Paul Krugman Should Visit Detroit
Posted by: Kevin Glass at 4:37 PM
Nobel Prize-winning Paul Krugman walked around New York City the other day and was able, with his own two eyes, to see that the recession is over!

Not really. But he did infer that anecdotes what he saw while walking around NYC means that the recession isn't as bad as the numbers indicate:

I’m not sure what to make of it, but casual observation suggests a stronger recovery than anything I see in published numbers. Lots of small-scale construction — home remodeling, tear-downs replacing old houses. Many new businesses and restaurants filling storefronts that were vacant a couple of months ago.

There’s the observation: walking around, things look better than I expected.

That's good for the people of New York and Princeton! Paul Krugman can see you guys are doing just fine! Of course, Krugman is not a resident of Detroit, Michigan, where the unemployment rate is over 17%, highest of any major metropolitan area in the nation. But the numbers don't matter to Paul Krugman; what matters is what those Nobel-Prize-winning eyes see in person.

The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:21 PM
The NY Times today covers the "cost containment" debate raging among Democrats divided into what Sheryl Gay Stolberg describes as "idealists" vs. "pragmatists."  What they are offering Americans is a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea.

The "pragmatists," apparently, include people like Nancy Pelosi and Rahm Emmanuel.  They don't really care how much the bill costs -- or what it does to our economy long-term -- so long as a bill passes.  That's because they know that an entitlement -- even an economically crippling one -- is almost impossible to repeal once it is passed into law.  And once it's there, the debate comes down to the "evil" Republicans trying to take benefits away vs. the kindly Democrats trying to increase them.  Think of the way Democrats have demagogued Social Security for years, and you'll see what I mean.

No less unattractive are the "idealists" who are trying to find ways to cut costs in this health care freedom grab.  They include Dr. Ezekial Emmanuel (a proponent of health care rationing) and some of their ideas, as described by Stolberg, are as follows:

There are a variety of ideas for attacking cost increases more aggressively, including setting Medicare reimbursement rates for doctors and hospitals more rigorously and discouraging workers and employers from buying expensive health insurance policies that mask the true costs of treatment.

Among other innovations being considered is a cost-cutting method known as bundling, in which health providers receive a lump sum to care for a patient with a particular medical condition, say, diabetes or heart disease.

So, in other words, some of the ideas being considered are: Maybe the government just won't pay doctors and hospitals as much for treating you (wonder what that will do to the ready availability of health care, after the hospitals close and the doctors quit?).  Or maybe you'll be forbidden to buy the health care plan that you believe best meets your family's needs.

Or just maybe the government will "give" a certain amount of money to treat you, and when it runs out . . . well, that's it for you. B-bye.

What Democrats are offering people is a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea.  Either the US slides into permanent European-style social democracy, with high unemployment, slow growth and high taxes because there is an unsustainable level of health care spending -- or you lose your freedom when it comes to health care.  Or,  most likely, both.

UGLY.

Dede's Revenge: Democrats are Nice, Republicans are Mean and Conservatives are the Worst!
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 2:35 PM
Just when you thought Dede Scozzafava couldn't sink any lower in turning her back on the GOP, she laments to the Washington Post about what a victim she was in the November 3 election for NY-23:
At her desk, with a fuzzy elephant face down on a bookshelf behind her, she recalled the exhausting end days of her campaign. Violet semicircles hung below her teary eyes as she recounted how Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and other conservative leaders excoriated her for less-than-orthodox positions on gay rights, abortion and organized labor. Her nose reddened as she recalled her abrupt exit from the special election to replace John M. McHugh, whom President Obama had appointed as secretary of the Army earlier in the year.
Sniffle, sniffle.  It's just so... tragic.  Her reasoning behind throwing her last-minute support behind the Democrat?
The conservative movement's third-party candidate, Doug Hoffman, expected her support but, she said, the newcomer accountant "had no integrity." Plus, the Democrats were so nice! They called. They sympathized. They made her feel good about tossing her support to Bill Owens, who -- with her help -- became the area's first Democratic representative in more than a century.
Dede Scozzafava saying someone else lacks integrity.  Now that's a good one.

