Why a Black Artist Replaced the National Anthem

Is President Obama's Afghanistan plan a step in the right direction?

Last week in Denver, almost all the values of the post-1960s left were exhibited in one act.

It happened on the Denver mayor's most important day -- the one in which he was to deliver his annual State of the City Address. The day was to begin with the singing of the National Anthem by the black jazz singer Rene Marie. But Ms. Marie had, by her own admission, long had other plans. Instead of the National Anthem, she sang "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," a song written in 1899 and often referred to today as the Black National Anthem.

What Marie did embodied a plethora of leftist ideals and characteristics: Ethical relativism, multiculturalism, the supremacy of feelings, the belief that artists are above normal ethical standards and group victimization.

We begin with ethical relativism. The left's opposition to Judeo-Christian values is first and foremost an opposition to objective, or universal, ethics. Ethics and morality are relative. There is no objective or universal standard of right and wrong. We are each the source of our own values.

These lessons were learned well by Marie. The notion that lying to the mayor of Denver (a Democrat, as it happens) when she agreed to his invitation to sing the National Anthem was unethical or immoral is foreign to Ms. Marie.

But how could she morally defend something so obviously immoral?

That is what ethical relativism made possible thanks to a number of values of the left.

One such leftist value is multiculturalism. Since the 1960s, a major goal of the left has been to weaken American national identity and replace it with other cultural, national, racial and ethnic identities (in effect, changing the motto of the United States from "From Many, One" to "From One, Many"). It has pursued this goal through bilingual education, election ballots in multiple languages, numerical guidelines in American history textbooks concerning the percentage of space allotted to given minorities, opposition to declaring English America's national language, and rendering the term "flag waving" a pejorative that implies quasi-fascist sentiments.

One could well imagine a member of any number of other minorities substituting a different song for the National Anthem. The left has successfully taught millions of Americans to honor other national identities while either fearing or disparaging American nationalism. That lesson, too, was clearly learned by Marie.

The idea of a Black National Anthem is a multiculturalist paradigm. A black freedom song, a black hymnal, songs that gave African slaves on American soil some comfort and hope in the midst of their suffering, and, for that matter, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" -- these all fit perfectly into an American national identity. Indeed, all Americans should know such songs. But a Black National Anthem, when substituted for the National Anthem, means that there are two nations on American soil, a black one and an American one.

The left's second contribution to Marie's value system has been its elevation of feelings above other values. For example, one determines right and wrong on the basis of how one feels (as opposed to, let us say, asking what one's religion, or God, or any moral law that transcends one's own feelings would say on a given matter).

Now, the elevation of one's feelings above other considerations is generally viewed as a form of narcissism. And while narcissism is as old as humanity, until the 1960s it was generally regarded as a character flaw. Since the 1960s, however, it was more often heralded as a virtue. From recreational drug use to recreational sex, acting on one's feelings, actions of self-centered narcissism, has been glorified.

The core of this attitude lies in the left's veneration of feelings. How one feels became all-important. It even determines morality, the rightness or wrongness of an action. Thus, a generation of young people has been raised with the question, "How do you feel about it?" not "Is it right or wrong?"

Thus, Marie justified what she did in terms of feelings: "I want to express how I feel about living in the United States as a black woman, as a black person," she said. Her feelings were what mattered, and they were more important than elementary decency.

A third contribution of the left's values to what Marie did is the elevation of the artist to the status of demigod. If the feelings of mere mortals can determine what is right and wrong, the feelings of an artist are even more important.

There is no hubris like that of many contemporary artists. At some point in the second half of the 20th century the belief arose that artists formed a moral elite.

Given the moral idiocies that have been more the norm than the exception among 20th century artists -- the countless artists who have glorified Communism, Fascism and Nazism -- facts alone render the idea of artist-as-moral-beacon foolish. But even in theory the idea has no merit. There is nothing in art that renders an artist more morally elevated than a sanitation worker.

Sure enough, being an artist was Marie's justification for her dishonesty. Asked on her website, "Wasn't this dishonest?" she responded:

"I can see how it may be perceived that way. But I looked at it a different way: I am an artist. I cannot apologize for that. It goes with the risky territory of being an artist." Marie also told the press, "I don't think it is necessary for artists to ask permission to express themselves artistically."

Artists are above morality. While you and I should not deceive people, artists may.

The fourth contribution of the left to the Marie episode is its constant reinforcement of a sense of victimhood among all Americans who are not male, white, heterosexual and Christian. The moral consequence of this is that the victim, like the artist, like the feelings-determine-morality individual, can do more or less whatever he pleases.

