Diversity 101: Five Easy Steps to Liberal Sensitivity

Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Students in university-run leadership positions are often required to participate in some type of diversity training because simply being a just and logical person is no longer enough to lead a group of people. Instead, one must be immersed in every type of culture, background, and lifestyle the Office of Diversity Programs and Services can comprehend. The Resident Advisor preparation I was given at George Mason University recently was no exception, and I have broken down GMU diversity indoctrination into five easy steps so that you, too, can become the sensitive person the Left wants you to be.

Step #1: “Examine and come to terms with your own personal prejudices.”

Feminist scholar Peggy McIntosh had no idea she was a bigot until she was forced to take an honest look at herself. In school, she received “no training in seeing [herself] as an oppressor, as an unfairly advantaged person, or as a participant in a damaged culture.” The diversity training team knows that you are probably guilty of similar charges, so before the training begins, you must first recognize yourself as the “participant in a damaged culture” that you truly are.

Step #2: “Take responsibility for addressing discrimination you encounter on campus.”

The second step is the Left’s subliminal way of reminding you that those truly needing diversity training (whites, specifically males) are at fault for the plights of women and minorities. Embrace the fact that discrimination is your fault and do something about it.

George Mason University, like many public universities, is an affirmative action institution, meaning they discriminate on the basis of race and/or gender when accepting and rejecting applicants for admission. Although this obvious bigotry exists in the admissions process, I have an inkling this is not what the trainers meant when they ask you to “[address] discrimination you encounter on campus.”

Step #3: “Get involved in activities and events sponsored by different groups…[or] enroll in a semester-long cultural diversity course or workshop, or a course about a culture different from your own.”

In the third step, you must begin to immerse yourself into various cultures in order to grasp how truly difficult it is for such groups to exist in our society. You must delve deeply into the immersion process by formally educating yourself about diverse cultures. Unless you want to learn about white people, George Mason provides its students with a wide variety of programs, including: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month; Black History Month; Safe zone training to become an “ally” to the members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Community; Hispanic Heritage Month; and American Indian Heritage Week. Participating in these events is the best way to truly experience the difficult lives of minorities. After all, nothing says oppression like a Pow-Wow!

Step #4: “Make a sincere effort to establish a meaningful relationship with a student of a different ethnic or cultural background or lifestyle.”

In the fourth step you are to personalize your newfound sensitivity by using discriminatory practices to find a culturally different “friend.” Long gone are the days of freely associating with people because you like them or have something in common with them. Now you must create bonds with people for the purpose of easing your guilt for the inherent bigotry you never knew you had. Once you have done this, you can breathe easy knowing you have taken a poor, friendless minority under your wing.

Step #5: “Learn to overcome the tendency to stereotype members of various groups, and instead, try to develop a sensitivity to their feelings and experiences.”

Step five can be rather difficult because, after four steps of forcing yourself to become aware of cultural differences, you are now expected to ignore all of that and pretend these differences do not exist. But don’t worry; you’ve reached the end of your journey of diversity ignorance recovery! You can now take the knowledge you have acquired and be a true advocate for these poor, underrepresented groups. Can’t you feel your heart bleeding already?

Why do we put up with it?
Why do we put up with this sort of thing?

When private colleges do it, we can just, like, not attend them. Seems as though some more schools would see a potential market in proclaiming themselves "non-politically-correct" zones & eschewing this nonsense. Particularly scrutinize what is required of one as a condition of enrolling. Once the tuition is paid, a contract has been created, which the school might arguably breach by harassment or imposing bogus sanctions. Shy away from schools that try to make a prospective student sign away all rights to seek justice in real courts of law.

With publicly supported schools, other options exist. One's legislators might take an interest in what they're funding from taxes if it is brought to their attention. Trustees might also be open to concerns by parents & the public.

Then there are alumni & other donors who might be less generous & uncritical if they realize they're enabling that kind of thing.

Spinelss presidents & wobbly boards & faculty senates might think twice if the usual leftist faculty & pressure groups to which they pander were countered by concerned legislators & donors!

Then there are resources like FIRE to go to bat for bullied students.

