A Glimpse into the Past
Posted by: John Campbell at 11:37 AM

You may or may not know why this blog is titled the Greeneyeshade Blog.   I am a CPA by training, a self-professed bean-counter.  I also sit on 3 of Committees available to Members of the House that hold jurisdiction over areas of federal economic policy, budgeting, and economic analysis.  I feel it is particularly instructive that we take a look at some history…because after all, the numbers don’t lie.

- In February 2009, Democrats enacted a debt increase, with the premise and promise that by borrowing another trillion dollars would create jobs for more Americans and that it would happen immediately, thereby thwarting the unemployment rate from rising above 8%...we are now at 10.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is a 26 year high.

- Since taking control of Congress in January of 2007, Democrats have presided over a 39% increase in the nation’s debt from $8.670 trillion to $12.039 trillion.

- According to the President’s budget, the national debt will soar from $9.961 trillion at the start of 2009 to more than $24.4 trillion in 2019…that’s an increase of 144%.

"Healthier" Not To Own A Gun? Uncle Sam Might Think So
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 10:36 AM
Incentives for not owning firearms aren't explicitly laid out in the health reform mandates that passed the House or Senate, but they're not explicitly prohibited, either. That made the Virginia-based Gun Owners of Americaa little concerned, sending out a notice to its members saying that premiums for gun owners could potentially be higher than premiums for non gun-owners, if the "rabidly anti-gun Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius" felt that not owning a gun was somehow healthier.

Afghanistan Standoff: Inside the December Issue of Townhall Magazine
Posted by: Chris Field at 10:14 AM
Two men are in showdown over how the U.S. military should move forward in Afghanistan.

One is a highly decorated Army general who has experienced the war first hand and is directly responsible for leading the men and women on the ground against al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The other is other is a community-organizer-turned-president whose party’s left-wing base actually roots for America’s defeat.

So, who do you trust to win this war—the general who knows what he needs or the liberal politician who knows he needs to placate his peacenik base?

Townhall Magazine digs into where we are in Afghanistan, how we got there and what we need to do next. Gen. Stanley McChrystal has a plan, but no one knows if President Obama will take his advice, shortchange our troops or continue to dither while our bravest are in harm’s way.

If you want to know what it will take to win, the December issue is for you. Not a subscriber? Fix that problem here, and get up-to-speed on our War on Terror.

And it doesn’t stop with the war in Afghanistan. The policies of this administration are leading us down a path of security and fiscal weakness.

With the president’s decision to scrap missile defense in Eastern Europe, he has shown a frightening willingness to sacrifice our national well-being and to betray our allies. We give you the latest in Townhall Magazine.

On the fiscal front, this government’s policies are going to require a decision—sooner rather than later—on our taxes and freedoms. We have it all covered.

And while average Americans are hurting in this economy—which the president himself warned could see a “double-dip recession”—the Obama White House is riding to the rescue of its Wall Street buddies.

Of course, the administration needs a message machine to help make this all possible. Townhall Magazine exposes that machine—Organizing for America—for what it is: a cult-like DNC-based group of Obama sycophants.

Also, just in time for the holidays, the fight over our religious symbols is rearing its ugly head. Yes, the War on Christmas continues.

Plus, in an exclusive interview with Townhall Magazine, Santa Claus lets slip what Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can be expecting this Christmas.

If you order today, we will give you a FREE COPY of Sarah Palin’s explosive best seller, “Going Rogue.”

Afghanistan is at a tipping point, but the Obama administration is dithering while American troops wait for backup. How did we get to this point? Where to do we go from here?

With great reporting and analysis from Bill Roggio and powerful photography selected by our team, you’ll get the full story of what’s happening in Afghanistan, what our options are and what the president must to in order to win—if that is, indeed, his goal.

From the opening of Roggio’s “No Time for Weakness”:
Three months after declaring Afghanistan a “war of necessity” and 10 months after launching the then-highly touted “AfPak” strategy, President Obama has come full circle and is now re-evaluating U.S. policy on Afghanistan.

Back on Aug. 17, during a speech given to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Obama laid out the case for a vigorous effort in Afghanistan. He indicated that al Qaeda, and the Taliban who harbor them, are a vital threat to U.S. national security.

“Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again,” Obama said. “If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting; this is fundamental to the defense of our people.”

Today, the administration seems unsure whether the Taliban are even a threat, and some advisors are implausibly arguing that even if the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, the Taliban would not welcome al Qaeda there.

