutual consent is the logical consequence of individual liberty.

Imagine that you have taught your child that individual liberty is the highest political good, because if it isn’t, then there is no limit to the wrongs that can be justified against any individual in the name of some other good, such as the good of “the American people” or the good of “society” or the good of “the poor” or “the little guys” or “minorities” or “hard working families.”

Now suppose that this young man or woman you have raised according to these ideals becomes old enough to vote. How eager do you think he or she will be to vote for a candidate whose programs use the power of government to take something from some persons without their consent and give it to others? How eager do you think he or she will be to vote for government regulations that restrict freedom rather than enhance it?

For programs that encourage government dependency instead of self-reliance? For programs that attack the moral and legal foundations of individual liberty? For programs that invite the citizen to become a ward of the state, as if he has been adjudicated incompetent and in need of a guardian?

By what line of reasoning will the adult child you have raised convince himself to vote for a candidate whose political culture encourages sexual acting out with its resulting sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, unnecessary abortions and the catastrophic effects of sexual infidelity on marriages, children and families? How eager will your adult child be to vote for a candidate whose political culture rationalizes violence, excuses financial irresponsibility, condones substance abuse, encourages blaming and complaining, insists on political correctness, exploits the victim-villain theme, and authorizes all abortion on demand? By what line of reasoning will your now adult child convince himself that an education or job should be given to someone based on skin color or financial status instead of skills?

It looks like about half of all Americans don’t understand how life and liberty really work, or they wouldn’t be voting for the madness that passes for modern liberalism. No one committed to the ideals of self-reliance and voluntary cooperation or any of the other ideals just noted can reasonably seek the morally bankrupt collectivism that dominates our contemporary political scene. So we’d better take a second look at how were bringing up our kids -- and ourselves. We’d better take a second look at what we expect from government. A lot of people these days feel entitled to health care, child care and retirement benefits paid for by someone else. A lot of people expect governments to care about them, feel their pain, and provide for their material security. Not a lot of people these days understand that freedom takes work. Not a lot of us are willing to assume the responsibilities of competent adults. Judging from how we vote, many of us would rather be children of the state. Maybe the burdens of freedom are too heavy for us Americans. Maybe the price of freedom is too high for us.

Not to worry, though; we can take the easy way out. We can give our votes to our parental politicians. They will take good care of us, because they care so much for us. Then we won’t have to be competent.

Perfectly said (except)
I just finished reading The Liberal Mind. It's great!

I think MerryColin's comment re abortion, however, are a necessary qualifier.

WOW! (with one exception)
Unbelievably BEAUTIFUL!!! I am printing this and sending it to my parents in a Thank You card. This is how I was raised--no kidding. And it mirrors my sentiments exactly. The ONLY exception I take is with the comment about "abortion on demand". Why? Because I have always been taught that the highest form of personal property is my very body. I also was taught that it was the temple of my soul and that I alone was responsible for keeping myself healthy. I believe that the state (aka the public) has no right to make a decision about anything I may choose to do to my body and, until a child is born it is a part of MY body. I do not advocate on either side of the abortion issue as this is a highly personal issue for the pregnant woman. A woman raised in this way will, I am certain, almost always make the best decision for herself. To allow "the parent state" to contradict what "you have taught your child that individual liberty is the highest political good, because if it isn’t, then there is no limit to the wrongs that can be justified against any individual in the name of some other good, such as the good of “the American people” or the good of “society” or the good of “the poor” or “the little guys” or “minorities” or “hard working families.” or "the unborn".

Pastor E
Good post, but you should know that liberals don't like to be deterred by facts.

Akingu88, you have a problem.
If you believe that the Jews are the problem to everything as you have stated above, you are the problem, not them or anyone else.

As far as your comments - I know for a fact that Israel does NOT get more money than other countries. It isn't even in the top 25. India is first, followed closely by Russia and then China. In fact, India is the only country in the top ten that isn't Communist. Even Palestine gets more money pre year than Israel does.

If you continue to believe the Jews are the cause of every problem in the world and hate them (or any other race) you will never accomplish anything of value since all your efforts will be turned to hate rather than something else. I feel sorry for you. Try to see things without discrimination and you will do much better.

(And I am NOT Jew by any stretch of the imagination. I am 3/4 German and 1/4 American Indian.)

My children were raised that way.
And I watch them with pride now as they raise their own families, trying to teach them the same things.

One son has divorced and remarried. He gained custody of his son. One of his comments struck me to the heart.

"Her parents raised her to be lazy and expect everything to be given to her. My parents raised me to work and earn what I get. My parents are still married to each other and love us. Her parents aren't. I want to give my son the same thing my parents gave me since I think you did a better job of raising me than her parents did raising her."

Hey CK
It is the courts which have grabbed much power beyond the checks and balances built into our Constitution. It is the courts which have chnged the legal landscape in vast ways, often by the opinion of five justices, striking down democratically instituted laws and creating "Constitutional" prohibitions our of thin air, where none exist.