Of course if we had conservatives in control of Congress, they could pull the plug on this kind of thing with a "Title 9" for freedom of thought on campus. Any institution receiving $1 from the federal government, even thru 1 student's assisted tuition, is strictly forbidden to discriminate against ANY student, including white Anglo-saxons & males. The again conservatives would probably see that the federal government has no business financing colleges anyway.

Speaking of being petty...

As far as Lilly goes, it's pretty obvious that she hates fat people. Why the hating Lilly?

Typical liberal. Lose the argument, go to the insults.

Ignore lilly
Please Townhall, I beg of you! An ignore option would be used by many who post and by those that lurk. If those trolling for just a reaction were ignored, they would go away. It works on much larger forums. My regular forum has 70,000 members, the other has over 3.5 million posts to date. It works. Give it a try. My last good nerve is about to go.

CalVRWC
I briefly dated a guy who was the son of a well-to-do lawyer from near DC. Though I'd met other Jewish people before to a person of my blue-collar background we had some significant cultural differences.

But since we were both white I suppose it doesn't count.

But one of my best friends was half Japanese and half Swiss. But I didn't need a diversity program to find her -- we played D&D under the same dungeon master.

Consider Step 4
“Make a sincere effort to establish a meaningful relationship with a student of a different ethnic or cultural background or lifestyle.”

This would be the perfect time to get to know the hot Asian chick in your math class; the zesty Latina chick getting in-state tuition; the hot Indian chick in your health class; the hot black chick in your physical education (gym) class; or the hot Native American chick in your history class.

Although I don't think that was the intent of step 4.

Excuse Lilly
I think she's drunk.

Audi,
I'm unashamedly Nascar myself, but I would have expected a relative of yours to say "Grand Am" or "Le Mans" -- though perhaps that would have been considered dangerously elitist and marked her out for extra indoctrination sessions. ;-) :-D LOL

cleverness_of_me
Yes.

The idea is that the authors' words can carry the authors' messages directly to the readers' hearts and minds without need of an interpreter because the important elements of the human experience -- love, hate, friendship, family, sacrifice, selfishness, temptation, accomplishment, and so on -- are universal.

Permitting the students to interact directly with the author through the medium of the characters and plot adds a new dimension to the immersion in another's culture and experience.

Students reading in this exciting, new manner have been known to become so deeply involved in this character/story/author interaction that they exhibit a dramatic startle effect, jumping and crying out, when a sudden noise breaks their concentration.

It presents a whole, new realm of possibility in the realm of literature.

;-)

Yes Phil
"You get the idea..."

It's called bizarro-world.

we can stop this!
After 40 + years of having such equality bilge forced on us, at last many Americans are finding the nerve to publicly question wasteful and pointless race propaganda!

Diversity = Destruction

The Sixties Are So Over
I ran into this [bleep] in 1966 when I was a Freshman in a small liberal arts church-related college in Tennessee, where Mama sent me so I would not be blown to bits when the Atom Bomb hit New York City. (Oddly enough, this school was 85% New York and New Jersey students. Lots of paranoid Mamas out there.) I was the only Republican in a class of 125 Freshmen. I was also the only one, apparently, whose Daddy wanted to see my research when I said "It will be a nice day tomorrow." I looked on myself as a kind of Errol Flynn, relished the challenge, may have convinced a few people of the error of their ways, and learned a lot about debate. However, that was in days gone by when "You suck!" was not considered a stinging riposte but evidence of a lack of research.

Recently my niece (age 17) had a form to fill out and she too did not know what to put in the blank marked "Race." After my sister finished laughing, she told her to write "NA$CAR."

Mother of 4
Reading for enjoyment, without deconstruction? What a concept!

Blonde hair and blue eyes
When my little sister was about 6 she came home from school crying after they had a discussion about racial diversity. You see, she was the only one in the class who had blond hair and blue eyes, and diversity training doesn't know how to cope with that. So she felt centered out and humiliated.

But she is white, and therefore cannot be the victim of racism or bigotry, according to liberals.