As Obama contemplates the path forward in—or out of—Afghanistan, the harsh reality is that the security and political situation is nearing its nadir. Seven years after being driven from power, Mullah Omar’s Taliban have clearly regained the initiative. But regardless of U.S. and NATO setbacks in Afghanistan, the United States has a vital national security interest there. A reinvigorated Taliban in Afghanistan would threaten neighboring countries in central Asia and lead to the further destabilization of nuclear-armed Pakistan, which is battling its own mounting Taliban insurgency. And the abandonment of the Afghan people to the brutal predations of the Taliban would tarnish the United States’ reputation in the Muslim world and beyond.

Townhall contributor Peter Brookes, in “Another Foreign-Policy Fumble,” explains that President Obama’s decision to abandon Bush’s Eastern European missile defense plan discourages friends, encourages foes—and leaves our homeland vulnerable.
In another stroke of foreign policy “genius,” in September the Obama administration unceremoniously threw the proposed George W. Bushera, Eastern European-based U.S. missile defense system under the bus.

Not only was it a sop to the Russians and to the Lefties here at home (who are increasingly disenchanted with the White House), but more importantly, it will render us increasingly vulnerable to the growing Iranian nuclear weapon and ballistic-missile threat.

While spinning the decision madly so as to not look weak on national security, in the end, it amounts to another Obama foreign-policy fumble in its Pollyanna-ish effort to make everything right with the world—despite American interests.

***

The policies of the Obama administration and America’s liberals are quickly leading to a major fork in the road for this country. As explained in “More Taxes? Fork It Over,” if we take the Left path, we will see hither taxes, bigger government and less freedom. But there is an alternative—and a real hope that we’ll make the Right decision.

A new book from Washington Examiner columnist Timothy Carney exposes how the Obama White House is riding to Wall Street’s rescue. Townhall Magazine has an exclusive excerpt: “Barack O’Bailout.”
Barack Obama was not the original author of the Great Wall Street Bailout of 2008. But he carried it across the goal line when he—perhaps alone—was in position to block it.

Later, when Obama became president, he brought with him one of the chief authors of the bailouts, Tim Geithner. Obama also reappointed the captain of the bailout ship, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. And one of the bailout innovators of the last 25 years, Larry Summers, sits in the West Wing.

Unsurprisingly, Obama’s team rolled out new bailouts in 2009, and its financial “reforms” would institutionalize them. Obama, undeniably, is a Bailout President. Even aside from the bailouts, Obama is cozy with Wall Street.

He packed his administration with Goldman Sachs alumni, and he received more campaign cash from the finance industry than any politician in history.

In supporting Obama, the industry is acting out of normal self-interest: it knows his plans to heavily regulate Wall Street would actually end up helping the fat cats of Big Finance.

Obama is a president from Wall Street, and Obamanomics is good news for Wall Street. On this score, at least, it’s hard to see how, compared to Bush, Obama represents Change.

Frequent Townhall contributor Matthew Vadum takes a close look at Organizing for America with his feature report “Organizing for Socialism.”

Housed at the Democratic National Committee, the sycophantic OFA is doing everything it can to milk the cult of personality Barack Obama created during the 2008 campaign. Is it really political activism—or a massive ego trip?

Is Medicare 'Too Big to Fail'?
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 10:01 AM
Guest post from Americans for Prosperity

During the financial disaster on Wall Street a year ago, politicians, economists, and pundits became obsessed with the term “moral hazard,” which occurs when a person, corporation, or other entity makes riskier choices because the consequences have been artificially manipulated. The Wall Street bailout created a moral hazard because it shielded financial institutions from the consequences of their actions. If a corporation knows it would be rescued by the government after making bad decisions, it has fewer incentives to change behavior or learn from mistakes.

The government takeover of the health care industry will institutionalize moral hazards as “too big to fail” could become a registered trademark. Before government mandates that its citizens buy insurance and expands coverage to millions, we should consider the current outlook of health care spending for the American taxpayer.

Let’s start by looking at Medicare in 1966, when costs were around $3 billion and projected to reach $12 billion (allowing for inflation) by 1990, according to the House Ways and Means Committee at the time. However, the actual cost by the projected date was $107 billion, almost nine times the original estimate. In 2008, Medicare’s cost grew to almost $450 billion.

These figures are striking, but only tell part of the story.

