Fox is reporting that White House Communications Director/Mao fan Anita Dunn will be stepping down at the end of November.  Hopefully she'll call into Beck's red phone before she leaves so we can all bid her good riddance farewell.

70% Of Americans Don't Think Obama Has "Clear Plan" In Afghanistan
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 12:36 PM
Investors Business Daily attributes that percentage to the fact that Americans are still generally unsure about what to do in Afghanistan in the first place. If they aren't sure, how would they really have an idea about what Obama should be doing?

I still think it's Obama's responsibility, as the head of the U.S. military, to provide some stronger guidance.

Reid Plans Senate Health Care Debate Next Week
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 12:31 PM
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid seems pretty optimistic about the future of the Dems' health care reform proposal in the Senate.  Roll Call is reporting that Reid expects to bring the health care legislation to the Senate floor next week and believes the Senate will pass a bill by Christmas.

The Congressional Budget Office continues crunching numbers on the Senate bill, but Reid says he wouldn't rule out trying to begin the debate on the bill before the CBO analysis is complete.  Reid also faces an uphill battle in bringing his party together behind the ban on funding for abortions and the public option.  And in response to Sen. Joe Lieberman's warning that he would join the GOP in opposing the measure, Reid said he spoke to Lieberman and is "confident we'll work something out."

"If Health Care Becomes About Abortion or Any Other Issue But Freedom, We Lose"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 12:15 PM

The brewing abortion debate and Dems' latest "strategy" for passing their health care overhaul is a giant red herring designed to distract attention away from the overall problem with Obamacare: its infringement on freedom.  RedState's Erick Erickson has a analysis out today that rightfully cautions the GOP not to take its eye off the prize and to remember what the party should stand for in this ongoing debate.

Read and take to heart, conservatives:

Let me be clear to the conservative movement and the organizations participating in the health care debate: the fight over health care is about freedom, not your ridiculous little scorecards. ...

...[F]or each issue the GOP raises to be addressed in the [health care] bill, the Democrats and a token Republican will play accommodationist as the media fawns over the bipartisan nature of each compromise.

The danger is that the GOP will start with the presupposition that the health care bill will pass and work to “improve” it. The GOP must get out of that mindset. Republicans working toward destroying legislation they believe will inevitably pass will not destroy the legislation.

At the end of the day, the GOP must flat out oppose the government take over of 1/6th of the American economy. Instead of clamoring for issues to be addressed, the GOP must contrast freedom with the tyranny of the legislation. ...

Schools Teaching Kids How to Be "Good Citizens"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:48 AM
Listening to talk radio this morning, one caller phoned-in with more complaints about schools teaching children messages that conflict with their own family values and pride in country.  This particular caller specifically mentioned a worksheet her child had brought home from school about being a "good citizen."  Needless to say I was pretty shocked by some of the items she read off the sheet and did a quick Internet search to see what other examples I could come up with.

Lo and behold, I found this one right off the bat.  Here are just a few items that were especially concerning:
What is a right?  A right is something you are allowed to have. The right to vote means, when a citizen turns 18, he/she is allowed to vote for who they want to be president or even vote on how money in his/her town should be spent. Citizens also have the right to a free public education. Some countries don’t have those rights. There are many rights citizens of the United States have.
This definition of "rights" not only runs contrary to what I believe, but runs contrary to our country's founding documents which outline the principle that man has "been endowed" with rights by his Creator.  Rights don't come from a government telling us what we are and are not allowed to do.  And with the ACLU practically camping out on playgrounds with their secular friends, how is it that educators can even quote these documents without facing some kind of church/state separation lawsuit?
What is a responsibility? Responsibilities are things people have to do because it is doing their fair share.
There's that familiar phrase Obama likes to use a lot: "doing their fair share."  With this logic, rich people apparently have more responsibility than the rest of us.  But what about personal responsibility?  Nope, no mention of that one.

Other gems include:
Who makes the rules for people to follow?
What are some ways citizens show respect for their country?