But a little while ago we had a conversation about race, because she was confused about the news, so I had to explain racism to her (she is 10 now). When I explained that some people hate other people because of their skin color her response was: "the first time I saw black kids I wondered if there was something different about them, but after I played with them I found out there wasn't".

Get it? It is normal to wonder about people that appear to be different, but it doesn't have to go farther than that. There is nothing different about people of other races. It is an illusion.

Lilly Dear,
Assuming that there is some value to immersing oneself in another culture, please explain why minority students should be discriminated against by limiting this advantage to whites only?

On overnight reflection I believe that advanced work in Middle Class Studies/Rural White Studies should include:

Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping: The History and Culture of Sustainable Wildlife Management

Refuse to Be a Victim: Personal Security, Self-Defense, and Concealed Carry as a Means of Empowering the Defenseless

Western Literature Reconstructed, Reading and Discussion (Ranging from Little Women to Moby Dick, Shakespeare to Asimov, Aesops Fables to Lord Peter mysteries, this course focuses on reading for enjoyment and cultural literacy. Deconstruction theory and academic literary criticism will NOT be permitted).

Debate Skills: Using Supporting Evidence and Logic to Persuade Others (Yes! Its OK to believe that your ideas are superior to others' ideas).

And finally, Dream Big But Start Small! The Art of Pursuing One's Goals Through Hard Work and Persistent Effort.

The high of liberal debating skills
Miss Cordova writes a thoughtful column exposing attempts by "educators" to instill racial guilt and animus in our young people.

Lilly's response: "you're fat".

Akagi and lilly
Akagi- very well said. Do you live in the US or just visit?
lilly- I understand the point you were trying to make. It was done very poorly. You came across as extremely mean-spirited and perpetuating the view that libs only want free speech as long as it agrees with them.

LEFTIST RE-EDUCATION CAMPS
AKAGI, nailed it brilliantly. These are Leftist re-education camps. They can't change the society via the polls, so they use the courts and the schools. Stalin said 'give me your children in school and I will have them for life.'

Akagi writes: Tuesday, March, 18, 2008 5:41 PM

In China there were places like this too..but they were called re-education camps--the Americans are not as honest as Maoists. Call them what they are...re-education courses (camps, programs, whatever).

If I had to take one of those classes, I'd dress like a red Guard and buy a little red notebook and write down various sayings the "trainer" said and later start chanting these back during class as a true indoctrinated cadre of the revolution.

lilly
Wow--those lib diversity classes sure worked on you!!! You get an A for true "sensitivity" as difined by the left re-education facilities. Unfortunately you get an F for logic, reality, and basic human kindness.

Wow. I was always wondering why people thought
liberalism was so evil. Now I have seen the light.

Really, our nation is falling apart and you
decide to write about how petty it is to be
sensitive to others.

Try something with depth next time.

lilly: Really?
"So there she was in diversity sensitivity class, having for once to perceive others, not herself, as victim. Must have been hard to take. Is this article her revenge?"

Really? Typical liberal fascist invalidation technique: don't address the substance of the argument. Instead, invalidate an argument that counters your own ideology by attacking the individual making said argument by impugning their physical person or character, i.e., innuendo regarding ulterior motives (e.g., a "fat", unpopular girl’s revenge) for making disagreeable anti-PC arguments.

Apply this same argument to your posts: tell me, as a public educator, how many young lives have you destroyed w/ your mediocre intellect & your slavish devotion to the “white society in general & white men in particular are evil” mode of thinking over the years? Are your pedantic posts just a form of revenge against all the big, bad white MEN who have never taken you seriously your entire life?

Akagi: LOL
Wow. I was always wondering why people thought

LOL. Bravo!!

I underwent diversity training. The only thing I remember was a question: What is the difference between St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo? On St. Patrick's day everyone wants to be Irish. Is that diverse enough for the trolls?

She Doesn't Get It...........
Lilly ~ Wow.....you can tell all of that from a picture?! You're amazing! You totally missed the whole point of the article. Maybe it's the chip on your shoulder, or you are "oppressed", I don't know, but the whole point was that we should treat people well and choose who we want to be friends with based on who they are as people, REGARDLESS of their race/creed/color and yes, their weight. If someone has to be "taught" how to be decent to another human being then I think "sensitivity training" is the least of their problems. I don't believe Ms. Cordova's article attacked anyone personally, unlike you. You certainly must feel so much better about yourself after unleashing that personal attack on her so good for you!