It should be noted that many individuals on the left condemned what Marie did. And it is not for me to judge whether they did so out of conviction or political necessity; one must generally judge actions, not motives. But to the sincere liberal and leftist, I ask: Do you not see how left/liberal values made this episode possible?

Individuals on the left may condemn what happened in Denver City Hall on July 1, 2008. But, in fact, it was a triumph of leftist values.

Final note: If you do not now fear for America's future, please go on the Internet and watch the Denver city officials respectfully watch a woman substitute her own song for that of the National Anthem. Watch how not a single official stopped her, or even demanded that the National Anthem be sung afterward. And listen to the applause. Then you will fear for our country's future.

A tremendous lack of respect.
Thank you for saying this Dennis. This woman demonstrated a tremendous lack of respect for her fellow citizens.

Did she hurt your "feelings"
What's wrong with the right? They cheer for war, guns, and violence....kill, bomb, kill, nuke em, kill, shoot em, kill...

But peaceful protests (and an occasional nipple) sends them into tithers.

Fear ruled so those present....
...did not pull the plug on this ignorant, self-absorbed and ego-soaked adolescent disguised as a woman. Can anyone imagine the cries of "racism" should someone interrupt the sista as she went tribal? Career and job security trumps courage anytime in today's America.

It wouldn't matter if she were stopped, anyway. You just can't fix stupid, folks.

And Mathew; you just have to put down the joint and move out of your mother's basement.

Wow!
The response from Kimberly in CT is reason #275,536 that our country is going down the tubes. I honestly stand in awe of the confusion in her sentiments. Wow.

I weep for my country.

Kimberly needs to think this through...
How would Kimberly feel if someone sang their own song at her wedding instead of the one she wanted.

It's just disrespectful. Make your statements in the correct venue.

We are Americans, not African-Americans, German-Americans or Irish-Americans. Quit trying to seperate us!

Black National Anthem
Nothing surprises me anymore.

This tragic example of egotism is so common for the Leftist entertainers and the Hollywood Marxists that it makes me even more determined to vote conservatives into office.

These people think only of themselves and what makes them feel good instead of their Country. I feel sorry for them for they have a mental disorder. A1sether, Korean Vet. God Bless America.

This Sounds Like "The Producers" To Me..
I do believe it would be understandable for someone who couldn't recite the entire National Anthem. Heck, I have a hard time remebering the whole first couple of verses. I'll try to type my way, though:

"Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hail by the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stipes and bright stars, through the perilling moss(?), la dee daa dee da..."

As you can see, it's not as easy as you think it is to recite the National Anthem just from memory. But to think there's all this outrage, it's comparable to the final scene in "The Producers" where everyone in the audience has this shocked, aghast look while watching "Springtime for Hitler" unfolding before their eyes. Am I the only one who thinks, "Isn't this just a little bit overreacting?" I mean, it's not like she took a puppy away from a little kid or stole candy from a baby. I do think some people do take this kind of thing way too seriously. Yes, the Star-Spangled Banner has a deep meaning about how are flag was able to withstand the warfare and bloodshed of the War of 1812, but sometimes, these things are taken way too seriously. I don't think artists like this singer do this because they want to feel superior to anyone. If they did, they'd be Britney Spears or Madonna, but the fact is, they have as much a right to freedom of speech as any other one of us. It's only logical, isn't it?

$
Presumably she was to be paid for a service. Since she did not perform the service which was to sing the US anthem, presumably they did not pay her for singing the song of her choice which was a voluntary action not the one agreed upon by the parties. Has any reporter asked? Hopefully the city council was not so lacking in courage, and other words could be used, as to pay her regardless.

Outa here
Was going to post, saw the liberals braying for attention as usual, so I'm bailing out.

Can't stand their presence; it's that simple. Not worth trying to squeeze in a few thoughtful words. Who cares?

Patriotism is important...
but it is no longer taught in schools. In fact many schools teach that the USA is the perpetrator of every evil in the world. The white male may be in serious danger of being singled out for extreme disdain if Obama becomes president. The problem with liberal elites is that they base their action on personal prejudice. I hear from liberals that I speak to rants about the evil of the white man and the Jew. We may be in for divisiveness that many of us have not experienced before in our lifetime.

LITTLE BLIND CARROTS
Liberals squeeze in and we throw up. IT'S THAT SIMPLE. THEY'RE LIKE A LOT OF LITTLE BLIND CARROTS PAWING THE AIR AROUND THEM, AND REPEATING THE DAY'S BUZZWORD. IT AMAZES ME THAT THEY GET THROUGH THE DAY.