Last year’s figures still count baby boomers among those paying into the system. Once this enormous sector of the population begins to retire, there will be a dramatic shift from taxpayers to tax-consumers. The original plan was based on a substantial sector of the population paying into the system. Yet birth rates have never caught up to the historic numbers of the post-World War II generation. This is the Medicare financial disaster that has been predicted for decades. However, due to the political suicide of addressing an issue that affects the country’s largest voting block, the answer has been to wait for another Congress or another administration to handle the problem.

Why should the American people believe that universal health care will be any different? In order for this new system to survive, it will depend on two things: how much funding it can raise through taxes and how many loans it can muster despite a growing federal deficit.

For more on the health reform burdens being placed on the youth, see Robert J. Samuelson’s column in yesterday’s Washington Post.

Re: Talk About "Inconvenient" Fiscal Truths!
Posted by: John Hanlon at 11:21 PM
Carol, to follow up on your piece about David Broder's article about health care reform, it was interesting to see the reaction from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to Broder's criticism.

The Huffington Post recently featured an article with the video of Senator Reid on the Senate floor responding to Broder and referring to him as a retired man who "writes a column every once in a while." In that video, Reid went on to argue that we need a debate about health care. It is ironic for Reid to simply write off a critical article about health care reform and then call for a debate on that very subject. If he really wanted a debate, shouldn't he challenge Broder's analysis on the subject rather than Broder himself?

Plus, to add to this fact, Democrats have had a hard time selling health care reform to senior citizens. With that in mind, it is funny that Reid would use this opportunity in the spotlight to call Broder a retiree as if that is a bad thing or to make it seem like retired people should have less of a say in the debate than other people, who would be less affected by this debate.

Reid's criticism of Broder on the floor is another reminder of why people should work against Reid's re-election next year. Reid may say he wants to have a debate but he does not seem to want to respond to criticisms of his policies. One day, perhaps soon, Reid may be voted out of office and become a retired politician who, if lucky, is given the chance to write a column "every once in a while" but then, according to Reid, we shouldn't focus on it.

ClimateGate Heats Up Global Warming Debate before Copenhagen
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 5:27 PM
Guest post from Nick Loris with the Heritage Foundation

1,000 emails and more than 3,000 other documents from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University in the United Kingdom publicly revealed by a hacker, or allegedly an inside whistleblower, are rekindling the flame to the global warming debate just weeks before the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference where the United States will propose an emissions reduction target. A sample of what the emails exposed, which date back 13 years, includes:

“The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.”

And:

“I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”

And:

“I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report,” Jones writes. “Kevin and I will keep them out somehow — even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!”

Some have argued the quotes have been taken out of context while others say the context is clear as day. Other information was erased completely to prevent it from being obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. And others believe “that this is not a scandal so much as a window on real scientists working on a politicized issue.”

The Borrow and Spend Runaround
Posted by: John Campbell at 4:48 PM

“It is important though to recognize if we keep on adding to the debt, even in the midst of this recovery, that at some point, people could lose confidence in the U.S. economy in a way that could actually lead to a double-dip recession.”

President Barack Obama, November 18, 2009

Recently, the White House indicated that it has plans to raise the national debt limit as part of a larger upcoming piece of legislation.  What this means is that the United States Government has run out of its statutory borrowing authority…just like the credit card you have in your wallet or purse…there is a limit on what one can spend.

This is the second time in 2009 that the debt limit has been increased.

Here is a brief situation report of our economy right now:

  • - The national debt has increased to $12.039 trillion or 85 % of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  • - The debt limit was raised from $11.315 trillion to $12.104 when Speaker Pelosi and President Obama passed their ‘non-stimulating’ stimulus bill, nine months ago.
  • - The government is now roughly $70 billion away from reaching the current limit.
  • - The White House is now seeking a debt limit increase of at least $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion—increasing the limit to anywhere from $13.1 trillion to $13.6 trillion.

I will have more on this and a historical glimpse in the past tomorrow.

Ever Seen a Check for $9 Billion?
Posted by: Kevin Glass at 3:03 PM
Barack Obama has been in China recently, spurring discussion on how much the U.S. is in debt to the Chinese. But more than China owns U.S. debt; check out the check made out to Morgan Stanley from Japanese company Mitsubishi UFJ:

In case you can't make it out, that's 9,000,000,000.00. "Perhaps the largest check ever written," according to Wall Street watcher Aaron Ross Sorkin.