Edumacation
oldsocialworker says: "No trotting out the retarded for resume enhancement posing as voluteerism, and no apoplectic demands for social engineering."

You hit the nail on the head! There is an alarming trend in business schools to expect "community involvement" from applicants, and less job success. They are also establishing an academic infrastructure from which to send perfectly capable graduates out into the world to do $30,000-a-year nonprofit work (for which their student loans will be forgiven), or to loot from their company to create "green" programs or other such nonsense. I'm sorry, I believe the term they use is "sustainability." This is done in the name of "corporate social responsibility."

I don't know from where they think they are going to get tuition money in the future, since everyone is out doing charity work and no one is actually doing business to create wealth.

If that isn't the pot calling the kettle
black!!

Lilly, of all people, telling someone else they have a victim mentality.

The Victim Mentality
So, Ms Cordova, when she was being hired as an RA, was required to attend a diversity sensitivity class. This requirement seems to have offended her. I notice from her photograph that she appears to be about 100 lb overweight. Of course, that wouldn't be due to her dietary or exercise habits. Doubtless her obesity is caused by "glands" or "heredity" or she "is just big-boned". Not her fault. She's just a victim of circumstance. Also, she's probably the frequent victim of the fashion industry and Fat Girl jokes. So there she was in diversity sensitivity class, having for once to perceive others, not herself, as victim. Must have been hard to take. Is this article her revenge?

Cleverness of me . . .
"So watch out for the smear tactics of the radical left, the do not require facts."

I'd say watch out for the smear tactics of the ENTIRE Left, because they are freakin' insane nutcases.

cleverness
I was told that I "may not belong in the field" when I told a "professor" that my student internship placement (when I was in college) had no clients to work with ( it didn't) and I was worried that the "agency" was poorly run. Well, it was, and it shut down about a year later. I attended to Seton Hall University and the placement was in Newark, NJ. in 1982. I wasn't "excused" from the social work program because my cafe au lait- freckled biracial pigmentation served as a bit of a pass; of that I am now convinced.

Junior High Diversity...

My daughters mostly poor Junior High resembles the United Nations. White, Black, Arab, Latino, Indian, Hmong, Laotion... you name it.

These poor kids do everything together: Birthday Parties, Skating, Sleepovers, "going-out", Movies, they even Vacation together at times.

The problem is... They do not have any diversity training!!!

What is going on! How can Liberals allow these kids to grow up not knowing they're supposed to be oppressing one another??

It is so Bad....

My daughter didn't know how to answer a question on a simple school form!

She had no idea she was "White"?

AZPhil
Great list- add this:

Young soldiers are exploited American "children", but young hookers are " consentingadults making personal choices".

After you puke
Encourage the "professors" to mingle with the maintenance staff and boldly forge new friendships. Yeah- that'll happen.

My daughter is looking at colleges in England becaus they are 1/3 the cost and the requirements for admission are high SAT/ACT test scores and good grades- period. No trotting out the retarded for resume enhancement posing as voluteerism, and no apoplectic demands for social engineering.

what a boring,
stale and sterile environment libs try to create.

The Diversity Industry
Shakedowns and mau-mauing have morphed into diversity training. Lots of money involved. George Mason probably contracts out this crap to well paid poverty pimps.

viruddh
The fact you see nothing wrong in all of this tells us all we need to know about you. The patients in the mental hospital all appear perfectly normal...to each other.

Down with cow-ghosts and snake spirits
GreenHornet:

"dadao yiqie niugui sheshen"

Down with Cow-ghosts and snake-spirits...or in today's terms..down with racists and Republicans.

The above term was a frequent chant during the Cultural Revolution. Then the term was meant to describe landlords, rich peasants, counter revolutionaries, rightists, and others that had not learned how to think correct political thoughts and put them into action. So today, in America's re-education camps it will be against "racists (anyone who say anything about a minority on the left)", Republicans, conservatives, those who think global warming is a fraud, people who value personal property and freedoms and value the right to associate and not associate with whom we want, etc.