Just who has the president "jailed without charges"? Are you speaking of the military holding unlawful enemy combatants? A greqat many of these have now been processed out, and are back in their own homelands. While held, they were coddled.

Your point of view is totally misinformed. President Bush's ability to even get the justices of his choice onto the bench in the federal court system has been almost nil.

Compared to FDR and even Truman, he has been able to control and do very little. His hands have been and continue to be much more tied than theirs were.

You are barking up the wrong tree.

Iowawoman
You are the stuff real Americans are made of, the pioneering spirit and independence that made this country what it is and what we hope to keep. Congratulations.

Personal Responsibility
Dr. Rossiter needs to be heard by our country!!

Assault on individual freedoms
I am deeply concerned about the assault on individual freedoms under the current administration, and can't fathom how Dr. Rossiter could possibly have missed them. From imprisoning people without charge or legal remedy, to tapping people's phones and e-mails without a court order, to undermining America's system of checks and balances by concentrating power in the Executive branch, President Bush's administration has made a mockery of our civil liberties. People across the political spectrum have been speaking out because we must put country before party. Patriots simply have to notice that our freedoms are being undermined and speak out against this un-American authoritarianism before it's too late. Our ancestors, and our descendents, are counting on us to stand up and preserve the freedom America has stood for for 232 years, and not allow it to be destroyed from within.

Unfortunately, it is not the readers of
Townhall (with a few notable exceptions) that need to be told this. It is the second or third generational social moron who can not even fathom what decent people have as morals, ethics, and principles. I have given up hoping for this scenario to happen and am actually more active in trying to find a place to move to that encompasses everything that has been listed. A place where we re-enact the original constitution from ground zero and where any person with less than a perfect "Constitutional IQ" as administered through a test and previous actions is disqualified from being a politician. Period.

Some good points...
... but I fear we conservatives are too willing to accept some of the same paternalistic arguments if they support our causes.

Akingu88
I disagree with you.

Genie
It was Franklin, not Jefferson.

Competence and Freedom
Sir, Thank you for your great column! You have it totally correct. The Bible verse, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it", is the principle that says the same thing. It is so important for parents to realize this, in order for our nation to continue. Our children and grands are the future, and they need to be trained, in order to be responsible enough to keep freedom. Being responsible is what keeps it! That is what the Bible teaches, right, wrong, relationships, honor to God, responsibility----NOT religion!

We were talking the other day, about the need for wisdom in those who vote. The subject was the same as yours. Why do we require those who desire to drive, to have licenses and passing of tests? Why do we require those who want certain jobs, to have qualifications? Why not allow two year olds to vote, if all the qualifications for voting, is to be a citizen? We need to get back to what our founding fathers required, in order to preserve freedom: Only those who had shown responsibility by owning property, had the qualifications to vote. When someone has grown up to the point, that they have learned what to do to be responsible enough to own property, they have shown capability to make wise decisions.
Even on the day that they signed the Constitution, when a bystander asked Thomas Jefferson, as they were leaving, "Sir: what have you given us?" He replied, "A Republic, if you can keep it!" He undoubtedly knew enough about HISTORY, to know that democracies had NEVER worked! It takes responsible people to keep freedom, and there needs to be a way to get back to what WORKS.
Thank you,
Genie who cares

another failing of the article is
an assumption of the perfectibility of humans based on his
reasoning.

It is perfectly possible that someone raised as Rossiter says could
turn around and before a Europeanesque social welfare state simply
because they know others were not.

In other words, it is perfectly possible that a child raised well (not to
perfection as I think this column assumes) will have a mind of their
own. One that might challenge even their parents deepest held
beliefs.

is the argument for no safety net?
That's how it reads and that is doomed to fail.

The questions are how much of a safety net and for what reasons,
for what persons, for how long?

None, will fail at the first major tragedy, recession, depression.
Too much leads to implosion.

Lyle
I "Hope", that you are a better Doctor, than you are a debater. If a "Voter" makes a choice, one can only assume, it is one that addresses his or her self-interest.If the aforementioned is the case,"US" must then count the ballots and live with the results. The mere fact, that in America we have a system, which allows citizen participation, speaks to the fact, that their vote counts.Well, let "US" just count the votes. Those who are unwilling to live under the conditions, which the vote produces, have a choice. You may vote to STAY or vote to LEAVE.It's call CHOICE!!!

I agree completely
with everything in the article. That is why I supported the candidacy of Ron Paul. That is why I sent money to Ron Paul, the first politician to whom I have ever sent money in my 48 years. However, the Party Faithful, with the help of the MSM, blacklisted this great patriot. Now we have no candidate espousing the truths expounded upon in this article.

As for you, Akinqu88, you need help. Dr. Rossiter is a psychiatrist; perhaps you should make an appointment with him.