GOOD POINT ABOUT THE WOMAN GETTING PAID, THOUGH, IF THE OFFICIALS WERE TOO DUMB/DUMBSTRUCK/INTIMIDATED TO STOP HER, THEY PROBABLY WERE TOO POLITICALLY CORRECT TO REFUSE TO PAY HER, FOR FEAR OF OFFENDING HER. LIKE SHE CARED ABOUT OFDFENDING THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.

Thank you- well said!

To answer a couple posts in one..
Well, Kimberly is a Marxist anti-American.
What else can you expect from her?
To Kimberly: Although she probably can't or won't understand. Are you that dense? She was
supposed to sing the National Anthem, pure and simple, and all your spending bandwith as an
excuse to denigrate this greatest nation the world has ever known isn't going to change that simple point.

Artists are the Least Qualified
Contemporary artists of various stripes generally are the LEAST qualified to make political commentary. Most have little education in history and philosophy, tend to be governed by their passions (they're artists!), are weak on current events, live in an echo chamber, and, to the extent they have any sort of code to live by, it tends to favor their hedonistic behavior rather than to spur reform. And they love adulation. Many live lives in opposition to nature--hence they detest the founding principles that rest ultimately upon nature. Passion abhors restraint.

I'll get my political wisdom elsewhere.

Was the arrogant
slug actually paid for this incident? Did it sign an agreement?

If not, what did you expect? Next time, find someone with a little integrity and honesty.

If so, where are the lawsuits?

For Kimberly
Let us all imagine what Kimberly is doing, sitting someplace in a room all alone, cursing the unfair world, that makes her only think about the complaints she has about the country that gives her the greatest freedom the world has ever known, but all she can do is bleat about imagined wrongs in this country. Most people understand with a country as free as the U.S. you might be able to see some wrongs, but to Kimbarly, the wrongs outweigh the overwhelming rights. Imagine her in her room all alone, cursing the country she knows she should love beyond all others because it gives her the right to curse her own country. Sad.

Formerly crumb-crunchers as Rush would
say; have been molded by leftist teachers for more than two score and two years.

I wonder if this girl has ever held down
a normal job?

If I was getting paid to do one thing, and I did another, just because I felt like it, I would get my walking papers in 3 seconds.

Why we have to put up with such narcisistic behavior, just because she is an "artiste," is beyond me.

Matthew

I am glad you don't mind protests, because I am protesting your rude comments about us conservatives.

If you want to invite her to sing at your event, you can let her sing whatever silly song she wants.

I suggest you go organize your event right now.

uwcharlie
I never imagine those on the left sitting in a room. They are actively involved in protests, volunteering, grass root organizations, art festivals, hugging trees, smoking pot, making love, working in Hollywood, and traveling around the world.

Others are, of course, working their butts off, making lots of money, donating it to Obama's campaign, raising families, buying HUGE houses that consume tons of energy, hiring nannies, and living the elite lifestyle while telling everyone else that they should feel guilty about theirs.

Some are noble, some are hypocrites, but few...I repeat few... are sitting in a room alone.

I see the older, frightened, conservative doing this. Their children have moved away, they no longer work, and they are scared of their own shadow.

They sit in their basement/nuclear shelter..dining on pork n beans...guns loaded..hoping that Armageddon starts before they die.

Woops! I guess our imaginations get the best of us..don't they!

Mountain Rose
My love...

If she could only sing that song at my wedding!

Weak
Note that Praeger made no effort to contact this woman and speak with here.

His article is junk journalism at its worst. He's spouting inane generalities about "the left" with no evidence whatsoever to back it up.

Whackos

Out in force I see.

Matthew, as the pro from Dover said, get a job and move out of your parents basement.

Kimburly, I'll pray for you.

Pershing, what are you? A Perfessor of Social Sciences? Oxymorons abound in your world.

(Intentionally misspelled for all you junk journalists)

Liberalism is a mental disorder ! !
Leftism is the full blown disease!!
It's all about emotion !...only the political left could produce such fools..."Those whome the GODS wish to destroy...they first make mad!"
If Bill Clinton is a chameleon, then OBAMA is liquid Mercury!!

YOU'RE RIGHT,AS USUAL DENNIS
When I think of the Left in this Country, I am filled with despair!...how can we fight a War against the menace of Radical Islam when a large part of the country is suffering from a mental disorder?....oh woe is me!......misery...I'm just waiting for the inevitable and overdue DARWIN AWARD!!...Mr OBAMA himself...oh misery!!

Offended.
The National Anthem is for everyone... White, Brown, Black, Red, Yellow. Everyone of those colors has fought for and died for this nation.

The Black National Anthem is for... Blacks. It doesn't seem fair. I can't ever be a member of that club.