Wow
Just wow.

Let's see if I got this straight. Take someone with no prejudice or bigotry, instill it in them, then push the guilt trips.

Stupididy, bigotry, intollerance, and bigotry all in one package. How very efficient of these universaties.

Oh, and viruddh, same.

"The Immigrant Experience"
When I was in college I took and "English" course called "The Immigrant Experience". I am fairly liberal when it comes to (legal) immigration, and thought it would be interesting.

Then word got back to me (through my then-girlfriend) that there were rumors that I was a racist, because I challenged the professor's assertion that only whites can be racist, refused to recognize those in this country illegally as true "immigrants", and wrote a paper condemning the (Polish) professor for being unfairly critical of British immigrants. My ideas about race being an illusion to be ignored were also considered racist, but I'm not sure why.

So watch out for the smear tactics of the radical left, the do not require facts.

Great Article!
I attended college in the late 80's and I came away from it convinced our country (if it continues down this politically correct /leftist path) will indeed end up in total destruction. After reading this article, I have to say I'm not surprised by what is going on now, its even worse than it was when I was in school. The liberals that run these institutions are clearly trying to brainwash kids. They aren't even trying to be that subtle about it. I'm just hoping there are enough kids, from good upbringing, raised to know both sides of the story. Liberalism is all about controlling people...controlling every aspect of their lives. I feel for kids that are surrounded by this garbage 24/7 and are never exposed to common sense conservatism at all. It seems those are the types that eventually get jobs at MSNBC, CNN, NPR, CBS, PBS, ABC, NBC, etc etc

Alyssa - good column
I will tell you what I told my two beautiful and well adjusted Daughters.

Liberals make reality comform to their minds sane people make their minds conform to reality. Reality is engimatic to liberals. Your values and character will trump liberal nonsense every time. Don't be ashamed of being a thinking woman who values her role in life. Your femininity is not a curse but an asset.

What is next from liberal educators (oxymoron?) A course on feminine self-esteem by listening to 'Gansta Rap'?

My beautiful bride of 42 years - who happens to be my best friend - drove me to the emergency room of a local hospital one weekend when one of my teeth abscessed. The Doctor was a young woman who began asking me questions. I responded to one of her comments with 'yes ma'am' she threw her clipboard to the floor and berated me for not calling her Doctor. I was at a loss for words because my Father had raised his sons that the unpardonable sin within the family was to disrespect our mother. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed my wife was fuming and was visibly shaken. I leaned over and said are you okay - she whispered in my ear "I've got a title for her" - I can only guess what it was - but I know it wasn't good.

Ms. Cordova

When you break it down
like this you can seen liberal tolerance-conformism for the power play that it is.

It would be fascinating to do an histroical analysis to see how the hippies' insistence on (often theoretical) radical individualism became the group-think of diversity training. Maybe Mr Horowitz could help us with that.

But I had powerful experience of the oppressive nature of this ideology 25 years ago at Sydney University, in a philosophy department dominated by feminism, as the younger more aggressive force amongst the depoliticized Derrideans, the confused Foucauldians and the played-out marxists. Who had the guts to be a (white male middle class) individual when the femo-nazis controlled the agenda?

How is Kato?

Akagi
My friend, I don't often agree with what you write in these discussions (I have gritted my teeth at some of them), but you are obviously inteligent and I have mentaly applauded you in several cases. Your 5:41 PM post is one of those times.

Awesome column
Alyssa Cordova rocks! What a great column. Glad we have courageous students like her speaking out against the CROCK of S. that comprises "higher education." I thought that GMU was above this garbage, but apparently not. So glad I left the university. Such sleazy faculty (with exceptions), absurd crazy ideas not worth a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. (piled hip deep in it). Smart lady, get OUT of "formal education" asap and learn how the rest of the world works. These diversity leadership people s-u-c-k, and probably couldn't add 2 + 2 if their lives depended on it.

Thanks for standing up for truth. Hope you don't receive any blowback.

It's Good Business!
Like the old saying: "If there is no market for your product, CREATE ONE!"