70% Of Americans Don't Think Obama Has "Clear Plan" In Afghanistan
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 12:36 PM
Investors Business Daily attributes that percentage to the fact that Americans are still generally unsure about what to do in Afghanistan in the first place. If they aren't sure, how would they really have an idea about what Obama should be doing?

I still think it's Obama's responsibility, as the head of the U.S. military, to provide some stronger guidance.

Reid Plans Senate Health Care Debate Next Week
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 12:31 PM
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid seems pretty optimistic about the future of the Dems' health care reform proposal in the Senate.  Roll Call is reporting that Reid expects to bring the health care legislation to the Senate floor next week and believes the Senate will pass a bill by Christmas.

The Congressional Budget Office continues crunching numbers on the Senate bill, but Reid says he wouldn't rule out trying to begin the debate on the bill before the CBO analysis is complete.  Reid also faces an uphill battle in bringing his party together behind the ban on funding for abortions and the public option.  And in response to Sen. Joe Lieberman's warning that he would join the GOP in opposing the measure, Reid said he spoke to Lieberman and is "confident we'll work something out."

"If Health Care Becomes About Abortion or Any Other Issue But Freedom, We Lose"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 12:15 PM

The brewing abortion debate and Dems' latest "strategy" for passing their health care overhaul is a giant red herring designed to distract attention away from the overall problem with Obamacare: its infringement on freedom.  RedState's Erick Erickson has a analysis out today that rightfully cautions the GOP not to take its eye off the prize and to remember what the party should stand for in this ongoing debate.

Read and take to heart, conservatives:

Let me be clear to the conservative movement and the organizations participating in the health care debate: the fight over health care is about freedom, not your ridiculous little scorecards. ...

...[F]or each issue the GOP raises to be addressed in the [health care] bill, the Democrats and a token Republican will play accommodationist as the media fawns over the bipartisan nature of each compromise.

The danger is that the GOP will start with the presupposition that the health care bill will pass and work to “improve” it. The GOP must get out of that mindset. Republicans working toward destroying legislation they believe will inevitably pass will not destroy the legislation.

At the end of the day, the GOP must flat out oppose the government take over of 1/6th of the American economy. Instead of clamoring for issues to be addressed, the GOP must contrast freedom with the tyranny of the legislation. ...

Schools Teaching Kids How to Be "Good Citizens"
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 11:48 AM
Listening to talk radio this morning, one caller phoned-in with more complaints about schools teaching children messages that conflict with their own family values and pride in country.  This particular caller specifically mentioned a worksheet her child had brought home from school about being a "good citizen."  Needless to say I was pretty shocked by some of the items she read off the sheet and did a quick Internet search to see what other examples I could come up with.

Lo and behold, I found this one right off the bat.  Here are just a few items that were especially concerning:
What is a right?  A right is something you are allowed to have. The right to vote means, when a citizen turns 18, he/she is allowed to vote for who they want to be president or even vote on how money in his/her town should be spent. Citizens also have the right to a free public education. Some countries don’t have those rights. There are many rights citizens of the United States have.
This definition of "rights" not only runs contrary to what I believe, but runs contrary to our country's founding documents which outline the principle that man has "been endowed" with rights by his Creator.  Rights don't come from a government telling us what we are and are not allowed to do.  And with the ACLU practically camping out on playgrounds with their secular friends, how is it that educators can even quote these documents without facing some kind of church/state separation lawsuit?
What is a responsibility? Responsibilities are things people have to do because it is doing their fair share.
There's that familiar phrase Obama likes to use a lot: "doing their fair share."  With this logic, rich people apparently have more responsibility than the rest of us.  But what about personal responsibility?  Nope, no mention of that one.

Other gems include:
Who makes the rules for people to follow?
What are some ways citizens show respect for their country?

Jennifer Rubin On Hasan
Posted by: Jillian Bandes at 10:57 AM
She and Jeffrey Goldberg have been the ones to say it best so far: it doesn't matter whether or not he was a nonideological nut or if he was a terrorist with convictions (though the evidence would strongly point to the latter) -- he shouldn't have been passed over by the FBI.
The obtuseness in a post-9/11 world is mind-boggling.