I'm old school though. I'll be dead some day and you all can disrespect any damn thing you want. But what goes around comes around and sure enough somebody of some culture or some other color will be disrespecting you too. I guess we can't ever get past that.

By the way, don't be upset that I called you by your color and not your heritage. I can't seem to mix or hyphenate another country or continent's name with America. No disrespect intended, it's a pet peeve of mine.

I just like thinking that we're all Americans.

to the tune of the National Anthem
Rene Marie did not sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing". She sang the lyrics of this song to the tune of the National Anthem.

Ms. Marie describes her struggles to reconcile the humiliation she experienced as a black child in the 50s and 60s with her love of country here:

Yet another example
of the spoiled, cosseted brat running nekked into the cocktail party shouting POO POO HEAD!

If you keep on telling the brat how cute she is when she does these things, she is going to keep on doing them, and pretty soon her sister is going to start doing them too.

The day you grab her by the arm and whack her with the hairbrush in front of folks, she will stop.

I believe the Mexicans have their own version of the Anthem as well. Someday you had better pick up the hairbrush or be prepared for more outbursts from those who still think long after the bloom is off the rose, that they are cute, because Mommy told them so.

Kimberly
As usual, you are obscenely misinformed.

First of all, the suicide rate in the military (whether returning soldiers or those in the field) is less than that of the general public. It would therefore follow that the chances of you dying by your own hand is greater than those in the military. Like I've said before. You're a fool.

Get you're damned facts straight before spouting you BDS blather.

Secondly, the self-absorbed little halfwit "artist" lied and changed the song she was supposed to sing without telling anyone - and frankly she isn't all that great of a singer.

You keep droning on about how Bush lied and people died. Why then, pray tell is it okay for this little twerp to lie but not Bush. Hmmm? If lying is bad, then why the double standard? Intentions? She meant well?

God, you're such a moron.

UTTER AND TOTAL DESPAIR !
Two o'clock in the morning despair hit me like a firebell in the nite....Nature is about to bestowe upon us the well deserved DARWIN AWARD for idiocy and stupidity beyond belief!!...it would take the perverted imagination of HOLLYWOOD to create the American Idol Barack hussein Obama!!....and we are seriously thinking about electing him....just as the spectre of Nuclear terrorism is looming!!....oh woe is me!!...misery....--acking Hell!!...someone ,just shoot me!! despair

Read Surrender by Cal Thomas
and connect the dots to this disgusting incident..

Hey matthew
You are pretty much right on.

I guess you could consider me an older conservative.

My children ARE all moved out (almost).

I DO sit in rooms.

AND MOSTLY...

I have a serious weakness for pork n beans.

I do some volunteering but give me a pass on that if you don't mind.

Take care.

Change?
Is this the example of CHANGE the American people are eager to vote for? And what ChANGE will there be to the Pledge of Allegiance by a person who chooses not to put his hand over his heart while reciting the Pledge, but has his fingers crossed behind his back.

The American people are being conned into electing a puppet President, whose strings will be pulled by the masterminds of his campaign and not by the American people who will put him in office. There will be CHANGE. All our FREEDOMS and LIBERTIES will be resung or rewritten to the tune or prose of the artists of the liberal left.

Tomarico,Matthew, & Kimberly
When I see posts like yours, it frightens me
Patriotism for one's country whether here or some Communtist country is Patriotism of your country. If this woman had gotten up and sung the Star Spangles Banner at a Communist rally,
she probably would have been shot at sunrise if not sooner.
I noticed the time of day you wrote your comments. You've been staying up too late! Go to bed earlier.
How would you have felt if I had gotten up before that crowd and sang my National Anthem, "Dixie?"

A great and much needed analysis.....
I hope Mr. Prager will send this to newspapers, talk shows, and all government officials.
I never heard of this singer, but you can be sure I'd never purchase anything she has recorded.
She needs to feel our scorn.

I could write the same type of article
Dennis Prager wrote here about the science teacher who burned the cross onto the kids' arms in science class and taught creationism as reported on drudge today, and say that was emblematic of the right wing. The fact is, there are foolish people on both sides, but describing some stupid thing that one left wing person did and saying that is emblematic of all left wing values makes conservatives feel good I guess, but really does not prove anything. In general,by the very stories that are selected to be covered, the left and right wing try to energize their respective bases and shower scorn on the other side -- but there are plenty of other stories that might just have well have been covered. Each side just shuts their eyes to those stories, and digs in deeper to their entrenched positions.