Unfortunatly, the "product" in this case is BIGOTRY. Let's face facts, the "diversity training" that is shoved down many unsuspecting peoples' throats is flat out bigotry.

Alyssa Part 2
6) Find rights in the Constitution that no one else can find (like privacy) while failing to see the ones written in black and white (see the 2nd Amendment).

7) Never hold liberals accountable. Whether they lie, cheat, steal, run the local Klan chapter, or leave someone underwater to die, elect, and re-elect, them to public office indefinitely.

8) Have two standards defining what "greed" is. If CEOs make millions, they are greedy. If liberal actors make millions pretending to be someone else, that's just the fair market at work. If gas costs $3 a gallon, that's pure greed. If movie tickets cost $9 each, again, the fair market at work.

9) Complain about imaginary problems while ignoring real ones (this is an offshoot of #2). Call any Republican president "Hitler", or a fascist, or stupid and claim he's trampling on civil rights while the media lampoon him daily. Then, praise Castro and Chavez, who actually do respond to political enemies with imprisonment, torture, and death.

10) Praise the ignorant while condemning the educated. Bush, who went to Harvard and Yale, is stupid. Sean Penn, who couldn't finish college (or maybe high school), is brilliant.

You get the idea...

Alyssa
You forgot a few chapters in "being a good liberal". To wit:

1) Apologize for things you didn't do (See Clinton apologizing for slavery) and do not apologize for things you are responsible for (adultery, selling military secrets to China, not capturing bin Laden, pardoning Marc Rich for money, suborning perjury, giving nuclear reactors to North Korea, sending American troops to Bosnia for no reason, etc, etc, etc).

2) Address imaginary issues (global warming) and ignore real ones (muslim terrorism).

3) Equate "feeling" with "helping". Just because conservatives contribute more to charity means nothing; they don't "feel" as bad as you do.

4) Do as I say, not as I do.

5) Cry over the executions of mass murderers while fighting for everyone's right to kill fetuses.

To be continued...

Long ago

Huh?
Huh?

What's wrong with just getting an education in the subjects that you choose as your major and your minor?

But, if you HAVE to have diversity training, where are the opportunities for those minorities to "immerse themselves" in the culture of the white, middle class, the conservative evangelical, or the dreaded rural southerner?

Lets make it a weekend thing. Start them at the local shooting club for an NRA approved, introductory course in gun safety followed by an hour or two on the range so that they can experience shooting rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

Saturday afternoon could be spent with community partners as they do chores around the house, yard work, gardening, or just messing around with their boats/cars/whathaveyou.

After dinner it would be off to either the local short track or minor-league ballpark according to local availability/personal preference.

Sunday begins at a local church with a nice session of Sunday School followed by services in the traditional style.

After that its back to the community partners' homes to watch the Nascar race and then back to church for a pot-luck dinner and a rousing, modern-style, "praise and worship" service.

This taste of a foreign culture might even inspire some students to enroll in a full course of "Middle-Class Studies" or "Evangelical and Rural Studies". The syllabus for such courses would undoubtedly contain a survey course of the Bible, basic home improvement skills, cooking without a microwave, Nascar 101, and Gardening Basics.

The labwork for these course would be the hard part -- getting and holding an entry-level, work-with-your-hands job. Food services or construction trades preferred and extra credit for farm work.

My Heart Goes OutTo You
Rotten situation...at least from Herndon, you can scream your lungs out in the Blue Ridge Mountains on weekends!

I'd like to hear about what happens to folks on campus who refuse to submit to this nonsense - nothing aggressive, just folks who say, "no thanks, I'm fine with who I am and like folks for who they are." Kafkaesque, or just ostracized (I graduated too early to have the experience...)?

Sounds familiar
So, first you have to explore every aspect of your secret failures (real or imagined) and then be indoctrinated into a new way of thinking by people who made you believe something was wrong with you in the first place...

The only difference between what I just said and Scientology is that Scientologists may blackmail you with that information about your "audit", whereas diversity trainers just assume you are guilty based on your race and gender and attempt to push you into doing things and believing things on that basis alone.