Jennifer Rubin On Hasan
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:57 AM
She and Jeffrey Goldberg have been the ones to say it best so far: it doesn't matter whether or not he was a nonideological nut or if he was a terrorist with convictions (though the evidence would strongly point to the latter) -- he shouldn't have been passed over by the FBI.
The obtuseness in a post-9/11 world is mind-boggling.

"You have to break a few eggs to make a permanent welfare state."
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:53 AM

Really brilliant stuff out of the Wall Street Journal this morning.

Mr. Cassidy [writer for the New Yorker] is more honest than the politicians whose dishonesty he supports. "The U.S. government is making a costly and open-ended commitment," he writes. "Let's not pretend that it isn't a big deal, or that it will be self-financing, or that it will work out exactly as planned. It won't. What is really unfolding, I suspect, is the scenario that many conservatives feared. The Obama Administration . . . is creating a new entitlement program, which, once established, will be virtually impossible to rescind."

Why are they doing it? Because, according to Mr. Cassidy, ObamaCare serves the twin goals of "making the United States a more equitable country" and furthering the Democrats' "political calculus." In other words, the purpose is to further redistribute income by putting health care further under government control, and in the process making the middle class more dependent on government. As the party of government, Democrats will benefit over the long run.

So, Would Osama Bin Ladin Qualify As A Terrorist For The FBI?
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 9:52 AM
FBI investigators had assessed the Ft. Hood killer, Maj. Nidal Hasan one year before he went on his rampage, and had concluded he did not pose a threat. Here's why:
Military officials were made aware of communications between Hasan and al-Awlaki [who advocated for Muslims to commit violence against American troops!], but because the messages did not advocate or threaten violence, civilian law enforcement authorities could not take the matter further, the officials said. The terrorism task force concluded Hasan was not involved in terrorist planning.

Officials said the content of those messages was "consistent with the subject matter of his research," part of which involved post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from U.S. combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In what world does a U.S. soldier's communication with an anti-American jihadist qualify as a psychological trauma, rather than an explicit belief in political ideology that threatens our national security? !

This discredits the professions of psychology and psychiatry (which don't need any more detractors). This is a huge embarrassment to both American security forces at home and abroad.

But far, far more importantly, unless a major overhaul of our internal psychological standards is conducted, more men and women in our military forces and elsewhere will suffer the same fate as those heroes who died last week.

I wouldn't be surprised if this news actually deterred people from joining the military. If the institutions designed to make America more secure are concerned with inane psychological standards more than they are with keeping their own people safe, why are they deserving of our young men and women's time, faith, and service?

Scozzafava Resigns From GOP Leadership Post
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:26 PM
She is no longer Minority Leader Pro Tempore in the New York State Assembly. Republican Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb accepted her resignation. Here's what Kolb said:
Today, I had a thorough and frank discussion with Assemblywoman Scozzafava.  As a result, Dede has tendered, and I accepted, her resignation as our Conference’s Leader Pro Tempore.  Over the coming weeks, I will be assessing who will serve as our Conference’s next Leader Pro Tempore to lead our Assembly floor debates.

Newt Has Ideas...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:05 PM
Sometimes I write something, only to later discover the perfect quote that should have been included.  This, of course, is terribly frustrating.

It happened again recently.

The other week, I wrote a column describing why, in my estimation, Newt Gingrich would not suffer for his endorsement of Dede Scozzafava in NY-23.  As I explained,

... Newt Gingrich is brilliant, and liberals know it. We conservatives like that. In an era when conservatives are criticized for lacking ideas, Gingrich is an idea machine.

This weekend, while thumbing through Jon Meacham's "Franklin And Winston," I discovered a quote about Winston Churchill which seems to sum up my hypothesis regarding Newt:

In 1918, Felix Frankfurter was visiting Cliveden, Nancy Astor's country house in England, and listening as she attacked Churchill, who was not there, at length.  At last, A.J. Balfour, a former prime minister, told her: "Nancy, all you can say about Winston may be true, but Winston has ideas, and to a statesman with ideas much shall be forgiven."

While I do not wish to make too much of the Churchill/Gingrich comparison, it is fair to say that Newt has ideas, and, thus, "much shall be forgiven"...