I am waiting
for some event, where someone will give the order to mute a microphone, stand up and explain quietly and simply that the person who varied from the agenda was over-ruled, and move everything on. Now I know that some think that Daily Kos does that. But it's even TH knows enough not to invite an open forum and then censor the ones you don't like.
If the girl had a contract to sing The National Anthem, then she was in breach of contract, and should not be paid. If Daily Kos paid me to write and anti-Bush screed, and I agreed to do it, then I should do it. If I renege and write a pro-Bush screed, I'm in breach of contract. I know it sounds simple, but some of the posters above who are defending the liar/twit, seem confused about what a contract is.
So for Matthew, Kimberly, etc. if you fail to make your morgage payments, sing the black national anthem and say "Bush lied, people died" ten times and all will be forgiven.

All the best

Wow
A well written article and the response from the left is either personal insults (I am not cheering for war, guns, and violence - never have, ever. . .and what-the-heck - kill, bomb, kill, nuke em, kill, shoot em, kill - That is a negative stereotype which does nothing to debate, defend or discuss the current story.

And Kimberly, my dear - the highest suicide rate in America is currently the age group 15-24 male - surprise - a lot of the military falls into that group - and as posted - the military's rate is still lower than civilan rates - so by that reasoning - men 18-24 should go into the military to lessen their risk of suicide.

Most of the other points (lying, replacing a National song for a preferetional racial song, the 'racial' fear of not stopping her, etc) have been addressed in the comments.

What is so frightening to me is - that she lied, no one stopped her and there are so many people who say - So What. . .

Which was Mr. Prager's whole point of the article.

Seeing how fearful one side is and how retalitory of the situation the other side is with the candidate Obama - America will be in for even worse such 'moments' should he be elected.

There goes the 1st Amendment - followed quickly by the 2nd - and then the rest won't matter.

The surge toward oppressive government
Malcom Muggeridge said "To the liberal mind, education provides the universal panacea."

This unethical and dishonest incident in Denver makes me think back to the "Deconstructionist Movement" when reading DWM's (Dead White Males) became the rage at our universities.

Looks like not only Muggeridge, but the Liberals, we right... only the 'panacea'that's being created is a postmodern, relative, Leftist one.

The singer's timing is right... Sadly, that part of the soul of America that has grown Leftist and angry seems ready to risk a run at oppressive, intolerant government as long as they think it's according to their political bend.

Muggeridge also said of Liberalism, "Previous civilizations have been overthrown from without by the incursion of barbarian hordes; ours has dreamed up its own dissolution in the minds of its own intellectual elite."

What's next?
I wonder.. would she be invited to "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," to the tune of the National Anthem at the Democratic Convention?
It would be the second time Michelle Obama will feel pride in being an American...

leftist ideals
how typical of the left to think their value system should replace long held american values just because it makes them feel better.

The left has long enabled the breakdown of education where self esteem matters more than learning actual facts and knowledge.

The left thinks that demeaning our american culture and embracing all cultures as equal makes us stronger but only turns america from it's long held value system.

This notion that the one country that has done more to secure the freedom of ohers and has risen countless times to aid in disasters is somehow less important that third world toliets that are run by corrupt dictators is beyond absurd.

But that is the left. When you believe in nothing, you stand for nothing

What I don't understand is...
why so many people such as this so called artist seem to hate America. If this great nation is so offensive to their sensibilities why don't they leave? We have no walls preventing their departure. I say if you think that the USA is the Great Satan then please leave. Too bad that these people would rather just stay here and complain.

To 7sticks
YOU may not remember all the words to the National Anthem, but this woman, being a "professional" singer should have heard it often enough to know. Secondly, if she didn't know the words before, she should have started learning them once she agreed to sing them. Thirdly, I presume there was a legal document involved and that she signed it of her own fool will. Therefore, she was contractually bound to provide the service required; namely, to sing THE National Anthem, not just a song, even if it was the same tune. If she had wanted to sing a little ditty, gratis, after fulfilling her contractual obligations, that would have been rude (I'm sure there was a schedule), but not such a blatant display of her lack of honesty.

Finally, for your erudition:
O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Another factor not mentioned
With the rise of Obama, Black separatists feel "empowered". They think it's "their moment"; not America's.

Matthew
reply 19
I was reading your post and thought it was pretty funny, then i got to the end and realized you were serious!

salt and pepper
what is the difference between black citizens voting for obama strictly because he is black and they expect him to favor a black agenda after he is elected, and white citizens voting for mccain strictly because he is white and they expect him to favor a white agenda after he is elected?

Not generalities
Pershing,

DP did not spout generalities that need to be backed up. Just to use one example, the left's promoting multiculturalism is an obvious fact. Anyone who denies it and needs proof reads the papers without seeing the news.