ObamaCare Support Plunges to New Low
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 12:23 PM
Just days after the Senate voted to open the debate on Obama's health care overhaul plan, public support for the president's plan has taken a dive to its lowest level.  According to the latest poll from Rasmussen, only 38% of likely voters support the presidents plan, compared to 56% who oppose the measure.
Half the survey was conducted before the Senate voted late Saturday to begin debate on its version of the legislation. Support for the plan was slightly lower in the half of the survey conducted after the Senate vote.

Prior to this, support for the plan had never fallen below 41%. Last week, support for the plan was at 47%. Two weeks ago, the effort was supported by 45% of voters.

Ed Morrissey also points out that the spread of opposition vs. support has drastically changed in recent weeks:

The spread against ObamaCare jumped significantly in the last week, as Harry Reid prepared his version for the Senate. It went from -2%, within the margin of error, to -18%, the largest gap between supporters and opponents.  The previous high had been 15 points at the end of September, with opposition peaked at the current 56%.  The new gap suggests that more core supporters have begun to fall by the wayside.

The big takeaway from the internals is, as always, independent voters.  They are looking a lot more like Republicans on this issue.  Where Republican voters oppose ObamaCare 83/13, independents aren’t far behind at 70/23.  Self-described moderates have fled as well, opposing ObamaCare by almost exactly the overall topline, 55/39.

Re: McCain Tells Sr. Citizens To Cut Up Their AARP Cards
Posted by: Townhall.com Staff at 12:02 PM
Why should you cut up your AARP card? Because the organization has advocated, among other things, egregious subsidizing of older Americans' health care by younger Americans. No wonder the AARP is a major player in the reform debate. Here's the WaPo:
[The current reform package] mandates that health insurance premiums for older Americans be no more than twice the level of that for younger Americans. That's much less than the actual health spending gap between young and old. Spending for those age 60 to 64 is four to five times greater than those 18 to 24. So, the young would overpay for insurance that -- under the House bill -- people must buy: Twenty- and thirtysomethings would subsidize premiums for fifty-and sixtysomethings. (Those 65 and over receive Medicare.)
What happened to people saving for their own retirement / declining health in their golden years while they're still young? What sort of incentive will exist for people to actually take care of themselves?

The Obama Administration Creates Jobs (for Lobbyists)
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:21 AM
Apparently the Obama administration's domestic agenda has stimulated jobs in one sector of the economy: lobbying Congress.

USA Today reports that more than 1,000 different lobbying organizations have hired more lobbyists since January:

Overall, health care lobbying has increased, exceeding $422 million during the first ninth (sic) months of the year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in politics. That's more than any other industry and a nearly 10% jump over the same period in 2008. The center's Dave Levinthal said the frenzy of new lobbying activity makes financial sense.

"If lobbying didn't work, people wouldn't do it," he said.

A Chance to Remember Our Troops & Vets This Holiday Season
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:16 AM
The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. have joined forces again this year for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.  This programs gives us all a great opportunity to extend holiday greetings to our service members, veterans and their families.

As we enter the holiday season, please take a moment to remember over 1.4 million men and women on active duty today, and the more than 24 million who have served our country in the past.  Send a holiday card to thank them for their service!

The Red Cross has requested that we keep in mind a few guidelines when sending our greetings:

Do...
    * Sign all cards
    * Entitle cards “Dear Service Member, Family or Veteran”
    * Limit cards to 15 per person or 50 for school class or business group
    * Bundle groups of cards in single, large envelopes

Don’t...
    * Send letters
    * Include personal information such as home or email addresses
    * Use glitter – excessive amounts can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients
    * Include inserts of any kind as they must be removed in the screening process

Cards must be received no later than December 7th.  Cards received after this date will be returned to senders, so get your cards in the mail this week!

Black Rev: Global Warming Trumps Civil Rights; We're Dealing With Our Oxygen & Existence
Posted by: Greg Hengler at 11:14 AM
Here we have another so-called Reverend (i.e., man of God) who sold out to prophet Al Gore and his church of profitable religious science predictions. Rev. Lennox Yearwood, President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus spoke to the National Press Club on Monday morning. He charismatically paints a doomsday scenario when our kids will ask: "Did you care about the fact that we can't breathe?"

If being a man of God is what Rev. Yearwood feels called to do; if bringing lost souls to Christ is what has led him to wear this uniform of God, then I ask and pray that Rev. Yearwood find his way back to the true calling of Christ.