ANOTHER Excellent Column by Dr. R.

Dr. Rossiter has written one or two other columns on TH.

I STRONGLY suggest that everyone go to "More+" and read those columns as well.

Thank you, Dr. Rossiter...
Thank you for reminding all of us how our great country is being systematically destroyed by liberals. Once, when I was young, impressionable, and stupid, I wanted to be part of the in-crowd. I was a non-thinking, left-winged looney, whose only concern was the mantra du jour: Peace! Love! Hate the Establishment! Down with war-mongers! Abortion is a woman's right! Make love---not war! Baby Killers! Decriminalize drug use! I loved McGovern. I loved Carter. I loved Dukakis! But then one day I woke up and found that those left-winged looneys really didn't care about America. They only cared about their own agenda and desire to stay in power by promising people anything, costing any amount, just keep them dependent on big government for all their needs. We have become a nation of welfare babies who increasingly must remain on the welfare teat because we simply cannot or will not function on our own.

Thank you, Dr. Rossiter, for your well written and poignant article. 5 STARS!

A Prime Example
You, Sir, are a prime example of, by your own words, "other turd world scum".

I always used to think
Dr. Rossiter's imaginings were the template for all of us until this country stated to secularize, humanize, and diversify and politicalize human behavior.

Warp and Woof
Lucid, carefully crafted, and accurate! Wonderful piece that emphasizes the warp and woof of our founders intent and thrust for governing under the political system of a Democratic Republic. Admiral Mullen just wrote a letter to all the Officers, men and women in our armed forces enjoining them to be apolitical and avoid politics. Substantially true as a philosophy for the military; it flies in the face of all Officer's Oath of Office which is to uphold the Constitution against all enemies domestic and foreign. Our Constitution is a Constitution developed for a Democratic Republic--if our military detects a movement by either political party to alter that concept, they MUST make a military move to thwart the effort. Admiral Mullen speaks to the Greater Good; that sounds far too Marxist to me.

imagine

im reminded of the beatles song. imagine that you can do all these lovely things and still allow your child to go outside and play, to watch TV, to play video games, to listen to the music to be with his realitves once in a while, to stay indoors at recess rather than go play with the other kids in the playgroud, no movies, no newspapers, etc.. Unless that is you plan to spend hours and hours explaining things all over to him again each time he does one of these things and becomes tainted. if you do this how will you explain the fact that you dont seem to have any time for doing other worthwhile things. busy busy busy

Been there and did that
My boys were brought up that way. The younger one is at university and going through the occasional spasm of belief that the government that cannot deliver the mail on time can be trusted to see that his Grandfathers heart trouble is promptly and properly treated -- but because he has a good foundation, he will get over it.

As for the reason his cohort believes they can have everything they want and somebody else will pay -- that is the way they were and are brought up. It will be really interesting when Generation Whine is in charge and trying to get their children to come to work on time, do their jobs, and not steal everything that is not nailed down before they leave early....

Hand-out rights, versus earned rights
This has been pure reinwater for a seed of an idea that has been slowly swelling in my brain. We all know that democracy is self-destructing, specifically for the reason that so many voters just don't have a clue. So I'm wondering about a social management system in which it becomes enshrined that ALL "right's" have - just like the right to drive a car or get married - be "earned" through a test or special achievement. etc. This would include the 'right' to vote being based on preset minimum standards of being properly informed (and NOT via the media - duh!)about all the issues.

After all, voters have got four years between votes in which to study for the examination. It's a free country, those who wish to drop out can do so -and simply don't get to vote.

Uh-oh - probably not a good idea. The sudden disappearance of the 'donkey' vote would surely put the Democrats out of business. Even though it can only functiuon with the (informed!) sanction of the (informed!) part of the population, we'd end up with a one party state!

Which is at least as ideologically awful as a ship being controlled by only one captain. Surely, as with ships, a recipe for disaster.....?

Kind sir, You have laid out the blueprint for the successful salvation of our country.

I know many already do all these things you promote, but sadly, too many of our leaders merely pander for votes to the lowest common denominator.

yes, I also know, they have no idea what the term LCD means.

No need for me to Imagine
I did raise my son in this fashion. I was also a single mother ( his father died when he was 18 months ,I was 20yrs at the time) He learned by example. We were very poor at first. He watched me go to work. He helped me as he grew. We Painted, tiled, fixed and cleaned the places that we rented for deposits and less rent.He mowed lawns and shovled snow for pocket money. We always had a roof over our heads and were never hungry. Eveything we owned was second hand. We were respected and happy. My son now owns his own business ( remodeling, painting, repairing homes ) Wonder where he got that from? :o)

Damn Straight!
Absolutely, dead nuts in the center of the bulls-eye! I could not posibly agree more. You've nailed it, aced it, drilled it, skewered it. It's so exactly how I feel when I look at politicians and think "How on God's Green Earth could someone vote for him and what he stands for, (or her)?