Black History month, Latin History Month, Asian History week, graduation ceremonies at schools attended by ethnicity, schools that ask students to bring the flag of "their" country to school on flag day, public institutions encouraging displays of ethnicity.

I could go on and on and on citing examples of policies promoting this idea, and all are from the left.

This (and the others) are social trends that are so obvious that to dismiss them as "generalities" is just ignoring things you see every day.

Many of us
would like Matthew to read the book that bears his name. Perhaps repentance will follow.

anthem
I would like to see her (or anyone) try and pull this at a sporting event , I can tell you the response wouldnt be politically correct. Unlike the ball-less folks on stage with her.

Selfish Morons
I was so glad to see Prager's article about this issue, and to see that so many good people understand how much the leftist/liberal/democrats/socialists/communists/gays (LLDSCG)are trying to tear apart our wonderful country.

I've seen the changes all happen before my eyes since the 60's, and its so clear to me that the LLDSCG's have caused all of this, starting with such things as "if it feels good, do it", "everything is beautiful, in its own way", legalized killing of children (aka, abortion), taking away the rights of children to pray in schools, eithical bumper stickers on cars, and so on.

Where will they strike next? How powerful will we, the good and decent conservatives, let them become before we put them in their place?

It is more critical that ever that conservatives get out and vote in full force and stop these selfish morons before its too late.

What if. . .
A white man had sung Dixie instead of the National Anthem?

The artiste has the right to do as she did. However, relationships have a certain Newtonian flair. Perhaps the Mayor will not invite her again. Perhaps he should not pay her (assuming it was a paid gig) because of breach of contract.

MRCMRC
thats an easy one, the black folks are voting for brother O and the whites are racist.

You know if brother O doesnt win its because the country is racist. If he wins its because the country is 49.9% racist.

Stop Her While She Was Singing?
Can't expect that to happen, that would have been racist -- wouldn't it? Get ready sane people, much more to come when Obamamama and a few dozen more Democrats get elected. Wait until the cast of characters evolves after Obamamama gets a couple of years into the show. There are many many more Sharptons and Jessee Jacksons waiting for their intros.

Message to all "Artists"
In Mozart's day entertainers were not idolized and worshiped. They were entertainers and nothing more; they ate in the back room with the servants at the big to do events. Today these self absorbed poorly educated people who happen to be able to sing etc than most people think they are more important than the average Joe. But fame is fickle and even Mozart became old news. So to all the "artists" I say - get over yourselves.

Excellent Column Dennis
Once again you have demonstrated you are the most insightful columnist here at Townhall.

What would have been interesting
is if they had politely asked her, when she was done, to NOW please sing the National Anthem.

I'd like to know if she would have refused.

...however...
Maybe she didn't know the National Anthem!!!

The left revealed
This whole episode has much to teach us
about the mindset of the leftists among us.
It is a Rosetta Stone for the future.

This “artist” promised to sing the national anthem only to gain a spot before the mic,
then did as she pleased- and blames others
to justify it.
The promise was a lie, a deception from the start.
No one should ever trust this woman again.

B-HO, also a “performer,” promises many
things, but only to gain the power of the office he seeks.
If he gains that office, he also will
do as he pleases, having lied and deceived
from the start.

Look past the words at the actions-
"Anti-American is as Anti-American does"

Kimberly
It is the sign of having no defense of a wrong when you have to resort to pointing out other wrongs that are completely unconnected.

By your logic nothing will ever be wrong, because there will always--ALWAYS--be suicides and wrongdoing in mankind. One does not cancel the other.

Your summary of the National Anthem as a "knee-jerk" precription is sad. When there is nothing outside yourself to be respected or honored, you have pretty much lost everything.

Black Nat. Anthem
I believe that what our forfathers put into law should stay thios way instead of a judge or another race trying to change the American Way thats be before they were born or brought over to the US

arrogagance and deceit
The left has always said on thing then done another. So why do we fall for there lies. The have been destroying this country for years yet all I here is the word change we don't what e are asking for. Every dem, uses that word, I run at that word.

black national anthem

She was supposed to sing the National Anthem. She substituted her own song. Regardless of how she felt she did not do what she agreed to do. If she was paid for singing the National Anthem she should give the money back.

"Artists" can't go around doing as they please when they have agreed to do something else. That is dishonest and lying. There are not 2 ways about it.

She Needs to formally apologize to all she offended by the song she sang.

Changing the Words to our National Anthe
This is utterly disgusting! We are all 1 in this nation! I think the Negro people are all still whining about what they do and do not get! I think they are doing pretty good in this country! They are free now and they all need to step up to the plate! Get an education. Stop raising children without dads and get with it. Get some birth control. I think that she did this because Obama is running for President. I would never vote for him or Hillary. He says he is about Change, what change???? I love this country of mine and I will be fighting against political correct stuff in this country!! Let's get back to patriotism!!! Let's have Congress step up to the plate. After all we elect them to REPRESENT Us!! Vote them out people if they do not do what you want! Dont always bash the President! Its the Congress you want to bash! They are the ones that can do anything!! Do not forget 911!!!!

MRC
What exactly is a "white" agenda?
Where did you get any idea that Sen McCain supports a "white" agenda.
That would be as wrong as a "black" agenda.

Most of us--especially conservatives--would not vote for anything other than an "American" agenda.

Mr. "No-special interests" is really all about special interests, as is his party.

Policies and laws should be equally applicable to all. Not some. Anything that does otherwise is wrong. Not to mention unconstitutional.
You are WAY off base.

A Breech of Contract and Ignored
Why? White guilt.

If the singer were white and hired by Denver to sing the National Anthem and he came out singing "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by Boy George because he, as an artist, feels this way and wanted to express it--he would be sued and never get another job again.

Denver let this pass and condones this begrudgingly simply because she is black and singing a black anthem. She is untouchable and to go after her would incite race baiters and negative publicity that Denver is a racist community.

For her to sing what she clearly was not hired to sing, simply because she "felt this" is riduculous. She was never a slave, nor were her parents, nor were her grandparents, and doubtfully her great grandparents. She has a career in the music industry, she gets paid well, she lives in a free society, and she feels the need to sing that song?

She was race baiting, period. Did she win or didn't she? I think she would come out more the winner if Denver actually tried to sue her for breech of contract.

You will see more things like this to come, trust me.

Thumb in the eye
Singing the black national anthem when asked to sing the actual national anthem was clearly done to offend whites. This was not a Rosa Parks moment. Her action was meant to divide and was extremely disrepectful. I cannot see how any one could support her on this, unless they hate America. Again, another example of the victimhood mentality. Here she is singing for the Governor and this is how she shows appreciation for living in the greatest country in the history of mankind? This woman presumably sings in public other times so she has plenty of opportunity to get her message across. She sang that song at the wrong time in the wrong place. The sad thing now is she will be invited to all the talk shows like Oprah, The View, etc. She'll be applauded for being courageous. I haven't seen one black leader show any disappointment for what she did, so one would believe they approve. Where's Obama on this one? Where's the great uniter? One could also assume he approves of this. Is this the type of change we can all look forward to? Ten bucks says she's not voting for McCain.

More than what's there
Could it be possible that the comments being shared are personal thoughts on what was right or wrong with the compilation she gave? Why are we so quick to give our interpetation of what, why and how the song was sang? Why judge the intent? I loved the creativeness, but if she was not contracted to sing that song that way then don't hire her for anything else. Easy solve. Why put more into the matter than what's actually there?
God love you, and so do I.....stay blessed!

You ain't seen nothing yet...
If BHO manages to win this election it will indeed open up pandora's box fully. If you think the response by SOME blacks to the OJ verdict was outrageous, the BHO win will make that shameful incident look like a campfire compared to a volcano going off. Gnome Sane's comment "With the rise of Obama, Black separatists feel "empowered". They think it's "their moment"; not America's." is right on the money.

Fortunately the majority of Black Americans are respectful citizen's with character and feel about the country as strongly as any conservative.

This woman's behavior comes from lack of character which isn't a thing of color but is a lack of selfworth. One can only feel sorry for her and those like her.

Well..
..I'm a non-white 43 year old male, and I appreciate the singing of "Lift Evr'y Voice"...

...WHEN APPROPRIATE!

If someone asks you to sing the NATIONAL ANTHEM, that's the song you sing. If you don't want to do what you're asked, then don't do anything. Move on and let someone else sing the song. It's not that deep.

Love or lack thereof for my country is irrelevant.

Why would you put yourself out there as a subject of scorn over nothing? It's not like she was protesting some SPECIFIC injustice. If that were the case, if they so chose, no non-white performer would sing the National Anthem at all, much less usurp it by replacing it.

That's really the gist of it.

I see the Pro from Dover has arisen from the dung-heap to protest against yet another non-white person. The age of the rapscallion ensues..

Matthew
Your comments only illustrate what Mr. Prager outlined in his article.

Clearly you have no national pride. We should all 'cheer' for our country.

Shamelessness as Art
I’ve repeated this in several other posts, here and elsewhere. But, Ms. Marie’s delusion is the most definitive case, as Mr. has so eloquently delineated.

The Left and by extension the children of America rejoice in shamelessness as an art form.

Dissatisfaction
I strongly suggest that anyone and everyone who does not like living in this country, go somewhere else. Of course, once they get to whatever country they choose, they had better not express any dissatisfaction, lest they end up in gaol or worse.

Dennis, you forgot intentions!
Yes, it is true that the actual result of their actions is inconsequential. The mere fact that their "intentions" were honerable and noble (so they think/thought) alleviates any responsibility for the outcome.

I guess this may fall under the feelings category, but in my opine, I "feel" it is different enough to receive a mention.

Freedom of speech
The matter of Kimberly singing a different song than what she had agreed to is not a matter of freedome of speech, it is a matter of breaking a contract/agreement. If we all did that in our day to day living we would all be in a hell of a mess. How can she be so arrogant as to think that she is above all the rest of us and doesn't have to live up to what was requested of her and what she had agreed to. Also, why wasn't her mike cut off when they realized what she was doing? Someone needs to answer to that.Did the mayor apologize to his audience?

The lost country
This is very similar to the Olympic stunt by 2 American runners who protested by standing on the victory stand with 2 fisted black gloves raised and their heads lowered during the playing of the national anthem. They were sent home by the US Olympic committee. Now, they are going to be honored for their "bravery" during this years ESPY awards. I will not be watching.

Creative Spelling
It is no wonder that the Left thinks this is perfectly fine behavior:

1) They don't think America is worth honoring.

2) They who practice "creative spelling" and "Ebonics," and teach this to children, don't see any reason not to make up your own words, even at a dignified public event.

3) They think their "right" to do whatever they feel at the moment trumps anyone else's right to enjoy a corporate national ritual.

more revealing about Prager than Marie
Isn't it amazing the way that black people have divided this nation along racial lines. After all you would never have seen white people doing that (well except for that slavery thing, and the jim crow stuff that followed). What would possibly make black people in the 19th century think that they needed a unifying anthem.

This article is interesting because it gives an account of Marie's behavior which fits with Prager's ideas, but probably has little relation to her actual motivations.

Prager, of course, confuses not believing in an objective ethics with not believing in his take on objective ethics. There is nothing in Marie's quoted statements that does not suggest she did what she thought was objectively the right thing to do under the circumstances.

Obviously there are real differences in ethical thinking among conservatives and liberals (although somewhat statistically since not all conservatives have the same ethical values nor do all liberals) but Prager does not really understand what makes liberals tick. I somehow doubt he feels it is necessary to in order to make claims about how they feel.

Ebonics
I wonder if Obama will introduce a new form of Ebonics and call it Obamics?

Renee & Michelle Duet
Think of it Renee Marie & Mrs BO doing a duet of the black national anthem at the opening of the Dems convention in Denver.

Wasn't Michelle Robinson's entire Princeton thesis based on black graduates losing their black idendity by associating to much with whites? What better way to show solidary with a sista than to join her, with deep pride, in singing the black national anthem.

As other's have said maybe Mrs BO would then find it in her black heart to finally have one ounce of pride in being an American.

wbheff..
The jails are filled with all kinds of people of varying classifications here in the U.S. and abroad.

Some are even there unjustly.

I doubt this woman will ever get a chance to redeem herself, but if she does, I surely hope she does what she's asked to do - nothing more nothing less.

Immoral? Are These Lyrics Immoral?
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring.
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise,
High as the list'ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Why I could NEVER be in a public office
I would have started to belt out OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM, even if half the time I carry the tune in a bucket, badly sung with true feeling is not badly sung at all.

If I was the "paymaster" her check would have been reduced because she did not provide contracted services. Artistic interpretation has a place, Jimmi Hendrix's version is a classic, but what this gal did.

Sorry, if I was there it would have been a "scene." Actually, I am sorry I wasn't because someone with intestinal fortitude stood have stood up and said something!

Confucius says . . .
"If good does not accumulate, it is not enough to make a name for a man. If evil does not accumulate, it is not strong enough to destroy a man. Therefore the inferior man thinks to himself, 'Goodness in small things has no value,' and therefore neglects it. He thinks, 'Small sins do no harm,' and so does not give them up. Thus his sins accumulate until they can no longer be covered up, and his guilt becomes so great that it can no longer be wiped out."

Sadly for the psychological health of our country, as Dennis explained, the tendency of today’s liberalism is to produce artists who think and behave in the manner of the classical inferior man.

humilation
One poster suggest the woman sang the black version of the national anthem because she was humiliated as a child. Call in the psychologists! Hasn't every child been humilated at one time or another. Too fat? Too dumb? Too tall? Too short? Get over it lady, or we'll take back the Emancipation Proclamation
